Meet up with a bunch of friends to play a round for my buddies 50th birthday.
When you have a group(of 12 or more I beleive)they will set up a private driving range for your group & the green fees were $40.00 ($10-$20 off).
The course is much more difficult then it 1st appears.
Step hill leading off many of the t boxes & real windy in the afternoon(worse on hot summer afternoons).
Fun & challenging for any level of golfer.
Believe the DANGER rattlesnakes sign.

I drove all the way out to the middle-of-nowhere (Antioch) from San Jose to try out a course that I had been hearing good things about.  Roddy Ranch is an old cattle ranch that has been changed into an 18-hole course.  The "clubhouse" was a portable building, it had a pro shop, cafe, restrooms, etc.

We got the $50 rate on golfnow.  Got there early and the guy that checked us in was cool.  He gave us a free bucket of balls, and moved us up a half hour. The range was nice, actual greens for targets and you hit off of the grass, not a slab of astroturf.

The course very much reminded me of Poppy Ridge in Livermore.  Similar "hilly-links" type of layout.  The fairways are wider here at RR though.  The greens are pretty fast, and always break down to the valley (Brentwood) whether they look like they will or not.  Luckily, the guys we played with weren't total douchebags - and they helped us out with a lot of tips.  My lone complaint, the bunkers were awful, they are like wet cement.  Very hard to get any sand with your shots, and you are forced to pick it, which rarely works out.  However, it did look like they were renovating the bunkers, as the last few holes had fresh white sand in them.

One of the hints from the veterans in our foursome, was that their BCG (Beer Cart Girl) was quite the piece of eye candy.  When she rolled up, I had to make sure to catch a glance, or perhaps even stare. If she was a Yelp entitty of her own, she'd easily be rocking a perfect 5-star rating.  If you know what I mean... Half of an extra star for her alone.

Very cool course to play.  I can cross it off of my list now.  But, being from San Jose - I'll probably never come back.  Especially since an identical course, in Poppy Ridge, is only about half the distance from mi casa.

Scored 127 (yes I know.  I'm a horrible golfer) at this lovely course in the rolling hills of southwestern Antioch just of Deer Valley Rd.  Lovely staff.  Super friendly and easy going.  The courses are all very well maintained.  For the most part, balls are easy to spot on these very wide courses.  There are two long par threes and I must warn you:  Wear tons of sun screen because I forgot to cover my arms and legs and the burn was very bad.

If you play tournament golf, this place is so cool because when you return to the clubhouse, the first beer, a nice large 12 oz glass of Sierra Nevada, will only cost yah $1.00.  At least that's what the cute, lovely girl behind the counter charged me.

The neighboring golfers seem, for the most part, to be conscientious say one or two type A, alpha-male, can't be relaxed for a second morons that sometimes frequent here.  Usually, one out of 20 golfers is a complete moron who is always impatient no matter how fast you play.  Some people are simply assholes no matter what the situation.  I wish those people could just live in a cave and eat and live off of fermented gnats and dark scarlet cave berries or somethun...

Basically: the group of four in front of my group of three were lagging and behind our group was a group of two, very lousy golfers who would still catch up to us because of their small number.

Anyway, now that I let out my own inner asshole out...where was I???

"Stop reading my reviews or I'm gonna report you to the course Golf Marshal!!!"

Based on what I have seen and heard I expected better.

The fairways are pretty damn thin. Not a great hitting surface. The greens are very wind blown, sun dried and fast. The bunkers are clay and just shy of unplayable.

The layout is great and I'm betting that in the spring it's a much better track. The practice area is very nice. The bev cart chick looks like a B- level stripper working day shift.

Fantastically maintained course minus the shallow,  clay-like bunkers.

Challenging, varying hole design.  Flat tee boxes, beautifully fast greens. Excellent practice area. Cute cart girls.

I would play here all the time if it were closer.

Shot an 88.

I was expecting better from Roddy Ranch based on the reviews here on Yelp.  Roddy Ranch is a good golf course...just not 4-5 stars good.

Pros:  Very interesting layout.  The holes are set in the hills and have a variety of twists and elevations.  No 2 holes were the same.

Not very crowded.  We had a group of 4 (with 1 beginner) and were never rushed.

Great value.  For 18 holes on Sunday, it was only $30, including the cart (Twilight Rate - after 4pm).

Cons:  Greens were in horrible shape.  There were ball divots ALL OVER!  I know it's the golfer's responsibility to repair their own divot, but the course should know if the condition of their greens need repair...and these needed some major help.

