If you're looking for a resort setting, look no further. I can't imagine anyplace getting it done any better than they have here.
The Stevenson Library is a lovely setting for a drink.
"Share The Stars" is their premium, private, beach cabana dinner service and there is no more special night out.

Meh. I was slightly disappointed when I got here. The lobby is TOTALLY beautiful, so I thought the rooms would be just as fine. There was a strange stain on our sofa, and the paint was peeling in the bathroom. The shower head was all crusted over. It was like a Best Western.
Totally overpriced. So, I figure you are paying for the view, not the room.
Yeah, that's what you are paying for.
We had our beach side wedding here, and had relatives that live on the island come over, and they all got kicked out for going to look at the pool. Ooops. A polite asking to leave would have been okay, because my relatives are old ladies, but they were a little TOO gruff. And when I called asking if I could have relatives over for an event later, they said they'd have to pay a day rate to stay here and have watched us like hawks since. Ohwell. Pardon our ignorance; we didnt know it'd be a big deal to have family over for a wedding. They wanted to admire the damn grounds! Geez. It's not like they were drunk or peeling paint off the already peeling walls.
Meh. I should have saved the skymiles to go to the Grand Hyatt in Japan and stayed with cousins instead.

As you can tell from most of the reviews, the pools and scenery here are gorgeous. That said, I wish I read in between the lines of these reviews because most of them point out some major flaws.
This hotel is VERY old and VERY overrated. They will be undergoing MAJOR renovations for the first time ever in 2010. Unfortunately, that didn't help us during our stay. According to the hotel manager, the hotel rooms have NEVER been updated or remodeled.
Honestly, the quality of the rooms is on par with a Best Western. For the money we paid, we felt we got shafted big time. The hallways throughout the hotel were dark and smelly.
The service here was hit or miss as well. Some employees bent over backwards for guests while others didn't want to be bothered with anyone. The food and drinks were good but expensive, which is too be expected for any hotel in Hawaii.
Unless you are coming here with a bunch of kids, look elsewhere because you deserve more for the money you spend at the Grand Hyatt. We didn't have that option because the only other decent resort on Kauai (The Regis) was closed for remodeling.
Having said all that, my wife and I didn't let our disappointed expectations ruin our stay. We had fun but would not recommend this place for the money we paid.
I'm lucky to say that I got to spend 2 nights here while visiting Kauai for the first time!
Checked out of the hotel this morning...
YES:
+ Beautiful hotel! (Although I haven't seen other hotels on the island.. I'm sure this is the most gorgeous hotel on the island by far!)
+ Big bathroom
+ Spacious guestroom
+ Stevenson's Library. One of the best pina colada's I've ever had. (Had pina colada's both nights here!)
+ Lovely pool layout
+ Hammocks by the saltwater pool
+ Free self parking
+ Lots of Kois!
+ The people in the front was able to push our reservations back to a later time at a restaurant outside of the hotel grounds.
NO:
- Had a hard time finding our room. (They need better/more signs) We got lost and went in circles.
- Had dinner at The Tidepools and my main dish tasted like SALT. yuck.
- They shut of the tiki torches early, so when I went strolling during the night, I couldn't really see anything.
- The person who checked us in didn't warn us about needing a over night parking pass. So we had to go out of our way to get a pass once we seen the sign.
If I ever get a chance to visit Kauai again... I would love to come back here and spend more time enjoying the resort... since most of my stay was outside of the grounds.
I heart Kauai & the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa.

Goodness gracious this resort is gorgeous (I mean, gimme a break: http://www.yelp.com/bi...)
I can think of no better way to spend a lazy vacation in Kauai than lounging in a beach-front hammock with a pina colada at the Hyatt. If only I made 4x my salary and could afford to spend more time here. Definitely a first-class spot!
Stevenson's Library (inside) also might be one of the coolest bars on the island, but don't drink too many or you will pay - and I'm talking $$$, not a hangover.

