There's something about those plastic palm trees and sand volleyball across the Manhattan skyline that really gets me going.  I must end every trip to Governor's Island over on the beach bar.  It's also cheaper beer than you'd get in Manhattan and it's so relaxing I could sit out there all day!

As far as concerts go this is my favorite venue in NYC, actually my favorite venue.  I've gone to 3-4 concerts here now and all of them have been a great experience, the only problem is getting back off at the end.  There's always this mad mob rush to the ferries which can only hold so many people and who wants to leave early and miss the encore?

Just don't get too drunk and be patient and you'll make it off eventually.  There's a whole lot of stuff going on there these days so I recommend just taking a weekend day and heading down there, you can catch the ferry down at South street seaport or my fav in Brooklyn.  There are art shows, history spots with the history of governor's island which is very interesting and of course my fav spot to hang the beach bar.  You can also rent bikes and ride around the island or bring your own bike there for a nice place to ride with no cars!!!

The love and I rode our bikes down to Pier 6, and hopped on the ferry. We spent part of our day, riding around Governor's Island and laying in the grass or watching the boats on the water. There were also some cool art installations around the island to check out.
And it's eerie-in-the-best-way to roam amongst the abandoned buildings. We spotted a seagull nursing her baby next to the fire station and got to peek inside the greenhouse. This island has so much potential.
However, the company they've contracted to sell drinks and food has jacked-up prices and really low quality food, by what we could see. So glad we brought our own snacks.
There's still a lot left to be desired in terms of what you can do once you're through with bikes and picnics (shop the Etsy store? No, thanks.) but I look forward to see how the island develops over the next few years.

Are you tired of the craziness of the city? All the people who run to get the train. Disregarding your presence and you end up getting knocked down on the dirty floor? Think no more... You need an escape, a getaway, but you look in your wallet and you see nothing.... FEAR NOT! Governor's Island is here to save the day...

This place is REALLY PEACEFUL and RELAXING. If you want to get away from it all without leaving NYC. This is definitely the place to go to. It only takes a few minutes to get here using the ferry from Downtown Manhattan or Downtown Brooklyn. You can come here with your bike and ride all day. Don't have a bike? They have cheap or sometimes FREE rentals.

You look at Governors Island from the city all the time. How about you change the view and look at the city from the Island. You see things that you haven't seen before. G.I. is known for hosting lots of yearly events with it's large amounts of open space.

If you want a place to layout and tan. Have a nice picnic while enjoying the awesome weather or even do some photography. Governors Island is the place to go!

Remember to check the official website,  http://govisland.com/h...

Here you will find the calendar of events, ferry schedules and information about Governors Island.

Yes, we've all read that it's just a 7-minute ferry ride to this uninhabited paradise, but I'll have to play the contrarian and point out a few bits of unpleasantness.

Picnic Point is an awful place for a picnic. It's a long trudge past fenced-in, abandoned housing to . . . to what? Some patches of grass (covered in bits of styrofoam and other trash), about half a dozen picnic tables, and very few trees. Where are the damn hammocks? I was promised hammocks! Picnic Point's name felt like a cosmic joke. Sure, there's great views of the Statue of Liberty, but views do not a picnic make.

The rental-bike system works well and is free for the first hour on Fridays. (GI is a great place to teach someone to ride a bike, as it's flat, with hidden little streets to practice on.) However, be careful of the loaner helmets, as I have good reason to believe that children may come home with a headful of little critters as a result of wearing them. Bring you own, or do without.

Although GI shows a great commitment to public art, the execution can be flawed. The Mark di Suvero sculptures feel positively Stalinist in the approachability department. Children were yelled at for attempting to climb what looked like a pile of giant sandbags, but which turned out to be art. (Reading signage is not their strong point; who knew?) The much-touted miniature golf is more like an arty *idea* of miniature golf. Only a few kids were playing a desultory round.

