This restaurant is like your first mistress who's stuck around so long she now runs the brothel. You might forget about her for a while, but when you make it back you get exactly what you need. It's possible that the proliferation of quality sushi in this town has changed the definition of what eating seafood out means to the 21 - 35 yr old consumer. So if your goal is for fresh fish, Goode Company Texas Seafood (GCTS) should be an option.
For starters the staff at GCTS is all parts awesome: friendly, knowledgeable, eager to up sell without being pushy jerks, which isn't hard with such a quality menu. Went for the grilled flounder po-boy and finished my plate elated. The fish is so tender and delicious, perfectly complimented with a unique tartar sauce and the freshest French bread. Oy que rica!!! Also enjoyed my first St Arnold's Amber, which is quite a treat from a local brewery. Now that football season is essentially over, I'm seriously considering becoming a participant on one of their brewery tours. What capped off the evening and pushed this review from four to five stars is GCTS's pecan pie with vanilla ice cream. Gigantic in proportion, whole pecans in rich buttery caramel, just scintillating to the taste buds when the vanilla ice cream goes all melty.. .good gracious, somebody call the LAW!
Usually when you see the Goode name you really can't go wrong and this longstanding seafood joint is no exception. Living in the burbs prevents me from eating here more often, but there was a day when I lived near Rice U that I frequented this place often. My date and I stopped by last week and I am glad things have not changed.
We sat at the bar since it would have been a huge wait for a table. We ordered the Campechana, just like everyone else. Seafood was fresh, just the right way to start our meal. My date had the broiled catfish which she loved. I had the rainbow trout which was nice and flaky. I can't think of a time when I have been disappointed coming here and this was another great meal.
Not a fan of Goode BBQ, so I was a bit apprehensive to come here but glad I did. The interior & atmosphere are very welcoming, great mixed of clientele and friendly wait staff. Came here for an early dinner on Saturday around 6.30pm, was packed already.
I am a big fan of ceviche, s we tried the self-proclaimed "original" Campechana (shrimp & crab), which is totally different but very yummy with chunks of crab meats and shrimp, indeed very popular appetizer as most table has one! Then I had a bowl of seafood gumbo, well, this is the thick/creamy brown version, not the dark roux/broth version like you find at Jimmy Wilson's. The flavor is not strong enough, so I still prefer the one at Jax's Grill... My partner had the Gulf Red Snapper, wow, fantastically grilled with slightly charred and very flavorful. It came with side dishes that make the portion just right, not too much until you get over-stuffed.
From this visit, Goode Seafood has earned a spot on my list of Best Seafood place in Houston... well done and I shall come back to try other dishes!
Goode Company has a long-standing tradition of cooking rib-sticking, enjoyable food for the masses, and GC Texas Seafood is no exception. Located in a railcar of sorts just off of Kirby drive, the ambiance is interesting and unique. What really stands out here, though, is the food.
The seafood campechana has long been hailed by many of my friends as the best in Houston. I'll have to agree with them after trying it. The seafood is generous, and the taste is out of this world. Although this place is known for its gumbo, I went a little off the beaten path and tried the catfish with verde sauce. That was a good call. The catfish was moist, flavorful, and perfectly grilled. The generous heap of verde sauce on top had some decent heat, but the freshness of the tomatillos came right through. It's a must-try for sure.
The seafood is pretty good if you like mesquite seasoning otherwise not much to left on the menu to select from. The service is slow at times but friendly. I found it a bit pricey for what it is.
Very very good seafood. My halibut was very fresh I also loved the layout of the restaurant.
Service was very good, too.
Seafood restaurants can be lumped into three categories...horrible, middle of the road or outstanding. I put this place in the middle category. The food is good, however so are 10 other restaurants just like it scattered around Houston. Nothing separates it.
I got the fried oyster po boy. Everything seemed really fresh. The 5 oysters were big, perfectly fried and juicy. The roll they came on was huge and fresh. Their french fries were good too. The three other people at my table got seafood platters either broiled or fried and there were no complaints.
So even though the food was good there is nothing pulling me back.
I come from a family of Gulf Coast fisherman (read seafood nazis) and Goode Co Seafood has been our local go to place for fresh, unfussy deliciousness for 15+ years.
A friend and I went in last Sunday to sample the seasonal crawfish items. The boiled crawfish was spiced perfectly and came with corn, potatoes, sausage, and pearl onions. I've had crawfish from several places around town this season and Goode Co knocked all the others out of the park. We rounded out our meal with some fabulous crawfish pies and a link of the best damn boudain I've ever had. In the midst of our MMMMs, AHHHHs, and OMGs I told my pal - This may be my new death row meal. She nodded and said Uh,Yeah, and we put our faces back in our plates.
Prepare to drop some coin because this place is not inexpensive but the food is definitely not to be missed. And ignore all those yahoos before me who whined about soggy fried items. When you go to a place this "goode" dont order a safe fried platter when you can have fresh mesquite grilled flounder, snapper, or halibut instead.
Best end to the meal is the pecan pie with a scoop of ice cream. MMMM MMMM!
I would like to give it a 3.5.
If you want fried fish, they do a competent job here. Nothing was earth-shatteringly amazing, but was basic well-prepared fried fish.
I had the crawfish and oyster po' boy and the fried green tomatoes. I liked both, but am not rushing to come back here anytime soon.
One of my favorite restaurants in Houston. The mesquite seafood is outstanding as are the sides. The decor is also quite interesting. High recommendation.
shrimp campechana, gumbo, and mesquite catfish filet with shrimp etouffee. very strong margaritas. definitely worth a visit if you're ever in houston. actually, it might be worth making a trip just for the campechana and margaritas.
