This is more fun than a barrel of monkeys! Every Sunday (weather permitting) you can ride these trains between 11-3.
The train folk are so enthusiastic and friendly; their enthusiasm is contagious! And it is hard to tell who is having more fun-the adults or the kids.
Choo-choo! All aboard!

Forgotten how it feels to be as excited as a kid on Christmas Day?

Located next to Tilden Park's miniature steam trains (the Redwood Valley Railway, see my other review for more info) are the sprawling facilities of the Golden Gate Live Steamers. I was absolutely amazed at the size of their facilities, although I guess one should expect that given that they are the oldest live steam club in the country. On Sundays from noon until 3pm the club's members offer free rides on their steam and diesel trains (donations are encouraged, and I think that they are well deserved). The trains here are a bit smaller than at the neighboring Redwood Valley Railway, and most of them seem to be of the variety where you sit single-file straddling a bench that runs the length of the car. From the looks of things, they seem to have several different possible routes over their many tracks, but the day I visited with my fiance and our three nieces, they took us on a loop that was probably about 3/4 of a mile in length. This is a really great place and I think that I've figured out what I'm going to do when I retire.