Luxurious! We had a partial Ocean view room with good view of the pool and the water slide. The bathroom was huge and awesome. The view was great and since we were on our honeymoon they gave us a free bottle of champagne. Just as good for families as it is for honeymooners they have something for everyone.
The pools at the Hyatt are amazing. They have a salt water lagoon, a kid-focused pool with a water slide, and a adult pool with waterfall caves and a slight current so that you can float around in an inner tube. The pools more than makes up for the lack of a usable beach which had a very high and powerful surf while we were there (late July).
The breakfast buffet is wickedly awesome but get there early (before 8:30AM) for a decent seat. We also went to the breakfast at the golf club restaurant which was good food and service. We heard the dinner at Yum Cha is not so good.

Stopped at Stevenson's Library for a drink after an eventful trip to Spouting Horn...
Though it's billed as a scotch bar, my dad was disappointed in their selection. The tropical drinks were good (pricey) but the view was priceless. And on top of the gorgeous views, we even got to witness a hula show the hotel was putting on :)

This review is for the Anara Spa.
We also came here as one of our honeymoon days. We did the three hour "Couples' Escape" where we we got all sorts of schweet body products like scrubs and clay body masks and what not to enjoy together in our "deluxe lava rock shower and wild ginger steam grotto". After that we had the "romantic, orchid-strewn bubble bath in our serene soaking tub for two" (yes, stole those from the website). We also got massages in our own private "hale" followed by some kickass foot massages and pedicures.
The service was pretty impeccable. But. It still seemed to me that it wasn't worth THAT much money. I haven't been to a lot of high end spas to compare but I know I've had better body massages down the street from my house here in Texas.
I'm really glad we did it because the EXPERIENCE was wonderful but I can't really see myself justifying that much money for something other than a honeymoon, unless I win the lottery. We made sure to use the rest of the spa services and amenities for the rest of the day to attempt to get our money's worth. I probably washed my hair four times with their exclusive coco mango products in the (very cool i must admit) open air volcanic rock showers. Their lap pool was very nice as well.

