I booked a cut and color with Joy after reading rave after rave review and I'm so glad I did. She is a color magic worker if I ever did see one and I've been dyeing my hair both professionally and at home since I was fourteen.

I walked in with grown out roots, a brassy washed-out red from an old dye job, hay-like highlights, and split ends up the wazoo--I had so much stuff going on on my head, it was embarrassing! I asked for a uniform cool ash brown color, which I knew to be a nearly impossible feat, and I could hardly believe my eyes when Joy delivered.

I paid $145 for it all and I don't regret a penny. It's a decent price for everything I had done. I've paid hundreds more than that on much less satisfactory hair work.

I hadn't asked for anything spectacular in terms of the cut, just a trim, and that's what I got. So, it was perfect. I'll be coming through Grace again if I get the chance!

I just broke my rolling New Years party with taking some beat up hair to Lindsey.  She put it right back on track.  I went from long crazy, akward, grow out, to a very elegant luxury long hair look.

It's hard to get a low maintenance cut for long hair that still looks stellar when down, but she nailed it.

Lindsey - long hair - awesome.  peace.

Based on the reviews I decided to give Grace Salon a chance, and  I'm glad I did! When i schedule my appointment i was greeted by a kind receptionist that was able to answer all my questions, that alone made me happy.  My appointment was with Nathan, super nice young man that was excited, knowledgable and so sweet. I had a partial highlight and haircut. Appointment lasted close to 2 1/2 hours, pretty standard. A couple days after my appointment I noticed a couple things that I was unhappy with as far as color and my cut. I called the salon and scheduled an appointment to have Nathan rectify the issues. The receptionist was very friendly again and Nathan was happy to thin out my hair and add highlights to the front of my hair line.
I'm more then happy with the service I have received and will be seeing Nathan again in 7 weeks!

I had my hair cut and colored here several times. I was never satisfied with the outcome. Not only did I pay 130.00 for my service, but my hair looked awful afterwards. I bleached my hair to dye it a different color. They left the bleach on too long and killed my hair. The color was so off from what I wanted it to be, I had to go to Bishop's to have all of my hair cut off, into a very short cut, to salvage the rest of my hair. Then I had to get a corrective color done. I spent 50.00 for all of this at Bishops. If I would have known I would get a better haircut and color for 80.00 less, I would have gone there in the first place.

I had Frankie cut and color my hair last week.  Completely random that I got him, I used a groupon I purchased.  Ive been uncommitted to a hairdresser for several years- not quite finding all I want in one hairdresser.  I love the way he cut my hair, I like the color he used on my hair.  I thought he was an excellent listener about what I did and did not want with my cut and color.  He deserves an excellent review.  Im going back to him!  Young hairdresser, fairly new to the profession and seems to have talent and know what  he is doing.  The salon was clean, bright and airy- good atmosphere and cleanliness are important to me!
He also has a cute black lab mix dog- and that always helps, in my book!  Thankyou again Frankie!

I've been searching so long trying to find "THE ONE".... you know.. someone who listens, who gets me, who knows what I want and how I want.  Someone who's gentle, forgiving and honest.

yes... all that I found at Grace hair salon with Lilli Kendle.

I was late for my appt and Grace Hair Salon allowed me to at least pick a service - color/hair cut and return for the other one.  this review is just for coloring by Lilli.  She was pretty quiet... not a chatty stylist but I don't mind at all.  She listened to what I wanted and made some recommendations.  Everything that I asked for and she promised were met and delivered.  Highlights for my waist long hair were only $85.

They used their own created hair product line - Mada.  You can find more info here:
    http://www.madahair.co...

Spray shampoo is a pretty different concept. Once I finish up what I have I may give it a try.  Overall costs of products seemed slightly higher ($24 for 8.4oz shampoo) but supposedly their products last longer than others.

I'll be a regular from now on.

I read many positive reviews about Lindsay and fine hair.  Based on that I booked a cut.  My last cut- out of state was so great it lasted for 3 months.  My hair is a challenge since it is fine and has many fine layers and it takes someone who really knows how to cut fine layers.   Although I had to pay extra for a consultation I was out of there in 45 minutes.  Lindsay spent most of her time rapidly cutting deep layers and very little time listening to me and being careful.   After I made a few suggestions to get the cut back on track ,  Lindsay was annoyed and wanted me out of there. The last 3 inches of my hair are now so thin that you can see through them because the top layers were cut too deep.

