This is your traditional, run of the mill conference hotel. It's a bit dated with the lagoon in the atrium and all, but they've tried their best to work with it in a fairly recent remodel.

I had a room on the third floor facing the atrium.  I could hear atrium noise any time I was in my room.  Things quieted down around 11.00 or so, but any other time, you could here the muffled sounds from the lobby a few floors below.

The bed was comfortable enough but my room didn't have the advertised flat panel TV.  Instead, I had some Kate Jackson 1980s television with a broken remote.

The hotel is conveniently located to the Metro Center and Verizon and about a ten minute walk from the mall.  Not a bad location.

Stayed one night for a conference/summit for work - I needed to be there by 6:45 am one morning and 7:45 am the next morning. Given that it was taking 2.5 hours to get into DC in the morning, I opted to stay over one night so as to be on time.

My room was on the 11th floor, and facing the outside world - the streets of DC. Did not end up being a problem noise-wise.

Room was comfortable - bed was firm as were the pillows. Large flat panel HD TV, desk, a couple of chairs...

Cons:
-  AC would not work properly. The room was a bit on the warm side when I arrived, and a bit stuffy. The AC would not stay on long enough to make a difference. It kept cycling on and off. I should have notified the front desk, but it was late and I did not until check out.
- The AC vent where the air comes out into the room was kind of gross (see the attached pix). There was something grungy all over the vent.
- They have large flat panel HD TVs in the room - but no HD channels. So things look a bit like ass when watching TV.
- I could not get a reliable wireless internet connection with my Sprint DataCard - you would think on the 11th floor with an outside room I could get a signal - it was almost as if the hotel was somehow interfering with my signal. As a result, in order to get my work done, I had to buy a day's worth of their internet access service.

Overall, hotel needs some work. Given the prices they charge - they should have plenty of funds to conduct the work needed to improve this hotel and hotel experience.

It's the simple things in life that make me happy.

1.  Aqua Fresh Toothpaste is provided in the room.  Saves me the call i almost always have to make to the front desk.

2. The express check in.  They sent me an email this morning, i checked in online at home, i go up to the kiosk in the hotel when i finally arrive to DC ( blame US Airways for nightmare flight)  and it spits out a key card to my room.  I heart that, since I don't really care for the check in or check out process of anything.

All the small talk about my flight makes me grumpy during check in process.   The check in kiosk keeps me from having to restrain myself from reaching over the counter after a crappy travel day.

I am here on business, so it works....however I will say that it's location to area attractions is convenient and the metro is close by for the tourist visit.

Its a nice place, close access to a pub across the street ( which is a requirement for me) and well kept rooms with a comfy bed. NO scary top blanket ( another new requirement for me).

The word "Grand" might be pushing it. It's a major chain hotel so it's hard for me to score beyond a 3 star ( meets expectations), but i see no reason why you peeps shouldn't stay here.....it does it's job.

Great rooms, great service, gorgeous water feature. I think I left my dignity there but a decent time. I'd go back and recommend it... especially at a wedding party price.

I would recommend the Grand Hyatt for a night or two in D.C.... I mean we really didn't spend that much time in the hotel room! We were sight seeing, boating, eating, walking, and doing more sight seeing ... so everything met our expectations at the hotel.

Were we blown away? No. Would we stay here again? Absolutely.

It's a great location - the breakfast buffet was delicious, and the service was always pretty pleasant! Don't expect a "Grand" experience, and you'll be perfectly satisfied.

This hotel is pretty dated for a Grand Hyatt.  The rooms are only slightly better than a Holiday Inn.  Half of the rooms have a view of the streets and the other half of the rooms have a view of an interior courtyard.  The rooms facing the middle don't have a lot of privacy since there is always another room directly across from you.  Plus, it's kind of cheesy that they even have the interior courtyard.  I know, in order to have a hotel room, you need to have a room with a window.  But a window looking out on something indoors is almost like not having one at all.

