The rice was spoiled! Oh helll no. I thought rice was supposed to be made every morning. Who knows how long the rice had been sitting there for? Entrees were only okay. Nothing great.

My dad, wife and I had dinner here the other night.  I guess it's hard to get bad service when my dad knew all the workers and the owner.

Service was super quick.. and while the decor needs updating, the food was fantastic.

You have to try the "House Special Shrimp" if you come here.  Simply amazing!!!

What do I think of Gourmet Delight....

If you've ever been to a chinese restaurant - like - really Chinese (none of that P.F. Changs or Panda Express for me, thank you) - you'll know what service to expect - curt and down to business waitresses, lukewarm tap water, and free soup to start.

Well, what can I say?  It was aiight. (shrug).  Nothing fancy.  I'd give it a B- for cleanliness and C for service.  We'd ordered an item, braised beef and 3 of our party of 5 tasted it and we all agreed that it had been sitting around.  I was one of the 3; the beef was extremely dry and had an odd, almost sour taste to it.  Gag.

Well, we complained and after our server's 3 attempts to convince us that was the way it was supposed to taste, she finally took it back cuz my dad told her to eat it herself.  Yeah, my dad's like that.

Anyway,  Food's alright.  Service is whatever.  The ambience... well, they've still got their X-mas decorations up.  Myabe they're just ready for this year's X-mas?  No matter; the food and service is usually what helps me decide and... let's just say -  I woudln't think of this place to go back to off the top of my head.

Gourmet De-average

If you want a fast, mediocre tasting lunch, then GD is the place you want to be. They serve your basics, really nothing special. Its located in a quiet part of Monterey Park, so you'll barely notice it.

The interior is very plain and service was below average. It seems like they just wanted to get us out of there.

There are just way too many other places to go to. I probably won't go back.

I've been coming here with my family for years. The teeny little parking lot makes me want to shit myself but if you go during non-busy hours it's really not so bad. Really tasty, authentic Chinese food at reasonable prices (IF you go for their lunch special. The dinner prices can get pretty steep). The staff is friendly (if not a bit overbearing sometimes, but I think that's because we've established rapport) and the owner, a super friendly Chinese guy, is super cute and nice and he's always walking around and saying hi to people, if he's around. Love him.

When you come here, you kind of have to know what to order. I always see people ordering stuff like lo mein and orange peel chicken and it's like c'mon really? Here are some of my must-order dishes:

-Steamed pork hoof
-Braised sea cucumber w/shrimp eggs
-Chinese okra with silver fish
-House special shrimp
-Fried chinese rolls
-Ji choy fish soup (or west lake beef soup)
-Sauteed eel with Chinese leeks
-Minced fish w/pine nuts (lettuce wraps-- oh dear God is this good)

Their eight-treasure sticky rice dessert is also divine. They used to proffer it as a free post-meal thing but this may have been discontinued.

Food is ok.  We ordered the most expensive Banquet for a party of 10, for the price of $400+, it is definitely not worth what you've paid for.  Service is bad, waitress has an attitude problem.   Air ciculation is bad there's a bad odor due to the plumbing problem.   The restaurant was painted in purple looks like taro cake.  Anyways, after we've paid for the bill, we simply doesn't have any satisfying feeling.  We will definitely not come back again.

This is my first review... and I've chosen to do Gourmet Delight since it's legitimately fantastic and it's right next to where I live. Hey, I had to start off with somewhere close right?

Upon first glance it seems slightly unassuming, complete with flickering neon lights, but step inside and you'll find it's relatively clean and cozy. The staff were helpful the first time I came. They helped pick out things that I suggested might suit my tastes.

And I keep on coming back for them - what great suggestions! Shanghai style spare ribs are magnificent. The spicy Mapo tofu is delectable down to its sauce. If you try to drink that though you're asking for a stomach deep dose of yoga flame... I did anyway. No regrets at all. Maybe.

Even the rice - if you can term it this way - pops (non-explosive) and is very fresh tasting. Prices are very reasonable and portions are generous so go ahead and splurge! In that case, what's left over will make a superb lunch the next day.

You'll be seated quickly as well - it's a crime that not more people are eating here. I almost worry that they'll think they're not doing good business and shut down. I'd be broken if they did! I'm just assuming not enough people have discovered this gem.

I'm missing a star here since it's my first and I'll save the 5s for something out of this world. But giving Gourmet Delight 5 stars seems easy. Try it out sometime.

Easy to find location, not too cramped, cool fish tank, and great and inexpensive family portions food! I agree with Christina about the owner, he did seem very friendly and welcoming to non-Asians like me and my (at the time) girlfriend. He definitely makes you want to come back. The female wait staff can stare at you a little too much, but that's to be expected. I find it very amusing that the only beer they have here is Budweiser...where's the Tsing Tao?!?! I especially love their meat dishes.

This place has delicious Chinese food for reasonable prices. They can seat a lot of people on short notice. The service is quick and polite. The owner is a total sweetheart! He loves when non-chinese people eat there and goes out of his way to greet you and make you comfortable.
My friends all love the House Special Shrimp, but I'm allergic so....
I love their tofu pork dishes and the veggies!

*shhhh* last time I was there I have one friend who must have some type of alcohol with dinner. At that time they didn't have a liquor license but the owner served her some really strong *sprite* which he was also partaking of. He's so cool!

He also remembers me every time I show up which is only like 4 times a year since I live kinda far from here.

My one friend still holds a little grudge against the owner cuz he wouldn't serve us a whole fish (with head still attached). He kinda implied that non-chinese people don't know how to eat the whole fish properly and might choke on a bone or two. But I don't care! The food's great!

i have a huge soft spot for the restaurant because it was my late grandpa's favorite and him and his wife would come just about every single week to eat there and the people who work there were extremely nice to him.

So i keep returning to this restaurant with friends and family because their food is so good and the people who work there are usually pretty nice.  It's interesting that both my mom's and dad's sides of family independently have family dinners here.

The name of the restaurant is lame, I admit.  But this is my favorite shanghainese restarant.  They aren't too expensive, their place isn't flashy but it is comfortable, and the food is pretty delicious.  There hasn't been much here that I've ordered and did not love.

I wouldn't say this is necessarily better than any other chinese restaurants, but you are guarenteed a good meal here.

I mean absolutely no disrespect to my kung fu lineage, but my sifu's teacher's favorite dish here, the pork shoulder, really ooged me out.  Then again, I am more sensitive to textures rather than flavors, so while the flavor was very good, the slightly jellylike consistency of this piggy's shoulder, boiled with much enthusiasm, wasn't really for me.

I will not, however, let my personal preferences get in the way of five stars, because the overall quality of the meal was excellent.  I would dock them one star because of service... sure, the food was out faster than I could bat my eyelashes, but they also clean up very quickly as well, which means you kind of have to tell the waitstaff about five times over to keep their hands off your plate because you're not done yet, and that can be marginally obnoxious.