The sandtraps were hard as a rock!  Sand should feel like sand...not cement!

No Water!!!!  It was over 90 degrees out in the Antioch sun, so we were pleased to come up to a water cooler around the 4th or 5th tee...but it had NO WATER IN IT!!!  At the 1/2 way point there was a refreshment stand...CLOSED.  There was a soda machine...NOT WORKING.  And, there was another water cooler...EMPTY!!!!  AHH!!!!  The girl driving the refreshment cart around stopped coming around, by the time we were done with the 7th hole.  It was truly ridiculous.

Location.  The club is out in the middle of nowhere...a good 15 minutes off of Hwy 4.  If it was a better maintained club, it wouldn't even be worth mentioning the drive...but, well, it's not...so I did :p

Overall:  A good course.  Pretty challenging, partially due to the varying elevations and partially due to the crappy greens.  I would not avoid playing here again, but I don't think I would select it amongst the other courses in the area, if given a choice.

It's a beautiful, scenic, very hilly golf course. The fairways and greens are in excellent condition. They have several different colored tee boxes to choose from based on handicap (as opposed to most courses that only offer one tee box for the ladies). It's a difficult course. The rough is REALLY ROUGH. A sand-wedge would definitely get caught, a p-wedge is still kind of iffy --I think I had to use a 7-iron or hybrid to chip out anytime I found the rough! I recommend this course but you may have to be patient with tee-times because the course is always backed up on the weekend. I've played here maybe 4 times, I hope to go a few more someday but I don't like slow play especially because it's so hot there! =(

I don't normally review golf courses in the bay area because...well, just because.  But Roddy Ranch is one of the exceptions.  We made tee times a few days ago and not really knowing that it was going to be frickin hotter than a rats ass while sitting on blazin hot asphalt in 108 degree weather!   It was only 40 bucks to play on a Sunday at 9am!  I know that golf courses are hurting nowadays, but damn, that's pretty cheap for prime time on a Sunday!  So anyway, we roll along the front nine and we're playing for who pays for lunch at the turn and where the hell is the hot dog shack??  It was closed!!   This is the only reason why I give it 4 stars.  But let's move on....so as the day gets goin, it gets closer and closer to that 108 degrees that I mentioned..  We're drinking a lot of water, gatorade, etc and along comes this dude on a cart with a bucket full of towels that are sitting in ice cold water!  What a frickin relief and it couldnt have come at a better time!   Cold towel on the head and cold water all over!  It was better than sex...at that very moment and only that moment.   But I've never been to a course that would even think of doing something like that.
Overall the course was in good condition and was challenging enough.
I would def come back.

One of the best golf values in the Bay Area.  The course is in great shape.   The layout is interesting, scenic, and fun to play.  If you haven't made the trip out to Antioch yet, do it!  You won't regret giving up a $100 round at one of the overpriced courses near the city to make it to this gem.

I'm a 15-20 handicapper, this course has some holes which are great challenges for a golfer of my skill level, and some holes that made me feel like Superman (who doesn't love driving the green on a par 4?!?!).

We'll definitely be back!

Had an excellent time playing this course!  Green fees extremely reasonable with the area!  The course is quite challenging but this adds to the fun!!  The course plays longer than expected or at least it did for me lol!  I might have been having a weak day LOL!  I would recommend this course to anyone who is looking for good golf at cheaper rates for the area and a nice challenge!

This course is very scenic, quiet pleasant to play and fairways are OK. However, when I played there at the end of october 2008, greens were sandy and quiet unplayable. Also, the club-house sucks and these guys will charge you $2.50 for just a little bottle of water.

All in all, a great  bargain and a cool experience.

You can get burned here with the occasional 5 plus hour round, which is a major buzz kill....that being said, Roddy is one of my favorite tracks in the Bay Area for sure. Wide fairways, huge greens and no houses make this a very enjoyable place to spend 4-6 hours. The course is always in great shape and the greens are finally maturing to fast and fair. The rates are good, especially in the afternoon and on weekdays (check their www for specials). It's a haul from the City, but if you live in the East Bay, this place should be on your radar. It is not a course for beginners, but since the rates are pretty low, you do have some 30 handicappers out there which adds to the slow play. Great in the winter- it drains really, really, well.

Roddy's one of the better courses in the East Bay.  The greens are usually very slick and very smooth, but on the firm side.  Challenging layout, particularly when the wind blows.  Incredible bargain during twilight, when you'll likely get around in three (!) hours.
