BBQ PARTIES!
Definately a good beach/park to hang out and have a good time with friends and family. Limited beach parks in seattle area and hot days in seattle calls for golden garden retreat.
One thing I don't like.. aphids jump on you when your laying in the grassy area.
Its a great place for kids.
It gives off that SoCal feeling. Soft sand, the Sound and a great view of the Olimpics what more would anyone ask for. You have the option of being with crowd or you can go up to the north end get a little more privacy. There are also poles to set up a vollyball court.
On hot days skin is in. So grab that bikini and those boardshorts and take a nice cool to cold dip in the Sound.

First let me emphasize, the company was FIVE STARS. I got to know some fabulous yelpers a little better AND bury dfens in the sand (although the sand was adequate to make boobies, but it was too grainy for the man parts). I also got some sun (complete with ankle burns) and I got to dip my feet in the icy cold water whenever I felt overheated.
And even though there were a lot of people out that day, we were able to snag a great spot with lots of space, near some logs that were perfect for those of us who forgot to bring beach towels.
However, after three beers (which I swear were NOT consumed on the beach), my ADH receptors were outta whack, not to mention there was 3 x bottle volume of fluid in my system, which meant I had to find a bathroom. I looked around and saw a large brick building and thought, "great! It's bigger than those little rooms you find at campsites; maybe it'll be an okay bathroom."
So my gentleman friend carried me piggyback to the building (thank you!), then dropped me off. I found the men's pretty easily, and I naturally thought that the women's was going to be on the other side of the building.
Wrong. (meanwhile, my bladder was getting fuller)
I walked all the way back around to the men's, then walked past to find the women's with - you guessed it - a LINE out the door.
As I was standing there, in line, heavily buzzed from the three beers and handful of tortilla chips I had consumed that day, my bladder getting ever fuller, the woman in front of me handed me a wad of toilet paper. ("What? Why? Don't you need it?") I'm so grateful that she gave up her tp for little ol' me...it turned out she didn't need it (for reasons I still don't understand), and a very thoughtful dude had gotten a bunch for us from the men's, because as it so happened, there was none left in the women's. (I was torn between subtracting a star for the bathroom upkeep and leaving it in for the awesome people that frequent this place.)
So, standing there, buzzed, bladder now FULL, with a wad of tp in my hand, I start sending text messages:
1. to dfens (only in my head because I realized he didn't have his phone): "Is there a line at the mens room? Can you guard the door for me?"
2. to Ari C: "Fuck this women's bathroom shit!"
3. to Ari C: "I need computer access!"
4. to Betsy K: "If you need the bathroom, go EARLY...there's a line."
5. to Betsy K: (I don't even remember what I said...actually, I think it was something else about needing computer access)
So finally, I get in, and I have *just enough* tp to do my business.
*RELIEF.*
Then I find, there's no GD soap.

I love Golden Gardens and do NOT use that term loosely.
A little birdie told me this used to be the cruisin'' spot back in the day.
You can view the sound, sunrise and sunset entirely.
If only you could set up camp here and have a weekend stay!!

Very cool park. What I loved about it is how man different options you have. You can:
Walk on the beach
Walk on the rocks
Walk on a sand/gravel path
Walk on a paved path
Sit on the many different picnic benches, logs, and seats that are throughout the park
Have a picnic
Grab lunch at the little food area
Go in the water
Sail
Play volleyball
Look at the turtles and ducks (that was my favorite, the turtles were so fun)
And of course........just people watch. That was fun, there is an area where the shallow water was moving quite a bit and there are rocks forming a small tidepool. There were these adorable little kids just playing in the mud building stuff, picking up rocks, splashing around.....super cute!
It was a fun place to spend a couple hours just catching up with a friend. Parking was pretty bad but we parked up on this side road that is across the street from the main lot and walked down. Not a far walk at all and there was a lot of parking up there. Super cool park! Very fun!