I don't like the fact that they charge $10 per day for the internet.  There's no free wifi anywhere in the lobby either.  What really bugs me about this hotel is how damp everything feels.  Sure, DC is humid, but you would think a Grand Hyatt can figure out how to make the sheets on your bed feel dry.  Sleeping on a damp bed for three days was quite unpleasant.

On the plus side, it has a central location and is very close to the metro.

I was kind of conflicted about giving this a so-so review since I'm unsure who to blame for the experience.. but..

My friend booked 2 double rooms for the 5 of us. We expected to get 2 rooms with 2 beds and a cot in one of the rooms. Another friend came down and booked separately. He called and asked what type of room we requested so we could be near him. We said (again) 2 beds.  We walk in and one room was a suite (with only a pull out couch) and another was a room with ONE bed. For 5 of us this was unacceptable. They told the person who booked it that this was all that was left at 4pm. The compromise was 2 cots in the suite and the pull out couch for the 3 guys and the 2 girls shared the bed in the other room.  Honestly..if I had booked it I would have told them this was not what I paid for and threatened to leave but we were tired after a 7 hour trip and had a game to go to that night.

I'm unsure if our rooms got messed up because of that friend or whatever but either way, I wasn't happy. A plus was that we were allowed to check out at 2pm.

This hotel has some great rates in the off-season.  My family and I stayed here 2 weeks before Christmas for only $99 a night!

And since I'm a AAA member, we received complimentary tickets to their breakfast buffet for the entire duration of the stay.  We're talking a pretty good spread: lox and bagels, fresh fruit and juices, crisp bacon, eggs, etc.

Definitely recommended and right in the heart of the city!

My husband (who is in Hyatt's rewards program and often gets free nights) and I stayed here for my birthday...

The actual hotel building and lobby/atrium is very dated and tacky, aside from that, the guest rooms are updated, simple, and very typical of other Hyatt's we have stayed in. No flat screen TV in our room, but it did have an iHome iPod docking station.

The valet service was incredibly slow, it took the one man who was working (at 3pm, peak check-in time) at least 20 minutes to take our car (as he managed to valet the cars of a few people who'd come in after we did). Even at check out getting our car took awhile, though more people were attending to the cars. They even had "lost" one man's car--though eventually it turned up.

As typical with hotel convenience/souvenir shops the hotel's store was quite expensive. For soda's and water, shop off site.

The hotel is in a great location, easy walking distance to a variety of restaurants and bars, as well as shopping. The International Spy Museum is also a short walk, and the National Mall is also walk-able from here. Do use common sense when walking around, especially at night.

Overall if I was looking to stay in this part of DC again, I might use this hotel. It was OK but not "Grand."

Who doesn't like staying in a nice hotel? It could be around the corner from my house and I'd still feel like I was on vacation if it had great accomodations.
The thing that made me book this hotel was the easy metro access. You can access the metro by walking through the lobby, down some stairs, across a lobby, down more stairs, through a hallway and down more stairs..... Point is - it's great if it's raining, but it's that  much more accessible  than if you booked a hotel with metro access a block away.
I had intended to use the valet parking but I turned down the wrong street and ended up at the parking garage - whoops. No big deal though, theres elevator access from the garage to the lobby - only thing is...the garage STINKS. I don't know who designed it but its awful. There are huge posts everywhere, it's very difficult to park, so if you have a large car or you're not super comfortable in tight spaces, pay the extra $6 and go for valet.
The one thing that matters the most to me though when looking for a hotel is cleanliness. I know, I know, no one goes out saying "give me the dirtiest room you have!" But, I'd surely pay extra money for a hotel that was nice and clean. From what I saw, this hotel was very clean, from the elevators to the hallways to our room and bathroom. No complaints there.
The room decor was decent - nothing lavish. The TV was kinda crappy and small  (my boyfriend's observation - I didn't really notice) and there was no fridge.
The atrium is impressive, I prefer more chic decor, but it was fun - we were on the 12th floor and had quite a view from the balcony. It's also right by Chinatown and some good restaurants and within walking distance of some area attractions.
I wasn't completely blown away by the hotel, but I'd stay here again (to get more points on my hyatt passport thing) Otherwise, I'd probably book a hotel in Dupont Circle or Adams Morgan or something with more "soul".

