Review from Mike L.
For my buddy's 30th birthday [dude, if you're reading this...you're old!], his wife decided to book a private Hayes Valley tour for the eight of us this past weekend. Besides it being a great idea on her part, the experience itself was pretty awesome as well. Needless to say it was fun trying small bites from each place, but our tour guide Nicole made it all that much better.
After meeting Nicole at the children's playground on Hayes, the group embarked onto the first of the five stops during the three hour tour. Since their site doesn't list the names of their destinations (and in case people want to be surprised with where they go), I won't mention any names either. If you really want to know, feel free to message me. Otherwise, I will say that it was a nice mix of places and that if you put them together, they just about covered each part of a real meal (appetizer, entree, side, dessert, and drink).
At each stop, and during the walks in between, Nicole was terrific at providing explanations of the different foods we were trying, a history of the businesses we visited, notes about other restaurants in the area, and random factoids and trivia about the neighborhood. So not only did we get to sample and try some good stuff, but we got to learn a number of things as well! And while it's true that there wasn't a great deal of walking involved...so? Personally, I'd be more concerned about the food, info, and experience, rather than how much walking we would do.
While I do wish we had made some additional stops just to try and learn more, I was certainly happy enough with what we got to (I actually missed the last stop since I had to leave early though). I would certainly be interested to see what their Gourmet Napa trip has to offer...now I just have to find a wife of my own to take me for my birthday! Or I guess I could just book it myself...that might be easier. -

My Husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our Asian Street Food Tour with Gourmet Walks in San Francisco. The tour started at the Japan Mall in Japantown and proceeded to the Filmore District and Pacific Heights. Although we had visited San Francisco before, we had never visited these neighborhoods. We liked them so much we went back that evening for dinner.
But, back to the tour. Our guide was very friendly and knowledgeable about the neighborhoods and all of the food vendors where we stopped. She even gave us some additional suggestions for after the tour if we were still hungry, which we were not. There were eight different stops. We sampled a number of japanese foods and also Korean, Thai and Vietnamese. (No, this tour did not go to Chinatown.) We also sampled two regional beverages. The food was mostly delicious and occasionally interesting but outside of my taste range. It was a good mix between sweet and savory. All of the samples were vegetarian and that item had a vegetarian option if you were interested. By the end of the tour, most of us could only taste the last sample because we were so full. (Do not eat before the tour!)
I would highly recommend this tour to people who like to see a slightly different side of San Francisco and enjoy sampling a variety of unusual (and some no so unusual) foods. We will definitely try another tour with Gourmet Walks in the future. -

Did this on New Year's eve and loved it! They take you to chocolate makers and chocolatiers that you normally wouldn't even think to stop at. And you really learn about different types, beans, origins, etc. Definitely a recommended tour to do. Especially if you love chocolate like I do!

Our office went on a chocolate tour for a holiday outing. It was great and we all really enjoyed it. Our guide, Elizabeth, was clearly a chocoholic and also very knowedgeable about the history and culture of chocolate - and had lots of great SF history tidbits to throw in as well. She was delightful company for our tour.
What could be better than spending 3 hours sampling delicious, artisanal chocooates?! Worth every penny. Also great to pull out your sample bag at home that night and enjoy the samples you were too full to eat on the tour:-) -

I took my partner on the tour for his 30th birthday and we both had a blast! The company was great, the food and drink were delicious, the weather was perfect, and the tour memorable! Thank you Gourmet Walks. . . . .

Where to begin. Lets start with Elizabeth. A true chocolate fanatic. Wonderful knowledge, wonderfully patient.
Start at the Ferry building, and wind your way through the city up market street, and finally up Sutter and ending up at Westfield Shopping Centre.
I got this tour as a gift, and as an SF native, it is just awesome to be able to explore the foodie paradise that the bay area has to offer. I loved all the chocolate, the dark, the milk, and even the white(not my favorite). I enjoyed the historical side notes, and appreciated Elizabeth's art and architecture gems of knowledge. She is passionate and infectious.
I recommend the tour to anyone and everyone. -

So apparently you are reading this review because you heard that this place offers a "chocolate tour", but you haven't booked it yet. I don't understand you.
Girl and I actually did the "ultra chocolate tour", which is like the regular chocolate tour except with more booze (wine pairings and chocolate martinis). The whole thing was fun, educational, and delicious. We got lots of chocolate, including some to take with us. It took the full 3 hours, and had some, but not too much, educational discussions. I don't recall our guides' names, but they were very nice, if lacking just a bit on volume. -