Tends to get too crowded for me, but it's still a great faux-beach. It does have everything- a park, a playground, water holes, picnic areas, sand, volleyball, garden, pond, the tide....and great food just down the way.
I go here several times a month and haven't written a review... so now I will. I love this place with all my heart. I go here when I am sad, to walk in the sand, reflect on my life, I go here when I am happy, to take pics, to watch the ships out at sea, skip rocks. But in the past few years I usually come with my nephew. Aunt Cardy LOVES to come here with my nephew! We usually have a plan...1. walk on the sand and look at rocks 2. bring his soccer net and unleash our inner Beckhams, complete with yelling GOAL! 3. go and look at the ducks and turtles 4. watch the trains and have the conductors blow the horn or all of the above. This place brings out the inner child in me and when I am alone there, looking out across the water, the glorious mountains in the view, I know why I love living in Washington so so much.

What's a sunny day in Seattle w/out a trip to Golden Gardens??
Unfortunately, everyone and their moms know this- which makes parking a real pain in the neck. (no exaggeration on this)
But being bumper to bumper in the parking lot for some minutes is well worth the stay!!
This past weekend had SWARMS of people. Young & Old. BBQing, Beach Volleyball playing, tossing frisbees & footballs. Sunbathing. Blasting Music. Doing all sorts of fun stuff!! It's quite the scene. :D
This place truly brings me back to college days where my group of friends would come out to enjoy the sun, bbq, and stay late to do bonfires. It's still a great place to make memories!! & can't say enough about the water view- It's amazing!!
PS. Don't forget to catch some HH at Ray's nearby or head into downtown Ballard for great little shops!

I love Golden Gardens! Every summer and a couple times in between I need to go to the GG to get my fix of Seattle Sun. The big downside here is that on a nice day it is next to impossible to find parking. Be preparred to circle the parking lots like vultures waiting on a space to open up.
If you do manage to find parking there are some nice beach areas that are usually pretty clean. Also great areas to BBQ and nice open lawns for kicking soccer ball or just relaxing in the grass. I havent had problems with bums here as I have at other parks around seattle. Maybe thats just because there are always so many people whenever I am there.
So-so off-leashed dog park..
It's a big play area but it's so big that owners gets distracted and forget to pick up after their dogs. The back area is prefect to play toss but the water system is inconvenient (you have to walk to the water area outside to fill up the milk container and bring it back in). There's lots of owners chatting to themselves. If you are new to the park.. you stand out like a sore thumb.
The park itself is crowed.
My work had it's annual picnic here and it was impossible to find parking.
Maybe if I lived closer and I didn't come on a nice day..
Then maybe I'll like it more.

I love this park...I didn't give it 5 stars only because it gets so crowded during the summer and it can be hard to find parking, so arrive early. Luckily, I live within walking distance. There is a set of stairs at the end of nw 85th that go down to the park. Next summer I am looking forward to checking out the trails.

There's rarely a weekend in summer when I don't head up to Golden Gardens for a BBQ with friends. The view is beautiful and the BBQ spots are plentiful.
The park itself has it's issues; Parking can be a pain, the sand is really dirty (your feet will be BLACK)by the end of the day), and the bathrooms are disgusting. The staff can hassle you for BBQ'ing in the wrong place some times too.
But the view of Shilshole Bay and the Olympic mountains at sunset cannot be beat. If you're looking for a place to take your dog or hold a BBQ in the summer, Golden Gardens is your place.

I'll just sum up a few thoughts up into a short list..
Gorgeous sunset views from here, truly close to, if not the best, anywhere in the city
Fire pits.
Somehow has stayed a nice beach and not gotten all freaked up and weird, and even when crowded, doesn't really feel like it.
There's a fairly better than 50% chance I was conceived here.

Okay, so the best date I've ever been on went a little something like this:
We brown bagged it on the beach with Jolly Roger Christmas Ale on an evening in November. Golden Gardens Park. Perfection!
I love this beach because it's still a beach. No cruisin', no pumps n' a bump, no nonsense. Just a beautiful beach and some fire pits for serious S'moreage if need be.
Oh, and Lil Coney is a short little walk back to the marina if you want an ice cream cone or a burger.
PS- behind that grassy bluff is the place to be if you're feeling all 'jr high' and are looking to get to 2nd base. Guys: it might just work. It's the beach.. it's ROMANTIC and, well.. chances are, we'll think it's 'cute' :)

