If I were a rich man,
Ya ha deedle deedle, bubba bubba deedle deedle dum.
All day long I'd eat Gottlieb's Pastrami
If I were a wealthy man!
I wouldn't have to look far.
Ya ha deedle deedle, bubba bubba deedle deedle dum.
If I were a biddy biddy closer,
Yidle-diddle-didle-didle man.

I'd and get a great big bowl of soup with Matzoh Balls a dozen,
Right in the middle of my tray.
A fine steaming bowl.
There would be one cold can of Dr. Browns on the side,
And one sour pickle on the other,
And one half sour on the other, just for show.

I'd fill my mouth with kishke and koogle and knish and lukshen with brazel
For the town to see and hear.
(Insert)Oinking  just as noisily as they can. (End Insert)
With each loud "Chew" "Squeal" "Chomp" "Gobble"
Would land like a trumpet on the ear,
As if to say "Here lives a hungry man."

If I were a rich man,
Ya ha deedle deedle, bubba bubba deedle deedle dum.
All day long I'd eat Gottliebs Pastrami.
If I were a wealthy man!
I wouldn't have to look far.
Ya ha deedle deedle, bubba bubba deedle deedle dum.
If I lived around the corner!
Yidle-diddle-didle-didle man

Another winner from my wife's former neighborhood. The redheaded guy who works here is a sweetheart to us whenever we pop in.

Fantastic pastrami. Wonderful chicken soup. Never been disappointed.

Don't go in looking like you're going to make some extra funds on the corner - this is a restaurant by and for ultaortho Jews.

Good food.  Not the fanciest restaurant around, but very cozy.

This place has the best pastrami on rye in the city--although stingy on the meat--but that's not the story here. This fascinating deli/restaurant is operated by Hasidim (ultra orthodox Jews with a twist) in a frozen-in-time neighborhood where the woman are 100% subservient and the men wear giant fur hats on Saturday to please G-d (spelling out HIS name is a not grave sin per se but erasing or defacing it is so take no chances!). The locals here are even trying to ban a bike lane thru the neighborhood  because it's "immodest".   Be sure not to show any gratuitous flesh--I picked-up my sandwich one hot summer day and got dirtier than usual looks from my bearded, dangling-sideburned server. Next time back (it was the next day, so hooked was I on their greasy, pickled beef) they had a huge, hand-scrawled sign announcing "No shorts or short sleeves allowed" taped to the door.
Most of the other offerings look none to appealing , noodle pie or the stream table chicken chow mein straight out of a 50's Chinese restaurant, for example. For max adventure, go on a Friday afternoon when the neighborhood is bustling with pre-Sabbath activity. Gottlieb's--it's not just a helluva sandwich; it's a journey into living history.