We booked a private Chocolate Gourmet Walking Tour based on the feedback posted, for our friend's 50th birthday celebration. We couldn't have been more pleased, our tour was fantastic (even in a light rain on Veteran's Day). Thanks to Andrea for making the date and time work for our party.
From the beginning with our very knowledgeable and enthusiastic tour guide, Elizabeth, we knew we were in for a treat. The seven unique chocolate stops we made along the tour route indulged us with many samples of unique and creative chocolates. In addition to learning all about chocolate, along the walking route, Elizabeth gave us tidbits about early San Francisco.
I can't wait to plan another trip to San Francisco to tryout the Hayes Valley tour.
Love San Francisco and love Gourmet Walks! -

What a great way to spend the afternoon! Did the chocolate walking tour last week and it was terrific. We met our guide, Elizabeth, near the Ferry Building and proceeded to make 7 stops - all wonderful and interesting and scrumptious. Elizabeth definitely knows her stuff and was informative, interesting and very enthusiastic. She clearly loves her work and shared so many great tidbits about the world of chocolate. Most of us in the group have lived in SF for a very long time but she had some surprises for us almost-natives. Best of all were the chocolates at every stop - too many to finish in one afternoon - they're so good I may not share!

I went on the Chocolate Tour this past Valentine's Day weekend and it was sooo much fun and worth every penny! The tour starts at the Ferry Building and ends at the Westfield Shopping Center and you get to visit 7 different chocolate shops along the way. No...you will not be going to Ghirardelli's or See's...I am talking fine chocolates. Each shop gives you 2-3 samples of chocolate so you will get your money's worth with just the samples. Plus, you also get a discount card to use toward your 1st chocolate purchase at those stores...how awesome is that?!
Our tour guide was Elizabeth and she really added to the experience. You can definitely tell she is very passionate about her job and loooves chocolate. I couldn't believe how fast the 3 hours flew by ~ what a fun and yummy tour! -

We went to Chocolate Tour on Valentine's day. I heard the weekend was packed (99 people, but 14 people max in each group), but on the valentine's day surprisingly nobody else booked beside us. It was so much fun that the three hours passed by very quick.
Our tour guide, Elizabeth, was fun and very knowledgeable about history of chocolate and San Francisco. This Embarcadero-Downtown walk reminded me how special it's to live in this city. It was educational and made me want to take my out-of-town friends and family to this tour. -

We just finished the Chocolate Tour with the wonderful tour guide Elizabeth. It was a very fun and educational tour. Getting to sample some of San Francisco's finest chocolates and getting in a nice walk so as to not feel like a glutton was the perfect way to spend a few hours. I can't wait to return to San Francisco to visit the shops on the tour to continue my chocolate education.

Not sure why all the other reviews are so strong. I went on the Hayes Valley Tour with my parents and we were not entirely impressed.
All seven stops on the tour were within a three block radius, which seems to defeat the purpose of a walking tour. Each location was extremely specialized and I found the food to be too focused on sweets. Between Miette for cupcakes, Paulette for macarons, and Christoper Elbow for chocolate, it was a bit too much.
If you're interested in exploring Hayes Valley, save the $60+ and explore by yourself. Definitely stop at Arlequin To Go for cheese & wine, which was the best stop on the Tour.Comment from Andrea N. of Gourmet Walks 2/14/2011

My mom, my sister & I took Gourmet Walk's Chocolate Tour this week in celebration of my mom's birthday. It was simple to book online. The price is $51 per person.
Our tour guide was Beth, who we met at the Justin Herman Plaza, across the street from the Ferry Building, where our first two stops were (Scharffen Berger & Recchiuti.) We were given samples to try on the tour, chocolates in little baggies (to eat now or later) & a discount card (10-20% off) for most of the chocolate shops visited on the tour.
From there, the stops were:
[fog city news] where they sell international magazines (like Vogue from every country it's printed in) & international chocolates
[manika] a jewelry shop on maiden lane w/ Alegio Chocolates, that almost look like jewelry, sold up front
[leonida's] in the crocker galleria for some hot chocolate. This was one of my favorite spots b/c you got to choose your free truffle
[teuscher] steps from the beginning of chinatown. Oprah made this shoppe popular by mentioning their champagne truffles on her "favorite things" show, which we were given a sample of
[cocoa bella] in the westfield mall. I thought this was the perfect ending point to out tour b/c there is a plethora of shopping & food options right in the mall.
We were given so many samples that it was pretty much impossible to eat it all within the 3-hour tour. Aside from decadent samples, we were given history lessons of chocolate & of San Francisco. The three of us enjoyed playing tourist in our own city for one day.Listed in: Purely San Francisco, I like candy..., Playing Tourist