It's the only legitimate beach option in the state of Washington, so you take what you can get when you crave water and sand. It's at least not too far from Seattle proper, decently uncrowded, the sand is so-so soft and the fire pit option is lovely. I read many a book there on summer days.
* Accessibility note: yes, easy to get on the beach and not too far to the water.
Great place to take a walk, relax and enjoy the sound and gulls. Beautiful views. Wonderful to visit on a nice dark, windy day and watch the water and seagulls. Great to visit on a sunny day also. :-) In the spring time its great to watch the ducklings going crazy and the small pond at the end of the drive.
When the weather is fairly clear, this has one of the best views of the sunset in Seattle, right over the top of the Olympic Mountains. Sometimes the hippies gather and play music, other times you'll see families and relatives having picnics. There's dogs and kids, older people and teens. It's a real beach and a good place for a get-together with friends and family. Parking can sometimes be a real bitch, but then again I guess it could always be worse. You know, with the rabid monkeys, chemical weapons and zombies. That's not what's down at Golden Gardens. Just saying it COULD be there and that would be worse than having a problem finding a place to park. So yeah...you should go to this place.
What a beautiful beach! Husband and I walked down here on a hot sunny afternoon with a few beers and sandwiches. Despite our frustrating walk ( due to my lack of knowledge of dead ends and the like) once we arrived at the beach we were able to enjoy a lovely picnic, watching the sailboats and the little kids frolicking in the water. Can't wait to have a bonfire here!

One afternoon 6 years ago, I got done with my finals and felt free like a bird, no, freeer than a bird, and thought I had all the time I want to do whatever I want and wherever I want. My ex asked me what I wanted to do, I said "I don't know, just drive, straight." And so we did, away from UW...going...driving...going...guess what I found?
That has got to be one of the most relaxing afternoon I've had. We laid there for hours, listening to the water, kids laughing around us, and poking each other.
And then there was a time I felt asleep on another ex, in the sun. Then I started dreaming about myself being suffocated. Turns out my face was buried in his chest.
Yes, it's a great place to fall asleep at.
And then...there was this other time, I lost my phone after a bonfire. After scouting in the darkness with a dinky flashlight, mystery man rowed up in a boat with mobile device in hand, and asked if I had lost my cell phone. I don't think I saw his face. Yes, fun stuff. Thank you mystery man.
OK, fine. Real review...
One of my favorite summer spots, when it's not crowded by obnoxious college kids and inconsiderate smokers. Nothing beats a relaxing afternoon with a magazine, and few bottles of cold bee...arr...water!
I love listening to the water and little kids' laughter.
Perfect place for bonfire on a good night.
I'd skip the hot dogs at the little store, I will spare you and the owner the details, but if you trust me then just don't. Have a Popsicle! ;)

If you like people, come on a hot spring/summer day when the tide is in for your typical beach fun.
If you like nature and want some alone time with a special someone, come on a cloudy day -- preferrably on a day when you know the tide is going to be out furthest. If you walk a ways towards the railroad memorial, there's a "second" beach that is revealed when the tide is all the way out. Lots of little wildlife sea critters, and not many people go over there. I've been to this part of the park only once, during a marine biology field trip in high school, and I was enchanted.
Still, even if you can't find that part of the park, this is a lovely little place. I prefer not to go when there are many loud kids, though, so I like to go on cloudy/drizzly days. Am I weird? Maybe. :)

The beach is a gem with astonishing views of the immortal landscape of mountains and water.
I haven't wandered the beaches with bonfires in the summer, so I can only speak to the winter experience of jackets, brisk winds, and mountains peeking out from the mists. There is sand here where some kind of perfect tidal position arises and pebbles in other areas with more direct positions.
One thing to watch out for is people showing up with bread. The gulls know what time it is when they see a bread bag, and everyone in the area gets a treat of white hail from above. Thanks for including me in your greasy gull squeezings festival, kids. I appreciate how you followed me around for a few minutes and brought all your gulls with you. I'm sure it'll wash out if I pony up a couple thousand dollars to get my coat drycleaned. Thanks again!