We stayed here overnight for our Corporate Year End Winter Secular Holiday Party thing, which was also held at the hotel.

First, the hotel review:  Amazing lobby.  The rooms are standard-upscale; nothing special but comfortable and well furnished.  The beds are firm.  We had a 'city view' room, which translates to 'side of building across the street view'.  Don't expect sweeping vistas of the Mall or anything.  Service was unremarkable; neither good or bad.

Second, the event review:  We did a cocktail hour followed by a served dinner.  Their hors d'oeuvers were fine, the bar staff was above par, and the dinners were *excellent*.  The filet mignon was five-star-restaurant quality (no, really!) and they got the food out promptly so it was still hot.

Third, the Hotel Breakfast Buffet review.  Bleah.  We ate there because it was frigging cold and windy outside.  We would have done better driving out of the city and finding a Bob Evans or something.  The food was, frankly, Golden Corral Feedin' Trough level, only it cost $20 a head.

Given our non-breakfast experience, this is a good place to hold corporate events, and the block room rate was $109/night which is a steal downtown.

Fair warning though - parking *sucks* in this area.  There's a giant outdoor lot across the street, but when it's twenty degrees, windy, and rainy/sleety, that's no fun at all.  The attached garage fills up fast.  Valet is somewhere in the $40 range.

I stayed here for a conference. The hotel itself is really nice and very spacious - as you can see in the pictures, there's a small pond in the lobby. Take the escalators downstairs and there are several large meeting spaces, where I spent a lot of time. Fairly average conference rooms, nothing special besides their size.

There's a cafe, deli, and gift shop in the lobby, and access to the metro straight from the lobby (this is great in bad weather/after dark - you don't even have to go outside!). The room I stayed in (2 double beds) felt a bit small and cramped, but the beds were comfy and the bathroom was a little more spacious. Also, they make you pay for internet access but you can check in for flights and print out boarding passes for free in the lobby.

Overall, nice place to stay, but only if you get a good deal or your company is footing the bill!

Good Hotel in a Great Location......

I have stayed at many Hyatt properties over the years and overall I have been pretty satisfied with my stays for business and personal. This location is in the middle of DC and accessible to many landmarks, restaurants and venues. Another bonus is the train from here to the airport for $2.00 you cannot beat it! I was impressed with how clean everything was especially with all the visitors.

The check in process started off great. The service was enthusiastic and pleasant. I was asked if being on the 11th floor was fine but I have preferences for lower floors. It was changed no questions asked. Score one for great customer service.

My room was being serviced when I was checking in. They were doing a bit of touching up. Outstanding to see a property being properly maintained. The room was clean and the beds were great. I had a great night of sleep when I made the time!

My only grip is that the meetings rooms in the catacombs of this place received no phone service of any kind. Also strange I was literally shocked when I touched the metal of the escalators. No fooling!

The check out process was fast and you can even check in your bags and print your boarding pass. I would definitely stay here next time while on business or personal in DC!

it's just a 3 star hotel.

They don't go above and beyond with service.  They make you pay for gym and internet access ($10), but the swimming pool is free (and connected to the gym anyway, so you technically can sneak in a swim + work out if you want).

They also had so-so rooms--the best part being the linens (bed and towels were soft/comfortable), otherwise my room smelled of cigarettes when I first entered and thankfully it dissipated after the first night.

Their gift shop is open from 7am - 11pm, they have an ATM in the lobby, and a kiosk to check-in to your flights.  I did like it because it was bustling with people at all hours of the day.  They have something like 800+ suites, so you are pretty much a room number (which, depending on what kind of service you expect, can be a good or bad thing).

The food here is just "meh".  I did the continental breakfast buffet for $19.99 and the quality was not good, the selection was not good, and the overall experience was just so-so.  I found myself trying to finish things, just because I had payed $20 for it.  Save your money!

Taxi from IAD is around $55 - 60, Taxi from DCA is probably more like $20.

