On our way home from Lake Powell, we decided to stop for dinner and to stay the night.  Years and years ago, this was an okay sort of place.  Now, it is old and stinky.

Our room was dirt cheap at $29.99 on a Wednesday night.  Walking through the casino to get to our room, I noticed the stench of fresh and also stale smoke.  It could use an air handler update.  Don't get the cigarette Nazis out on me...I am an occasional cigar smoker and support people's rights to smoke (even though I hate the smell of cigarettes, and, cigarettes killed my dad and step mom).

Our room had 2 queen sized beds that had seen better days.  The blankets were a fuzzy, pilled, crusty wreck.  I had to make SURE that the sheet was pulled up and over the edge of the blanket.  If it touch any of my bare skin, I would have barfed.  Thankfully, the headboards were attached to the walls, so we didn't get that banging effect during sex in our room or from people in the room next door.  ;)

The bathroom was old and rickety.  The shower head was rusted out.  I tried to adjust the spray which was too wide, and the adjuster fell out.  I nearly didn't get it back into the head.  The shower floor was icky.  I usually bring a pair of flip flops to wear in cases like this.  It obviously had been cleaned, but it was so old and used up that all the cleaning in the world would remove the gunk in the nooks and crannies.  I have to say, that the shower curtain did NOT smell like piss or mildew...which occurs even in nicer hotel showers some times.

I have a hair pet peeve.  There were long dark brown hairs on the bathroom floor in the corners.  Very noticeable.  This leads me to believe that even though the place is old, it is not as clean as it could be.

Still, the room was worth it for under $30 bucks.  That night, I had a dream of staying in a hotel that caught fire.  Guess the whole run down, smokey thing got to me...

We dropped our stuff off in the room and headed to the Gold Rush Cafe for the $9.99 prime rib dinner.  The prime rib itself was very tasty, large, and cooked to perfection.  However, the baked potato was hard and dry, as if it had been cooked, refrigerated, reheated, refrigerated, reheated, and so on until it was finally placed onto my plate.  Not so good, but with enough real butter (I had to ask for it) instead of the margarine served, and the thick sour cream and measly chives, it was barely edible (hey, I was hungry!).  The carrots tasted like they had been frozen and microwaved.  Pretty gross.  The salad was mostly iceberg (which I loathe as it seems tasteless and too pale) with a few slices of cucumber and some cherry tomatoes.  The dinner rolls were soft on the top half, but stale on the lower half.  Our server was a very sweet lady, that never let our sodas run dry.  She was friendly, attentive, and in the need of a good perm relaxer.

The meal for under $10 bucks was worth it for the huge hunk of prime rib which filled me up.

Would I stay and/or eat here again?  I would.  As long as I was just passing through on the cheap.  It is NOT a destination hotel, casino, or restaurant.  Definitely a local joint with a bit of a drive from Vegas, Henderson, and so on.   It is easy on and off the freeway.  There is a gas station/mini mart adjacent.  Very convenient.

Cheap, cheap, cheap...

My family would stop by this roadside casino, and it's twin sister the Nevada Landing(closed), all the time during our trips to and from Vegas. We'd stop here to grab something to eat, use the bathroom, or do a little bit of gambling(Not for me, I was a teen at the time) or last second gambling if we're on our way home.

My last three trips to Las Vegas(2002, 2004, 2007) as an adult, I've either stayed here or at Nevada Landing(before it was closed). Unlike the new, megaresort casinos, the Goldstrike is relatively small and layed out in a straightfoward manner. So as soon as you enter the casino floor, it is easy to know which direction to head.

The rooms are cheap as hell. On weeknights you can get a room for under $20 for certain months. But so what? The rooms are clean and basic. After a day of fun, you just need a big bed to crash in. The money saved can be spent on other things. Another thing I like about this casino is that the parking is easy. Unlike the big hotels with their confusing indoor parking structures, the outdoor parking space is large and straightforward.

I've been to their buffet a couple of times awhile back. Small selection, bland, and low quality. Mostly I've eaten at the Gold Rush Cafe. Each time I order their Prime Rib dinner which is a great deal. Usually $7.99 or $8.99 for a large Prime Rib with all the sides. Taste good too.

The casino tables are usually kinda empty and there are very low limits. The people who work here seem low energy and uninterested.
Whatever, doesn't bother me. Old school casino is what this is. Might not be around for too much longer. So I'll enjoy it while it lasts.

