Review Highlights
I don't know why I am telling you this, because the more people that come here, the less good crap there is for me.
But this Goodwill is frickin' awesome. They have so many nice brands compared to the other Goodwills that I have been to before and I haven't really been a huge Goodwill fan until I came to this one.
It's gotta be the location that results in the multitude of higher end brands. There's a lot of H&M (ok not "higher end" but cute nonetheless), Ralph Lauren and I've seen theory and Zara there too. The shoe selection isn't as great the twice times I've really looked, and neither is the home-goods section.
What I really go here for is the women's clothing. Cute dresses, cute blouses, where $4.99 seems to be the magic number.
I'm a low key kinda girl who likes to look cute, but is not willing to spend $80 on a blouse EVERY single time I go shopping, so this place def fits my needs.
I leave with at least 5 items to spice up my wardrobe each time, and that makes me a happy shopper!
I have had amazing finds at this Goodwill location. Just found a Nanette Lepore dress there today for $8 and a black DvF wrap dress for $7. Can't beat those prices!
The store is very clean and well maintained.
I have been to a fair amount of thrift stores in the City and I was recently wowed by this one. I think there is a new management or something. The other reviews are totally right about it being nice and CLEAN. This place is pretty huge so it's not all jammed and overflowing everywhere. They recently added a new section which anyone walking by might think its a fancy boutique-y type store. Definitely check that out. They have even hired a display staffer who is constantly updating an attractive set-up near the door. The vibe is much different from other Goodwills because of the extra lighting and also, they now have awesome music.
Lastly, they have a nice dressing room area. Not one ad hoc shack in the corner. Three dressing rooms that have benches and mirrors.
I love crossroads too but jee, 1/3 of the price for the same item and wider selection just down the street? Hmmm...
This is a great Goodwill because it's in a nice area, so they have a lot of good stuff. Last time I went I got some very pretty white, ceramic Pottery Barn bowls for $1.99 each, these gorgeous blue vases that we arranged in the entrance to my friends apartment with candles inside them, and these really cool frosted purple ombre shot glasses. Good finds!
Really efficient donation location, I swung by this place on a Sunday afternoon with a trunk load of stuff and I was on my way within 3 minutes. There's a side entrance for donations and all you need to do is dump your items close to the desk, fill out a form if you'd like to get a tax deduction and off you go.
I learned that in addition to clothes donations they accept electronic items for recycle, I'll definitely be heading back with an old stereo I need to get rid of.
Easy curbside donation area staffed by genuinely nice people.
I'm not usually a thrift store kinda guy, but a few days ago I had to procure a suit and tie on short notice and didn't feel like sending a thousand bucks to Ralph Lauren (the actual price of a sport coat from the store up the street). I wandered into this shop and walked out with a pinstriped jacket, white dress shirt, two ties and a pair of dress shoes for about $23.50. Money well spent.
I didn't recognize the shoe brand when I was at the store, but I looked them up online later and they retail for $430, I paid about eight, plus an extra three bucks for a new pair of shoe laces from Walgreens. Oh, and they are super comfy too.
My theory is that the best thrift stores are the ones that border the nice neighborhoods. In this case all the wealthy people from Pacific Heights and the Marina donate their slightly used fancy stuff to this place, which would seem to explain my fancy shoe find.
I scored a gently used super awesome jean jacket here without even trying.
You can save a boat load of cash. Now I know why their stock is going up.
Oh yeah, they don't charge you tax either. Ka'Ching! I'll definitely be scouring these racks for another gem.
I looove thriftshops & this is one that has stayed on my list to check up on every few months. I always find goodies here. Seven for All Mankind Jeans for $5.99 yesss $5.99, you just have to keep looking like a needle in a haystack & I promise you will find something amazing! Also, great cardigans for $4 from H&M, I've seen cute VS Pink shirts (xs =\) and other great steals here. I got some super cute glass coaster's with a wooden holder $3 couldn't believe it! So yes there are great finds here & I love how organized they are, not by size, but clothing wise. Definitely check this place out =) then maybe grab some sushi in Japan town lol
this Goodwill Store is SUPER ORGANIZED and CLEAN with GREAT STUFF!
before i went inside, i made a list in my head on what to buy. i needed a plain, long white tank-top, kitchenware and black stilettos.
i simply walked up to a rack of white tank tops. i found one that i liked within a minute! plus, it was a brand new H&M tank top for a price of $3.49 with no tax.
unfortunately, i couldn't find black stilettos in my size, but it's okay b/c i got what i needed.