Maybe it was bad day, but I wont be back.  IF you have  long hair, don't need  high style cut,  and don't have a lot of layers she might be fine for a trim.  It was a very Portland "slacker" experience. There was NO attempt to make sure I was satisfied.  In the last week 10 people have asked me "what happened to your great hair". It is that bad.  And every time someone asks me I tell them who cut it and where.

WORST COLOR JOB EVER. If i could give this salon zero stars i would.  I have been getting my hair colored for more than ten years and I have never had this bad of an experience.  I had Nathan as my stylist and I told him I was open to his color suggestions (as far as specific shades go), but said I absolutely did not want to go darker at all.  I think he completely ignored my request because he made my medium browish/red hair almost black.  After I got home I called the salon and they offered to have the same stylist fix the color. Do they really think I would trust him again?!?  Absolutely not.

In addition to this, usually when I leave the salon, my hair is shiny and beautiful and wonderfully styled.  When Nathan finished, my hair looked like straw and was styled worse than a bad hair day.

Outside of this, I agree with some of the other reviews that this salon was not very friendly or welcoming.  You might be reading this and wondering why I tried a new salon if I've been getting my hair colored for so many years...I used to live in Seattle and haven't found a great place yet in Portland.  So I tried using a Groupon for this cut/color and maybe that is why he made my hair look like so bad.  Lesson learned, I won't be trying any Groupon hair deals in the future.

Also, I hate calling out a specific stylist for a bad review, but since there are other good reviews listed for Nathan, I have to comment since I would hate to have someone else go through this same experience.  Now I'm stuck paying for "corrective coloring services" at another salon and having my hair go through the damaging bleaching processing (which will be a first for me).

When I moved to Portland two years ago I started going to Grace hair salon.  Lindsey cut and highlighted my hair multiple times and she is great - however she only works part time - and when I became a mom her schedule no longer worked with mine.  She had to cancel an appointment with me and I stopped into the shop to reschedule because I was in the area.

The receptionist was working with me to find another time when another client walked up and wanted to check out.  The receptionist completely blanked me and began serving the other client.  After standing there for a few moments and still being ignored - with Thad Grace standing next to the other client - I walked out.  I received a follow-up call from the receptionist apologizing but I have not gone back because it is too much effort to schedule an appointment that should be painless to do.  I also felt that each customer should be treating equally.  This wasn't the case in this instance.

Lindsey has been cutting my hair for 7 years. She has delivered consistent and superior results that whole time. I get compliments on my hair often, hard to achieve for a man.

I confidently recommend her to men AND women. She has been in the fashion industry for 8 years now and has excelled at all she's done.

She's easy to talk to and Grace is a comfortable atmosphere. Go see her!

I took a chance based on the ratings here and scored.  Nathan was attentive, pleasant and gave me the best cut I've had in a long time. We went from super long to super short. I had a sense of what I wanted, and he helped through a consultation and looking through magazines together for about 15 minutes to hone it in.  I love my cut. I'll be going back without hesitation.

This 5 star rating is for MARINA ONLY!  I have not tried any other stylist, and it is because of her that I kept coming back. Let me tell you, when it comes to hair cuts, I am a snob. When I found out it was $35.00 for a haircut, I was a skeptical since I was used to paying $80.00 dollars in the bay. However, these $35.00 haircuts I was getting from Marina were better than any expensive haircut i've gotten.

I moved to Portland for a year and a half and came to Grace Salon based on their goods reviews. The woman on the phone booked me with Marina. She is so nice, so easy to talk to, and I really looked forward to getting my hair cut by her! She gave me great advise and gave me EXACTLY what I asked for. I went to her three times over the course of my stay, and always came out feeling great, pleased, and relaxed.

I have moved back to the Bay Area, and really wish I could get a haircut by her! I have already gone to a few upscale expensive salons, and I'm never pleased. I am coming up to visit Portland again in July and may have to schedule my trip around an appointment with her.

The salon receptionists are always nice, and the salon itself is upscale. I like this place a lot! The location is great too, not in too busy of a neighborhood. I was able to find parking right in front for all haircuts (weekday mornings).