This is not to denigrate how delightful it can be to spend some free time here. I've enjoyed many hours biking around and checking out the wonderful old houses, where you can pretend to be living in a different century. And I admit that my knowledge of art begins and ends with the Renaissance, so I'm a barbarian when it comes to Modern stuff. But forewarned is forearmed.

I'll start with the standard tourist information you can find in just about any other review here-- free ferry, free admission (thanks taxpayers!), yoga biking, walking, amazing views of the Statue of Liberty and downtown Manhattan and a water taxi beach make up just some of the attractions you can find at Governor's Island. Open from May until October, you can easily spend a half day here lounging around, picnicking and enjoying this retreat from urban living.

However, as a history buff, I came back seriously underwhelmed. I learned far more about the Island online at the NPS site than while I was actually there!

Maybe I failed to find the right building that contained information about the island's history. Perhaps I was looking in all the wrong directions for just a few historical clues about Fort Jay and Castle Williams. If so then I'll gladly bump the review up to 4 stars.

Another disappointment was access to probably the best part of the Island, the Picnic Point section. By 5pm the gate was ready to close and, well, better luck next time. 5pm? At least keep this section open until dusk.

Despite the above criticism, I do like Governor's Island and will gladly return. There's much potential here for entertainment, education and overall enjoyment. One of the most eerie experiences was walking through the Nolan Park area and taking a self-guided tour through a very large abandoned house. You'll likely hear children ringing a bell in this section as well so be prepared.

Walking around an island leads to hunger so we returned to the Water Taxi Beach area where you'll find food and drink. During this particular weekend, a blues/brews/bbq theme was in full swing and I thoroughly enjoyed my bratwurst cooked in beer (and grilled corn!).
Throughout the island you'll find vending machines, of which one owes me a dollar after refusing to dispense the coveted granola bar.

Transit to and from the Island was smooth. While standing in the rain waiting for the ferry to board, I couldn't help but think of the remake of "War of the Worlds" where crowds gather for an interrupted by aliens boat ride. Pigeons are almost as annoying.

There's something about taking the ferry to Governor's Island that makes it feel like you didn't just go to the park, you went on a getaway.

It's always a lovely place to bring a picnic, or rent a bike (you can of course, also bring your own bike, but the rentals are quite reasonably priced). There are plenty of quiet lawns to spread out a blanket, place to sit by the water, and colonial-style military buildings to look at.

There's usually some kind of art to see, and throughout the summer there are all kinds of events going on, from film festivals to historical re-creation, to art shows, to punk concerts and house DJs.

They keep threatening to "develop" this valuable piece of property - but for now, it's one of the things that makes living in NYC pretty damn cool.

Governor's Island is a great get away for the a few hours or the day on the weekend. With free ferry rides, free bike rentals on fridays, and lots of places to spread blankets or sheets to picnic.

You get gorgeous views of the Statue of Liberty, downtown Manhattan and Jersey City from edges of the Island.

And when you get bored there is a ton of history to catch up on about an island that is often mistaken for Ellis Island by the untrained explorer.

    A free ferry.

The best views of the statue of liberty, Jersey City and Manhattan.

    Hammocks.

    A cool sea breeze.

    Interesting oldish buildings.

Perfect for out of town guests who don't want to fork out for the whole statue tour and harbour boat cruise!

Also perfect for a cycle, picnic and snooze in the sunshine.  Can you say romance, people?

There is a lot of fun to be had on this lovely spot of green but do not come to the island hungry, or at least bring a snack. Every event I've ever been to has had unreasonably long food lines, and the standard canteen fare available from the Water Taxi Beach bar is overpriced and average.
If you're planning to come simply for a day outdoors, I suggest you check the calendar of events first, as on some summer weekends the island is taken over by punk rockers or Jazz Age picnickers or the Jersey Shore.

This place is amazing.  It's a vital lifetap for anyone who live in the crazy concrete jungle.

Hop on the free ferry that runs every half hour from Battery Park. In 10 mins, you would not believe a place like this exists mere half a mile from Manhattan.