*a great thing they do now to be eco-friendly is:
-they charge $0.05 for a plastic bag in a purchase
*bring your reusable bag if you plan to buy a lot of things here!
of course, i'll be back here again!
{happy shopping!}
Between the disappointment I felt in seeing the same things for inflated prices in the NYC Goodwill's I am returned to SF for the holidays to run rampant around the isles of clothes in the Goodwill on Fillmore in J-Town......by far my favorite Goodwill to date.....not to mention a much economically friendlier option to effing Crossroads and Buffalo Exchange in the Haight.
In the Fillmore Goodwill I have found scores of good buys including labels (if you are into that) like Banana Republic, Jones New York, JCrew, Calvin Klein, and DKNY. Also you can find a good amount of vintage clothing, suits, and dresses. I don't really browse much of the shoes, as over the years I have learned to be picky about used shoes.......you never know when an unwanted case of foot fungi will come to get you.
For those in SF: if you are tired of the pretentiousness and overinflated prices of "thrift" stores and "second hand" places like Crossroads or Buffalo Exchange in the Haight, try out this Goodwill and I promise you won't break your wallet. Plus they have clean dressing rooms :)
I have a bad habit that usually involves eBay and pounds of questionable "vintage" jewelry that either easily breaks or turns my skin a pukey shade of green. I also have a LOT of free time in the summer--too much, if you know what I mean--and I end up frittering away my time bidding on tat, painting walls colors that only look good in theory (but cause eye-bleeding in reality), and "cooking" shitty concoctions that not even the neighborhood opossums will eat when I leave it out for them. One day last week, after cleaning the kitchen, brushing the dogs, and applying eye makeup ala Amy Winehouse for the hell of it (no wonder housewives in the seventies popped pills; cleaning all day bores me shitless), I decided to check out the Goodwill on Fillmore for vintage jewelery; I figured that their Pacific Heights location must mean that the rich folk give their good stuff to them.
They do, but you have to get there before some crazy lady (possibly my doppelganger) who comes in every morning buys it all up. All that they had left were some late 80's remnant earrings (not the good kind of 80s) and a shitload of pooka shell necklaces; now I know where they go to DIE. I did score some long, jingly belly dancing earrings, guaranteed to drive everyone up the fucking wall, and a pair of late-60's purple mod earrings, all for $6.00. I also stumbled in while they were having a $2 clothing sale, but I couldn't bring myself to try on any of the clothes. Paradoxically, I'm a filthy germaphobe.
It can be a little too much of an adventure trying to find stuff in here, but otherwise this place rocks. They have stuff sorted by color and type (in the women's section anyway) but you really have to have something specific in mind when you're looking (unless you actually like shopping aimlessly, in which case you could spend hours here).
I found a nice black jacket for my trip to Cleveland last December that I've been wearing pretty much ever since and a few choice 70s-ish looking items for a party (because we all know how likely orangey-pink is going to come back in style). It seems smaller than some other thrift stores, but the selection is decent and it's not creepy either.
4.5 stars
I like this one. The old one was kitty-corner across Fillmore & Post and was tiny. Made me cranky bumping into people! This one actually doesn't have that much more merchandise but it has more SPACE, thankfully.
They keep it clean and well-stocked. The inventory is no different (better or worse) than any other Goodwill in the City, but my impression is that the staff is uniformly knowledgeable, efficient and friendly, which is a plus (or three).
On the norm I don't shop at second hand stores. I made some donations of some old clothing and shoes and I was amazed that this particular place is not all cluttered with junk at all. It's a new place. They moved right across the way from the old building. This one is modern looking and well organized. I was shocked that they had security cameras all over. Can you imagine people shoplifting here. The items must be good then.
Some things are not worth purchasing but I don't hear any complaints.