If you are staying in DC and need moderately ($189/night in Oct. through priceline) priced lodging in a prime location (1 block from my office and 1 block from my convention, sits right on top of the City Center metro stop), then book!!  If you are looking for a good hotel experience, this will just meet some basic standards, but won't go over the top.

My boyfriend and I recently stayed for 5 nights for a convention.  The room was nice and the housekeepers were very good.  We ate at the Grand Slam twice and got drinks there a couple of times.  The service was aweful, drinks were ok, and food was tolerable.  We also ate at the Cure restaurant.  We were expecting the salty "cured" food, but WOW it was almost too much.  The absolute worst thing was that the hyatt stole his credit card information!  He used this card only once on the entire trip and got a call from the credit card company saying they put a freeze on the accout because of all the fishy charges!  We contacted the hyatt and they said that this concerned them, but made no attempt to do anything else.  Be careful if you decide to stay here!

Nice place.  Blocks from the White House and has a decent but small gym.  Decent sports bar in the lower levels and an uptight bistro style place to drink on the ground level.  Good bars and yes, that matters!

I stayed at the Grand Hyatt last week for three nights after booking on Priceline for $80/night. It is in a very convenient location...it is located mere blocks from both the Metro Center and Gallery Place/Chinatown metro stops and for those feeling ambitious, it is located about a fifteen-twenty minute walk from most of the DC museums. It's located not too far from New York Avenue, so there is also quick access to the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, and Route 50.

The lobby when you walk in is incredibly large and very well done. Check-in was quick and there are plenty of elevators to take you up to your room. The rooms are fine...I think I lucked out with a corner room because it seemed slightly more spacious. The bathroom is a little tight which is the only thing about the room I didn't like. Checkout was very easy as I did the Express checkout on the TV in my room. I valet parked my rental car at the hotel and it cost me anywhere from $26-30 per day. Right before I checked out, I called down to have the car pulled around and when I stepped outside, it was waiting for me. All the staff I encountered at the hotel (valets, doorman, front desk staff, etc) were helpful and pleasant.

The huge downside of the hotel to me was that the bars and lounges in the hotel close early. The lounge in the lobby closes at 11 pm and the sports bar closes at midnight. So if you are looking for food and/or drinks late at night, you have to leave the hotel which isn't super ideal if you are a 20-something year old woman traveling by herself. The staff at the sports bar was very nice and I did meet some interesting people down there while watching the Olympics. I visited the lounge before meeting friends for dinner and the bartender was very nice and even gave me a free glass of wine. Drink prices were very typical for DC ($5-6 for a beer). The only thing I didn't like about the lounge was there were no TVs! I mean there were TVs but they were playing a slideshow of scenic pictures...when you are by yourself, you need something like a TV to keep you entertained at a bar or lounge.

Overall, I would stay at this hotel again on a future trip.

Review of hotel room and hotel in general.

This Hyatt is pretty nice, when you walk in, you are in this spacious atrium-like building. Your room either faces away to the outside or inward to the center of the hotel. The check in and out process were pretty painless, the staff were pleasant.

The location of the hotel is also pretty good I guess. I mainly had to work at the convention for a few days so it was within walking distance of the convention center as well as the Chinatown and metro stop. Didn't have time to go siteseeing or to the museums so unsure how far that was from the hotel.

The room was pretty big. For a non-smoking floor though, my room smelled of smoke which we eventually got used to cause if a non-smoking room smells like smoke, you probably can't get any other room that wouldn't. The bed was comfy, wireless internet worked but wasn't the fastest of things.

Since I was sharing a room and would sometimes work at the desk or on the bed, I had to keep pulling and pushing the tv to where I was located vs. it being on a swivel thing.

Gross: I moved the ipod radio holder on the night stand one night to make room for the phone to be closer to me and there was like a 3 inch mold spot underneath. My roomy almost puked and I thought it was a Spore creature with its size and green and white mold bits. Ewww.

The bathroom was a bit odd with it's industrial strength toilet flush handle and industrial piping sticking out plainly for all to see.

And if you need to get up at a certain time, don't depend on the wake up calls. Mine was 10 mins late in calling me. Good thing it was my backup to my iphone.

