Golden Mountain is a great place for Dim Sum. None of this order you food from picking from a list at the table. At this place you get to order you food from carts that are pushed around by people. Every item that you can think of will come out of that kitchen: shrimp balls, beef balls, chicken feet, meat, noodles, and more.

I must warn you if you happen to have kids make sure not to get a table near the large plants. True Story: I came here with my friend, her son Joshua, my daughter Emily and me. We sat down and started to order food. Things were going well. The kids were good and we were having a nice time enjoying our food. We had taken our eyes off the kids not less than 5 minutes and as I look down on the floor there is a mound of dirt along with a spoon, fork and other utensils are kids could get hold of. They had not dug a small amount of a dirt but large.

Then my kid drops her spoon runs around to the other side of the table and with her little finger pints at her best friend and yells out Joooosssshhhhyyyy!

I am pulling the kids to the side and yelling at them No! Bad! Bad! All while my friend is on her hand and knees getting the dirt back into the plant.

We have gone back one other time and asked to have a table far away from the plants.

Best dim sum in the city. Hands down.

This is the way it's supposed to be. Loud, the only person who speaks English is the host, not the cleanest, big, but daaaaamn good, quick, authentic and cheap.

Don't ask for a fork; this ain't your mama's Yank Sing.

A fun experience, mediocre-to-good food, and a really good value.

I dined here for dim sum yesterday with a group of six friends. For starters, the place is enormous... the "Costco" of Chinese restaurants, as one friend described. So, it's great for groups, but not great for catching up with friends... we had distractions at least once every 30 seconds from the many, many restaurant staff hawking their edible wares at our table.

Do the attendants make commission on what they sell? Seems that way. They were pushy at times, almost insistent on leaving a plate of whatever-they've-got at our table, unless our "NO" was loud, clear and preferably repeated by someone else at the table.

Food alone, I'd give it 3 stars. The pork buns were the best item. I also tried some interesting things I'd never even seen before. Because many of the staff spoke little, if any, English, we didn't always know what we were eating... but that was part of the fun.

But, I'm big on the overall experience, so I'll give it 4-stars overall. It's fun, but at times overwhelming because of so many people stopping by our table, so frequently. In past dim sum experiences, I'd often encountered the opposite... hungrily waiting, sometimes long amounts of time, for someone to swing by.

There must be better stuff elsewhere in the city... but if you're a dim sum novice (like I), you'll probably have an interesting (and cheap) meal at Gold Mountain.

(PS. I'm not sure if dim sum is only on weekends, or everyday...)

I came here to take some guest, who were visiting me, from Hawaii to dinner at a decent Chinese restaurant.  I remembered how great the food was during the times I have been here for dim sum and after reading the great dinner reviews on Yelp, I decided to take them to take them to this restaurant.

When we entered the restaurant, after walking around Chinatown in the early evening, we were immediately seated and offered a pot of Oolong tea, which was welcomed after the cold evening walk.

The restaurant seemed so different compared to the mornings, when they have dim sum available.  It was so peaceful without the crowds and dim sum carts!  What a change!

I was the host and got to order from their menu for my friends!  I choose rainbow seafood soup, sliced beef with baby bok choy,  mushu pork w/wrappers, steamed tofu w/shrimp topping, baked chicken, and steamed rice came with the meal.  According to my friends, and I concur, everything was great but what really was special was the tofu - it was just great with the soy sauce lining it.  The bill for the meal was reasonable to all of us and was moderate for a Chinatown restaurant.  I could have taken them to Sam Lok for the real Chinatown experience but I'll save that one for lunch!

With so many different restaurants in the area, it was great to be able to check-out the ratings before heading to one on Yelp.  I am glad that it was so helpful doing my research in the beginning.  If I did not, I might have gone into a different restaurant and not have had a great meal.

Came here for a wedding last weekend. I was surprised that the restaurant had so many levels. We were placed on the 3rd level - the wedding had 36 tables...which is a lot..cause each table is a table of 10! This is an older restaurant has been around since i can remember, so its not a fancy Chinese restaurant at all. But with some decorations and seat covers, it actually turns out to look pretty decent.

We had the usual 10 course dinner...and everything came out surprisingly pretty good..everything came out hot and freshly cooked. I've been to weddings before where the food comes out luke warm or nuked in a microwave! But nope, this wasnt the case! The only complaint I have is that the fried rice was pretty dry....but other than that, everything was delicious and eaten up!

Service was super efficient too! Everytime we were finsihed eating, they quickly brought in the next dish and took away the empty/dirty dishes and changed out our plates. We asked for ice water, and got a whole pitcher of it! The room itself was very big, and lots of room to move around - we were not squished into one room! Perfect for all 360 something people! Sure parking is hard..afterall it is chinatown, but at least the food is good, and the place isnt too bad. Just dont expect a grand ballroom! Overall, had a good time, and yummy food!