I shop at the Goodwill because I am poor.
I spend most of my money on booze, parking tickets and toys for my cat.
I dress in black most of the time, and have decided to change my style for the new year. So, I walked in this Goodwill hoping to find a sexy polyester dress or maybe a colorful sombrero. I was shocked at the cleanliness of this location.
I just went to the Goodwill on South Van Ness last week. It smelled like pee and I felt all itchy. Me and a muttering scarf lady I met in "outdoor apparel" agreed that it could be lice living in the fabric of the clothes and lying their eggs everywhere to hatch. Thus, creating thousands of little lice babies crawling all over us, making a lice city on our scalp and drinking our blood for nourishment.
This place is like, 5 million stars better!!!!
Maybe it's because this Goodwill is located in Pacific Heights. The people who live in Pac Heights do things with computers and have more money and drive better cars, but aren't lame like people that live in the Marina. The Marina doesn't even have a Goodwill, because poor people refuse to wear stripes. (????) Or maybe it's because this Goodwill just opened and the bacteria forming on all the clothes hasn't had time to cultivate yet.
Whatever. I didn't find a dress but I did find a few black shirts. I might come back for this black belt that I saw for $2.75 because I heard from an anonymous source (fine, it was over the loud speaker) about a 2 for one belt sale next week. !!!!!!!!!!!
BONUS- There are actually dressing rooms at this location with HOOKS to hang stuff on. And no random wet spots on the ground. And no hairy man hand that tries reaching for stuff underneath the gap in the door, while you are trying on a sweater wondering if there is lice in it (Flashback to South Van Ness *shudder*).
My last thrift store of the day in SF, and it ended with a decent note, giving me some faith again in buying thrift, although I didn't actually buy anything per se. I went in here with my hubby, and this store is organized, more or less, at least their clothing was. Good Will stuff isn't cheap, but it's not over-the-top. I like that you can usually get a decent jacket for $8, and shirts for under $5. Still wish it were cheaper, but at least by purchasing here, it goes towards a good cause. Hubby pointed out to me an H&M blazer for less than $8, but it was velour material. Not my type of material, but still a good price for a relatively new blazer. I don't recall a book section here at this location...I probably missed it or something...
Edit: 03/2009 - I bought several earrings here, very good selection of jewelry...not cheap though!
This has got to be my favorite GW in SF.
I think it actually began my addiction for thrifting and recycling clothes.
It recently moved to across the street, but the store seems bigger and cleaner than before. Also, I managed to score some pretty good finds, and the prices are very reasonable. (LA Fire dress, 4.95?!?!)
The wares section is very small and kind of pathetic, so go here for the clothing or the book section.
This review is for donations only - I have not been inside the store.
This Goodwill recently moved buildings but is still located on the same corner.
The new store has a 'loading' parking spot on the street directly in front of the loading area, which makes donations more convenient.
This is the most organized and most spacious Goodwill I've ever been in. I was in here for maybe 15 minutes buying a VCR (don't judge me) and was amazed at how it didn't look like an indoor flea market.
I didn't get a good look at the offerings of anything but VCRs, but it still gets a high rating because it was just that damned organized! Oh, and also my VCR worked.
I can never find anything but maybe a couple of books when I go to the Goodwills in the city. Maybe I don't get there in time for the good deals or anything- but blah. This one seems like it doesn't have enough stuff for the space it has. Today I bought L. Ron Hubbard's Dianetics because it was $1.50. I wonder if it was cheaper for a reason...But for one book I waited way too long in line. They had one register open and I had to wait behind two women who are trying to bargain further on prices and the cashier was just really slow. So I missed two buses. Jerk.
In this paragraph I am rating all Goodwill stores. I chose this particular one because its in between my work and home and I have had the greatest success there recently.
I love goodwill. I will (to the chagrin of anyone who ever accompanies me) search through every article of clothing and book and frame and always find a hand full...or big bag full of great stuff.
If I had to pay full price for work clothes I would kill a hobo in a fit of rage. Lucky for all the hobos out there, Goodwill exists.