A beautiful property. Spacious rooms. Great service. Best spa on Kauai. Nice pool, but not as nice as the Maui Hyatt (only one waterslide). Great selection of restauarants at all price ranges. Nice Regency Club. Pricey - but worth it for some. Beach is unsafe for most swimmers. Salt water Iagoon is nice, but not ocean fed and absent of sea life. Would stay here again.
We visited end of August/early September 09, and had the best time. Beautiful location, great service, and my friends' wedding was gorgeous.
I would recommend this mostly for couples/honeymoon/wedding, as this is not exactly a big night-life spot, but we had a large group of people there, so we were never bored.
The pools are always open, and the salt-water lagoon always seemed to be the perfect temperature.
After a week of being spoiled here, I hated leaving the hotel. And the view from that lobby took our breath away every time we walked in.
One tip: if you are staying with others who are in different rooms, make sure you are very near to each other...this hotel is HUGE and with the large amount attending the wedding, we walked a LOT...good exercise to burn off the mai-tais, though.
I plan on staying here again in the future.
OMG is all I have to say...this was THE most wonderful resort I have ever been to--and that is saying a lot since I worked for many years in the hotel industry. There is absolutely nothing negative to say about this place. First of all, it is HUGE. We stayed in an oceanview room in the furthest wing of the hotel--room was nice and spacious and wonderfully airconditioned. I was traveling with my husband and 2 kids (3yr old and 5 month old). This was such a kid friendly hotel. Even the stellar restaurant Tidepools had a 3 course kids menu for my son! We stayed for 5 nights--October 8-12th. Weather was beautiful. This was our 2nd trip to Kauai and we will definitely come back and stay at this resort! The pool/lagoon was unbelieveable and if you have children or not, they will absolutely love it. It is a huge lazy river with waterfalls and lava rock and 3 jacuzzi's...the saltwater lagoon was so nice since the swimming at the beaches in Kauai is a little scary with the surf and all---my husband and 3 yr old son went kayaking in the lagoon...it was so perfect. We ate at Tidepools 2 nights--one without the kids and one night with the kids...they were both equally fabulous...the koi just swim right around you...it is absolutely beautiful. We also ate at the pool every day for lunch...FANTASTIC food! A little expensive, but everything is in Hawaii. Awesome gift shops to shop at, the best lava flow drinks on the island for sure, but pricey $13.00....although, they have a daily fruiffy drink special for $8.00---well worth it.
The grounds are so lush and beautiful and every single staff member at this place was so happy. No one that worked there ever looked stressed. And everyone always had a smile and said Aloha.
There is no other choice--you have got to stay here. It is worth the $$ to stay. You dont ever even have to leave the hotel if you dont want to. Shipwreck beach is right on the grounds of the resort and we say a huge mantarey out there one day! If u get a chance, take a zodiac boat along the Napali coast too----it was awesome...dont bring your toddlers on that adventure though...a little to dangerous in a zodiac boat!
Have fun and book your stay now!!! You wont regret it.
Oh- and I forgot to mention the buffet breakfast in the morning....unbelieveable. You will definitely gain some weight on this trip---the food is awesome. and the fruit is wonderful! Make sure you get it included in your rate so you can enjoy it every morning--well worth it.
Two words: amazing hotel.
Context of review: The bf and I visited from 5/15/09 to 5/21/09, which is a naturally low-traffic time of year, and due to the confluence of Swine Flu and Crappy Economy, the place was running at less than half capacity. Hence, I have no complaints about smoky rooms or millions of screaming children; quiet, clean tranquility prevailed.
The staff was uniformly gracious, friendly, and helpful. The grounds, buildings, and pool are stunning; photos cannot do them justice. The "gigantor" pool area is open 24 hours. The rooms are newly renovated and very luxurous. There are beautiful tropical birds (3 macaws and a cockatoo) in the open air lobby.
Can't wait to come back.
PS: I think it sucks that one angry chick who wasn't even a guest of the hotel gets to ding the place's score cuz she got (very politely) kicked out of the hot tub. Sheesh.

Relax , you can do here and a bit more. have been there few times and each time a pleasant experience and great service. The place was remodeled after the bad hurricane that ruined a good portion of it in the 90's.
Architecture of this place is fabulous. the angles of windows, outdoor arches and openings work like beautiful frames and the lighting is perfect. The grounds were designed well thought of and it really works well for a resort, a bit on the spendy side but that is to be expected. The decor is on the antique side with a modern flair, nothing ostentatious , just beautiful and comfy. They have a delightful open aviary with different birds of the island. You wonder how come these birds don't leave, then again if i was a bird i would want to live there too.

The Spa here was incredible. My wife and I spent part of our honeymoon here and will never forget the experience!!! The area is beautiful and the attention to detail is breathtaking. The staff was always very welcoming as well.
We stayed in one of the suites and the view, serenity and space come combined in a great package. Granted, its a bit on the higher side for a budget so be prepared for that. If you can comfortably shell aside some of that to take some time off and enjoy yourself, you will be doing yourself just right at this resort :P
One other convenience we found was when you check out, they also offer a Hospitality Room as well as having no problem with you keeping the cabana you paid for (would be lame if they didn't, of course).
A great resort. Lots of things to do just on the resort itself. Dining options on resort are a bit pricey, but quite convenient. Location on south of island makes northern spots a bit of a drive to reach, though.
The staff were always quite helpful and courteous.
The hotel lobby has a breathtaking framed view of the ocean. Breakfast buffet is nice, but get there early before it gets too crowded (before 9am). The $18/day resort charge and $15/day internet access fees are a bit ridiculous, though.
Also, be prepared to do a bit of walking to your room. Only one main elevator on the eastern wing of the hotel.
Would definitely like to stay here again, though.

