This is a cute diner not too far from my new apartment. My fiance and I have been going there at least every other weekend since moving to the area. Is it a diner geared more toward retirees? Sure. Doesn't mean the food is bad or the service sucks.
In fact, we've always gotten great service there. The owner's really nice and always smiles and says hello when we come in. We're always seated right away and service has been pretty fast and very friendly.
As for the food? It's pretty good. We've only ever ordered breakfast, but we enjoy it thoroughly. My fiance orders the meal with 2 pancakes, eggs, bacon, and sausage. Yummy. I always order 2 eggs sunny side up (my favorite) with a side of dry toast. It comes with some potatoes which are also yummy. It's making me hungry just writing about it, but I'm doing my best to be good and not go down there.
We've had no problems at any point there. I don't really get the negative and whiney reviews, and there's nothing 'horrible' about it. Having performed at the next door retirement home on many occasions with the choir in high school, I can pretty much safely say that it doesn't smell like that at all. -

I just walked by Golden Cup the other day and I realized it was boarded up, so I thought I would send my tribute to the Yelp-iverse.
I used to live across the street from Golden Cup when I had my first solo big-girl apartment in Chicago. I can't tell you how many hungover breakfasts I had with my friends at Golden Cup. The plates never matched and the service was crotchety at times, but they had great coffee and even better english muffins.
It did start to slide in quality for a while, but it makes me so sad to see it boarded up. It's truly the end of an era.
Golden Cup, I will miss you and all the memories I shared with my friends wihle enjoying your corned beef hash and egg special. -

This is one of the worst places in the city I have been to!
1. There were 2 servers on the floor, and about 7 vacant tables. The server told us he was too busy to clean our table and that we had to clean it ourselves.
2. Our food took literally 40 minutes for four plates of bacon, eggs, pancakes and sausage. 15 min of the 40 minutes were of our food waiting on the counter. When we asked our server about our food, he looked directly at the counter (where our food was waiting) and said, "No, I have no idea what is taking so long". Needless to say, our food was pretty cold
3. We were not checked up on once, unless we stopped the waiter ourselves
4. Our coffee and water wasn't refilled once
5. Our bill was $60 for the tinniest portion of breakfast I have ever seen (IHOP even has bigger portions!)
I still can't get over how horrible that was!
DO NOT GO HERE!!! There are much better diners in the city that's only a few blocks down from Golden Cup -

Now I remember why I stopped coming here!
I was hungry and had some time to kill before my prescription was ready so I walked up to Golden Cup. I took a seat and my server greeted me with "do you need a menu?" Now, I've only been here a handful of times, and the last time was over a year ago, so I was a bit caught off guard. Mind you he asked in a very polite manner.
I ordered a green tea and perused the menu. I settled on hashbrowns with cheese and a side of Greek toast. Here is why it gets 3 stars:
1) Tea confusion. My hot water came with a bag of peppermint tea, which I don't care for (the wrapper was green, the tea was not). Turns out they don't have green so I settled on Chamomile.
2) My Greek toast was wheat. I do not care for wheat bread, I would've preferred regular white toast had I known that up front.
3) My meal cost $9.15, kind of steep for 2 sides and a hot tea. That may explain why the place was deserted.
4) I got a generous portion of hashbrowns, which was a plus. My server was a bit thrown by my request for hashbrowns with cheese, he asked if I wanted the cheese *on* my hashbrowns. Um, yes please.
5) Service was friendly
I've always been confused as to why this place advertises dinner, it closes at 4. That's really early for dinner, even for the blue hairs. The place is up for sale so I'm not sure how long it will be around.
Bottom line: Good food and good service, but overpriced in my book.Listed in: Closing Time, Greasy spoons

This review is about the liquor store attached to the restaurant. Go here before Sushi Para so you can pre-game before BYOB at your table. The prices here are reasonable and they had a great selection of beer. We got a Magic Hat 12 pack for three people because the sixer from Binny's was going to run out if we had to wait 45 minutes for a table. We don't play games.
Enjoy your sushi. -

I have to say that I am somewhat surprised by the lack of enthusiasm for the Golden Cup. On the other hand, the type of people who seem to frequent it aren't really the type of people I would expect to be yelping. And I am A-OK with that.
True, there is nothing very surprising or outstanding about this place -- except for the fact that it has always been consistent: big portions of good food, relaxed and friendly service, comfortable, inexpensive.
I love having a place so close by where I can have a quiet brunch, where the customers are of all different ages, where the owner sits by the door and says 'hello' and 'goodbye', servers who don't attempt to be smiley, and where I don't have to overhear Shiny People talking about how wasted they were the night before while they slurp weak Bloody Marys.
In fact, don't go here. Stay away. It's not worth it for you. -

Been here a few times and liked it, but my most recent visit was horrible, so I'm not sure I'll go back. The last visit, my egg white omelette was yellow and fluffy (hence not an EGG WHITE omelette) and the hungover 17 year old waiter got an attitude and told me "they must have cooked it too long." Last time I checked, cooking egg whites too long turned them brown, not yellow...and I get your hungover...but that's not my fault - so get the order right!
My crappy omelette ended up being around $15...just an overall bad experience.
Since I've only had one bad experience, I may give it another try... -