I've been going to Joy at Grace Salon for about 3 years now.  Before I moved to Portland I had a great stylist in Southern California that I had been going to since before puberty.  I was nervous to have to find somewhere/someone new but booked with Joy due to the rave reviews she had here on Yelp.

I definitely haven't been disappointed!  Joy has taken over my stylings like she's been working on my hair all my life.  She's taken me to a deep brunette, back to blonde, mixed some reds in there - basically the works!  She was also responsible for chopping off 13" of my hair to donate to Locks of Love back in early 2010.  The cute A-line she gave me garnered many compliments.

I dig the atmosphere of the salon - they always have fresh music playing.  Its always clean, well stocked, and I'm always offered a glass of water.  They are even kind enough to refill the parking meter for me if I'm stuck under a steamer with foil in my hair.  I definitely recommend this salon (and Joy especially) to anyone looking for an awesome haircut/color in Portland!

I had my hair cut ages ago at Grace and I went back again for a long overdue cut and a little bit of color.

Nathan was my stylist and he did exactly what I wanted him to do; highlights that look natural. He was fastidious in foiling my hair, even though it took the better part of 3 hours (I have a lot of hair). He was thorough and detail oriented and made my hair look as if I were back in the California sun again.

I highly recommend Nathan as well as Grace salon. The ambiance was open, modern and minimal without being pretentious. There was a wide variety of people getting their hair done and everyone was helpful and nice.

See Nathan if you have long hair (and want to keep it that way) and if you want any color or highlights done. This man knows what he's doing.

Thank you Nathan and Grace Hair Salon!

I really dig this salon. I had my hair cut there for over 3 years before I moved to NY. For what it's worth I am a guy.

The atmosphere is chill (they play downtempo- my favorite), and everyone is amiable and down to earth. I was a bit bummed that their last receptionist left-she was amazing. The best receptionist of any service-oriented business I've ever been to. The new reception staff isn't bad, just not great.

However, what you really go to a salon for is the cut, and Marina is fantastic. Great conversationalist, and I always walk out of there with a great cut. I've had days where I wanted something specific, and she delivered. I've had days where I go in and say "do something awesome, I don't care what" and she delivered.

My hair is insanely thick and gets super puffy when it gets dry. In addition, I have a crazy cowlick that takes over my head unless cut just right. It takes a great hair stylist to handle my treacherous topography, and she does a phenomenal job each and every time.

Over the three years I went there, I felt like Marina and I became good friends, and I'll definitely miss her and the crew over at Grace.

this review is for THAD GRACE
A year ago I had a baby and while my life got that much more fun, my hair didn't.  Like most new mom's I couldn't find the time to take care of myself and a new baby.  My hair had become a mess.  I had outgrowth to my ears and my hair had lost all it's shape.  I decided it was time to regain the beauty and charm that had gotten me pregos in the first place...haha.  So I began my search online and after checking out multiple salons I decided on Grace.  I chose Thad the owner because He seemed to really care about his profession.  I called and guess what I had to wait for 3 months.  I guess this is where the saying "all good things come to those who wait" comes in.  Because I did wait and I got an amazing hair cut and color.  Thad was right on time (not that I would care otherwise, but that matters to some people).  He gave me a warm greeting and offered some coffee.  He asked what I wanted to do.  I told him I wanted to look young and sexy.  My previous stylist  had made me a redhead.  I was open to any color.  He asked how I felt about chocolate brown, keeping most of the length, and adding bangs.  sounded good to me!  Thad was very easy to talk to.  He explained to me what type of hair I had, gave me styling tips, and was nice to have conversation with.  Now for the bangs.  I do have a cowlick  front and center.  Not a problem for Thad.  My bangs still look great.  I've had plenty of bad fringes cut.  Thinning shears on thin cowlick hair is not a good look!  None of that here! after about an hour and a half.  I was me again! My hair was cute, yet sexy.  At least that's what my husband said.  As for the price $180 for the whole shebang.  In Portland I guess that's kind of pricey.  But at the end of the day, you get what you pay for. I got a luxurious cut in a very professional setting.  I also left with some great product that leaves my hair feeling silky and smelling like I just walked out of the salon.  I highly recommend getting in with Thad he's worth the wait and price.