We took the 'Gourmet on Hayes' tour on this past soaking wet Easter Sunday. Thank you, Avital, for renewing my faith in tours! This is a great tour for "anti-tour" people like me...a mix of trivia, history, culinary gossip, and a variety of local flavors.
We devoured cupcakes at Dellessio's, sipped tea & cleansed our palates with chevre-stuffed dates at Samovar, dipped the city's best fries into unbelievable sauces & replaced fish tacos (closed!) with a crepe at Frjtz, bought Sake at True Sake, tasted authentic macarons at Paulette's, sampled artisan cheeses at Arlequin, and topped it all off with a spiced rum cocktail at Smuggler's Cove! (Did I forget something???)
Yum. Go book your tour right now...bon appetit!Listed in: San Francisco for COOL…

I went on a Gourmet Chocolate Walking Tour this weekend, and it was such a nice time! There was a small group of us (5), for our 3-hour tour, we went to the Ferry Building, up to Fog City News on Market then finished up in Union Square.
Andrea did a great job (for only her 2nd tour), giving us interesting chocolate information, chatting us up and offering up some great SF history, without it seeming forced. It was like she was a friend hosting us around the city. At each place, we got samples and a few treats to take home. Some of us in the group probably ate 8 truffles that day (ugh), but I saved mine away like a smart little squirrel and I can't wait for them to sustain me thru the week.
This is an great thing to do as a local or as a visitor. I went to places that I've walked by a zillion times, but have never been in. And seriously, who can say no to chocolate?
Andera is offering a great $17 rate thru Sept, where she gives you a great tour, but asks for some feedback as well. -

This is a great idea that turned into a great reality.
I've never been a big fan of candy or the chocolate bar. Throw brownies or a chocolate cake in front of me and i will devour it.
This tour has enlightened me to the fact that there is chocolate worth eating out there and not just sugar substances turned into chocolate bars.
There are many kinds and many flavors and you learn all about the processes and ingredients that goes into making the chocolate.
The tour starts at the Ferry building and heads up Market Street. You vist choclatiers chocolate sellers and are given free samples along the way. If you can't handle eating all the free samples in one dau you can take them home which is a great option. There is such a thing as too much chocolate.
I was fortunate enough to take the wine and chocolate tour. I don't find it necessary to go into detail about the greatness of this.
This is a tour worth the money and effort! -

One of my good friends LOVES chocolate, so when I stumbled across the chocolate tour on Yelp, I knew that I had found her the perfect birthday present. I wanted this to be something for us to do together, the only problem though, was that I wasn't not too fond of chocolate (I know, crazy right?). But I sucked it up because I knew that my friend would really like it. Little did I know that the only reason I didn't really like chocolate, was because I've been having the wrong kinds all my life. Oh Gourmet Walks, how you have opened my eyes.
The tour starts out at Justin Herman Plaza with a little history on chocolate and how its made. Then everyone heads over to the Ferry Building where the tastings begin. You get to try a couple pieces of chocolate at each place and the best part is that at most of the places, you get to pick what you try. After you finish up at the Ferry Building, the tour takes you to Union Square with a couple of stops along the way. We got to go to a bunch of different places, some that I had never even heard of, some that I've heard of and had never tried, and some where I've been before. We ended up getting a lot more chocolate than we expected and than we could eat in one sitting, but that was ok because you could get your chocolate pieces in a little bag to take home and enjoy later.
Our tour guide, Sarah, was wonderful. Extremely friendly and knowledgeable.
This tour is perfect for a girls day out or a family event. Even if you're not crazy about chocolate, give this tour a try. You never know, this tour could completely change your mind. -

This was such a wonderful find! We took the Gourmet on Hayes tour and now we are hooked on the Hayes Valley area in San Francisco. Such a beautiful quaint area, and the parking is so easy!
The tour took us to many different restaurants in the area to sample from and we loved them all! I think our favorite was Frjtz. We've been back there with all our friends and family to try. Andrea, our guide, was very friendly and comfortable to walk around with as well as informative. We'd recommend the tour to everyone. -

We had such a great time on this tour! Our guide, Brenna (hope I'm spelling that right), was so much fun, energetic, and very knowledgeable about chocolate. I know my fair share about chocolate, but still found the tour interesting and fun.
You definitely get more chocolate than you can eat...about 2-3 pieces per stop. it might not seem to be a huge quantity, but the richness of the chocolate is enough to satisfy any sweet tooth and I went home with lots of goodies.
I would definitely recommend this to anyone, and will probably go on their chocolate and wine tour. -

We came the day after our wedding with friends from Oklahoma and Rhode Island for the Chocolate tour. We had a blast and learned a lot. I loved how our guide threw in some SF facts/history for the out-of-towners, and how we visited places I would have never known about! I just finished my last piece of chocolate bought on the tour and now I am sad :( Must find good chocolate fast.

