4 reviews for Golden Rule Barbecue of Irondale
Having some time to chill in Birmingham I went to this restaurant. I was drawn in by the smoked smell - amazing! This place rocked. I got collared greens (changed my mind about collared greens forever), green beans (with pork and good), baked beans (molasses flavor, authentic) and pulled pork.
I want to return to Birmingham just for this place - and I'm not usually one for fast food. Rock on golden rule
In town for the Vintage Moto race out at Barber, and being from Portland, OR we were very excited to have some "real southern BBQ". This place was near our hotel and the front desk said it was good place.
It was okay, but not even close to being one of the top 5 bbq meals I've had in my life time. Portland has several bbq joints waaay better.
A previous review said the greens were amazing, (which is my favorite bbq side) but I didn't see them on the menu and when I asked, they said they had salad... not what I thought people meant in the south when they talk about greens.
The beans were interesting; they tasted like they had curry or cumin in them. And the slaw was decent too. But the ribs were just okay... like I said... it was all just okay... I had much higher expectation.
Oh.. and the bottled bbq sauce on the table, had high fructose corn syrup in it.... what happened to good old fashion, from scratch with REAL, whole food/spice ingredients???
Very bad BBQ. The sauce tastes like a generic supermarket brand. The pulled pork is just not very spicy; not good. Their sides and the Wonder bread that came with our order was equally disappointing. Even the sweet tea was bad here.
It was back in 2005 that I hit this place as part of a larger group.
As a newcomer to the south, this place was awesome. All the wait staff were female, almost certainly in their fifties and each got to wear a t-shirt that represented their favorite NASCAR driver - how cool is that (I'll let you be the judge!).
The place was kind of divey, but that's half the appeal. The walls are adorned with photos of college football athletes and coaches.
Thankfully, two of our party were au fait with the south, and they were able to translate between the wait staff any myself (honestly, neither could understand the other). Those two "locals" were also the ones that explained the photos on the wall.
The food was good, and I got to try out (and enjoy) new condiments - particularly soppin' sauce.
Next time I'm at Barber (Motorsports Park), this place is at the top of the list of eating establishments I want to frequent.