Stopped here on our way home from Las Vegas.... barrrrf!  We paid $11.80 each for our "Holiday bruch" since it was Labor Day... We barely made it for the breakfast portion which consisted of, gross eggs, french toast that was still frozen in the middle, sausage, bacon, potato cakes which were actually good, oatmeal, grits, and salad...  By the time we got up from our first less than stellar plate the lunch items were already out... "teriyaki chicken" which appeared to be dry baked chicken with teriyaki sauce somewhere nearby, potato wedges, canned corn, tortillas, ground beef, and some funky variety of salmon that looked white... They had quite a few scattered desserts to choose from as well as one of those soft serve machines...

When we first walked in we attempted to find a table for the 8 of us since they don't seat you... we were told the bigger tables were in the back... we went over there and they didn't have ANY big tables clean, they had two back to back one and a half of them occupied and were going to seat us there because it was "easier" after we stood there and the guy didn't come back for a while we were wondering what happened to him... He came back and told us it was really busy today, even though most of the customers were actually the maids from the hotel eating lunch... then he stuck two tables together that weren't the same height and called it a day... He got our drinks.. the orange juice was horrid and watered down and the coffee was burnt...

If you're hungry, don't stop here!  Especially if you're easily carsick because that food just begs to come back up!  Bad times!

I've been to Gold Strike many times on my trips to Nevada to visit family and it's welcoming promises of relatively cheap food always get me. They have a variety of different types of food available (they usually have some kind of buffet ), but I usually go to the main restaurant. I can't say that the staff is always pleasant, and I can't promise you that the food is delicious consistently,  but I still go there.

The place is a little dirty, a little shady, and covered in enough gaudy decorations and flashing lights to make you throw up and have an epileptic seizure at the same time. If your going to Las Vegas, you'll see it on your way...go ahead stop and check them out. I don't think I'd recommend staying there though.

We used to stay at the Gold Strike before it got taken over by the mega-casino-chain which doubled the room rates. I think it's still basically the same, just more expensive. If it were still the steal it used to be, I'd give the Gold Strike at least another star.

The rooms are large and clean and modern, local phone calls to the LV area are free, the tv features some decent cable channels, the small pool and whirlpool are open fairly late and hardly ever crowded, the beds are good, and it's just generally pleasant and relaxing. Nothing fancy but not run down, skimpy, or skanky. We would drive to the Strip or downtown and come back late at night. Now that it's more expensive, we've relocated to downtown.

We still drive out to Jean to eat at the coffee shop. The blackened prime rib is delicious and only $9. The regular prime rib is no slouch either and costs $1 less. The coffee shop rates four stars.

You can get a 99-cent shrimp cocktail at the snack bar, but the hours have been drastically cut. Avoid the below-mediocre buffet unless you're going to fill up on salad and desserts. At least it keeps the coffee shop from being crowded! I've heard the high-end restaurant is good, but I'd rather splurge elsewhere.

The casino is moderate sized. The slots tend to be somewhat dated but there's a decent selection, and cocktail service is usually pretty good. The tables seem to be reasonably active. On weekends there's usually a country duo wailing away; not my taste, but it's entertainment.

An employee told me there's going to be a town there eventually to provide company housing for the mega-corp. Yeek.

The website can tell you a lot about this place. http://www.stopatjean.com is named so because no one in their right mind wants to stop here since they just stopped at the much nicer state line and can't wait til the strip.
I can tell you that you don't want to stop here, and you should listen to me and your natural instincts.
Sorry, the hotel is disgusting. So disgusting that I just stayed on the casino floor all night long. I didn't eat anything because I didn't want to throw up all over my friends. I'm sure **39** dollars a night sounds very tempting on a Friday, but I'm telling you that if you value your life don't stay here. Walking down the corridor to your room is like walking through a run-down haunted house. There was absolutely no one there and I felt like I was going to get sucked into the badly painted walls via some hidden passage. Don't do it.

Not quite Vegas...but close...

This was my first time to Jean, Nevada (you know...the casino stop in between Stateline and Lost Wages) and I must say...I was very happy with the Gold Strike Casino.  You'll see the giant lit up billboard announcing a $6.99 prime rib dinner & $.99 cent biscuits & gravy as you're traveling to LV, pull over and get some.  Surprisingly...the food is good.  The rooms are reasonable and clean as well.  Gold Strike reminds me a lot of the way Las Vegas used to be...glittery and a little seedy...a nice diversion from Las Vegas' current amusement park atmosphere.