It's a HUGE 172-acre park full of open fields, rolling hills, bike paths, and historic monuments.  It's a perfect spot to do NOTHING and unwind.  Plan a picnic here and nap all day.  Or enjoy festivals and events held on the main field.

This is a dream-come-true alternative to Central Park with a fraction of tourists.

You will also be awarded with a breath taking view of the NY downtown from this island.

I really do enjoy this nice little oasis away from the city.  It made for a nice romantic day with my boyfriend.  I'm a big fan of the bench swings!  Nice views, fun activities, relaxed vibe, with some interesting historical tid bits thrown in here and there.
Warning, though, pack your own food.  We got food from the Ferry Beach and, in my opinion, was over priced for the quality.

    Wow
I cant believe we had so much fun at Governors Island , at the Water Day Festival, it was so educational, we learned so much about recycling and that our harbor still contain crustacean, with the way, the water is kept in NYC, its amazing.
I never, knew how peaceful, it is out there, I do believe i will be coming back  at the next yelp event or just for fun, to rent a bike and just ride the  whole island.
I do like the family bike.
Also the Boss had fun just running around the field, I cant say I didn't also.LOL
Dee, just loved walking around and learning about the island history. it's just fun for the whole family.

Seriously, if you are a New Yorker, you should know better!  If you're planning a visit to Governor's Island, by all means, plan on getting to the 10am ferry, ideally with a bike in tow. My husband and I had a wonderful visit, but when we returned around 1pm, all I can say is that is was mass of humanity.  Coming from the suburbs?  There's an easy access IKON parking nearby (check out http://www.bestparking... - where for $19 we could park for the entire day if you enter before 10am.)

Overall, what a lovely day, with beautiful views of the city, incredible art on display, historic buildings and lots of snacking/drinking opportunities.  If you don't have a bike, be sure to rent one.  It's the best way to see the island.  When we left the ferry, we rode our bikes to a nearby (for the A/C, it was hot), but there's an alley with tons of pub-style restaurants and bars (e.g. The Dubliner) we'll try next time.  And there will definitely be a next time - Governors Island has a calendar of events, so it's worth following them on FB.

    This place exists? Sweet.

I came here on a Friday hoping to beat the weekend traffic, but I chose the wrong day. There were so many school kids out on field trips that I waited a lot of the time for bikes/ferry. If you get caught in the bike line, there's a line for adults and a separate one for the kids. Don't get caught in the kids' line.

Other than the wait, this place is quaint. I went on a bike ride which is free on Fridays. The view of Manhattan is epic. And Governor's Island has charm. I so want to go to their Jazz Party.

Beautiful!  Only open during the summer season, so you need to take advantage of this place when you can!  The ferry there and back is free, and they give out free bikes on Fridays.  What a great way to spend a day!

You can check out some buildings with some cool rooms (one had a huge statue made out of colorful tissue paper).  You can make yourself a picnic and look out into the waters.  You can also get some joint bikes if you'd rather have your S.O. do all the pedaling for you *ahem.*  Afterwards, treat yourself to some Mister Softee.  Or not, since the soft serve was just average.  But it works for hot 'n sunny days!

Great place for a mini and close escape.  You can cover the whole island on foot and by bike.  I'll definitely be back when the weather gets warmer!

For most of my life, Governors Island was off-limits; a cool, serene oasis so close but so far as it was run by the military - OK, the coast guard.  In 2005, the Federal Government gave it to NYC for $1 and opened a small part to visitors on the weekend; just along the western promenade - beautiful.
Fast forward to today and my wife wanted to see what others were raving about.  We took the car to the Brooklyn ferry and the five minute trip to another world.  Sure it was beautiful as I had remembered, but now most of the island was opened up, there was public art everywhere and lots of interactive art for adults and children.  A little walking, a picnic, walking to open air music, a little cafe, ice cream, more open art and a nice walk back to the landing and our four hours family adventure was wonderful.  We are already planning our return and maybe take advantage of the bike rentals, areas we didn't see and relaxing in the middle of NY harbor.  Excellent.