Likes: friendly staff & stylists. Nice modern aesthetic. Able to accomodate me last minute with an appointment.
Did not like: my haircut! Which is the whole point right? I have really short curly hair, with the sides shaved short. I already had a bad haircut here in PDX. I thought if I went to a more modern, hip place they would know what I want. I think the young lady I had might have been new because it only cost $30 and I know stylists charge more as they gain experience. Anyhoot, the cut on top was alright but the shaved sides, pretty bad. It looked like I had lines shaved in my head, very uneven. My husband had to fix it with his clippers. Boo hoo. And No, I couldnt go back because it was closed for Holidays. Why cant I find a stylist here who knows how to cut my hair?

Marina is amazing! She's been my hair gal for just over 4 months now, beginning when I went from shoulder length hair to a pixie cut. She nailed it and every time I go in for trims I love the cut even more. She has me come in for neck trims (free of charge) between cuts so it's always looking pulled together. In my pre-Marina days I always left my appointment feeling like I need to go home and style it the way I thought it should be... I now leave my appointments and continue with my day without feeling like I need to restyle my hair. Marina's fun to chat with and very genuine.

The salon itself is very clean, relaxing and comfortable. The receptionists have always been polite and cheery.

I found Grace Hair Salon on Yelp when I moved to Portland this summer... glad I listened to the reviews I found and want to keep it going.

Oh How I wish I read Olivia C's review. I went into Grace which is in the building I live in after seeing other nice reviews and made an appointment. I perhaps should have chosen Megan/Marina/Lindsay/Trish not sure but I didn't, the receptionist made me the appointment. I sat in Nathan's chair, he was lovely to chat with, a great chap. My hair wasn't wrapped properly after washing and I was getting soaked through the cape.  I showed him a photo, I wanted to go back to bangs.  He commented, he noticed my cowlick at the front right side of forehead.  I felt more at ease since he caught that.

He cut for almost a full hour, we chatted, he noticed that I have more hair on the left side of my head, another good sign.  He was so sweet, gave me a list of all the joints I should check out, etc. since I am new to PDX.  At the end of the hour, I saw the back, it looked fine, the front, it looks good.  Nathan was perceptive though a bit clumsy at moments.  So why the low stars?

My hair doesn't look like the photo and I don't have the bangs that I wanted (which was also in the photo) - I know I don't have the exact type of hair, it's thin but not as fine but the decisions he made wasn't fully explained in light of this difference.  He's got the customer service down, he is a new stylist, I do think that experience will help in delivering closer to what the client asks.  If you get Nathan, know that the cut will be insanely cheap at $30 and it will be a decent cut, but that he will deviate from the vision that you have for yourself.

I booked another appointment to go back to my hair stylist in new york,  since I will conveniently be in NYC next week. I will probably drop $100 but I will get exactly the cut I want.  If I have to fly and pay that much more to get what I want, well, I am the kind of person that will.

So, I don't like to share.

No, I'm not an only child. But I will say that growing up, I had two older brothers and a daddy who loved to spoil me.

So when I find something good, it's gotta be REALLY good for me to be willing to share it with others. Because at that point the guilt factor kicks in, as the business is so kick ass that I have to (just HAVE TO) tell others how great the place really is.

I should also say that it was you, fellow Yelpers (or Yelpians, whatever you want to call yourselves) that helped me, after a horrible haircut that left me traumatized, find salvation at Grace.

I had never previously gone back to the same hair stylist until I began going here. The ambiance is cool, hip, while at the same time welcoming. And the front desk staff is ALWAYS accommodating and super friendly. Whenever I call in they make sure to fit me in as soon as they can.

    And the cut? Fuggeddaboudit!

    It rocks.

UGH, so i broke both of my collarbones last week in a freak bicycle accident involving an asshole driving a mini cooper (another story, for another time my dears), and since then i have been completely unable to do my own hair. (and by "do," i mean simple BRUSHING and PUTTING IT IN A PONYTAIL.) while some women may be completely fine with relying on their male significant others to do their hair for them, i couldn't stand it about after about three days and had to find a way to make my hair look okay even when mismanaged by inexperienced hands.

so i threw in "hair for azns" into the yelp search and grace popped up. i don't even know why "azn" was really an important detail, but i imagined getting a weird razor cut a la the locust just cuz my hair is super straight, thick, and jet black, and that was NOT what i wanted. none of that hipster shit for me.

i called at about noon and asked for an appointment "as soon as possible." they scheduled me in for 5:30pm. nice.

i arrived at 5:30 and waited about five minutes. i was offered water, tea, coffee, or booze. i would've opted for booze if only i wasn't already on tons and tons of pain meds thanks to my collarbones! so i had a water. i was introduced to lindsay who did a quick analysis of my hair and listened to my demands: keep it long, decrease the volume, get rid of the dead ends, make sure it looks good in a sloppy ponytail.