It's just a great breakfast diner. It's not an artistic expression on your plate or an taste explosion on your palette...it's just good pancakes, eggs, sausage, etc. The guy who runs the front is friendly and makes a real effort to speak to the elderly solo diners (widowers, I can imagine). Be patient with the older lady waitress...she needs reminding but it's not a big deal.
It's a good place to roll into for pancakes in the morning! -

This is a basic, solid diner with basic, solid diner food. Nothing fancy, no ups, no extras. The food is good but not great, but that's a good thing: when all the other Lincoln Park diners are packed, you can always get a seat at the Golden Cup!
The service is very attentive and the staff is very friendly, which is only reasonable for a place that is usually nearly empty. If I have time to wait, I'll go elsewhere, but when I'm in a hurry, this is the joint to visit! -

Ahhh the good ol' days. Back when I used to live in LP, I'd hit this place up nearly every weekend. Back then, it was always the house special: eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns and a side of toast. It also helped that it was a straight shot down the alley from my old apartment. At that point in time the Golden Cup would've easily earned a 5 star rating.
Fast forward to the present day, where I haven't lived in LP in three years. Now that I am with J, I thought that I'd take her there for a nice, simple-but-good bfast and relive the good ol' days of eating the delectable house special. To my dismay, it wasn't even close to being the same. To help illustrate my point on the downfall of the GCup, here's a quick historical breakdown of how things were in the past and how they were when we went.
Service:
Past: Quick service, food in 10 minutes tops!
Present: 5-10 minutes just for the server to come over and ask us if we wanted coffee. Another 10 to take our order, and 20 to get served. The worst part is there were only 2 other tables occupied while we were there.
Food:
Past: Absolutely delicious! Hot, cooked perfectly and just the right amount of food.
Present: Everything was warm to cool. On top of that, the eggs were overcooked, the sausage was dry and the bacon was raw. The fact that I was shorted a piece of bacon actually turned out to be a good thing!
Ambiance:
Past: Great place to grab a quick bfast, catch an inning or two of the Sat. or Sun. baseball game and watch the variety of people stroll in to have a great meal. Plus, the window display text read: "dilevery" and "staeks". (Think Lorraine's Diner and the "Eegs") Classic!
Present: No one was in the restaurant (Although they did fix the window display text) No baseball game and no newspapers to read. Plus, they fixed the window display. Oh well, probably for the best.
I could go on, but I am tired from having to re-live old memories within the experiences of the new. In the end, if you're looking for a decent meal without having to go to a place like the Golden Nug., then this place might do. -

It's not the same since the remodel (hunter green and burgundy? why?) and change of ownership (only open until 4 p.m.? what gives?), to be sure, but as far as diner fare goes, it's pretty standard. The best part is that soup is included with most lunch items.

Standard diner, good mellow brunch crowd on the weekends. Big portions, if you're into that kind of thing.

Good breakfast food for a decent price. Lots on the menu, especially the lunch and dinner menus. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner and day long.

Ok my omelot was huuuuge! I couldn't finish it, had to pack it up and bring it home. They don't make them the way I like it but I'll probably go back again to try some lunch food. Which was fine but overall it was decent diner food. And yes there is a funny old lady who happens to be the light of our day cuz she was our waitress. She was sweet and was on top of everything. Prices are cheap and within means so go for it. And they have this big ass wall of headshots of famous people who've eaten there right before you walk in. I believe we didn't know anyone but Oprah lmao.

This is a great all american breakfast. Its not going to be pretty when you get your plate but it will taste good. I had a basic potatoes, bacon, eggs and toast. I left feeling full and happy. The waitress was friendly and reminded me of what I would consider a diner watiress to be. I have been here twice and will most likely be back.

I totally agree with Christina B. This place isn't fancy, but it is a good ol fashioned diner where you can sit down and have a nice breakfast. It's especially good if you don't want to wait 30 minutes to be seated a half block away at Orange where all the hungover Lincoln Parkers wait to eat their sugar coated, gooey breakfast food.

This is an excellent diner, and is one of the most friendly places on the planet. I've been coming here regularly for the past several years, and the atmosphere is so laid-back and relaxing. It's a great place to take your friends for reasonably priced food. The portions are VERY generous, and you get all the coffee you can drink.
My favorite dishes are the chicken caesar pita, the gyro sandwich, the Texas chili omelette, and the Polish sausage omellette. Every meal comes with soup, and I recommend the Navy Bean and the Chicken soup.
This is one of those rare family-owned restaurants that you always hope will stay in business. The owner greets every customer as they walk through the door, and the waiting staff will always recognize you.
It really doesn't get much better than this. -

Golden Cup is your standard diner. They have a pretty good breakfast, and they have the usual desserts behind the glass display. This diner tends to not get as crazy as the other ones nearby. A bonus if you're feeling lazy is they offer free delivery within 3 blocks.

if you are super hungry, hungover, or a combination of the two this place may be for you. huge portions, but not exactly the most tasty food i've ever had. the eggs are a pretty safe bet. its a pretty standard diner, but if you're in the area you may just want to go to deli boutique across the street for a breakfast sandwich or pastry.
