The Golden Apple is one of those old-style diners that always remind me of an IHOP. You know the type, with the multi-page menu, lots of breakfasts, lots of booths, and waitresses that should all be named "Flo." This one is as good as any, and with very friendly service. Good omelets, good soup, good sandwiches, and a nice neighborhood feel.

I think the name is Golden Apple, anyway. There are a lot of similar places, all with "Golden" in the name: Golden Nugget, Golden Cup, Golden House, etc. I tend to get them confused.

Not super cheap; maybe nine or ten bucks a head by the time you are out the door, but not bad, and you'll be full. Lincoln Avenue at Wellington and Southport, across from that big church that you can see from miles around.

For those like me that group up in a SUPER small town with diners, it's nice to have Golden Apple down the street.

It's such a cute diner with the nicest servers and owners.  You will always get seated immediately, and there will be a waitress there to ask for your drinks the second you take your jacket off.  They are super quick!  The food selection is pretty good, I wish more places would add a bit more for us vegetarians, but until then there are strawberry crepes!

It's open 24 hours which is awesome for those late nights you are craving hash browns.  And I love any place that will give me a sucker on the way out.

Yay! My friend and I ventured out of the dorms to go here late Sunday night (1 am) for a midnight snack and had a great time.

Our waitress Mary was so sweet. Food was fast, delicious and cheap. I got the biscuits and gravy, he got a cheeseburger and I believe we paid about $12 total.

I absolutely love places that are, first and foremost, cheap, and secondly, open 24 hours. So it was a great combo.

My one complaint was that although they accept credit cards, you have to spend at least $8. All in all, though, a neat little joint.

Showed up around 3am ish for some post drunk pre crash grub and had fun waiting for a to go order. Seriously. Stacy Y and myself plopped down at the counter to peruse the menus. Got some poppers and water to tide us over until our order was ready. Poppers were awesome - the cream cheese variety, my fave. Our waitress was super sweet. The manager dude was really funny. Apparently our drunken mugs are now on the Golden Apples facebook (although, not confirmed b/c I don't facebook). Got the grub home and got down to business. I had the eggs benedict. Pretty good. Sampled the gyro omelet with feta. Seriously - nothing I would ever order sober, but it was delish! Price was just right. I will definitely go back. Love the bowl of dumbells at the register. Sorry for taking like a dozen.

I was diggin this place. Good prices, huge menu, nice staff.

Got eggs benedict cause its my breakfast diggs. Hash browns were nice and crispy on the outside. Benedict was good, hollandaise a little vinegary, only complaint is that the eggs were a little undercooked. But it filled me up and made me happy so it's all good.

All in all....Its exactly what it looks like it is. If your expecting some amazing high class dining experience don't bother going there.

Don't know if it was the time of day that endeared this place to me (funny how things looks better at 4am with your beer goggles on!) but the Golden Apple did it for me the other night since I had seemingly ignored those hands on my watch that should have told me to head home long before!

Friendly waitress, super friendly owner type guy behind the cash register, and bus help who kept our coffee cups full and hot. A girl can ask for nothing more!

Now the food is never going to hit gourmet status- I mean, we are talking cheese fries, patty melts and some Mexican egg dish that we scarfed down in no time flat- but when you are starving and the sun is soon to rise- places like the Golden Apple are beacons in the night.

And how about this? Even the bathrooms were clean. And our bill was cheap, cheap cheap. I did wonder about the sign that is hanging that says "Now serving beer and wine". Yeah. Just what we didn't need!

Loved the old school vinyl booths, the crazy neon lights and all the local "flavor" that was happening around us. Now I want to go back and try their pancakes as they looked and smelled delicious from the next table over.

Oh, and here's a bonus- did I mention plenty of free parking? Ha!. At that time of the morning- you can pretty much park anywhere you want and it's the one time of the day you don't have to pay those darn meters! Golden Apple I'll be back!

"Hi Sweetheart..."

I wish I knew...
why diner coffee,
is a strange color of milky blue...
even in the casing of a sturdy, porcelain mug.
Or why the smell of burnt pots,
from years and years of use,
has a  strange, comforting effect.

