My favorite spot to order Chinese! Have yet to have a bad dish from this location! I order carry-out or delivery only, as like most Chinese restaurants, the ambiance is less than appealing. But if you are into the drab décor, I've had their lunch buffet once and it was terrific!

Ehhh...I'll come here when people ask me to join them for a bite to eat (hence, why I went there last night). It's okaaaay. It is comparable to a typical Americanized Chinese dish from Chinatown.
I ordered the Chinese New Year Special: Hunan Beef with Scallops. It was 10.95 and for an additional 1.95 you get your choice of soup, an egg roll, and rice. You get a large amount of food for the price; however, it really is the blandest food.
The Scallops were really fishy and the beef tasted like your average beef in brown sauce with no spice. The rice even tasted like the beef dish. You couldn't separate the flavors. The WonTon soup was pretty good. That was the most flavorful out of all of the dishes.
The owners are friendly and the wait staff wants nothing more than for you to enjoy your meal. They were very attentive to filling my water every time they walked passed me.
I try and steer my company in other directions when suggesting this place, but they put up a fight. I don't think they have ever had authentic Chinese food before. -

Some of the best Chinese food I've had in a long time.
This was our second time getting food from them and I upped them a star because they were so accomodating with my complicated ordering process. I wanted the orange chicken, hold the chicken, add tofu. This is the easy way to order it - if that's your thing. I went about it the complicated way, but quickly learned the shortcut. (They said I'm not the only customer who wants orange tofu, so I hope they just add it to the menu soon and save us all some trouble!) Anyway, enough of my rambling. I went to pick up my order a few minutes later, as soon as I paid my food magically appeared.
My orange tofu was a bit lacking in the broccoli, but still tasty. I would have liked it a bit spicier, but that's a personal pref. Hubby liked his egg drop soup. Definitely worth checking out if you live in the area. -

THIS PLACE IS TAINTED, I SAW THEM SHUT DOWN MANY TIMES FOR HEALTH CODES.
How many times have you seen the sign "Closed for mechanical repairs" in their window?
I know the owners and they are nice but I cannot eat here again after things I witnessed.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I've tried delivery from here several times now - just too lazy to drive the 5 to 10 minutes to get there, usual excuses :) Ordering is very easy and they're great about repeating everything back to you. And delivery is FAST and the food arrives piping hot. The food and the delivery service are turning me into a regular.
I moved to this area of town about a year ago and haven't tried seeking out a Chinese place yet. I may have found one now. Egg Foo Young and Hot and Sour soup are my measuring sticks for Chinese restaurants. The versions here are very good. I'll definitely be back and will try other items on the menu. -

Bland Chinese food that all tastes the same. I honestly don't know what the hype is all about with the other reviews. I'm not a food snob by any means but they need to add a few more shakes of MSG to get me back here again. Relatively speaking, the best item was egg drop soup but I don't know how they can mess that up.
P.S. My fortune from the cookie didn't come true. -

I have been coming here since I was a kid in 1974. The food is consistent, and I know it will be served hot and fast. As an adult I have had occasion to bring coworkers here for 20 years with many asking to come every time we are in the area. I love their general Tso s chicken, ask for extra spicy if you like it that way. The lunch buffet is very good too. Fast and reasonably priced. My favorite place!

Golden Wok has the best Hot and Sour Soup. I hate to start by bragging about something as simple as soup, but it is that good. During the week the restaurant is filled with people during lunch hours. That is really the only times I have been there. They have a small buffet during the day. And by small, I mean there are 4 - 5 selections. However none of them are bad. The egg rolls, wings, and crab Rangoon are always amazing. The fried rice is always good. Lastly, I just tried a new dish there, Singapore Noodles. It is outstanding, and I have now tried it at other places, but here at Golden Wok it is the best. Serving size is huge, and is still great the next day reheated.
My only knock on this place, is the parking, which there isn't much. I park across the street on the side street, which is not far at all. And lastly, only one of the waiters ever refills my water. -