I love this place. Sure, the parking is kind of difficult, and the bathrooms are nasty nasty, but that's pretty much where the negative stops.
I've been here quite a few times, mostly for barbeques. Yes, that's right, they have grill pit thingies, plus, after you cook up some tasty kabobs, you can light a fire in one of the fire pits and dance around like tribal people. Okay, I've never done that, but I've definitely seen people who have.
People watching is amazing here, too. I saw a man holding hands with a man and a woman walking down the trail here, and I thought to myself, "I love Seattle." and then I chuckled a little bit, because I knew what they'd be doing later on that night.
The sand is good, the water is cold (but I never go into large bodies of water unless they're fresh water- people dump ashes and dead bodies in there! did you know that?!) and there's tons to do here. They have volleyball courts, a trail, picnic benches.... bring a frisbee or football and you have entertainment for hours.
A great place for groups- and all for free! Also a nice place to come in the summer and just lay out in your bathing suit....
Bonus..... you can drink here. I mean, it's not really "allowed" but no one's going to stop you unless you are acting ridiculous, lapping up the sand and jumping through fire pits.... so just don't do that.
I recommend wholeheartedly- but bring your own toilet seat covers and don't forget to wear shoes to the bathrooms.

Hilariously I'd forgotten to write a review for this place despite how many times I've been here. Maybe its because it's not listed in most travel books and people seem to guard it like a big secret. And rightly so.
We found out about this place from a nice girl in a parking lot. Wine in one hand, folding chairs in the other, we inquired where she was headed and she was nice enough to point out where the park was. We headed out immediately.
This place reminds me of that beach from "The Karate Kid". You know, the one where they have the bonfire and all the cool CA kids are living it up with their boom boxes. It just has that vibe when it's crowded. Which is highly amusing.
I love to watch the kite surfers and kayakers. And wander to more secluded areas to snuggle and watch the sunrise or set. I even got to watch some crazy lady swimming in the middle of winter and counting to herself. And I did get to enjoy roasted goat on this beach, which was great, but not as good as all the watermelon I gorged on.
Love this park. And boy does it impress visitors.

We went to Golden Gardens today and had a great time. We started out our day by playing in the sand and meeting friends. A sandy beach in Seattle? Yep, just filled with pasty white Seattleites in the summer!
Bring your cooler full of "beverages" and head on down here in the summer for a picnic and a bonfire. You have to reserve the picnic tables in advance, but the bonfire pits are first come first served. Nothing like some s'mores after a long day at the beach.
And don't forget to check out the kids playing aqua-engineers in the tributary at the entrance to the beach. They are full steam ahead with their buckets and shovels, moving piles of sand from here to there, damming up water here and diverting water there. But, wait for it, the best part is when a kid upstream dams up the water and pisses off all the kids down stream and there are full on 8 year old debates regarding water-rights. Ahhh Seattle....

It's funny that I had to move from So. California to Seattle to get a tan, but I did. I was jobless last summer and I didn't venture around much due to my lack of Yelp intervention. The beach was free and close to my house so I was here often. It felt good to walk out onto the sand and not be the only person with blaringly translucent white skin. Nice views on blue days, good breeze to fend off the heat. I always ended up here during the week days, so it was never too crowded. Picnic areas, grittier sand than I was use to, grassy areas and restrooms. It's a good beach to visit.

Grab boyfriend/girlfriend/partner/friend, that bottle of bubbly out of your fridge, hop in the car, make a quick stop at Essential Bakery or Cafe Besalu for your morning pastry, and make the quick, easy drive to Golden Gardens.
Go out to the very end of the beach, near the tracks. Logs washed up onto the beach make great seats for a gorgeous mid-morning view of Elliot Bay, the islands, and the Olympics.

This is far and away one of my favorite parks in Seattle. Not just because it's where friends and myself used to have bon fires and underage drink back in the day. But because it's just such a neat little secluded spot. And by secluded I don't me from the public. Go here in the summer time and it's guaranteed to be packed. But by secluded I mean from what I call "city feel". It's stuck off at the end of Ballard around the corner behind the trees in an almost wonderland. When you are hanging out on the beach, especially near the far end, if you didn't know how close you were to downtown Seattle, for all you knew it could be somewhere in the San Juans. There aren't a ton of spots like this in the city.
It's a fun summertime hangout for a night time bon fire, game of volleyball, or simply relaxing. I'd take this place over Alki 100 times out of 100. It's cleaner, quiter, less crowded, and just better all around.
Summer is nice, but my favorite times to visit are when it's less crowded in the spring or fall. It's one of the best places to take a nice calming stroll all by your lonesome when you just want to get away from that crazy city life.