Really?  Only four and a half stars overall?  I seriously hope this rating changes by the time I'm done with this review.

PEOPLE, THIS PLACE IS THE AWESOME!  yes... THE AWESOME!

Okay, maybe my opinion is skewed because I came here for Meatopia, and had the time of life gorging myself on beefs and porks, while elbow deep in BBQ sauce..

So, meatopia aside, this place is still pretty freaking awesome.  The history is that it used to be the headquarters for the united states army, and then became a base for the coast guard or something like that.  And now it's a 172 acres of instant getaway from city life.

The grass is greener, the air is fresher, the trees outnumber the people, and the governors island ferry is FREE!  Seriously, what is there not to like?!   Additionally, there are various art sculptures scattered throughout the island! ... It's almost like playing a game of myst (okay, not quite, but hands up if you know what I'm talking about..)

OH AND... you can rent bikes there!  ...Or if you're like me and don't know the first thing about riding a bike.... there are small and large "quadcycles" for you and a few friends.

Governor's Island is an under-appreciate but up-and-coming island in New York City with lots for everyone. I came for Figment 2010, where artists from all over the city could come and display and perform their art. What was neat was that one could walk all over the Island and see random art pieces but also neat historic buildings, beautiful trees, and great views of Manhattan and Brooklyn.

I wish there were more food and drink options on the Island, but coming here is a perfect opportunity to bring a picnic and escape the crazy city for the day.

Hopped on the G, took a bus down Atlantic (very friendly bus driver on that route), rode a free ferry, and stepped foot on the glory that is Governor's Island.

The first time I went, I volunteered for FIGMENT NYC, who btw sponsers free mini-golf Sat/Sun. Each hole is made by a different artist and each hole is fairly challenging. The second time I went was for pure relaxing fun. Found a super sweet spot overlooking downtown NYC and Statue of Liberty. Boats sail by as bikers pedal by. I really could not have asked for a more surreal spot. Broke out the travel Scrabble and witnessed a little rom-com action. Taking the Manhattan ferry back, there was a concert going on at Water Taxi beach...always something to do on this little piece of heaven.

A trek, but worth it. Go. You won't regret it.

** Note to parents: the playground at Pier 6 where the BK ferry picks up is a kids' dream come true. If I were just 2 or 3 feet shorter, I'd be all up in that mofo. (I'm 5')

Take the free ferry from Wall Street and enjoy a chill hangout/picnic/bike ride with friends and family! I really enjoy the tranquil of the Island.

They have free events like concerts, BBQ and more in the summer but it can get pretty crowded and overwhelming. So if you do come here for special events, I recommend coming here early so you don't end up waiting in line forever.

I love Governors Island. I am sitting here trying to think of a way to portray how much I enjoy coming here, but I am at a loss.

You take a ferry to get here (I have only taken the BK ferry, and there has never been a really long line or a long wait). The boat ride is fast (less than 5 minutes), free, and fun. You can bring your bike on the boat!  Actually, I think you can bring basically whatever you want on the boat (within common sense reasoning.)

I  have come here for events (polo, concerts, beer fests), picnics, bike riding, and ice cream. There are beautiful old houses, monuments, green space, happy people, art installations, etc. I just really like it.

I went here for my first time over the weekend.  I've never been to Governors Island, really didn't have a reason to.
It's a bit of a trek from Queens but the ferry is free.  The line is pretty short and I think there's one every 30 mins.  I went for the Yelp Summercamp Yoga.
While riding on the ferry eating my Bonchon chicken (yeah so what? I know the onlookers were jealous).  I studied the map of the island.  It's in the shape of an ice cream cone (does anyone else notice this or is it just me)?  It seemed small and I had it down pact and wouldn't get lost.
Sure enough I get off the ferry and I'm lost.  This island is huge.  I asked for directions 3x and my iPhone didn't really help.  Maybe one could bike around it quickly but try walking.  It was a lovely day and I plan to return on more lovely days to bike.