Our hotel was literally on the same block as Gold Mountain...it's north beach/chinatown so Dim Sum was a no brainer

--i've never had truly bad Dim Sum and don't consider myself a guru..but I have been to a handful of places now and as long as the carts keep coming, i'm a happy camper

--we rushed in on a windy New Year's Eve a little before 1:30 pm, thinking they might be closed until dinnertime...to our delight, it was open till 3pm..much kudos there!

--we ordered a few shrimp dishes, wrapped rice with chicken inside (can't remember exact name of dish)..the fried shrimp balls came out a bit late, which was a downer b/c we were full by then but we still had plenty of shrimp

--the restaurant is pretty huge...service fast and they grabbed our checks with the quickness...our batches of food were very very hot..it's great when you can get food directly from the kitchen onto your table, and into your mouth

--overall, good place..carts keep coming...quick service

Everyone needs to experience the real dim sum eating way!
Not some "go to restaurant and choose from a list" , no, you have to do it the right way! :D
In the more authentic way, you get seated and then these people walk around with trays/carts/etc. Whatever you like/see, you get!  It's quite awesome actually!
AT LEAST YOU DONT HAVE TO WAIT FOR FOOD!
it's a good place for impatient people, haha.

The dim sum here isn't that bad to be honest.  I would just go here for the people walking around, you know, for the fun of it.

Side Note: Not a good place for vegetarians.

The dim sum here is great, which could be telling of their regular dishes, though I would not know since I've only been here for dim sum, which is great, if you didn't get that the first time. This place is packed, so be prepared to wait, but delicious and cheap things come to those who wait. That, is all you really need to know.

Not the best dim sum place, but pretty good and inexpensive! Always a plus. However, pieces are relatively smaller than what I'm accustomed to.

For $24 we ordered:
- Hai gow: Yum! Fresh shrimp and the wrapper was nicely thin and light!
- Shu mai: nice flavors and it came with a full shrimp on top!
- Pork dumplings: This one had no broth inside =|  but the meat was nice and tender. The vinegar sauce that came with it just tasted of vinegar with no ginger or anything in it.
- Cheong fun: Rice noodles with shrimp in a sweet soy sauce. This is usually one of my favorite dishes at dim sum places, but the sweet soy sauce was a little bland here :(
- Shrimp ball: HUGE with a nice crispy exterior. I would skip the heavy, thick, mayonaise type sauce though. It was a little sour tasting.
- Egg tarts: YUM! I love egg tarts and these were nice and light with a flaky tart crust. Just like I love them.

With so many other dim sum places in Chinatown, I might check out other places before coming back, but a solid place to go to. Watch out though, chow fun prices here are pretty steep at about $10 a dish depending on what is in there. Chow fun is usually about $6-7.

Service here is also quick and the ladies that work here are very nice. Hence the extra +0.5 stars.

This is a pretty good standard Chinese Restaurant. Haven't been for dim sum but have had dinner here. Dinner items were all very good. Nothing sticks out too much food wise, just your average A-Ok fare. Service was better than you'd except and prices were standard.

We came with 2 small kids and one ran around the restaurant the whole time with other kids he met there and stared at the fish tanks and no one seemed to mind. The other was a baby and needed a high chair. I swear the rickety metal high chair is from the 50's. But it did the trick.

Navigating which Chinese restaurants are good has always been confusing to me. Hole in the walls are either great or horrible. Places that cater to an English speaking crowd can make you feel better about your orders but sometimes you get screwed with horribly over soy sauced items. No English speaking places are sometimes tasty or are way too authentic and you end up with a pile of parts you didn't even know animals had. But... I definitely would come back here. Take it from the small town white-American girl dating the internationally raised Hong Kong native yet very 'American' Chinese boy that this place won't steer you wrong. We both approve of this restaurant.

Came here with a group of 10 friends on a Sunday afternoon (11am) and didn't have to wait at all... nice!
The food was ALRIGHT. Def. not the best dim sum i've had. They come around with little carts (i'm lame and i prefer just ordering). Ehh we had the usual ... and honestly I dont know what anythign is called except for hargow , xiao long bao (which was NOT good at ALL), chicken feet, and like char siu bao. We ordered duck which was tasty. I haven't tried any other dim sum places in the city (just down in socal) so I don't really know how it compares.