Holy crap. Where to begin...
The view to the ocean straight through the lobby when you arrive is amazing. The monsterous jungle river pool is awesome. The fake saltwater pool is sweet. Open air hallways = gold. Friendly dudes at the bar in the pool, too. Oh, and gents, hangin out at the spa after a massage is crazy good.
Rooms? Who cares?
Oh, and, the luau was in a giant conference room. WTF. Had to bust outta there.
If you need to get away and relax, Kauai is the place to go. If you go to Kauai, the Grand Hyatt Kauai is the hotel to stay at. It is one of the most beautiful resorts I have been to in the world and hands down one of the best experiences I have ever had.
The grounds of the hotel are beautiful and the layout works wonderfully. The architecture is unique in the island plantation style and the rooms tastefully appointed. The pools are great to sit by and and to take a dive in, also there is a great salt water lagoon to relax in if the ocean seems a bit much for your liking.
The staff were fantastic and always on point. I was quickly checked in and on my way to my room.
For a truly relaxing time, this is the place to go and see!
this place is GORGEOUS. the lobby overlooks the beach! can you find a better hotel perk than that? lots of pools, really good restaurants, very helpful staff and a fantastic location...right on the beach! i had an ocean view room (amazing) and access to the Grand Club (for free, but usually it's big money). they have a nice little gym which provides you with towels, water and headphones. nothing but great things to say about this resort.

This was probably one of the nicest resorts I have ever stayed at. The entire property had an open feel to it from the hotel lobby that looked out to the ocean to the hallways that allowed the ocean breeze to come in. The rooms were very comfortable and offered all of the amenities you need. No need to bring any toiletries including toothpaste. The pool was amazing! They had both chlorine and salt water pools with a lazy river that ends with a cool slide! The beaches were within steps of the property where the locals came to surf. I also played golf next door at Poipu Bay Golf course which is a PGA course! If Kauai is a destination for vacationing, stay here!
My husband and I were, yes, on our honeymoon here in Oct 2005. We were both surprised at how much we fell in love with this amazing resort. It is such a beautiful area and everyone was so nice and helpful from housekeeping to the bell hops to the front desk. The Valet Parking could be slow at times, but we just learned to make sure to call ahead for our car before leaving our room and then there was no problem. The grounds were just amazing and we loved that there were many options of where to relax at the pool (numerous pools or the salt-water pool with sand) as well as many options of places to dine or get drinks on the grounds as well.
We booked a mountain view room and were still very pleased with the room as it had a beautiful view of the mountains and gardens. They sent a complimentary bottle of champagne because we were on our honeymoon, which was nice. We enjoyed that one night sitting out on our balcony.
Breakfast was included in our package. You have to make sure you have the breakfast there everyday or included in your package if you can . We really looked forward to this each day and although we completely overindulged. From 5 different flavors of butter, to portuguese sausage (YUM!!), to little smoothie shooters waiting for you when you returned to your table...each small detail was wonderful. The large open air dining area overlooked the ocean and grounds which was a beautiful way to start each day. Maybe it was because we were in Hawaii and the few extra touches, but we were so glad we did this and three years later we still talk about it.
In the evening, we had drinks at the Seaview Terrace a few times, the huge open air bar (casual) that overlooks the grounds and ocean, where they have Hawaiian musical entertainment. Drinks are $10 each regardless of whether they are on the beach or here. Just pretend they're free...you're on vacation.
We thought the Hyatt would be pretty nice, but are surprised how much we LOVED it there and it became a highlight of our trip to Kauai and Maui. If you're debating whether or not to stay here...do it. It is your best choice on the island!

One star for getting kicked out of the hot tub. No, we weren't guests of the hotel, but of the condos on the property, which we were informed gave us the right to use the amenities. The guy very nicely kicked us out, but we were kicked out nonetheless.