I could go on and pretty much write the same glowing review everyone else has written about his place. Yes it's great, a nice place to relax and hang out with friends. There is water and sand and fire pits, oh my! Though I won't say it's a beach, I can't, the San Diegian in me won't let me. So besides all the wonderful things that have already been said about Golden Gardens I must restate a few of the bad ones:
1.) The parking is very limited, and the lot is a huge cluster f*&k, if you are impatient like I am you may end up just going home instead of driving around for another 30 minutes looking for a spot.
1.1) The upper parking lot is 75% closed/blocked off so this makes parking even more limited right now.
2.1) The sand is dirty, there is broken glass and rusted nails all over the place so if you go bare footed you will need to watch your step.
2.2) The sand will stain your feet black like there's no tomorrow and no matter how much soap and water you use it won't clean it off until you scrub them with steal wool, ok I kid on the steel wool part but you do need to scrub the heck out of them to get it off, LUSH's Ocean Salt worked wonders on them for me.
2.3) The sand is HOT in the summer and can burn the bottom of your feet if you aren't careful.
3.) The bathrooms, yes I know it's a park and they aren't meant to be nice but they are pretty bad.
By any means please don't let these things deter you just be prepared for them to help make your day visit to Golden Garden's a pleasant experience.

I'm specifically reviewing the off leash dog park at Golden Gardens. After moving to Ballard this was one of my favorite dog parks. It is large, there is varied terrain for the dogs, benches for owners, lots of fresh water, sunny and shady areas. What isn't to love about it? Well, in the fall and winter it turns into a big swampy mess. I don't know if there is a way to prevent this with better drainage or something, but it makes the park nearly unusable for half the year. Greenlake and Magnuson dog parks somehow manage to maintain a more solid footing given the same materials (dirt, wood chips) throughout the year. The off leash community is pretty good about "chipping" in and spreading more wood chips around several times a year, but it doesn't prevent the marsh. Give this place a chance in the summer months.

The cops kick everyone out at 10pm, and are pretty much gone by 11. Scope out the situation, and you can have an entire gorgeous beach, complete with bonfire, all to yourself. There's usally even leftover firewood from the evening's revellers. Bring a date, or some friends, some marshmallows and some beer, and you have the perfect night.
Just don't park in the lot, which is fenced off around the same time the cops leave. I've seen people get stuck in there before. It looked crappy.
edited to add: if you want solitude, or to just get away from the high-school kids, just walk down the beach. It curves around, and there are a lot of lovely little sandy spots and weather-beaten trees, covered in last summer's romantic graffiti, to sit in.

This place use to be DOPE, now it's just pretty awesome. Seattle Parks & Rec. make sure you don't bring in firewood and pallets to burn at your bon fire now which is smart but sad. We use to be able go to QFC and steal some pallets and have a little gathering down at Golden G's. Oh well.
Played in a volleyball league down there this last summer and despite the glass in the sand it was awesome. In relation to other Seattle beach spots, other than Alki, this place is pretty great.

This is one of my favorite parks ever. That could possibly be because I got married on the beach here. But even if it weren't for that, I'd think it was great.
The day was perfect. Not a cloud in the sky. Frolicking on the lawn and in the sand in my very simple dress and ridiculously long veil was sublime. I felt like a butterfly. And my favorite part was on a little bridge over the wet lands where we had our first glance after not seeing each other for a whole day. Everyone cried. Including my groom.
If you have your wedding here, rent the whole lawn, but have the ceremony on the beach in the northernmost tip of the park. Warn your guests about the parking situation, and have some brave, patient souls save a few spots close by for the wedding party and such. That being said, force everyone who is helping you set up to wear sunblock. Late July is notoriously sunny even in Seattle and if it weren't for the parasols my Maid of Honor thankfully brought I'd have also been red as a lobster. Oh and time the quiet moments for when the train is not going by.
If your affair will be a low key, relaxed one then consider renting the beach house for the reception. And certainly consider renting as a back-up in case of inclement weather. It's big enough for a good group and besides the concrete floor, I would have gone for that, if only for the price. It was extraordinarily cheap as far as wedding rentals go.
As for the other beach goers, it added to the ambiance for me. After all, a wedding is about announcing to the world that we are committing to each other, so what better place to do that than in front of the world at a beautiful outdoor setting?