50 minutes later, i walked out looking like a brand new woman...or at least a better-looking one. lindsay is a skilled woman. take comfort in the fact that she knows exactly what she's doing with her shears. when i said i just wanted a little bit off in length just to get rid of the dead ends, i lost the ends with almost no length lost at all. sweet! (vs. butchers and mothers who will go in and lop off two or three inches as if growing all that hair didn't take any effort, bastards!) now i can just keep on growin!

there was also a point where i asked if she could decrease the volume just a wee bit more and she warned me saying, "well, that sort of gets into the wispy realm/rocker look." tru dat gurl, i don't need that hipster shit. thanks! she heard my cries and felt my pains and tended to me like a mother (but not my mom) would.

now, my boyfriend can leave me looking untamed and tied up like pebbles and bam bam...but i'll still look amazing. thanks grace salon.

LINDSEY IS AWESOME FOR FINE/THIN HAIR!!!

Aside from a occasional 1" trim every year or so, I haven't had my hair "cut" in 17+ years. So for my 30th bday last week I decided to take the plunge and try something completely different, but I was absolutely terrified as I had grown attached to my long hair.

I made an appointment with Lindsey as I was told she was great with thin/fine hair, and honestly I've heard too many horror stories of people with my hair type going to any salon and being butchered by stylists who treat it like "normal" hair. She immediately understood that I was terrified and slowly eased me through the transition. I described to her what I wanted and how much time I was willing to commit to styling in the morning. She gave me exactly what I had asked for and walked me through the styling instructions so I would be happy with it everyday.

I absolutely love my hair! It's the perfect cut for my facial structure, I *finally* have the volume I've always wanted without my hair looking "choppy", and I've never been happier!

I look good. I mean really good. So much so in fact that I'd really love to yell at everyone to come and see how good I look. (Just watched Anchorman for the 63rd time last night, sorry.) But honestly, I really love my hair. I don't happen to think that my hair is easy to cut either. Besides that I happen to be a cut-o-phobe. But my experience at Grace was nothing short of rocktacular. That's right, a new, mashed up word is made for Grace Hair Salon.

I made my appointment on Friday around noon and was able to get in for a cut & color the next day at 1230. Very nice, I thought to myself. During the next 24 hours I obsessed about how I wanted my haircut, short...long...in between...layers...bangs! Ah! I was scared. But the second I sat down in Patrick's chair and he started talking to me my mind was at ease. He seemed to have an idea of how I wanted my hair to look and went straight to work.

The outcome was nothing short of everything I had wanted, yet was unable to convey to him. The color looks so natural and the cut is what I have been dying for. I would recommend him to anyone I know. In fact, I'll probably gush about how awesome he is to anyone. Plus he's from Wisconsin and I happen to love Midwesterners!

My instructions to you are quite simple, Go to Grace, love your hair, repeat.

When it comes to my luscious locks I'm not afraid to spend what little money I have on a haircut because, as a friend once told me, "you wear your hair everyday."

I waited to write this review so that I wouldn't rave about a fabulous hair cut only to realize two months later that it only looked weird and funky as it grew out.  However, the time for truth has come: Grace is Great.

Joy has both cut & colored my hair and gotten me through a transition from shorter blond hair to long dark hair and her cuts kept me feeling stylish and happy with my hair the whole way through (no awkward transition periods where I just wished my hair would grow already!).  She is laid back and manages to make the perfect cut and color seem effortless.

The salon itself is filled with a range of clients from young urban pearlies to older people.  The one thing every client seems to have  in common is a desire for a great cut in a hip environment that isn't snooty or overly trendy.  The staff are very sweet, professional, and accommodating.  Costs are comparable with other similar salons in the Portland downtown area (priceyish but what you'd expect).  My favorite part of the salon: there are windows everywhere and all that natural light makes me feel happy and relaxed!