My husband and I wanted to live it up on our honeymoon, and while we could've saved money by staying elsewhere, we decided to go all out and stay at the Grand Hyatt Kauai. This place is, without a doubt, the most amazing hotel I've ever seen. When you step into the lobby, you look directly into an open air courtyard (filled with tropical plants and beautiful macaws) that looks into a covered patio restaurant that looks straight out onto the ocean.
We'd booked a mountain view, but the hotel upgraded us to an ocean view when we checked in. Truthfully, it didn't really matter what view we had, since we spent so little time inside the actual hotel room, but it was nice to be able to see the sunrise from our lanai. Most of the time, when we were on the hotel grounds, we either read by the pool or swam up and down the lazy river. We did use the workout facilities, which were very nice (and a pleasant respite from running in the August humidity). A note for those interested in the lap pool: you do have to pay extra for a lap pool pass.
Our honeymoon package included breakfast every day. We tried the big buffet for a few days but ended up preferring breakfast at the Poipu Bay Golf Club, which had some amazingly tasty options. I highly recommend ordering the "Da Kama'aina" and "Broke da Mouf," both of which involve fried rice and Chinese sausage. Yummmm.
Definitely recommend this place for both the honeymooning and the family-oriented crowd. The water slide, after all, is the great equalizer.
We ended our vacation here and enjoyed the fanciness that the resort provided. The resort is one of the most beautiful resorts that I have been to.
The beach wasn't great, but the pools are great.
The spa was top notch and the rooms were very comfortable.

Best hotel in Kauai! Loveliest hotel grounds... proximity to the beach, golf course, award winning Amara spa, phenomenal Dondero's Italian restaurant and experiential Tidepools restaurants on premise. Need I say more?
We were upgraded to a deluxe room with a KING and QUEEN bed, his and her sinks (bathroom to the left, toilet to the right SWEET!), lovely lanai (balcony) and loads of space. OMG super fabulous! I have never had a room with such luxurious space ever! We requested for a room with a sea view... so had to walk to the end of the large compound all the way from the reception area till the sea front. But the walk was so worth it.
Oh and since we had Diamond status with Hyatt, we were offered free use of their Club which provided breakfast, afternoon snacks, evening cocktails and dinner appetizers and did I mention the full bar? Wonderful.
We had such a lovely stay here, we didn't want to leave...
My husband and I just got back from a 10 day stay at the Grand Hyatt. The moment you walk into the lobby, you are hit with this shock of bright blue ocean view. I mean, you can't stop looking at it, it's like crack.
There are a lot of people staying there at any given time, so it doesn't feel secluded by any means, but the grounds and pools are laid out so beautifully, you hardly mind a bit, and it never feels crowded. You'll soon be hypnotized by the sound of the coo-kooing grey doves and wild roosters. The lazy river with its water falls and little coves is a delight for couples, and the salt water lagoon is great for ocean lovers who are wave chickens. The pool and grounds make the resort.
Service, food, and rooms are just fine. Rooms are nothing special, but comfortable. We switched rooms on arrival because our first room's bathtub was a little dirty, but other than that the room was spotless and very comfortable. However, for the amount you pay to stay there, considering how hard you worked to earn your stay, everything should be PERFECT upon your arrival. As the days of staying at this gorgeous paradise went on, however, we forgot about the tub glitch. It didn't matter anymore!
Cost of drinks by the pool will shock the hell out of you. $30 for 2 little glasses of campari on the rocks?? The sweet bartenders felt our pain and apologized, claiming they don't make the rules, and know it's obscene. I reccommend going to Whalers general Store in poipu market and buying a bottle of liquor to enjoy in your room at night. Much cheaper (unless you're there to party, in which case you're on the wrong island-Kauai is a peaceful haven-no nightlife. Go to Maui or Oahu instead) I know vacation is not the time to be cheap, but on principal I cannot justify $15 for very average cocktails. Or, wait till happy hour when they have $8 drink specials. Some of the choices are bright blue, slushy, or ice-creamy, which is not my tase, but they do have mai tai specials on certain days. Perfect for a pre dinner drink.
Food at the resort is very "eh". Most of the food at the tourist-geared fancy restaurants have great ambiances but the same very average food. You'll soon get sick of the same options of overcooked Ono fish or mahi mahi. Go to Tidepools on a night when you're exhausted from hiking that day and dont wanna travel to an outside restaurant. But you won't be blown away by the food. Otherwise, the best meal we had was at Hamura Saimin, the best saimin place on the island. Its cheap, the place is a hole in the wall, and the saimin is delicious. I also reccommend going out for breakfast. You'll get slammed with a huge bill for a very "meh" breakfast. Swing over to starbucks in Poipu market and grab a breakfast sandwich or some oatmeal.. You're better off.
Grand Hyatt only loses a star for the food and plain rooms, but you should still stay here. Nothing could beat its beautiful grounds. Don't spend the vacation without leaving the grounds, though! Get the Ultimate Kauai guidebook by Andrew Doughty and explore, and you'll have the vacation of a lifetime!!!!
We found Kauai to be our favorite island, and Hyatt to be our favorite place to stay. We've been returning to the Hyatt most every year for several years now, It's a great place to unwind and enjoy the comforts of the hotel and all that Kauai has to offer.
The golf course is great, the staff very friendly, instructors helpful. The concierge helped us with all kinds of suggestions and reservations including restaurants, kayaking, zip lining, etc. And its Anara spa is one of the best around in the world. The restaurants are good, but I think a bit pricey - there are so many alternatives n Kauai for good restaurants that this is not a problem. All in all, a great vacation place to stay!
Update: The economic downturn has really affected the islands, and there are some good deals to be had with package deals, including the Hyatt.
I have never had to personally pay for a room at the Hyatt on Kauai. That's because I was a white local, now visitor and I live next door. Honestly best pool ever, hands down.... Its like a lazy river with water falls and a huge slide at the end!! There is a salt/sand pool which is really fun and you can rent a kayak to go around it.
One hint I learned as a kid was to hit the side of the wood by the coy fish, they all come rushing out in packs because that is the sign that you are feeding them... kinda mean but super cool. The art gallery is really nice and they do good fire dancing shows. Plus go in the morning to learn about their birds and you get to hold them too.

