Governor's Mansion, CA State Historic Park
4 reviews for Governor's Mansion, CA State Historic Park
We went to Sacramento to do the 10th Annual Sacramento Museum Day. It was GREAT. They had a list of 26 places open FREE on Sat. Feb 2, 2008. It's an annual event so check it out next yr if you missed it.
The FREE shuttle was picking up people from the Calif. Museum and there was FREE parking that day in the lot across the street.
The shuttle we took was Route #3 and the Governor's Mansion was the 1st stop. It's a very popular place to visit and we need to support it since Governor Schwarzenegger is threatening to Close this park!!
So we were the 3rd group to go, they first brought us to the gift shop where we looked around and waited until we could go into the mansion.
The mansion had lots of volunteers in period costumes to tell us what each of the rooms were. I liked it all. Really nicely decorated & furnished.
I'll need to go back, pay, & get a full, proper tour. The outside was in scaffolding so not that nice, hope they finished by next yr.
Separate bathrooms available around the backside of the mansion.
Mansion Admission:
Adults $4
Youth $2 (ages 6 to 17)
Children Free (5 and under)

This is a great little historic gem of California history. Tucked away in the middle of tree lined streets of Sacramento you may drive past it and not realize what it is... at least that happened to me for many years. I no longer live in the region and was up visiting family when we decided to visit the Governor's Mansion. I was pleasantly surprised. It has kept up well and the tour is very informative and personal I might add. We went on a weekday afternoon and were the only 2 on the tour. At 4 bucks a person it's a steal for that kind of attention. If you're looking for some historic fun in your backyard, check this place out.
We took this tour when we were living in Sacramento. I had forgotten about the aqua colors and chrome in the large kitchen, which Sarah S. described. It was pretty cool and retro looking. I was surprised to learn on the tour that Ronnie and Nancy Reagan never lived in the mansion. All in all, a good tour. A word of warning, though. If your kids are under the age of six, it might be better to leave them with a sitter, or wait until they get a little older. UNLESS, of course, your kids are not like ours, and are perfectly obedient, like the dogs are on that show where the guy teaches them whose boss. Either that, or you slip them some "baby valium" beforehand! A shot of whiskey might work, too!

I do so love the Governor's Mansion! Went there on a field trip when I was a little kiddie, and keep going back. It looks like a white gingerbread house, right in the middle of what used to be a crackhead neighborhood--which explains why that snooty Nancy Reagan refused to live there. It is also reportedly haunted. The last time I was there, they were still refurbishing the 3rd floor where Pat Brown's personal office was, and I look forward to seeing it. The Brown's were the last family to live there in the 60's, and the kitchen still retains the beautiful aqua paint and chrome of the era. Sweet. They also have fun tours during Halloween and Xmas. It's fun! Well, for me anyway.