PS - There is food and plenty of bathrooms, port o potties and regular bathrooms.

Calling all bike gangs.  Who is down to ride through Gov'nah's island!

I've never attended any Oktoberfest festivities before so I was stoked.  Being in the middle of Fall, the free ferry ride over to the island was wonderful. The weather was nice, and the view was breathtaking.

Once on the island, the area was nice. If you ever come in NY during Oktoberfest, you should check it out. The food and beer served were great!  Only problem was the super long line wait. Or not, you should just check out the island if you've never been, it's a cool place.

Opening very soon (June 5) for the summer season, this review is perfectly timed with my excitement about my many weekends to come. Transit there is exclusively by boat and doesn't take more than 5 minutes from Manhattan to GI. The terminal is a bit tricky to find with all the construction near the Staten Island Ferry right now but it's on the *left* side, not the right side of the SI Ferry Building.

So now that you have braved the free ferry and have touched down on land, what next? Well, explore of course! The island used to be an army base and only recently was purchased back by the city so a lot more development is in the works. For now though, enjoy sprawling parade grounds, green grass lawns surrounding by long abandoned barracks. There's even an old prison that's sure to give you the willy nillies. If that's too "historical" for you then sink your toes into the sand at Water Taxi Beach complete with a full bar and live DJs on the weekends.

On a bright summer day, when the temperature is stifling, there's always guaranteed to be a breeze on GI since it's smack in the middle of the water with a perfect view of the Statue of Liberty. This summer I'm planning to take my (yet to be purchased) bike and tour the different events, picnics, concerts, mini-golf and frisbee-tossing with other in-the-know New Yorkers. They have a bike rental station on the island as well if you don't own your own.

It manages to slip by the tourists and retain a relaxing serenity, even on the busiest of days. Best to avoid the Central Park clusterflip this summer and go visit the guv'ner's instead!

    A. Not alot of people to annoy me when I'm getting my tan on...observation: my friend and I were the only ones showing skin on this whole island (she had a bikini on, and me in camo shorts)
    B. Tons of port-a-johns, some hidden (yeah, if you need more privacy)
    C. Enough trees for a shady retreat from the sun and it can be breezy, which was a relief
    D. Food trucks if you forgot to bring eats/drinks
    E. Enough real estate to walk around and check out the historical value of the island and buildings
    F. Bikes flying around on the streets were fun to watch smash into each other
    G. The ferry was a short ride and even though the douches with bikes ran over my kicks, it was bearable
    H. My friend and I had to bail once we saw the streaming crews of d-bags getting loudly pyched for the brew fest, coming off of the ferries

I will hit again for the concerts.

Wow! I came to visit the island yesterday with friends and have a blast! Food, fun, sun, biking, fishing, sightseeing, etc. This is the best staycation location this summer (so far)...its literally a five minute ferry ride from the Battery Park pier but feels like an oasis that's far away from the city life craziness. This is a must for families and couples to visit during the summer especially since the ferry rides are free!

Governors Island is a great escape from the city with zero hassle, planning, or expense required.

I have been to Gov Island twice.  The first time was for a concert which was a lot of fun (great music and great views of Manhattan?  Check!).  Unfortunately leaving the show at the end of the night was somewhat chaotic--we had to battle the crowds of hipsters pushing their way to the front, the entire stampede ending up on a too-close-for-comfort vehicle ferry (not the typical passenger ferries that usually go to the island).

The second time was the 4th of July.  In the city on July 4th--what to do?  A friend informed me that She + Him was playing on Gov Island, so we quickly re-assembled ourselves into a picnic making machine and headed out toward South Ferry.

If you didn't already gather this from other reviews, the ferry is FREE.

There were a lot of people on Gov Island that day but it didn't feel crowded.  Free bike rentals and Mister Softee trucks added to the lazy summer vibe.  We picked a spot on the lawn to picnic and drink in the sunshine.  Frisbee, card games, and lots of eating/drinking ensued.  So relaxing.