If I had a bajillion dollars, I would probably give this place five stars. But, by the end of our nine day stay, I was tired of being nickled and dimed for everything at the Hyatt.
The Good:
* The staff - very personable and extremely helpful. I injured myself and they arranged a free ride to the emergency room on a Saturday. It ended up being a very nice little tour given by our driver, a Kauaian native who knew everything about the island and told great stories.
* The pools - incredibly fun water stuff to do, including a salt water lagoon and a real water slide.
The Bad:
* Too many extra charges - for many things that seemed like they should be included in room pricing, given how expensive the rooms are. These include, but are not limited to, internet service, pool toys, shade umbrellas, and laundry soap.
The Average:
* The rooms - nice, but for $450 per night, I expect Mr. and Mrs. Hyatt to invite me to their fancy villa for a dinner of jewel encrusted chocolate swans and champagne, while Sting plays a private concert for us. No such luck. (Incidentally, we got a much better deal due to the wedding block discount pricing. If you ever catch me spending that much on a hotel, e-slap some sense into me.)
* The food - many onsite restaurants to choose from, but nothing particularly notable. Convenient if you want to get liquored up and stumble back to your bed.
Overall, nice place, but too pricey for what you get. I heard news from an employee (can't say who), that tourists can rent whole cottages on Kauai for under $100 per night. Perhaps we will go that way, from now on.
Unless Sting reads this and wants to give us a concert. So... just email me, Sting.