All in all, it was a pretty pleasant experience. Would I pay the group rate of $239 to stay three on my own, probably not. Would I stay there again for work, yes.

Don't assume you will get yummy meals at the hotel though, go outside for that. But if in the AM you need something quick, the breakfast sandwiches at the Cafe next to Starbuck's is pretty good and very big for the $6 you pay for the sandwich. The breakfast buffet is definitely worth skipping, too. The eggs were runny, the pastries were dry, and you pay a lot for what you get which isn't a lot. Breakfast sandwich!

Everyone can have good days and then some bad days.  It's like with hotels.  You stay at a cheap hotel and have the best night of your life.  Or, you pay so much to stay at a 5-star one and then the hot water won't work on you but you have to shower because you've got a business meeting in a few minutes.  It's case to case.

We got a good rate (I forgot where!) for a decent room with a decent view here at Grand Hyatt.  We only stayed two nights and they were both uneventful.  Nothing to complain about.

I thought the lobby was charming with the waters and all.  And it just seemed so bright and alive that you won't be afraid to just hang out.

What I do remember (and this will be one reason we would consider staying here again if ever we're in DC), is that the hotel has underground access to the Metro.  So, it helps if you're not familiar with the area.

I know I have seen some pretty negative reviews of this hotel and I was hesitant to stay here but for the price that we booked it, I couldn't turn it down. Turns out, the hotel was so much better than the bad reviews. Upon check-in, our front desk staff, Emanuel was fast, friendly and very helpful. The hotel is clean and our room was made up nicely. We ended up booking a room on the Concierge level and I must say, if you stay here when the prices are good, stay on the Concierge level. We arrived just in time for the hors d'oeuvre hour which included yummy cookies, starbucks coffee, tea, hot cocoa, and a variety of cheese, crackers, & prosciutto. The concierge level also allows you free use of the gym/pool not located in the hotel but in the building connected to it. There is also a continental breakfast included with the cereal, lox & cheese, & pastry thoroughfare. The room amenities were standard but some of the stuff that stood out included an actual travel size toothpaste, portico spa products (the soap smelled divine), Q-tips & an iPod docking station.

Location: Great! Easy walk to the green/yellow & blue line. Within a few blocks to the White House. A couple blocks away from the MLK Public Library, National Gallery Museum, American Art Museum, & Verizon Center.

Negatives: The Grand Club wasn't open all the time. Didn't make sense since I read that it was available all day. Internet is not free, $15 for 24 hours. We were on the top floor and couldn't figure out the buzzing noise that sounded like a standing truck...might have been the A/C units on the roof? Weird beer charge on our receipt at check-out. It was immediately remedied but how did that happen?

We would definitely stay again if the price was right.

We stayed here for the holidays, and fell in love with it, especially at a AAA rate of $116 per night, full breakfast included. I can't understand the travelers who said it was old and in need of modernisation. It was a typical Hyatt property, not brand new, but certainly contemporary enough. Our room decor included rich chocolate woods with sand-colored granite tops. Flat screen TVs would have been nice, but at this price, I could pass on them. The bathroom was roomy and almost as stylish as a Park Hyatt. Most importantly, the shower had good water pressure and good temperature regulation.

The service was fantastic. The front desk was especially accomodating, and readily removed a $10 charge I was not aware of for accepting a package I had sent to the hotel. Our room was made up every day, regardless of what time our "Do Not Disturb" sign was left out. The sports bar downstairs was fun as well with prompt, friendly service.

Finally, if you have never ridden the Metro before, it is a must to get around town here. We never had to deal with the hassel of parking or renting a car because we rode the Metro everywhere (on a unlimited weekly $32.50 pass). The Metro center, a transfer station for the Red, Blue, and Orange lines, was accessible through the basement.

This has become our new favorite hotel in D.C., at least at this rate. It was comfortable, conveniently located, and had friendly, attentive service. We will definitely be back.