    A few tips:

    1)  Bring a proper picnic blanket.  The grass is mostly dead and very dry and prickly.  I guess with no running water it's difficult to maintain the grass.

    2)  Bring food and drink.  There's a snack bar and the previously-mentioned Mister Softee truck, but you'll be glad to have real nourishment.  And water!!

    3)  Speaking of drinks, alcohol isn't allowed on the island and there is a security check at the ferry.  For what its worth, once on the island there were people with open containers everywhere.

    4)  Pass on the beach.  I guess in terms of time and expense its fine.  On the other hand, it brings to mind the old saying "you get what you pay for"...and Gov Island is free.  If you are looking for proper beach, go to LI or the Shore or the Caribbean.  Not here.

    5)  Live in Brooklyn?  There's a new ferry service to Brooklyn Bridge Park!  Best of all, there are dippin dots on the Island near the Brooklyn ferry.  If that's not reason enough to move to BK, I don't know what is.

Governor' Island is one of the few free things to do in NYC. If you're looking for lots of shops, eateries, etc., Governors Island is not the place for you. However, if you are looking for a nice place to chill w/ a little exploring thrown in, then this is a great spot. I skipped Water Taxi Beach altogether. because there are lots of places to get drinks in the city and the venue looked more cheesy than inviting.

Would'v loved to walk through Castle Williams, but it was under construction. It didn't look like much but I'm a sucker for anything with "Castle" in the name.

After walking down Craig Rd, we reached our first stop, Picnic Point. We brought a small towel to sit on and enjoyed spending a couple of hours here chatting and then running on the grass playing with the ball and frisbee we brought. It was much nicer to do this here instead of in Central Park because it was MUCH less crowded.

There aren't a lot of food options on Governors Island, but we did enjoy a snack at Blue Marble Ice Cream - slightly melted, but delicious.

We then walked all the way around to the other side of the island, popping in and out of the historic buildings. My favorite was the Commanding Officers House, which had some beautiful decorations, and Fort Jay, where there were some rocking chairs set up for you to relax in on the patio. There was also some trapeze classes going on, which was fun to watch, but I'm not sure I would ever do it myself.

All in all, this was a perfectly relaxing afternoon. Just be sure to wear lots of sunscreen!

I've been wanting (but not wanting enough I guess) to go here for years. I finally did it this weekend.

There are now free ferries from both Manhattan and Brooklyn. The Manhattan ferry runs Friday - Sunday from a ferry building right next to the Staten Island Ferry. The Brooklyn Ferry runs Saturday & Sunday from Pier 6 of Brooklyn Bridge Park. Note that is at the foot of Atlantic Avenue and not really near the bridge.

I took the Brooklyn ferry. The wait is only a few minutes since it runs nonstop all day and the ride is only a little over two minutes. On the way there my ferry got stuck in an airport-style holding pattern and we had to wait a couple more minutes before a dock became available.

The island is pretty big and you have access to about half of it, including the entire circumferential drive. The northeast section of the island is a Revolutionary War-era historic area and also has a Water Taxi Beach, where you can get grilled food and $6 beer.

The rest of the island, southwest of the appropriately-named "Division Road" is, for now, a decaying Coast Guard Base (it closed in 1996). It's closed off but you get some cool views into it as you go along the circumferential drive. Highlights right now include huge abandoned housing complexes and a mini strip mall with signs still intact.

The city is in the process of turning more of the southwestern half into parkland. Recently it tore down one coast guard village and turned it into a picnic area.

I recommend taking a walk around the whole island - great views and the cool abandoned stuff I mentioned above. Then walk around the historic part and check that out.

You can bring your bike or rent one from New York Bike and Roll. Currently it's $15 for two hours. Walking doesn't take too long either. It's about 45 minutes roundtrip if you stop and look at things a few times.

There are also two tram services that'll drive you around the island for free. One exclusively serves the historic area while the other speeds you down to the new picnic area.