Mark and I went here on the second part of our honeymoon and although we ran into some challenges we still give it 4 stars. Let me enlighten you as to why....
After coming from the very expensive Four Seasons in Maui, it was refreshing to order a Mai Tai that was only $8.50. The hotel is beautiful with an open air lobby and beautiful grounds that include Koi ponds with swans, water falls, grassy areas with hammocks and the best feature of all, the salt water lagoon which I will get to in a second.
The general sleeping rooms are very old and outdated but I learned from the hotel that they are upgrading their rooms beginning next year. And let me tell you, it could not come fast enough. When we checked in we were really disappointed with the rooms as they were just REALLY old and run down. I went to talk to the manager and explained that we were on our honeymoon and he moved us into a beautiful ocean suite. 4 stars for Mr. Humphrey for creating return guests. We would have left there and never come back had he not upgraded us. Now we know what type of room we would stay in and that there is a light at the end of the tunnel with renovations.
The hotel offers a few nice Restaurants (Tidepool's & Dondero's) and some restaurants where you can just get a burger and fries. They have this incredible bar called Stevenson's Library which resembles a cigar lounge (because it used to be) with very dim lights, oak book shelves and pool tables and they offer very delicious cocktails and live jazz every night. It was fabulous!
As for the pool area, there were a lot of children and families there but the property is so large I barely noticed. They have an adult pool as well as a few others but I would bypass all of that and head to the salt water lagoon. Since the ocean is a little rougher in Kauai they have a man made salt water lagoon which was absolutely beautiful. You can lay on a raft and float around waterfalls and beautiful rock formations while sipping on a fruity cocktail. It was absolutely amazing. Oh and I highly recommend reserving the "Naupaka" cabana right at the lagoon edge. It's only $35 dollars a day and it was the best spot.
All and all we felt this hotel had a lot to offer from golf, restaurants, shopping, pools & lagoon and just overall beauty. We are definitely going back.

The pool is crazy OMG! Next time we have to try it out....
The shops are worth looking into :-)

This is the best hotel ever! Our family had a 2 bedroom suite with a view of the pools and ship wreck beach. The service is top. The staff is friendly and welcoming. This was a true vacation. I especially like the salt water lagoon pool ! I think this is one of the top hotels in all of Hawaii. We are always glad to go back.
Just returned from an 8 day stay at this fabulous property for a conference and a few days at the end for pleasure. I've stayed all over the world and this is one of the most beautiful hotels I've been at....and one of the best hotel staff's I have worked with.
The food was fabulous at every meal---whether a buffet for hundreds or a quiet dinner for the two of us.
The pool was never over-crowded. The lagoon was perfect for our 1 year old son to play at.
The best part was that, no matter what time of the day, whenever we left and came back the room had been cleaned and made up---more than I can say for most hotels!
Definitely the best place on the Island from what I saw!
Truth be told, I didn't stay here. Truth be told, in a drunken moment (and yes, I was carting around my child in a stroller), I stole some Hyatt beach towels. I then took them back to the condo where we were staying, washed and dried them, and the next day, my girlfriend and I carted the kids over to the lagoon pool at the Hyatt. We enjoyed the many ammenities given that no one questioned if we were guests or not (we had the towels to prove it!). The pool was marvelous and perfect for our wee ones.
Other delightful things I loved about the Hyatt:
-Seaview is perfect for an evening cocktail and their poke appetizer is divine. Sit outside and enjoy the warm air, ocean views, and whale watching.
-Stevenson's Library is perfect for an after dinner cocktail and drinks with friends when your kids are home with a babysitter
-Breakfast is superb at the Hyatt. The pancakes were fluffy and moist.
-Yum Cha offers tasty Asian food and a great mango martini. It's a little overpriced and the ambiance is a little strange, but the food is delish!