A hotel I stayed at in Mexico last year had the best campechana I had ever tried. We ordered it every day, for basically every meal. I left, saddened that it would be a long time before I got to eat campechana like that again.
Then a friend brought me to Goode Company.
The campechana here is perfect - as good as I remember from Mexico, if not better. The gumbo is RICH, and frustrating because the cup size is too small, but the bowl size is too big. Delicious all the same. The seafood is basic: fried, grilled, and always fresh.
The service is friendly and fast, what you would expect from any of the Goode restaurants. You might have to wait on Friday and Saturday nights, but its never miserably long.
Another family staple...we always start with the campechana - shrimp, crab, avocado in tomato salsa, with chopped jalepenos and chips...MMMM! They have amazing gumbo too!! When soft shell crab is in season, I love the baby soft shell crab poboy. Otherwise, when crawfish is in season, I get 2 pounds to myself with the corn, potatoes and onions and they provide the bib and the wetnaps!!! Everything here is delicious down to the saltines on the table and the lemons for the fried seafood. Always a fun place to visit!!
This place has great seafood. The campechana is the top reason to go here. Start with a dozen oysters on the half shell and an order of campechana (shrimp, crabmeat, avocado and salsa with fresh jalapenos served in an old time sundae glass with corn chips) and see where that leaves you and maybe a cup of gumbo to finish the meal off.
It's hard to describe the distinct taste of mesquite grilled seafood. But it's really the only way to go and it suits all types of fish, shrimp anything! I just went on Sunday and had a hard time choosing an appetizer but decided on my standby the Campechana de Mariscos aka seafood cocktail. There are huge satisfyingly chunky pieces of crab and large shrimp. Add that too the salsa base, and creamy chunks of guacamole and that's what I call one hell of a seafood appetizer.
I ordered the Mesquite grilled catfish and fried oysters. I usually get some combination of something mesquite grilled, but the oysters were only ok, I prefer them fresh. The sides that come with the meal are amazing themselves seafood rice and a seafood empanda. This place is perfect for a seafood lover who likes to taste the freshness of the catch without heavy sauces or fried. and you have to sit in the old train car!
Great campechana de mariscos - with chunks of crab and shrimp and buttery bits of avocado. No restaurant in Houston can come close to this.Add on a bowl of crab gumbo and I'm set for the night.
My hubby loves the shrimp tamales and the soft-shell crab po boy - but it is only available in season. My father loved the fried catfish.
The prices are a bit on the high side, but you always get fresh seafood prepared to perfection.
When Thursday night rolls around and we do not feel like cooking, this tends to be our destination. I tend to order the same fish and shrimp combo each time because I like it. Though it is fried it is not heavy or greasy but cooked exceedingly well. The place serves generous portions, has good sides and a good selection of fish to choose from. My wife had the gumbo last time and liked it quite a bit (she could not finish the bowl as her main course, it is so filling). The wine selction is decent but not great with several varietals and choices and the beer they offer is good. However, the reason to go is the food. Stay healthy and choose from a variety of grilled or go my way and order it fried. Either way you will not leave hungry.
good LOCAL seafood
the have an awesome appetizer wrapped ina banana leaf or something like that food was a little pricey
The Gumbo and Po-boys are second to none. I often go and dine only on fresh shucked Oysters and a hearty bowl of Gumbo. Enjoy the rail car, the other side of the joint just doesn't have the same vibe. I have noticed that the wait staff has become somewhat callus and impersonal over the last year, I don't know whats up with that. Make sure you check out the fishing report on the back of the menu and all of the family fishing photos all over the walls. I avoid the Campechana, I know its NOT saviche, but I cant get past the downright sweet taste that overpowers the seafood. I still try it once a year in an effort to fall so deeply in love with it as so many others are.
There's persuasion in the name... allegedly. This was one of my picks for our usual Tues night gathering, and I got the clubbers pretty pumped up about my search of great seafood. I had the typical assortment of fried foods, half were almost soggy & lacked any distinct flavor that made it memorable. I know, I know, it's just fried seafood - how do you go wrong... but how do you leave unsatisfied? The other 3 clubbers were also not impressed w/their entrees. The saving grace was the Campechana - which is like a seafood cocktail - that was a refreshing mix of fresh shrimp, crab, pico de gallo & avocados served w/chips. But all in all, a frowning sub par meal.
Another must on the homecoming food tour, Goode Company seafood has too many good options for one visit. Start with raw oysters or the Campenchana (Goode's take on Ceviche) or perhaps some gumbo. You can't go wrong with any of these.
My favorite is the fried oyster po-boy. Amazing. But I haven't found anything on the menu I didn't love.
I realized that I needed to review this place when I wanted a meal from here as my "last meal" on my yelp profile. Whenever I go to Houston (like for the International Quilt Show) I require a minimum of two visits to this place. Mesquite gulf coast shrimp, and shrimp Campechana De Mariscos - the best anywhere. Plus all these great memories...
The best seafood in the West U area, I seriously think. A bit pricey, but you do get fresh fish. If not, they ask you first. All combined with a fun, street car-ish atmosphere makes it a fun place with value-for-money seafood.
i hate this place! I just cant find anything good about it. No taste, bland. just nothing here. I'll get shot for leaving this review but I'm never satisfied (use to have company lunches here). anyway, just go to Pappas Seafood House down the street or Reef. I've tried Danton's and think theyre pretty good too.
I didn't find Goode to be anything special. There were a few standout items on the menu, I would recommend the Baked Crab and the Mexican Seafood Cocktail. The ambiance was pretty neat, the restaurant is part of an old rail car. Overall, a decent place. Maybe worth a second try.
not a big seafood fan, took a date here
Best raw oyster's I've ever had. No sand and they are just simply delicious. The campechana's are incredible! Without a doubt my family's favorite seafood place in Houston.