Ancient waitresses,
with red lipstick and crows feet for miles...
call me "sweetheart,"
frat-boy drunks and trixies strewn about...
Wonder, does she call them that, too?
I wouldn't.

A fried egg heaven,
with 'shrooms and bacon to boot,
Has me forgetting the flat Diet Coke,
that aches for bubbles,
a life full of bouncier carbonation.

Short stack on the side, please...
Yes, there we go.
As any savory diner delight,
must be accompanied by sweet...
cakes of squishy syrup,
running amuck with butter.

Sweetheart, yes.

Diner is as diner does, eh?  This place is just that, A-OK.  A sassy server, tables of drunkards (but not too many) and some regulars couple with a menu of breakfast items and some sammies and you're good-to-go.

Bad coffee?  Check.  (Granted, if it was my first cup in the A.M., I might sing a different tune, but at 12:30 a.m., it just didn't cut it.)

Omelets?  Check.  (Bonus points for being able to get a short stack on the side instead of the usual suspect of toast.)

Veggie wrap for me?  Check.

It did the trick, although I never quite figured out how my feta turned pink.  Perhaps this is just one of those places that is better when you've been imbibing.  I had not, so I guess I'm jaded.

Check it, there's a baby parking lot out back (if you're in the driving condition) and a pie case in the front.  Yup, a diner for sure.

Nine p.m. on a Sunday night and my best friend is in town with a rental car. She wants pie and I want bacon. She's driving and has been here before.

Parking on a side street, we push open the door and look at smiling faces steeped in conversation, and men catching dinner after their work shifts, all of whom appeared gray under the diner and florescent lighting. My bestie and I stop to stare at the pies sitting in the brightly lit case by the door. So many options. Oh so tempting.

We sit by the window where the street light conflicts with how the restaurant light casts shadows on our menus. We open our trifold menus with many options. My friend grabs the fries and a slice of Oreo pie. Me? Two eggs over-easy, two bacon, two pancakes and heck...there might have been two sausage. Our waitress was a doll who dolled up for the weekend by putting on some extra jewelry. She liked our necklaces.

My friend liked her Oreo pie and her wavy cut fries. I liked my late-night breakfast and grease. The waitress kept checking on us. She was a total sweetheart as you would expect.

Nice people at night in a 24-hour diner that felt safe. After all, it was a Sunday night. I liked it. Blessed are the quiet nights of catching up with friends in a place that could potentially know my name.

While I ate here on Sunday night I was fantasizing, I have to admit.

No, not about what you think I was fantasizing about (especially if you were part of the Yelp Late Night Dining Crew that was there with me).  I was off in a dream world trying to imagine other late night dining establishments and how much better the food and service they have is. Especially Melrose Restaurant.  That place is hott!

I know, I was mentally cheating on Golden Apple while still with it.  I'm a terrible diner.

But you have to understand, I'm a bad foodie (a foodie when it comes to bad food).  I am literally attracted to bad food so I'm very picky about diner quality fare.  And Golden Apple doesn't come close to preparing good bad food.  I gave it every chance to impress me as well.  I ordered all of my favorites.

The feta cheese omelet was prepared in some sort of oil that took all of the taste out of the eggs.  The cottage cheese I got as a side (it really does compliment the feta omelet - trust a bad foodie) was STALE!  The pancakes were edible (in the words of someone else, "I didn't have to choke them down.") and having a full plate of pancakes as a side option was great.  But let's just say that I had a big appetite coming in, but looking at Sarah B.'s hash browns, made me lose it.

I do have to give this place credit for trying to have good service.  I've never had my tea refilled twice before.  And a good cup of tea is good to fantasize over.  Especially if it's an A cup of T.

Sooo. My boyfriend and I frequent Golden Apple quite often, most notably after midnight when nothing else is open. The location is perfect, about a block from my house.  Suprisingly diet-friendly (if you try).  The omelettes made with egg-beaters are a little thin on the eggs and sometimes dry--but they are superfilled with ingredients.  Service is suprisingly fast, which is exactly what you need at 4 in the morning.  They are great about keeping your coffee and water glasses filled. The waitresses are pretty nice. Fruit cups, not so great, as they are not very fresh.  Dum-dums at the checkout.  Amazing.