This place definitely rocks!
My wife and I stayed here for 3 nights in September 07 during the second leg of our 3-legged honeymoon. We are definitely going to stay here again when we come back to Kauai.
Firstly, this place is Ginormous! It took me almost 45 minutes to walk around the hotel portion of the property. The lobby is super dramatic and it flows through to a view of the ocean. We had a Pool View/Partial Ocean View room and though it was very nice, it was smaller than I expected it to be. Bathroom was okay, though it was a little dark because of the flourescent lighting.
My wife was sick the whole time we were on this island and the staff was pretty nice about all the excess tissue and medicine. She only left the hotel room to eat at Tidepools, the koi pond restaurant. They kept the hot water and tea coming and were pretty fast when it came to room service.
Tidepools was a truly awesome experience. The food was pricey, but it was very, very good. They gave us a pond-side table and I was able to almost secretly throw pieces of bread into the pond to get the koi to swarm next to us. Very cool!
The swimming pools are nice, the water slide is a little short, and there isn't a swim-up bar. The beach is pretty rough too, so casual swimming off the beach was impossible at the time we went. To make up for it, they created a saltwater swim lagoon, about 4' deep throughout, but drops down to ~12' in one spot to allow for some light diving.
The entire property is fairly isolated from other hotels, so there aren't a whole bunch of people coming on property from surrounding hotels.
The spa was pretty nice, but I was expecting a little more for the price of the services. Spalikulani was better in my opinion.
The place is beautiful though and I think it is the nicest hotel on the island, so if you're willing to pony up the scrilla, you would definitely have a good experience.
Stay here dudes!
Overall, the Grand Hyatt is a superb hotel- we stayed there for three nights from 3/16-3/19/08. Since I don't need to accentuate the positives,
the few NEGATIVES that are noteworthy are:
1) limited cell phone reception in guest room
2) feeling like you had to PROVE you were worthy to stay at their hotel- if you look like a local - asian american and not caucasian
3) the scrutiny at the pool's slide, you have to have a GREEN wristband..duh.
4) the stinginess of their pool towels- if you ask for ONE extra towel, it is in a dull beige color and not the green/white striped one
5) the strictness of the 30 minute pool table limit at Stevenson's library when it is already 1030pm (they close at 1130pm) and there is NO ONE at the pool tables!!
6) Plastic shower curtains! For $500+ dollars a night, I would like to have something less cheap.
Other than that, superb on many counts. However, maybe we'll try the Princeville next time.

Didn't stay here, but came two nights in a row this week for our friends Sarah and Chris' beautiful wedding and night-before cocktail reception. Unbelievable views, pristine beach, impeccable service, best Mojito I've EVER had, and delicious food. Everything seemed completely taken care-of, and we had the time of our lives here. And after the frustrations at our "hotel" in Kapaa, this is the only place I'll ever stay if I come back to Kauai, which is pretty unlikely since me and the beach and "extreme outdoor guy bullshit" don't get along at all.

5 stars only b/c i got to stay here for our honeymoon. Beautiful resort, beautiful pool and garden area, very steep prices!!! The service is great, everyone is very nice. but... they have a problem with bugs. We had a small roach in our room and there seemed to be swarms of little bugs flying at night. For the money you are paying to stay there you would think they could fix this...
anyway, I still highly recommend it. My only complaint is there lack of "inexpensive" eateries.

I spent four nights here back in June and loved it. The grounds are impeccable, the pools wondrous, and the rooms and hotel simply beautiful. The beach, though rough and a bit rocky, is nonetheless swimmable, provided you exercise caution. Wear some water shoes to protect your feet. There were boarders and surfers out there(locals) and both were having a blast. A golf course is next door and looked very nice. My golfing days are over, however, so I didn't play. The breakfast buffet was awesome. All kinds of breakfast foods and beverages. The employees here were phenomenal. Very polite and talkative. I definitely did not want to leave.

I didn't stay here, but my family did the luau, which was a ton of fun and not as cheesy as you'd think a luau would be. The food was also very good, considering it was a huge event. I would highly recommend it for families.
Their Anara Spa is also very nice (see my seperate review).
Maybe it was because I was't on my honeymoon and that is why I give my hotel here three stars. Now grant it is much improved from my last attempt at making my own reservations last month but still I give this place three stars.
The service was good and if you have the ability do stay in the Presidential suite. It was well stocked and cared for but also was my bill.
If you are looking for more of a local feel this isn't the place.