I came here to get my hair done for my very casual wedding.  I walked in the door and the guy who was fixin' my hair named Collin asked what I was looking for I told him some ringlets or just a blow dry since my hair is only chin-length, then I told him I was getting married. He lit up! He was so happy and told me that he could "work magic" and get my hair into an up do.  It took 40 minutes, he used over 50 pins and made two mini-ponytails for volume and voila it was up and up for good.

It looked amazing, he made it into a curly twist and it stayed all night long without looking like a helmet.  I even kept my hair in that night when after the ceremony I went to my friends hotel and had some champagne.  It cost about $50 and the hairdresser was fabulous, it relaxed me so much I was on a cloud all day.

When I set up my appointment I was told that he was the best at special occasion hair and he was.  the place was modern and I loved the way they keep their tools in huge tool boxes.

If I could attach a hair picture I would!  He did preform "Magic" like he said he could!!!

Walk into Grace Salon, and you know just by looking around that you're going to get a hip haircut. Thanks to all the hard work of their employees, the space is beautiful and stylish.
Until I moved away from Portland, the very talented and vivacious Eve was my hair's one and only. I followed her magical scissors from salon to salon because she knows how to turn my jumble of curls into a cute little hairdo. I've sent multiple friends to her, all of whom have been converted because she listens to what you want and makes sure that you're happy with the haircut.
Sorry Mom, the real reason I'm visiting Portland in a few months isn't for your birthday, it's so I can get my hair cut here.

I am brand new to the area and am originally from the Bay Area where Yelp was born. I have come to live by yelp, but have discovered since moving here it's hit or miss with the reviews.

I decided to try Grace Hair because it had the most substantial reviews out of a lot of hair salons. I'm thrilled with my choice. It's a good blend between modern and funky. I saw Megan and she was awesome. I like to change things up with my hair, but am growing it out so we could only play with the color. She was spot on with her decisions and we will probably try something more dramatic next time. She wasn't expensive compared to Bay Area prices, but may be a little pricier than most people here. However its always worth spending more on somewhere taking care of your hair. I'm very excited about working with Megan in the future.

I just left Grace a short while ago and WOW, I really love my haircut and color.  Joy is just about my favorite person in Portland right about now.  She is AWESOME.  Thank you Laura N for suggesting her and for all the reviews that mention her.  I am super happy with my hair!

OK, first....the salon itself is super cool but not uncomfortably hip.  I love the warehouse vibe and style.  Very cool.  I was immediately greeted with a smile and Joy made me feel quite at home!  We talked for a while...we discussed my hair, how I normally style it, what type of work I do, what color I was looking for, and how my hair tends to fall on its own.  I was quite impressed with how thorough Joy was and how much time she took to find out what I was looking for.  Plus Joy was very helpful with suggesting a color, we talked quite a bit about that too.  Also, they use Goldwell products, HURRAY for that!  I have been looking for a salon that used Goldwell and am happy to have found one!

My cut and my color are so awesome.  This is the best cut I have had in a long time.  I mentioned to Joy that my  previous salon in Los Angeles used Goldwell and perhaps the next time I came I could bring in the formula/equation that they used to compare the two colors.  Joy was right on board and told me that she welcomed feedback on the cut too.  As of today, my feedback is.........................JOY RULES!

Oh, and my husband loved it too, he has already told me a bunch of times how much he likes it.  Looks like I found my salon!

I'm not the type of person that usually pays $35 for a haircut.  I prefer easy, low-maintenance styles, so I usually just go wherever and get a trim.  But it had been 18+ months since my last haircut so I decided to go for it.  I read all the great reviews about Grace Salon so I booked an appt.

Eve was great.  She had to shampoo and comb out my ratsnest before cutting it in half and she gave me a great, simple, but well done cut.  She took her time and made conversation, but not the forced kind.  There were several other clients in the salon at the time so it was fun listening to them all.

I ended up paying $90 for the cut, 2 products, and tip (I tipped heavy because my hair was more than just your normal cut) and it was worth it. .

2 days out, I'm super satisfied and so glad I chose Grace Salon.  I made an appt for my husband with Eve for a haircut tonight and I will definitely go back, though probably sooner than 18 months from now.