I am dumbfounded at the reviews hear. First, anyone who thinks there is decent food in this place has no business writing reviews. Baked goods are overpriced and stale, everything is from the can, wait staff needs to retire-they are not helpful and don't give a f***. I had Thanksgiving dinner here once and it was so cold it took 2 trips to the micro in back to warm it up. I was sick the next day.
I have encountered various things (like rodent turds) in my breakfast twice. The atmosphere that people tralk about is generated by people who have no where else to go (read-no life)
Nick, the owner is a nice enough guy, and I've been going here for 7 years, but I try to stay away from the food and just get coffee.

I love greasy spoons and this is the quintessential spot in Lakeview. I've only ever been here after midnight, but I've never had a dish I didn't like.

Open 24 hours, they have breakfast items, dinner items and every item in between. I usually get a grilled ham and cheese sandwich and a cup of coffee.

It's my go-to spot when the bars close down and I like to be unhealthy before crashing for the night.

This is just your average diner, but cheaper than some I have seen. I had the biscuits and gravy with eggs ($6.55) and my friend had the veggie omelet (~7.50). To quote Jim Carrey in 'Liar Liar': I've had better. Not enough biscuits under the gravy. However, the waitress who's husband 'is an asshole' was pretty friendly.

I'm just going to say this: I love Golden Apple.  I come here at least a few times a week, sometimes for a meal and other times just to get coffee.

Whether I'm here with just a couple of people or with a huge group, the service is always great.  Water and coffee are refilled frequently, and the food never takes too long to arrive.

Some favorites:
Soups (particularly split pea or cream of chicken and rice)
Salami and Egg sandwich on a bagel
Grilled cheese on wheat (with bacon, if you're into that)
Mushroom burger with blue cheese dressing
Pie (ask the waitresses, and they'll tell you which ones are the freshest)

In addition, parking has never been a problem (granted, I've rarely been in before 10 pm).  Overall, a great place to eat some good diner food and drink coffee at a decent price.

I went here last night looking for a low key laid back place to eat. Just the ticket. Old man Willy was chatting it up the owner behind the bar. Big vinyl cushioned stools, checkered tiles,  green neon and florescent lights discoloring your food as you eat, locals reading newspapers, Cubs games on a 19" Tv mounted high above the grill window, and endless cups of generic coffee. Gotta love it, man. This place is great for a genuine diner atmosphere; like you warped back to 1978 or the sixties, somewhere in that time span. However, if you are looking for quality food, I wouldn't count on it here. Go drunk, it'll be better.

I am so sick of all the breakfast places that try to jazz up every dish until the point where it's just disgusting.  For example, take a typical plate of french toast...Bongo Room or Le Peep have to inject it with peanut butter, top it with quail eggs, and serve it on a bed of fried okra.  Um, no thanks.

I hit up the GA almost every other Saturday for breakfast.  I get a simple yet delicious meal of  two eggs over medium, crispy almost jerky-like bacon, hash browns, and then split an order of french toast with the BF.  It couldn't be better and it's always done right.

As others have said, the soups are so good, and I tend to hit up the grilled cheese when I've got that craving-something-lunchy-in-the-a.m.-type feeling.  Oh, and the turkey club on wheat is another good one.  As are the crinkle cut fries.  Yum.

EVERY CUSTOMER HERE IS DRUNK

Or old, or has been coming here for decades, or some combination of all of the above.  I was just in the first category during my inaugural visit, on my way back from the face-melting Journey / Heart / Cheap Trick concert.

What is there to say about this place?  It's one of those greasy spoon type of places where you wake up the next day and shake your head in disbelief asking yourself, "Did I really eat a giant mediocre plate of 3 eggs, 3 slices of bacon, 3 sausage links, hash browns, and pancakes at 2AM?"