We've tried a few different places in the La Grange/Brookfield area and Golden Wok has come out on top. Keep in mind, I have only done carry-out and delivery so I can't necessarily speak to their service.
The food is tasty and as most Chinese food places, the servings are large. Prices seem to be on-par and we usually don't spend more than $25 for two meals. I am pretty picky about my fried rice and theirs is perfect. The pan fried noodles are excellent. I've asked for their schezuan chicken to be extra spicy and they delivered. We've even asked for extra chicken and they definitely added extra.
All in all, no complaints. I thought I should wait to dine-in before posting, but really, what's better than a box of Chinese while you're on your couch at home?
When calling in and placing your order, there does not seem to be a language barrier, making it an easy experience. I can appreciate the fact that they repeat back my order, address and phone number.Listed in: Ethnic Eats

How good is the Golden Wok? Its good enough to be ordering from there from the time I could stomach Chinese food. So, lets just say, its been a long time.
As with most Chinese restaurants, the portions are generous. A small beef fried rice can get me through the night. Speaking of, their beef fried rice is quite rich and dark in color. This is neither good nor bad, just different. Also, for about a buck fiddy, you can get a good sized tub of egg drop soup.
Now, I judge a Chinese restaurant's worthiness based on how good their egg rolls are as this is a requirement of mine to have one with dinner.
Golden Wok's doesn't fail. Its crispy, it tastes fresh, and is not overwhelmed with peanut flavoring. The one I had last week almost had a sweet flavor to it.
I did notice the prices are comparable, if not higher, than my go to Chinese place in the city. Had to scratch my head on that one.Listed in: Noodle Me this Batman

My wife and I came home late and essentially missed dinner, so we looked up local Chinese restaurants here on Yelp. When we saw Golden Wok and the reviews we didn't think we would go wrong...well we did. The reviews were the opposite of what we experienced.
My wife ordered the General Tao's, potstickers, and bbq ribs. The sauce on the ribs was tasteless, the potstickers were very very doughy, and the General Tao's, which is supposed to be a spicy dish, had about as much spice as ketchup. The chicken was overly breaded.
I ordered the combo appetizer platter and the orange peel beef. The app. platter has 1 egg roll, 1 rumaki, 1 fried shrimp, 1 rib, 1 crab rangoon. The egg roll isn't bad, but I have to disagree with a previous reviewer who said there wasn't much of a peanut taste....there was, not that it's a bad thing but it was like eating a bowl of Planters. The rumaki was fine, I already mentioned the ribs, the crab rangoon is the same everywhere you go and the fried shrimp is very large but alot of breading. The orange peel beef, again supposed to be a spicy dish, was all breading, no flavor. It looked like a big lump of breading with zero beef and orange flavor.
Needless to say my wife and I will not be going back and will have to continue our search for decent Chinese in the Brookfield area. -

Golden Wok is a classic Chinese restaurant that should be in every neighborhood. I will get one thing out of the way - parking. There is no lot, just 4-6 spaces right in front of the door. Don't park there because the spaces are so tight that you have to back out onto 17th Avenue. Park next door at the National City Bank.
They do all the stuff - I'll touch on what is awesome:
Hot and Sour soup - I swear, when I am sick, I head over to Golden Wok for some. It is perfect for head colds and congestion! It is mighty tasty, and whatever they put in there, it keeps me congestion-free for hours!
Chicken Kow - A simple dish, but its so so good that I compare any other CK to this one. TONS of chicken, and kow sauce can be icky. Not here! It is sensational!
General Tso's Chicken - The portion is huge, and the sauce is not MSG laden. It's a good, fresh tasting sauce that just works. It's not the greatest, but I ordered it last week. Excellent.
Don't forget to ask how their bowling team did at the national tournament this year. They'll talk your ear off about it. It adds that touch of kitschiness -

So far so good. Spring rolls fried, disappointing but not a deal breaker. Nice menu, huge portions. The orange peel beef made a lovely presention.