Although there are technically no cars on the island, there are some service vehicles including quite a few golf cart-type vehicles for the staff. During my visit these were driven quite recklessly, especially on the narrow paths of the historic area. Many are nearly silent, so keep an eye open when crossing from one side of a path to another!

Besides Water Taxi Beach, there are a few additional food options around the whole island. Restrooms are also scattered about. Check out http://www.govisland.com for the latest detailed map.

This is a great little island and I'm looking forward to it being opened up more and more.

Free Bike Fridays during the summer! But get there by 3:30 PM! Sadly I was a few minutes late so I wasn't able to rent a bike but I still enjoyed my time walking around the island. It was so peaceful and well worth the short ferry ride over from lower Manhattan.

What would you do there you ask?
    1) Freely walk the old homes and buildings that are now abandoned and slightly creepy.
    2) Lay out on one of the lawns, have a picnic and gaze out over lower Manhattan or the Statue of Liberty. (There are also places were you can purchase food so don't fret if you didn't pack a picnic basket.)
    3) Ride bikes, walk or blade around the island. You can rent bikes there or bring your own.

I do think this is one of the places New Yorkers sleep on but I'd highly recommend it on a lazy Saturday or Sunday afternoon. It's just a really random, special place.

From Governors Island's site: "On The Beach there are picnic tables and soft, glorious sand on which to sit if the mood hits you." - LIES!! I might as well have been walking on hot, abrasive coals to get to the guards handing out wristbands for the concert.
"It's exfoliating my feet." - my friend, as she slowly gives in to delusional denials.

    Me -This isn't soft sand.
Friend -  That's because it's not real sand.
*whilst lying on the grass by the ferry landing* "This grass hurts." "That's because it's not real grass."
    Get the picture?

Unsurprisingly overpriced concession stands. The site states that outside food is not allowed on the island. Well some girl managed to smuggle on a foot long Subway! Props to her!

Surprisingly, no body of water to dip my feet in by the "beach"?? Lame!

The ferry ride over to the island is really short but going back to Manhattan, the concert ferry is smaller than the regular ferry and can only hold about 150 ... so security encloses people in barricades (nowhere near the ferry dock) until the next ferry arrives. They don't explain this to you. They just trap you in these barricade cages. Thank you, security, for your poor communication skills. It was pretty ridiculous, but I will say that the free concert was a nice experience and worth checking out.

Bear in mind, that this review comes from the mouth of a bona fide hater.

I should have known better, I really should have. When I heard that there was going to be a free She & Him concert on the 4th of July at Governors Island, I thought...EUREKA! I've been dying to see the band play (although I've seen M.Ward countless times, I've never seen him play as She & Him). I had also been dying to trek out to Govenors Island. Unfortunately, I got a late start to the day, and when I finally made it to South Ferry...the line was 45 minutes long. As soon as I made it to the ferry, there were announcements that the show was sold out. Perfect.

There's no where to swim on Govenors Island. On a 90-something degree day, this is a problem. It's too hot to meander around this place with the ridiculously hot sun beating down on you. And, I'm sorry...this place just is NOT worth 5 stars. I was excited to play mini-golf and when I finally made my way over to the course all I could think was..."are you KIDDING me?" Basically, the mini golf course looks like something out of a junk yard. In fact, you'd probably have more fun playing mini golf in a junk yard. Come on. I also meandered over to the bike rentals...$15 (PLUS TAX) for two hours of bike use. Two dollars for water out of a refrigerator that the employee admitted was broken. No WONDER this place is called Governors Island -- they're definitely in the business of taking as much of your money as possible.

The best way to use this place is to take advantage of the fact that it's free. Bring as much water as possible, especially on a 90 degree day. Bring your own food, because there really aren't that many great options for grub. Bring your OWN bike if you have one. But DO NOT bring and booze or illegal treats to smoke, because your bags WILL be searched before you board the ferry.

I'll definitely go back..Definitely on an "off-weekend" and definitely not on a 90 degree day.