My friend and I decided to get a room for new year's eve it was really reasonable at $110 on NYE! We got there by train and that punishing weather on NYE almost turned us into popsicles walking to the hotel! We got there around 6:30 PM and the lobby was crowded with people going to the DC 101 event it was a black tie event apparently everyone was nicely dressed. We got a twin bed room it was very spacious and has a view of the foyer and everyone across on the other side getting dressed, sitting on beds, drinking away etc etc. We popped a bottle of champagne and ordered room service before going out to Chinatown! The burger was delicious cooked to a nice medium and good fries! It came with little bottles of condiments which are perfect! It was about $15 though! I will definitely stay there again!

I went here twice.  I went to a panel discussion in one of their meeting rooms, which was super amazing, but that was really due to the panel and not the room.  The walk into the meeting room was really nice though.  I'm a sucker for hotels with open atriums or things in the middle, in general.  They have a pond with a turquoise tiled floor, and there is an island upon which is a piano.  Unfortunately, there was no water in the "moat" and no piano player, but it was still cool and reminded me of like, 1960s Miami.  Also, the meeting room was a couple of floors underground, so we took escalators by these incredible sparkly chandeliers that had me all sparkly-eyed.  So beautiful.

I also went to a party in the Presidential Suite.  This suite was so fancy, it had a pool table.  The hostess, who is (coincidence?  No.) the President of the American Libraries Association (and also my professor), said we had to play pool to make it worth taking up all that space, but the suite was so huge, I didn't really think it made a difference.  The bar was fabulous, as were the bartenders.  They always pre-poured just a few glasses of champagne, so every time I needed one, I just switched out, but it hadn't been sitting there more than a couple minutes.  Very convenient.  The suite was clean and beautiful and classy.  It was also located within a deep labyrinth in the hotel that would have been very secure had there not been signs indicating the way to the party.  Again, I admired the chandeliers on my way out.  Favorite part.

This place was great. Subway access was inside the building, so it's easy to get anywhere in the DC area. it's in kind of a boring location, but a short walk can get you to some of the best attractions in DC. Parking on the street is easy so don't waste your time with their $20 a night parking garage. clean and spacious. However, in the standard rooms the showers are weird, they are only sloped there is no tub; but not sloped enough--- water gets all over the floor. badass atrium, very friendly asian cleaning ladies.

This hotel was cool.  The location was perfect.  Just walking distance to the metro station, white house, china town, and the convention center.  The staff was friendly.  Our flight came in early in the morning so we were planning on leaving our luggage in their hotel closet until the room was ready but when we got there around 8am they had a room ready for us so we got to rest before starting to site see.  The only problem is the way the hotel is designed.  the center is open and the elevators are just on one side so you are screwed if your room is on the opposite side of the elevators. a long walk to the room sucks after long walks of site seeing.

I knew something was wrong about this place when I first walked into the lobby to check-in and someone in line told me to switch to Starwood. Not a good sign and she was so right. This is one of those overpriced hotels that charge you if you sneeze in the lobby. Well, not that bad but they do charge you for every little thing it seems. They still charge for internet (at least it's only ten bucks, some charge anywhere from 12 to 24) and they still charge to use the gym. Who does that anymore? I mean, I was at a Hilton in Toronto once and not just did they provide access to their small fitness room but they also provided free access to a real gym across the street. Why can't the Hyatt figure that out? And what $300/night hotel doesn't provide bathrobes? Or mouthwash? This one! And of course, they screwed up my reservation. Actually, I was here for a conference and they screwed up a LOT of reservations. Room itself is cozy although I had a corner room so it involved a little cornering to go from one side of the room to the other. No real place to work so don't expect to do any. Place is attractive in a preppy or yuppie way. Bathrooms are pretty nice and I like the massage soap (yes, massage soap!) which has large, raised bubbles on one side. Must make up for the fact there's no shower massage. Coffee maker is one of the individual one cup coffee makers which made a mess of that area when I first used. Ended up pouring coffee all over the place. No WiFi in the lobby so walk on over to the Library a couple of blocks away. Restaurant include a large coffee shop/restaurant, a sports bar, a take out deli (with decent prices, amazingly enough) and of course, the ubitiqous Starbucks! Yeeecchh! Finally, they couldn't even do express checkout or get my boarding pass correct and the computer kept f'n up! And I thought I got hung over in DC! I'm glad I was comped this place because for $300 a night I wouldn't stay here. Actually, I would stay here if I had to stick out my MasterCard for anything.