I can't imagine going here sober, because even after a few beers the food was pretty bad.  Indeed the universal law that states 'the more items on a menu, the worst the food is', still applies.

Man, I've been coming to this place for something like 7 years now. Whenever we can't figure out a place to go eat, we pick Apple. It's definitely nothing special as far as the food goes, but it's just one of those places where you feel at home in. Maybe that's also because I've been going there for 7 years.

My biggest problem with this place is the late night drunks. I mean, I understand that's probably the sole reason this place exists (well, that and Sunday brunch), but when all the bars empty, sometimes you get the most annoying crowds of loud and belligerent 20 somethings while you're just trying to have a nice late night chat and cup of coffee with a friend. Sometimes it's amusing though. :)

The servers are awesome, always have been. Those ladies definitely add to the "make yourself at home" vibe. Substitutions? No problem! They're always accommodating.

In 7 years, will I still be coming here? Probably.

Diners - especially back in Philadelphia - are usually a great cross-section of the cultural/socioeconomic make-up of a city, especially by night - drunk college students, old dudes who just got off the night shift, you get the picture.  As many have already mentioned, Ira Glass did some time here for a segment - and you'll get why immediately when you walk in the place.

Green vinyl booths, greasy grilled cheese with french fries, drunk patrons, and endless entertainment.  I spent one of my nights here and it was worth every minute.  Of course we're not talking culinary excellence here, but damn, is the coffee strong.

Must have hit the place on a bad day. I awoke with a vision of a warm Belgian Waffle dancing above my bed, so I needed to take care of this "fix." I came to the Golden Apple because I had never been, and I recall it being the subject of "This American Life", which intrigued me. Lastly, I knew I could find a Belgian Waffle here. And I could sit outside.

A little historical note on these "Golden" places. I believe that a long time ago, these may have all been "Golden Nugget" franchises. Then, as they were sold, the names of several of them changed. Golden Apple. Golden Angel. And there are still Golden Nuggets around, too. Rumor has it someone tried to change one of them to "Golden Shower", but lacking a steady stream of customers, it failed :-)

Anyway, things at Golden Apple got off to a good start on a sunny weekday morning. I was greeted by the host, given a Sun Times to read, and a seat outside by myself. There were only two or three occupied tables inside, so it wasn't any less lonely outside. Shortly after I sat down, two other tables were seated, one an elderly couple, the other a mom and two kids. That's when I apparently became invisible and everything went down hill from a service stand point. Had to ask for water and utensils (the others already had them), got waited on last, and served my food last. Not the worst thing that could happen, but this server was probably one of the most unpleasant and unfriendly I've had in a diner in a good long while.

The waffle was fine. The accompanying scrambled eggs were cold. The bacon (aka meat candy) was nice and crisp, and there were three big slices. And a good deal for $7.25. The coffee was that bad diner "sock juice", as the French often refer to American coffee. I can put up with that if everything else is better.

But that overall experience combined with my decision to drive and be out there with, well, Chicago drivers, in lieu of walking or taking the train, just left me kind of crabby! Think I will stick with the Golden Angel for my future  waffle cravings.

Like most 20-somethings in the service industry (read: low responsibility) I drink a fair amount. I find it very silly to brag about how much one drinks because in most cases (unless you're Charles Bukowski or something) you're just trying to impress someone with your supposed drinking prowess....which you're probably hamming up anyways. Real drinkers claim to drink way less than they actually do. Respect.

But I digress, when I do go out to drink I find it's a good idea to have a full meal in my stomach. Golden Apple is very nearby a slew of decent bars and they are open round the damn clock. A grilled cheese and tomato sammich with a side salad and french fries will give your tummy a good sturdy coating of grease (not TOO much) and you'll be ready to start throwing back whiskey sours and prairie fires and such.

They have a lot of booths with seats so squashy you'll feel like you're about to tuck into a meal in the La Brea tar pits. Service is as nice as you can expect 24-hour diner help to be... but do you ever look at your waitress and think, "You've had a hard life, haven't you?" Yeah...

The Best Damn Golden-something or other Restaurant Around!