I spent the last three and a half years living in a city known for being hip, cutting edge, stylish, forward-thinking, etc. etc. What that meant for me is that I wound up with some of the worst hair cuts and color jobs I've ever had. It's hard out there for a pimp. Enter Grace Hair Salon! I found them through this site, and after reading good things about Eve, booked an appointment.

    That was this morning.

This afternoon, my sense of relief is palpable. Not only did I get a great color job, but I found someone who *gasp* actually LISTENS. I gave her the history on my hair, and told her what I wanted. She enlisted input from the salon's owner Thad (who was quite gracious and helpful) to make sure it was done the best possible way.

Not only did I get great color from a helpful and friendly stylist, but it was really inexpensive, comparatively speaking. Can't say enough good things!

Grace is an ambitious new hair salon in the Pearl that is quickly establishing itself as one of Portland's hottest hair spots. The location is sparkling and hip, with a graffiti mural on one wall and a rotating art selection on another. The stylists have their fingers on the pulse, and are both reliable and cutting edge.

I have my hair done by Aaron McClure, a charming hipster with the awesome ability to figure out what I want when even I don't know. A  week later I sent my best guy friend to see Aaron, and he came back with the best hair yet!

I decided to wait to write my review after having a few appointments.  I've been in for a cut & single process color, complementary bang trim, and cut, color & highlights, and feel I've had enough exposure to the salon to comment on its consistency.

Salon Reception & Staff: Very friendly, professional, and helpful.

Salon vibe: Modern, comfortable, and easy going.  Clean, which I really appreciate.

Pricing: More than I wish I had to pay, but seems to be the going rate in the city for good hair.  My only reason for giving it 4 stars instead of 5, but hey, the stylists and owners have to make a living too, right?  I'd love to be able to get a cut & color for under $100 -- but that pricing just doesn't exist in this city, unless you want to get butchered or damaged hair, so I'll pay it. If I lived in LA or another large city, I'd pay a lot more than in Portland, that's for sure.

Stylist: Lindsey Avenetti.  If you tell her you want your hair a medium chocolate brown, its medium chocolate brown.  (not black like has happened to me in the past).  If you tell her you want subtle sunkissed highlights, you get subtle sunkissed highlights.  If you tell her you like your hair long & your bangs sideswept, guess what you get?  Yup, long hair & sideswept bangs.

Nothing is worse than "hair surprises" and Lindsey is a good listener who does just as you ask.   She's nice, professional, and does a fantastic cut & color: with no surprises.

She did my complementary bang trim in a just a few minutes between appointments and it was perfect.

My personal gauge of a good cut & color is not only how my hair looks when I leave the salon, but how it looks 2 months later.  Is my color still shiny? Is my hair cut still behaving?  I can usually tell when it's time to go back because my hair no longer styles easily at about the 9 week mark, but after 10 weeks, I still had well behaved hair.

I like Grace Hair Salon, its a great salon and I see a lot of really nice hair leaving from other stylists as well.  I'm pretty sure you can't go wrong at this salon.

I really appreciated that the business owner contacts you when you're less then thrilled with your outcome, to come back in and have it fixed free of charge.

I was paired with Jodi. We talked about my problem, and how to fix it, and I immediately felt at ease.

I'm happy to report she 100% fixed the mistake, and I couldn't have been any happier with the result!

I'll update my review and hopefully give it 5 stars when I book my "real" appointment for the whole color and hair cut works in a few weeks!

I'll be the first to admit that I'm not a particularly loyal client when it comes to hairdressers.  I'll come in, get my hair cut...and then cut it myself for the next year until I've messed it up so badly that I need someone to fix it again.

This was the case when I appeared on the front stoop of Grace's, and they graciously fit me in for an appointment the very next day with a wonderful girl (whose name escapes me) and she fixed me right up.  And even complimented my bang-cutting skills!  Overall, great haircut, great conversation and a great space.  I highly recommend.

Minus one star because it was kinda expensive - worth it, but still.

I had an excellent time at Grace today- Nathan was my stylist, and he did a great job.  The place has a fun and trendy ambiance.  I was greeted with smiles, and enjoyed a glass of wine as I was pampered.  I came out loving my hair.  The price was very reasonable.  A wonderful experience.

    I'll definitely be back!

I have had enough bad haircuts in my life to be completely neurotic about finding a new salon, but it had to be done, and after reading a bunch of Yelp reviews that gave Grace the thumbs up, I held my breath and made the appointment.

