I haven't lived in Bako for a number of years, but I lust after the orange beer at Grand China...I wake up with cold sweats dreaming about the crunchy-sweet-spicy goodness.
The only place with comparable orange beef is Fresh Taste in Palo Alto...which is my second favorite Chinese place.
I'm heading to Bako for the holidays...and you can bet that I'll be eating here at least once. -

As you probably all know the Grand China is closed. Chuck E. Cheese wanted to expand so they gave the landlord enought money to get them to evict the restaurant. Too bad. I loved eating there. I loved the people who ran it. It was a real loss.

Is it good? Yeah, it's good. I've never had anything I didn't like here. I can't say that anything absolutely is the best but I think that's because I gave all those honors to Great Castle Chinese Restaurant. I would say that the food at Grand China is nothing to sneeze at though. It's delish. The one thing over Great Castle though is their lunch menu is awesome. You recieve your guaranteed to delight dish with an egg roll, fried wonton, and sweet and sour soup all for one more than fair price. There is a reason that lunch hours are so busy there.
I'm throwing down the gauntlet. Go there and prove me wrong. I dare you. Yeah...that's right, I'm daring you. You personally. Eat and try not to enjoy. Someones going to be wrong but it will certainly not be me. -

Typical Americanized Chinese food. Nothing impressive. Good, but not great. The dining area is kinda cool, but kinda weird. It's like you're eating in a rain forest, which never made sense to me b/c it's supposed to be a Chinese restaurant. Maybe it's supposed to capture what the rain forests in China looked like centuries ago? You know...before they cut the majority of it down..not that I'm some environmentalist or anything. 2 Stars
My cousin used to come here a lot with his Chinese friend. They loved the dim sum here (it's a lunch thing). I've personally never tried it, but they'd eat here every weekend just for the dim sum. But I guess people generally don't come here for dim sum, but instead go for the flavors of orange chicken...you know, stuff you get at fast food Chinese joints. 3.5 stars for the dimsum.

This is easily the best Chinese place in Bakersfield. I end up eating at Great Castle more often since it is closer to my work, but I would much rather eat at Grand China. Nothing compares to their orange chicken and beef I would presume, but I have never tried the beef. They have these fantastically crispy little bits of chicken covered in a spicy orange sauce. I am pretty sure it is the best orange chicken in the world. They also have great mu shu pork. Not only is the food great, but the woman who owns and runs the place is super friendly and accommodating. Great little restaurant.
