Review from Hungry Couple N.
New York, NY
We honestly don't recall when this place opened but it was probably a couple of years ago. Walking past, it didn't seem like much more than a deli so we kept walking. But two things happened last summer - we got a puppy and Gracie's set up outdoor tables, nicely placed under an awning and enclosed by pretty planter boxes. We longed to be able to have our puppy with us when we ate out and noticed that many other couples did the same and the place was busy. Suddenly the run-of-the-mill deli seemed like something worth trying.
So, one gorgeous Sunday we set off on a stroll by the river with the pup and arrived back at Grace's (it's on our way home) just in time for a late lunch. The outdoor diners were still in full force but we found a table and began studying a menu that offered much more than deli food. That first time we tried chicken souvlaki platters that came with wonderful little Greek salads. On subsequent visits (and there were many) we sampled the burgers and brunch specials. All were excellent and the fries are especially notable. They appear to be coated with some kind of breading that makes them exceptionally delicious.
We spent the whole of the summer enjoying Gracie's food and outdoor ambiance. Rarely was there a weekend when we were in the city that didn't include a stop there. We mourned the passing of outdoor dining season, when Gracie's finally pulled in the tables and planters. We talked all winter of when it might be warm enough to sit outside there again.
This coming weekend will mark the first day of spring. Our puppy is almost a year old. The weather forecast calls for 70 degrees. The rest is inevitable. If you should be passing by Gracie's this Sunday and see a couple wolfing down french fries with a beautiful spaniel lying next to them, do say hi! -

Unless you like charbroiled hamburgers, don't get the hamburger. It's awful. Will go back to try other things though because of the good reviews and convenience to where I live.

We often choose Gracie's Cafe over the Barking Dog down the street. The wait staff is usually running around crazy busy, but they're friendly and have always gotten the order right.
I like that I can bring my dog along and eat on the patio...usually breakfast. I'm a fan of their low-fat fritata brunch. It doesn't seem like the kind of place to serve a mimosa, but I'm grateful they do. -

My co-worker took me a few weeks ago when we both had an insane day at work and I was craving you guessed it - burgers!!
The first time I came to this place, I had the NY Burger which was basically a nice thick medium cooked beef patty with bacon, american cheese, fried onions and bleu cheese dressing that came with a healthy serving of spicy fries.
Since I wanted to counter balance the fattyness - I opted for the sunrise smoothie (yes I do believe pureed fruit with yogurt will prevent the onset of my impending heart attack)
Consequently, I've returned to this place several times, choosing the California and the East Side burger respectively. Both times these experiences with the burgers hit the spot! -

Worst. Coffee. EVER.
I figured it would be safe to get a latte here. Why not? Well, the latte tasted more like day-old, reheated coffee with some lukewarm milk and a pathetic topping of milk foam. The only good thing about the coffee was that when I spilled it on myself, it wasn't hot enough to burn me. -

I don't really care for the food here, except for the french toasts.
This is a very small diner, so if you want speedy fast food, don't count on it.
I'm usually hung over on Saturdays and order around 10:45-11:00 and it takes them over 45 minutes to make french toasts and deliver them to two blocks away!!
Once it rained and it took over an hour for them to delivery. The guy on the phone was SUPER rude and didn't even apologize.
Also, on the weekend they only have one waitress for brunch and there are children everywhere screaming and crying.
UPDATE (5/6/2010)
I just ordered a bagel and lox (cost around $9) and my bagel was cold and not toasted and very stale! They get their bagels from an outsider vendor, so of course they cannot guarantee the freshness, but at least toast them!
They changed my order, but wrote "You didn't ask for toasted". What place doesn't toast your bagel?! That's craziness.
If you decide to order from these people, make sure to remind them it needs to be toasted- they lack common sense. -