Apparently this place was at one time a Golden Nugget (that's no apple on top, although Gregula likes to say "it's applesauce" :)) and the decor mostly remains.  Unlike the Golden Nugget, Angel, whatever - this place is clean, well run and have the nicest waitresses around!  My favorite waitress is Bridget (the one with the short spikey blonde hair). Not only will she give you great customer service, she is hilarious and will also entertain you with song and dance - for no extra charge ;)!

The food is reasonably priced and tasty to boot!  Best value is the $6.99 meals available from 11a-9p, but everything on the normal menu is not much more pricey.  I love almost everything they serve, the french onion and chicken noodle soups are awesome and you can't go wrong with their pasta dishes or turkey burgers.  You can get mixed fruit as a side instead of fries and the fruit is a VERY fresh mix of pineapple, strawberry and melon!  And if you are little bit of a picky eater, the cooks are willing to make tiny substitutions - very nice. Only thing I have been disappointed in was their veggie burger but I won't hold it against them :D.

Bathrooms are dinky and the doors swing in rather than out making it an adventure to use but I won't take that fifth star away from the Golden Apple because they are just that awesome.

Plus, there is a chance that you may run into Count Gregula and myself on a random evening before taking him to work!

You're here for the atmosphere, to hear the cranky old ladies arguing in the corner, or the drunk kids getting theatrical after a few too many shots. Maybe you're here because Ira Glass made the Golden Apple out to be a slice of Americana or, more likely, because it's walking distance from your Saturday night buzz.

You're here for the show.  Certainly not the food, which is pretty forgettable. But after 2 a.m., your standards have dropped a few rungs.

I will forever be indebted to the Golden Apple for showing me what REAL chocolate chip pancakes taste like.  Never again will I accept chocolate chip pancakes that are not many in number and hidden under what must have been a half a can of whipped cream.  God, those pancakes were good.

I've been coming here for about six years now, and I've never been outrightly unhappy with my order.  Sure, some of the meals are better than others, but nothing I've had has been bad.  I've stumbled here after a drunken night at Schubas', and I've come here at 6am, for a sober breakfast, and I've been here in the afternoon, just studying or reading, and every time I've been treated in a warm and courteous manner.

The Golden Apple definitely holds its own in the realm of greasy diners, but it manages to exceed the low standards just enough to make it one of the better diners in Chicago.

The french toast was fantastic!  The veggie omlette was great.  The hash browns were not so good, they did not tast like homemade hash browns and I only ate a few bites.  So all in all, I would say yes I recommend this place, as far as diners go it is very good.  The prices are not cheap, but nowadays even diners are not cheap, they are average.  You can get breakfast foods 24/7, and you can get pancakes instead of the hash browns.

It's going to be hard for me to fully express how much I love the Golden Apple.  I feel bacon-grease-scented tears welling up just thinking about the the joy I take in eating the 2222 Breakfast (too much imagery?).

Let me enumerate the many reasons for my Apple-infatuation:

1. 24 Hours at the Golden Apple  - If you haven't listened to the classic This American Life episode recorded over the course of a full day at the GA, do so now.  You will laugh, you will cry, you will have a mad craving for pancakes. http://www.thislife.or...

2.  Open 24 hours, and good all the time.  I have pretty simple tastes when it comes to breakfast, and the Golden Apple delivers on all of the basics: flapjacks, eggs, bacon, fries, coffee, OJ.

3. The have a rotating pie case.

4. Gift potential - A couple buddies and I were stuck in Chicago right before Christmas due to a snowstorm, so we drank a lot, passed out, then went to the Golden Apple to grease up the hangover.  As a holiday gift, the owner stopped by our table of bleary-eyed dudes and perked us up with a free Golden Apple coffee mug.

5. OK, time to get all sentimental.  My first date/non-date with the woman to whom I will soon be married included a 1:00 AM stop at the Apple.  Are there wee cupid arrows in their waffles with strawberries?  Perhaps.

So, just go.  Go for the simple but delicious food, go for the stripped down decor, go for the waitresses who will keep your coffee mug full and call you "honey."  And go because odds aren't bad that you'll walk away with something extra, something good, something special.