UPDATE (7/3): I just found out a few days ago when checking my bank statement that I was assessed a charge for over 52 bucks even though my folio said 0.00. Why? Business Center charges. Turns out the Business Center is run by a third-party and they charged me handling on packages sent to my conference and never bothered to tell me about the charge nor delver to me a receipt for my records! Now, I've received packages at Marriott's, Hilton's, etc. and never been charged. So is the Business Center affiliated with American Airlines and all their ridiculous charges? I wonder about that.

I was in DC for business for a few days and had the opportunity to test a few different hotels.

This Hyatt is pretty nice. I payed the government rate, so it was probably worth it. It's true that rooms facing the atrium are pretty dark. The rooms themselves are really nice and have plenty of space. The beds are pretty nice and made for some good sleep (even though I didn't get as much as I wanted).

The desk chair of the Grand is much better than that of the normal Hyatts. I could actually get some work done in that Hotel. Everything is very generic though and even though the staff tries to be friendly and helpful, you know you can't be more than a number.

We have just returned from a 9 day stay at the Grand Hyatt Washington.  The property has a very nice location, walking distance to the Metro, and the atrium is quite stunning.

Upside:  1)  Centrally located to everything in DC, either by foot, Metro, or rental car.
2)  Front Desk Staff was always helpful, and efficient, so there were rarely ever lines even during major check in times
3)  Rooms were not large but spacious enough so that no one was bumping into each other.

Downside:  1)  Concierge, don't even think about calling and getting a timely return call.  After the 3rd time of getting voicemail I simply gave up this service(?).  In addition, I received recommendations which if I did not call in advance would have wasted alot of time, because they were so erroneous.  Recommend that you do your own homework.
2)  Housekeeping, while they did keep the rooms clean, I had to call every day for extra towels, even though day 1 I let the housekeeper know that I needed extra towels through the duration of our stay.
3)  Wireless, forget it, it did not work in our room, and the technical support left me on hold for 10 minutes.
4)  Business Center, with no wireless you would think I could go to the business center and use their computers.  At $36/hour plus $1.50 to print a single page, it was easier and CHEAPER to go to Kinko's up the street.
5)  Security, no safe in the room, so I had to constantly check my laptop in and out of the safe deposit box.
6)  Fitness Center, while there is not one on the property, they have an agreement with a club in the same building.  It was small with good equipment, but they charge you an addl $10 per day.
7)  Grand Slam restaurant, their sports bar in the hotel.  Service was poor.
8)  e-Concierge, this is a service to pre-arrange activities prior to arrival, and yes you guessed it, no reponse back.

So back to the title, what is so Grand?  Rates were fair for the area, but unless you have a compelling reason to come here, I cannot recommend this property.

A fine hotel.  Probably 2.5 stars, not 3 in that it's decidedly average in many ways.  Whatever you do, REQUEST A ROOM WITH AN EXTERIOR VIEW.  Rooms overlooking the hotel atrium are dismally dark.  Great location very near the Verizon Center, tons of restaurants and bars.

I was on vacation and had a great experience at Grand Hyatt.  It was near the White House, Chinatown, and the mall so you can walk to all those places within 5 minutes or less.  It was convenient since there are metro entrance near the hotel.  I got the rooms on priceline so it was even cheaper!  I got a 2 queen size bed room for $70!  Can't beat that.  Our room was nice and roomy.  We also tried the breakfast at the lobby and it was gooood.  You see this nice pool and a piano on an island.  very nice and elegant.  I would definitely come back again!

I was here one night and was not impressed. Rooms in this price range should be larger; if you're paying enough to rate the VIP lounge it should have snacks available all the time. The alcohol prices in the VIP lounge are ok-ish, but only in comparison to downstairs. They muffed the switch from one credit card to another, though they did take care of the matter.