A little getaway from the City. It's open from Friday to Sunday and it's only a short ferry ride away--ALL FOR FREE. There's plenty to do here. From kayaking to biking to enjoying the exhibits/events. You can bring your own bike or rent one for $10/hr. The kayaking @ Pier 101 is free and is run by volunteers. And depending upon the weekend you visit, various events can be going on.

Food and drinks can be purchased on the island. You cannot bring alcohol onto the island (your bags get checked at the terminal) but you certainly can bring a blanket and food to make a picnic out of the afternoon you are there. Just chill, relax and enjoy the summer!

    Well hello Gov'nah....

A free ferry ride from south street seaport to an island that looks like Colonial Williamburg with views of Brooklyn, Jersey and the Financial District?  Yes please!

As fun as Central Park and McCarren Park can be, Governor's Island beats the pants off of them.  There are free bike rentals, art hanging in all of the historic buildings and tons of space to lay out, play frisbee, do gymnastics and frolic.  A group of rogue women fairies (literally....) came by our roosting area and sprinkled us with glittery fairy dust and cooed at us.  For reals - I can't even make these stories up.

There is a really cool fort in the center of the island that reminds me a lot of the fort in St. Augustine, FL.  Neat - and a cool place to sneak away and make out under the hot summer sun.  Umm...what?!

They check your bag for alcohol so be stealth with your smuggled booze.  I recommend making punches, premixed drinks, etc.  There are places to get food/bevs on the island too so don't freak out if you forget food.

    I am a lush.

I went to Governors Island last summer to rent bikes and go to the newly opened water taxi beach over there and then again last night for a concert and I just love it.

You get the feeling of escaping Manhattan without actually leaving it at all. There are free ferries and they run Friday - Sunday from the Battery Maritime Building right next to the Staten Island Ferry. (There is also a free ferry from Brooklyn i'm told) and it's an easy, painless ferry ride (takes just a few minutes).

The island is divided in half by a street called Division Road. The northeastern half is currently open to the public. The southwestern half, which contains the abandoned U.S. Coast Guard housing and service areas is still in redevelopment and its interior sections remain closed to the public. There is plenty to do in the NE half, you can rent a bike (free bike Fridays every Friday from June 11 - October 8), art exhibits, performances, artist-designed miniature golf, picnics, tours and much more. On the northeast section of the island a Water Taxi Beach, where you can get  food, beer and have a great view or the Manhattan skyline.

The show I went to last night was on Colonels' Row and was a great venue. Its a great place to just lay in the grass look at the stars and listen to the music.

I recommend going and I am looking forward to more summer shows, bike rides and beers.

Now that there is a considerable chill in the autumn air, I am already bemoaning the fact that I'll have to wait until May of next year to revisit the lovely, idyllic and tranquil Governors Island.  Of course, depending on what changes and additions they make to the island in the off-season, it might not be so tranquil and idyllic anymore.  I sincerely hope that they preserve the details that make Governors Island seem like a special getaway that only a select few know about.

The really cool thing about Governors Island is that it provides so many perfect picnic spots, whether you want a wide open grassy knoll, a view of the water, or a place that makes you feel like you're back on a college campus.  There are hammocks, forts, churches, beautiful houses, and thanks to the Water Taxi, a beach.  With so much variety of space, you really can't go wrong.  And if you bring a bike (or rent one from Bike & Roll - free on Fridays), you'll quickly be able to explore all the nooks and crannies of the small island.

You can even have an outdoor wedding there, as my fiancé and I once saw.  The reception was on a patch of grass overlooking the Statue of Liberty, and the couple made arrangements for all their guests to have a free bicycle so they could roam around the island on wheels.  We thought that was a very clever way to celebrate their nuptials in such a unique setting.

My hope is that Governors Island remains a place where you can feel like you're miles away from city life without actually going too far.  There are very few places in New York that I would describe as quaint and serene, but Governors Island is one of them, and I'm thankful for my proximity to it.