The world can be divided into two types of people: those who jones a late night burrito and those who head for diner grub.  I fall into the latter category.  There's no "beanin' it" for this late night nosher.  Hook me up with a grilled cheese and some coffee - STAT!

I do love the Golden Apple.  Sure it's in the Golden Nugget/Pineapple family but it's not to be overlooked.  The menu is HUGE and all items can be ordered "Deluxe" which means you get soup AND fries.  Nothing is more fascinating to a drunk Kristin than course after course at the Golden Apple.  Well, maybe the bread/cracker basket that gets set down immediately.  Or the bottomless cups of coffee that fuel hours of late-night conversation.  It's all just nonsense, really, but isn't it fun?

I am very fortunate to have this place around the corner from my house.  Whether it be 4 a.m. after a night of religious drinking, or noon the day after a night of religious drinking, this spot is top notch.  The service has always been friendly, and the menu is quite assorted.  Breakfast, lunch or dinner can be obtained at any time of the day, and for very reasonable prices.  Hell, they even serve beer and wine!

You don't go here for the food, you go for the overheard conversations:  the guy who spends a half hour on the phone trying to figure out who bought a sixpack for his alcholic buddy; the waitress and the middle-aged guy talking about the middle-aged guy's ex-wife, the waitress's ex-husband and kids, and everybody's car trouble; the elderly guy shooting the breeze with anybody nearby who'll lend him an ear; the college kids, one of whom says "Without diners, people would go starving!"; the edlerly local eccentric who wears a straw cowboy hat, brings his sketchbook and will show his portfolio to anyone who shows the slightest interest . . .
If they ever closed this place, they'd have to set up some kind of counselling center.  A counselling center that served bottomless cups of coffee, that is.

By similarity of signs and names alone, I can't help but compare this place to the Golden Nugget chain of diners dispersed throughout the city. And so, based on only one visit to the Golden Apple, I consider my review more of a "Compare and Contrast" with the Golden Nugget-- particularly the Golden Nugget located at Western, Diversey, and Elston.

Service was great! (On par with the Nugget.) A group of kids appeared to be drinking beer (? - this is Apple exclusive). I shared a milkshake with my boyfriend. Our diner food was tasty (in the manner that diner food is)!

However, one thing struck me. I ordered a meal and I noticed that it came with a choice of soup, salad, or juice. Juice?! So I asked the waitress for the juice, grapefruit or tomato she said. I went for the grapefruit and to my amusement when she brought out my dining partner's soup, I was given a teeny tiny glass of juice.

All laughter subsided as I more closely examined the juice. It was dehydrated urine in color, and smelled vaguely of chicken soup. I daringly took a tiny sip and was disgusted! When the waitress returned I kindly told her I changed my mind about the juice.

Besides from that wild experience, I think it's a great place. Almost as good as the Golden Nugget! And... it's got a way cooler sign. :)

This place is way overrated. I don't care that "This American Life" spent a day there, it's not that good. On that note, maybe that publicity is why their prices are so unjustly high, considering the grimy, mediocre food they serve. Admittedly, I've been more than once. But I only go when it's the only thing nearby and open.

The Golden Apple is one of the best places you can go when you're totally drunk. It just is. You've probably seen the same menu at a million little diners around Chicago, but they don't have the same heart. I like the waitresses here. They're nice and they don't judge you when you fall asleep in your hash browns.

What is with all these Golden "random word here" restaurants in Chicago?  Golden Apple, eh?  Ok, I'll try it.

There really isn't much to say here other than: average.  Omelettes aren't bad, the pancakes are better than what I seem to keep getting served at the Golden Nugget pancake houses, and I like their combo prices and simple no-nonsense menu.

I'll have to go here sometime and try one of their chili-burgers.  It's listed at $4.99, and I have to say that makes me curious.  I use that as a test for a good diner, so a Saturday lunch sometime in January may be necessary.  If that passes muster, I'll bump this to four stars.  Otherwise, there's plenty of these places around Chicago, and so far, nothing sets Golden Apple apart from the others.