This cafe was the first place that me and the misses went to eat at after a lengthy bus ride from D.C... it was a good way to start off the New York part of our vacation! (:
We just checked in to our at-first shady looking hostel which ended up being pretty cool! We decided to take a walk and find a restaurant on the way and we stumbled across this cafe.
The burgers were pretty hefty and the fries looked amazing at first sight. They were the perfect color. The fries were golden, had colors of spice, and were that good-looking orange.. I hope you get what I mean. The portions looked great, and the prices weren't bad either. After kind of arguing about what kind of food we wanted, we decided to eat here.
The waiter gave us a seat outside, a totally new experience to grub near the sidewalk! I ordered the Texas burger which had a fried egg inside, and $2.00 more for veggies/fries. SO WORTH IT! My girlfriend enjoyed her burger a lot too. It looked good (minus the fungus aka mushrooms, ew). The patty was charbroiled perfectly and the fries lived up to what they looked like, mmm! Everything was great, except our water refill was kind of lagging... but my girlfriend and I both agreed that it seriously tasted like bottled water, so it evens out. We got water because the only beverages they have are bottled drinks.
Definitely coming back to this place again :] -

Since my husband and I moved to the Upper East side, we've tried out a lot of nearby restaurants. Good service has been hard to come by, and we've had quite a few bad experiences. Glad to say-Gracie's Cafe was a good experience. We stopped in for a quick dinner, and the guy (maybe the owner? not sure.) serving was very friendly.
I ordered some kind of vegetarian flatbread sandwich, which I regretted when I saw the cook grab the pre-made sandwich from the display cooler. The taste was rather bland. The french fries were good though. My husband enjoyed his BLT. I would probably go back and order something different, because the service was good. -

This place is what it is. You can stop in and get a bagel, a salad or some coffee and get it rather quickly. I've been here a couple of times to get a salad. It's nothing special and slightly overpriced, but it's the only salad place withing a 3-block radius of my friend's place. Also, the service has always been exceptionally friendly here. I don't know if I would actually sit to eat here, but it's a good grab-and-go spot. Their bagels are insanely overpriced though ($2.99 for a plain bagel with cream cheese)?!?

While it's conveniently across the street, it's 50/50 if your order will be right and prepared with dignity. Some of the help is very nice, others resent your being there. For the cost, you can get better.

We ordered here for the first time. Not only was the food poor, it was inaccurately described. I ask if the Beef Gyro was a solid piece of meat or if it was made from chopped meat. I was assured it was solid meat. It was not. My husband ordered fried fillet "Dinner Special". It came as a sandwich. The fillet was so thin you could almost read a newspaper through it. Not surprisingly, it was overcooked to the point it was nearly petrified. I don't think I have had food this bad since college.

I eat here since it's close. It's not amazing food but it will do, they have a lot of variety on their menu. I like their spinach pie which one can share since they have big portions.

I've worked around the corner from this place for a while but this week was my first time having lunch there. I thought the food was pretty good - everything seemed fresh and was served quickly (I got take out). I ordered a gyro and the meat wasn't that great but the pita and salad inside were fresh and the tzaziki was delicious (lots of dill!). A Greek salad and fries came with my order. The salad exceeded my expectations! I thought that since it was just a side it would be some Romaine lettuce with feta and olives sprinkled in. WRONG! My salad had delicious chunks of feta, olive slices, red onion, tomato, and a dolma hidden at the bottom! I was impressed. I don't think I'd order the gyro again but I'll go back!

I absolutely would NOT recommend this place. I went here a couple of times and the food was fine, but the last time, the waitress was beyond rude. Considering the prices, it is not worth dealing with rude people. Id rather walk an extra block or two and get better quality with a smile (or at least without the attitude).

It was our first time ordering from this diner yesterday.
We recieved our food about 1/2 an hour later, and it was diner food of the worst kind. We noticed our cream of turkey soup was missing so we called back, and the guy on the phone said they would bring it right over.
10 minutes later the delivery guy tries to charge us for the soup that is clearly already added in on the reciept!!
We called the guy on the phone who was adamant that the soup was never added into the order...what he didn't realize was that we had the order ticket right in front of us!!
We sent the delivery guy back with his soup and told him to forget it...
We will never be ordering from here again as we had a really disappointing experience...
1 star for overpriced crappy food, and the wrost service EVER! -

Forgettable breakfast, is it just identical to Gracie Mews? I don't get the point, same place 1 ave apart? Maybe lunch is better.

I really enjoy going to this spot. They seem to have a great variety of things I like to eat. I love sitting outdoors when they have their tables set up in the summer too!

all the reviews for this place are so weird.
go if you're hungry and in the neighborhood and want diner-variety food.
i got a special here once and it was pretty bad, but then i went back and got a burger and soda for like $6.50 and it was a great deal.
great people-watching, as you can imagine.
