The owner/operator is a friendly man and he is very proud of his gooey butter cakes. . .rightfully so. He is capitalizing on a uniquely St. Louis creation and he is doing it well. My family enjoyed the several different cakes we tried. The boxes are wonderfully colorful. Good stuff!
After a pleasant day of errands, I needed something sweet. We'd driven by Gooey Louie's many times, but never gone in. Well, it's a new year, so what the hell, eh? First off, I love the different boxes you can have things ordered or shipped in. But it was really disconcerting not having a bakery counter, just boxes of cakes stacked up on tables. I felt weird opening the boxes so I could take a look in them. Get a glass bakery case so we can see the product!
The gentleman working was friendly, but wanted to describe every cake in detail. I just wanted to read the signage and make a quiet decision on my own, you know? I ended up getting a "regular" sample size and a large gingerbread. In all, both were good, but the sample had too much powdered sugar on top. And frankly, I can make a kick-ass gooey butter cake at home. If I do visit GL's again, it will be as a treat for an out-of-towner. Then again, maybe I'll just bake 'em my own.
Oh, I had such high hopes for this place. I mean, an entire store made up of gooey butter cake? That sounds like heaven, right? Sounds like, but just falls incredibly short...
Because I am trying to be more positive in life, I will start with the things I like. The cakes are, well, decent. I actually prefer d.Dooley's gooey butter by about 100%, but hey, you deal, right? They do have some interesting flavors, but I guess I just prefer the original. Also, I love that you can order these, box them up in their array of season themed boxes, and ship them off to people who crave the gooey even after they have moved away. (I understand this longing as I was gone from my fair city for oh so long...)
Now, the negative...they really don't know how to treat customers. My friend ordered some cakes for a party we were throwing, and when she called them to find out a pick up time, they told her, nevermind, we don't have enough cakes we can't get those to you today. Um, WHAT? What are you supposed to do for cake when your baker canceled on you last minute? Then when she asked for a refund, they scoffed at her. I mean, seriously, she has to BEG for a refund? Not ok. Not ok at all. I understand that a bakery will run out of a cake from time to time, but when you place an order, you expect that order to be ready, no matter what is happening at the front of the store.
I have experienced the rudeness as well from time to time. They hate it when you ask them questions, you feel like such a burden. I mean, come on...customer service people...you are a BAKERY!!!! So...three stars....your service is terrible but what a concept!
It appears I've had a more positive experience then the other reviewers. The staff was friendly and attentive. I walked out with the Original cake. My husband and I loved it! The best gooey butter cake we've ever had. The only problem is it's impossible to stop eating it. I would like to try some of the flavors. I hope they make the red velvet gooey butter a mainstay.