What a delicious slice of San Francisco history! Two friends and I took the chocolate walking tour and were absolutely delighted. We were lucky enough to be guided by Avital who is a bundle of information, enthusiasm, chocoholism and energy. She not only taught and guided us through the chocolate adventure, but brought in wonderful tidbits of San Francisco history. This is absolutely worth the price and the time (it took the entire three hours as advertised) and a great walk through a small part of downtown SF. I can't wait to take the Hayes Valley tour next, and will be sure to request her as our guide. By the way, you get WAY more chocolate than any one person can consume in a day, so bring a small doggy bag. My husband was thrilled to have my left overs!

I went on the chocolate tour but was a little disappointed. $50 a person is really too expensive for what it was. Also, the tour guide really didn't know a lot about the science of chocolate. She gave me the wrong information on several questions I asked about chocolate. That being said, the guide was very nice and friendly and did know a lot about the retailers we visited. I would also suggest that the tour start a little earlier so it ends by 1:00...I was starving for lunch when it ended at 1:30.

What a fantastic morning we spent with John Cruger. He led us on a 1.25 mile walk thru downtown, beginning with Ferry Building tasting of Shraffenberger and Recchuiti. John talked to our small group (6) about history of chocolate, differences between chocolate makers, confectioners and purveyors, and provided such a wonderful education about the right way to "taste" chocolate. The vendors were incredibly friendly and gave us wonderful samples of their chocolates. My favorite was Charles Chocolates. Absolutely recommend this trip to true chocolate aficionados and those who just like chocolate.

SPOILER ALERT! This review will give away the places we went to on our "Gourmet on Hayes" tour. Although your tour may be different, if you want to be surprised, don't read any more.
My boyfriend and I took the tour to celebrate our anniversary. Our guide met us (and the other 10 people in our group) at Patricia's Green in Hayes Valley. She was friendly and walked around until she found everyone.
She started the tour off with some foodie info and then we commenced the eating. First stop was Miette for some cupcakes which we ate at the park (they are across a tiny street from each other). Delicious cupcakes! Next stop was Frjtz for yummy yummy fries and dipping sauces. You get to try a lot more sauces with the big group than you would on your own. Next stop- True Sake, a very cool sake shop where your guide buys some sake and you go to Marino for fish tacos and your sake. The sake is good, the fish tacos are mediocre. Onward to Samovar for tea and goat cheese-stuffed dates. Next stop- Paulette. Amazing macarons and you get to try 2! Next stop is Arlequin To Go for cheese and wine. This is a cute place and the cheeses are good. Our last stop was Christopher Elbow where we each had two of their delicious chocolates.
Our guide, Beth, was great. She gave info, but it was not overwhelming and she really tried to connect with the people in the group.
Easy to book and a very fun thing to do in the city. -
Review from T. K.
Boston, MA
After going on this tour, I do not have heart to eat Hershey's, Godiva, or Nestle. Confession: I might be a chocolate snob now. This tour exposed me to a whole new world of chocolate, including chocolate with chipotle and cinnamon and bacon!
Luckily, we went on a beautiful, warm day in San Francisco, which is a rarity. My friend and I ate a little bit two hours beforehand, so not to spoil our appetite. We brought water to cleanse our palette and ziploc bags for the chocolate that we could not finish. Our guide, Sarah, was friendly and familiar with the history of chocolate and SF. Since our group was small (around 10), we were able to meet and talk to other chocolate afficionados. One of my regrets was that I did not buy more chocolate on the tour, especially at Fog News. -
Review from Sean G.
Napa, CA
The price is high ($50) for the tour but the money is in the chocolate. You get a fair share of high-end chocolate from 7 different stops around Union Square, the Financial District, and the Ferry Building. So much chocolate that you are unlikely to eat it all during the walk.
The tour guide is both affable and knowledgeable about the City and chocolate. It was a pleasure to chat with her and our fellow tourists about our chocolate experiences.
San Francisco has become the epicenter of chocolate making in America and this tour provides a wide variety of evidence to that effect. A news stand with over 200 quality bars. A cafe serving Belgian hot chocolate. A stand in a mall with truffles from around the world. And each stop with plenty of local treats, too.
Not everybody will plunk down $50 but a walking tour can be a special delight and two days later I am still eating the free chocolate that I obtained on the tour. -
Review from Camille W.
Belmont, CA
This is NOT a tour for folks that have Snickers Bars stashed under their mattresses, nor for the person who stocks up on Halloween candy but never hands any out to the trick-or-treaters. This tour is for those who REALLY want to learn about chocolate and local history.
We took the Chocolate and Wine tour. Wonderful, Wonderful experience. Cacao, Cacao ~~ I fully understand why it was used as offerings to the gods. I now know to, look, smell and then taste Chocolate, savor it and enjoy it! I turned into a Chocolate snob in two hours. You take a tour and you will too.....
(Note: Eat before you take the Chocolate and Wine tour -- I was tipsy by the end of the tour.) -