It's solid. Especially after relying on Wisconsin, Lake County, and the north end of Cook County for Chinese food for so long (most places absolutely have no clue what they're doing north of here).
A decent lunch buffet too. During the week it is less than $7. It's good to see little mom & pop places with lunch buffets that are good since so many of them have been run out of business by the mediocre super buffets. Just wish parking was a little better.
Bottom line: TRY IT! Their egg rolls will kick super buffet egg rolls asses! -

It is a great Chinese place. Since last December, I have developed a Golden Wok habit.
Sorry, Michael M. I feel like we should go to the Golden Wok together and try some of my favorites. Hope that you and your wife find something that works for you.1 Previous Review: Show all »

There's two things I rate a Chinese place on that I haven't been to before: how good is their basic chicken lo mein, and is my stomach going to punish me the next day. If the place passes those two tests, then I mark it on my go-to list and start trying the menu. This place definitely wins on both counts.
Positives: The portions are very big, enough for another meal or two, making it a good buy for the money. Their hot and sour soup is good for what ails you. Orange chicken is very orangey with fresh orange slices and balances very well with the spiciness. The chicken lo mein, crab rangoon, hell everything else I've tried on the menu is solid and makes you wake up the next day going, "Man, that was pretty tasty. Let's have the leftovers for breakfast."
Only one negative: the parking situation is not good. I only pick up my orders, but there are painfully few spots in front of the place to park. I don't fault Golden Wok for the parking situation, there just isn't enough parking in general for the area. -

Far better than your average Chinese joint. Every dish has a different, unique taste. I have been to many places where everything tastes the same, but Golden Wok does not fall into this routine. Szechwan chicken, general tso, beef and broccoli, sesame chicken, all highly recommended. If you dine in, get the Plum Wine, sweet and smooth but strong!

Golden Wok is our favorite chinese restaurant in the area. We always order a soup (wanton or hot and sour) and the egg rolls (the best I've had). For entrees, we've tried alot on the menu but some of our regulars are the beef with broccoli, mongolian beef, shrimp egg foo young, and pork or beef friend rice. I've never been to the lunch buffet but I hear good things. We've dined in when we're in the mood for their hot tea and ordered delivery about a million times. Also, as a few other posters have stated the portions are HUGE. A soup, egg roll, one entree and large friend rice is more than enough for 2 people (with left overs). Its family owned and we're big on supporting small local establishments. Definitely give it a go - one of the best in the area.

Love Golden Wok. The spicy food, is actually spicy so that is good if you like spicy. We love to pick it up or have it delivered but don't actually eat there very much. Like all Chinese or Cantonese places you get a ton of food when you order.

My family has been going to this place for 20 years. it's very standard Chinese. More like a comfortable old favorite, where you always know what to expect. though it's a little too glutenous for my taste. you always get almond cookies AND fortune cookies at the end!

I have been a fan for over twelve years, since first moving into the area. I have tried various local Chinese restaurants, but am usually disappointed, or I end up wishing I had just ordered from Golden Wok. The portion sizes are plentiful, prices are good and I am always pleased with my order.

I have been ordering from Golden Wok my entire life since it is the only Chinese joint in the suburb I grew up in. It is so good though and the portions are huge. No MSG and not too much oil. I had the szechwan shrimp and crab rangoon the other night since I was out in the burbs. I must say, Golden Wok does not skimp our on large plump shrimps in the dish!! WOW! There were so many fresh gigantic shrimp in the entree that the entire portion left me with two leftover meals. Nice and spicy too. And the crab rangoon was the biggest and tastiest generous portion with HUGE lumps of crab in the filling rather than just cream cheese. The texture of the crispy skin on it was perfect and delicious. This is a small family owned joint that favors quantity AND quality at the same. Really good Chinese food, better than anything I have had in China town. You can really taste the quality!!! My fave chinese in the chicagoland area. My family used to order the dinner for four which came with Chicken Almond Ding, fried rice, and egg rolls and I remember that being just as good as my more recent meal there. The atmosphere is lacking but it is the perfect place to order carryout or delivery!