This Goodwill has moved since I first began shopping there. It used to be on the opposite side of Fillmore as it is now. I've really hit the jackpot at this particular goodwill, a number of times. For that reason, I am hesitant to yelp about it.....but why not share a good thing with others, i guess. Target liquidates to the Bay Area Goodwill so often times you will find brand new target items (clothes, shoes, housewares) at drastically discounted prices. During halloween, you can find brand new costumes for just a few dollars. I've also found chrismas decor here as well. Its awesome! If you've never been, I would recommend checking it out.
Being new to thrifting, this is perhaps one of the better Goodwill stores I have been to. With all the high ratings, I knew it was time for me to take a trip down to the Fillmore and check this store out. First and foremost, this Goodwill is fairly clean and organized; still has that thrift store smell "stank" - but it's bearable. Good size store with lots of departments, but I only really perused through the women's shirts, jackets, dresses, shoes and purses. One thing that is so great about this particular location is that the clothes are actually wearable and not terribly worn or marked up as is with other thrift shops. Found lots of BCBG Maxazaria, Banana Republic, Merona, H&M and Forever21, tons of blazers for the guys (some even from Macy*s), women's suits (spotted an Anne Klein 2-piece suit with the tags still attached); if you are into name-brand stuff, it won't take you long to find something worthwhile. Brownie points for the "boutique" out in the back which houses some of the more expensive items which look practically brand new (then again, most of the items here are in pretty good condition). Customer service was neutral - wasn't happily greeted at the door nor was I given any rude or negative attitude so I guess it all balances out. I went shopping around noon and there were a lot of workers out on the floor restocking which is somewhat of a nuisance because the aisles are already tiny as is and the temptation of going back to see what they just brought in kicks in when i'm supposed to be heading to the check-out line. Regardless, my friend and i bought five items for a grand total of $21 and some odd cents. Pretty great if you ask me considering that two of those items were men's blazers which normally cost a lot more than the $4 and $7 we bought them for. On top of that, they have this "Buy 5, get 1 free" deal where the cheapest of your five items is free (thus, we got the $2 shirt for free). To be even more eco-friendly, they are now charging a 5-cent fee for plastic bags so be nice and start bringing your own to help save the environment. Oh, and no tax. Way to go, Goodwill. Way to go.
This place is a huge improvement on the old Goodwill across the street. Clean, well-organized, with some fancy duds and a nice book section. I've always appreciated Goodwill's color-coded organization of the clothing racks-- it beats wading through jumbled heaps of stuff-- but this takes it one step better. Prices are still Goodwill prices, too, if you stick with the regular racks.
I haven't found any great clothes at this location yet, but I got a great vintage suede bag for 4 dollars the other day. Turns out it was handmade in Italy, with real snakeskin straps. score!
This is one of the nicest thrift stores I've visited. It was hip without being annoying and nice without being slick. It's spacious and well organized. They have freaking fitting rooms. The books section isn't messy. it didn't even smell funny. I felt infinitely more comfortable here than at the fancy stores up the street. With most Goodwill's we're talking Tuesday morning time waster, but really, this one's not a bad place to spend a Saturday night! Party down and try on gowns!
Great store! I donated and then went shopping. I found a Sean Jean shirt for just $7.49. I love bargins! Meet the manager Lonnie he is a scream.
it's clean. perfect for weirdos like I. I only and only will I walk towards the handbag selection first. then the scarfs and so on and on. Bags, I've gotten 3 very cute handbags for all under 5 bucks. 4.95 (: haha. They might not be designer but there are designer bags. Once I saw a prada but didn't want to pick it up. Because thats not me. I got a Sac's handbag for 4.95 too, but it was all to well for me. Once there was a sample couch bag. WERID, i know but it was cool. Got a really cute vinyl clutch, but i fcxked myself over because it was vinyl. .____. went real well with my dress through, just my mom wanted to throw it out. If you knew my mother, it's like "WHY YOU BUY THIS, IT'S VINYL, DO YOU NOT KNOW!" "GO GO RETURN IT, AND DON'T COME BACK TILL YOU'VE RETURN IT." "But why mom, it's cute" "YEAH, IT'S CUTE. IT'S CUTE ENOUGH TO RETURN" " no return policy" ALL BAD ALL BAD!!