Well first I have to say Andrea the owner was beyond great!!!!!
We were having a family reunion and wanted to do a food tour in San Francisco. Andrea was so helpful and we were able to plan a private tour of the Hayes area and it was amazing!!!! We went to some really cool places and our Tour Guide gave us some great history of the area also. Everyone (13 of us) had a great time and will be talking about it for years to come!!!! -

What a fun way to learn about one of the most simplest pleasures -- chocolate! Albeit I conduct tours here and there, I have to say I learned so much about chocolate from doing these tours. I feel extremely informed about the culinary world and I love working with all the stores we visit. A great way to spend a few hours nibbling on tasty pieces of heaven!

What a delightful way to spend Mother's Day! And my daughters 17th birthday! A-vowed chocoholics will be over the moon with all the exotic choices of chocolate offered on tour. Lots of generous samples, some might think too much - but I say never say no to chocolate!
Rachael was an enthusiastic tour guide, throwing in historical tidbits about the city as well as chocolate notes. The walk is easy to manage as it is a straight shot from the Ferry Building to Union Square. The hosts at the chocolate shops were helpful and knowledgeable...Sunday, Mothers Day and all!
I enjoyed it immensely! -

Sweet!!
Fantastic experience that blends fun and information as perfectly as a fleur de sel truffle blends sweet and savory. The knowledgeable guide opened my eyes (and mouth!) to the history of chocolate, the process of making it and--best of all--how to taste the complexities of it. I got far more chocolate than I expected--more than I could eat. We discovered lots of shops I never knew existed and even learned about San Francisco history and architecture on the way. I strongly recommend this tour to anyone with the slightest interest in chocolate. -

We took the Gourmet on Hayes tour earlier this week, and found it wonderful. Highly recommended for foodies who want to see a part of the city that few tourists ever make it to. It was me, my wife, and our 16-year-old daughter. Avital, our guide, was very friendly, informative, and a lot of fun. We had a small group -- just six of us in all -- which certainly made things much more personal. The neighborhood is beautiful, and we learned about it as well as the history of California cuisine and the six degrees of separation from the places we went from Alice Waters. The tour included tea at Samovar Tea Cafe, fries and dipping sauces at Frjtz Gourmet Belgian Fries, fish tacos at Marino Mexican Seafood Restaurant, gingerbread cupcakes at Miette Confiserie, Parisian macaroons at Paulette, truffles at Christopher Elbow Artisinal Chocolates, and finished with a cheese plate and wine in the beautiful courtyard of Absinthe Brasserie. Everything was delicious and none of it was anything we, as out-of-towners, ever would have found on our own.

Our tour guide - Rachel - was really nice. We had more chocolate than we could have imagined. It was nice to be a tourist in the City for a day. This was a really fun tour and Rachel, our tour guide, was very knowledgeable. We strolled through the Hayes Valley area and sampled teas, chocolates, french fries, fish tacos, gourmet cupcakes and sake. The tour starts at Patricia's Green which has some striking artwork that changes regularly. Rachel brought us to the community garden where volunteers labor everyday to create an organic garden for the benefit of the entire neighborhood. This tour was excellent, a great value, and I highly recommend it.

This tour starts at the Ferry building and ends at Union Square. The tour includes chocolate sampling from over half a dozen shops. The chocolates sampled are for the most part dark chocolate so you really have to be a die hard chocolate fan to appreciate it!!! We did try applewood smoked bacon milk chocolate which was surprisingly very good!! Beth, our tour guide was great! She was very friendly and had lots of interesting information about the local history. I strongly recommend to pace yourself with all the chocolates. It doesn't seem like that much at first but by the time you're finished with the tour you're about ready to OD on chocolate!! After the tour you can shop at your leisure. Highly recommend for a unique day trip.