I asked for Lindsay, (who other folks with long hair have said good things about and was able to get in within a few days.) She took everything I asked for in and gave me exactly the hair cut I asked for. I now have long hair with some  gentle layers that is just sexy enough. She also managed to be very friendly without that forced chitchat that can make a client feel like she is being interviewed. $50 seemed very reasonable for her level of expertise. Bravo- I will be back.

I initially reviewed Grace and Yelped about my "Bleh" experience there.  But after communicating with the owner, I realized that my words might have been a little harsh and I was partially to blame for my bad hair day there because I kept yammering away about other things and not focusing on the task at hand: my hair cut and color enhancements.  Next time I need to stop talking about celebrity gossip with my stylist and take over responsibility of my hair future.

I read all about how great Grace was on Yelp and decided to go since it got so many rave reviews.  I was disappointed in the end result.  Throughout the experience, I felt more like I was at the dentist having to get my tooth filled rather than getting my hair done.  Next time I need to open my mouth or else pay the price in being disappointed with the results.  I did not open my mouth, other than to be tentative the whole time about the cut and color.

Here is what went wrong and what I could have done differently to remedy the situation:

First, I asked for scattered highlights so the grow out wouldn't be so bad.  Did I get that?  Nope, just your standard highlights. I should have verified that the scattered highlights were being used rather than make assumptions.

Second, I asked to remove some of the red/orange that was coming out since I like to swim on occasion and I occasionally get in the sun.  Did I get that?  Nope, just s'more red/orange highlights.  When I saw the color, it looked orange, but I thought that maybe I was seeing things, maybe it would be better in a different light and maybe I wasn't used to it.  I should have demanded right then and there that it be redone to not look orange (or at least ask for help in getting it less orange).

Third, I said I didn't like thinning scissors on my rock star hair.  Did they refrain from using those?  Nope, used 'em.  My former stylists never used those funky thinning scissors since the grow-out turns out looking like lampshade head.  I even asked if this was normal and expressed concern that I didn't like the look of those scissors, and my stylist reassured me that it was what everyone used.  I need to find someone who isn't like everyone since my hair most certainly isn't like everyone else (I have an enormous amount of hair but it is baby fine in parts and swirly curly). I should have taken more control of the situation and stopped my stylist from using them.  I thought (incorrectly) that I was wrong in not wanting her to use them.  I must follow my gut instincts next time rather than watch as clumps of hair get "thinned" out of my mop.

Fourth, when I got home later that day, my head hurt... actually, my scalp hurt.  I tried to figure out why it felt like my head was burnt to a crisp ... when I was sitting under the steamer while my color enhancements were setting in, I think it got way too hot.  I didn't really feel it so much when I sat under the steamer cooking, but frogs never realize they are getting cooked until just before they are ready to be eaten.  If you feel at all uncomfortable under those steamers, get out from under there or ask them to turn down the heat.

I probably will not go back there again based on my personal experience, however, I think that they really want you to be happy.  Don't decide to leave them in the cold based on my review.  Consider my review helpful information of what not to do wherever your head-o-hair takes you.   I originally gave this salon a 2 based on my experience there. However, because of the admirable customer service on their part to follow up with me about my experience and attempt to remedy it, I have bumped Grace up to a 3.

I made an appointment to get a weave and bang trim done last week and had to change it two days before the appointment due to work. They were able to get me in with Trish the very next day. AWESOME! The woman on the phone was super nice.

On the day of my appointment I decided to change my mind and get just some chunky highlights in the front with a bang trim. Trish was soooo knowledgeable about what would look good and how to go about it. She explained everything she was doing in extreme detail which I really appreciated since I have some experience with hair. She was a great stylist to talk to as well. She asked questions and listened and responded. Which seems so simple but some stylists just don't do this. When you have a lot of hair like I do you need to be able to talk to your stylist.

The colors she chose and the choices she made in color placement were fantastic. The bang trim also went swimmingly. Not only did she have ideas for the current look, but we planned out the future look as well. The total price was also a very nice surprise. I usually end up paying $40 more than I did with tip. I will definitely be seeing Trish for the rest of my stay here in Portland.

On a side note, the owner and genius Mr. Grace came up with the products they use there and they are fantastic! How cool is that????
