10 reviews for Golden Hinde Inn & Marina
On a whim I decided to head to Pt. Reyes for the weekend. I had no place to stay and figured I would find one when I pulled into town. Everything was booked except for the Golden Hinde. It was exactly what I was looking for.
First, it's cheap. $99 for the night. Second, it was clean. I had a room with a queen bed and a view of the bay. This place is nothing special, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with it.
I. Will. Never. Be. Back.
Think disgusting, awful, smell of bleach, mold, dirty, cheap, out-dated, cold, damp, uncomfortable...

We found that only this place had a room available on July 3rd night in the entire area and the manager did not ask us to stay for 2 nights. We were glad to find any place to stay. She gave us the room for $100 and tempted us in to staying there. She was very friendly, very helpful, very patient.
We checked the room before we decided to stay. To start with, we had an awesome view on the Tomales bay. The room was above basic .. regular sized bed, fireplace, table, chairs, patio furniture, small tv, premium cable, decent bathroom & shower. However, the place looked old but it is not bad, not dirty, not disgusting. The bed was clean, the sheets were clean. Everything worked, nothing squeaked.
The breakfast is just a brown bag of 2 muffins, 2 apples, 2 juices. There is coffee in the room. This was a disappointment but .. what can you do? The views are priceless.
I don't review often but as I laid awake at 3:00am with no hope of falling back asleep on the world's hardest and oldest rusty spring mattress I couldn't help but think about the review that I was going to give this place...
First off, we were traveling with a small dog and therefore we thought this would be a nice place to stay. Nothing could have been further from the truth. We stayed in room 24 (which is pet friendly according to the website). Although, I believe the carpet had been replaced recently, the bed was clearly from the early 70's and NOTHING else had been updated in decades. Although, there was little traffic on the street this far north, there is NO privacy in this room and therefore every car that passed by the "inn" felt like it was driving over my head. The hot water ran out in less than 15 minutes, which left my girlfriend in ice cold water with a head full of conditioner. The mismatched table and chair set that came in the room clearly was donated from goodwill. The blanket on the bed looked like it has been used by every pet that had ever been in that place and our dog confirmed that suspicion by sniffing every inch of the blanket upon entry to the place. Electric heating on the floorboard was set so incredibly cold you could see your breath when you walked in... took a good hour to heat up to a decent temperature. The surprising upside was the ~20 inch recycled, grainy television which really tied the room together...
I felt like I was stuck in the hotel from the Shining and that I could be killed by an axe murdered at any point.
We paid around $138 (after taxes) for an "economical" way to stay in Tomales which ended up being the biggest waste of money I've ever spent on a hotel room. We were so disgusted we packed our things at 4:00am and drove back to our comfortable apartment in San Francisco.

I know my cheap motels, from Cottonport, Louisiana to Spokane, Washington I have stayed at my share of cheap hotels. Only in a place like Inverness would a $100 night a motel be considered cheap. But the Golden Hinde, comes through on the important cheap motel criteria 1) Is it clean? Yes. 2) Are there visible signs of vermin? No. 3) Is the location good? Yes. So for all of these factors the Golden Hinde gets stars.
Now if you are looking for down comforters and charming decor, Manka's down the street is sure to have what you want at three times the price. If you need a place to crash, and still have enough money to enjoy some oysters, this is the place.
We planned to stay one night in Point Reyes, and choosed Golden Hinde for it's low price.
I will start with downside first, no breakfest at all, and you can't find a
restaurant open for breakfest at 9am in Point Reyes, oh, yes, there is one but after 10:00am, our stomach can't wait for that long, we end up
buying bread from a bakery for breakfest.
OK, up sides now:
1. The location of the Inn is great, just by the Tomales Bay, actually as long as inside of Point Reyes, anywhere is good, but if you perfer water front, that's very neat. The Inn has private sand beach, marina, vey nice for a good walk or birding, there always all kinds of birds around the bay.
2. clean in and out
3. the room is cozy, we stay in a suite, one queen and two twin beds, and our kids love to roam from one room to the other. After a day trip, our younger kid still wanna be back to hotel.
Cheapest place in the Point Reyes area, for sure, and not too shabby. The room was clean and warm, and right on the water of Tomales Bay. It was GORGEOUS. The buildings are set back from the road, so they're really quiet. We'll go back, for sure.

What a dump. I'm not sure if all the rooms are as bad as the one we stayed in, but I feel confident in saying that this is the worst motel experience I've ever had.
I was looking for an inexpensive room in the Pt Reyes area for a weekend gettaway with my fiance. I took a chance after reading the mixed reviews and booked a room at Golden Hinde Inn. Please don't make the same mistake I did, especially if traveling with a pet. Don't waste your time or money.
We stayed in a "pet friendly room" by the road with a bathroom window that wouldn't lock. There were flies in the room; we killed about 5 or so but they kept coming. The carpet was FILTHY... like no steam-cleaner had touched it in quite a while. How gross is that? Staying in a motel room with dirty carpet? Needless to say, we didn't walk on the carpet with bare feet. Worst of all, when I removed the coverlet from the bed (as I always do), there was a dried animal pee stain on it! I went to the office and got fresh linen and we checked out in the morning. Luckily, we found the Inverness Valley Inn, which was SO much nicer. There were no views of the bay, but the pet rooms at the Golden Hinde face the road anyway.
A real bargain. Great location, rooms with views of Tomales Bay, quiet and clean. Nothing fancy here -- the rooms are a melange of 70s kitsch and some updating. We do miss the lava lamps!
Budget travelers unite. This inn is right on Tomales Bay and close to all the action that the Bay has to offer. Our room even had a view of the water for right around $100.