I was very confused by the fact that they gave us TWO pots ... one with hella black tea and one iwth just hot water....and then you had to mix them yourself. WHY!?!?! (and then we were charged for tea ... -___-)

Oh, and there is a middle aged chinese man server and he has really bright bling bling earrings that made us giggle (and my friend tried to keep taking a picture of him, but bec we kept rejecting his dishes, he kept avoiding out table...)

The bathrooms are gross.

If I had to pick out a "best" dim sum restaurant in Chinatown, it would be Gold Mountain. Personal "favorite." But it's honestly not saying much, as the quality of Chinatown food has always been plummeting, especially with everyone cutting costs these days. This restaurant's food doesn't significantly rise above the rest, but I would say it goes a little above standard.
Service, no comment...it's Chinese, service usually doesn't count as a factor as long as you get tea and food on the table!!

The only thing that keeps me from frequenting this restaurant all the time is the wait. There's always a wait, unless you go right at opening. It's especially annoying during peak dim sum lunch hours and weekends. Oh, and it's a pretty small space with a lot of tables, so expect to feel cramped. I would go elsewhere if you want a nice dim sum experience where you can feel more comfortable and enjoy a nice talk with your meal (like New Asia on Pacific).
But... if you're just in it for the noms, Gold Mountain all the way.

When we first came here, we weren't convinced, but Gold Mountain is growing on us.  For a reason -- the other dim sum restaurants in SF ain't that great.  This has been a process of elimination.  There aren't too many places with carts, and we really like that.

Like pretty much every dim sum place, some of the servers here are really rude, but some are super nice.  I feel like they are a bit pushier here too, very eager to deposit a tray on your table if you indicate any sort of interest in the dish.

However, the food is definitely good.  Nothing we have had has been bad -- all pretty standard issue, good shrimp, and the price is right.  If you are looking for dim sum in SF, this is a good choice!

Man - this place was really good!
Looks like an old school Chinese food place when you walk in, but every one knows you get the best food at places that look like they are hole in the wall joints.

It's clean (the place its self is HUGE!!!), the food is to die for (seriously, you can stuff yourself till you sick & you'll still want to eat more), the service is wonderful & you get a ton of food for a great price!!!
Talk about the place to go when spending the day in the city :)
I will definitely be back!

Meh.

This place is packed every night that I walk by it. Apparently voted "Best Dim Sum" as the poster out front announces. Maybe I should go back for that instead of dinner.

We ordered the fried Vegi Spring Rolls. They came with a good sauce and they were very fresh tasting. The prawns with walnuts came with a sauce that was more mayonnaise than anything else, but not in a good way. The prawns were nicely fried and breaded.

Beers were cheap here ($3 or so) and the service was fine.

Went here for a wedding this past weekend and it was just okay.

We were seated on the third floor of the restaurant.  There was another wedding reception on the second floor so it was fairly easy to get confused as to where you were supposed to go.  If you didn't pay attention you may have ended up at the other wedding reception instead.

Anyway, the room was set up very nicely so that was a good thing.  The bad thing was that once you reached the top floor it was really hot.  It's September and it's not that hot in San Francisco, especially at about 5pm.  There was fans situated in each corner of the room with other fans plopped in other areas.  When my family and I arrived at the top floor only two of the fans were on.  I guess they were trying to save energy.  As the 400+ guests arrived for the reception, most of the fans were on but oh my gosh it was still extremely hot.  It was so hot one of my sons were about to pass out until I stripped his shirt off of him.  Since San Francisco doesn't normally get hot I didn't expect this specific restaurant to have air conditioning but come on, at least invest in rotating fans.  Geez.

Okay, so onto the service. The first course came out and it was good.  It was a mixture of duck and pork.  Although I was expecting the soup to come out before this dish, it was still pretty good.  Every 10 minutes or so other courses would come out so that was a good thing so you didn't necessarily have to wait a long while for the next dish to come out.  The problem was that after the drinks on the table were finished, each of our tables were asking, practically begging for pitchers of water.  Why was it we had to ask twice and there was one pitcher for two tables.  When one pitcher would arrive both tables shared.  When that pitcher was done, we had to share the next pitcher.  This went on all night until we didn't ask for any more water.

The service was eh but the tables were set up nicely.  The food was ok.  I think the only dishes I really liked was the shark fin soup and the duck.  Other than that, unless it's for a wedding reception, I won't be coming back.

Decidedly decent dim sum.   Costs about twice as much as Joy Luck in Oakland, but higher quality ingredients.  And you can't really get _cheaper_ than Joy Luck.

All the standard dim sum fair.  Sometimes it takes a while for the shaomai cart to come around, we often seem to wind up at the end of the meal waiting for our fix.  Their baked pork buns have an interesting wine flavor to them, which I've come to enjoy.  They have a large space, and our large group of friends rarely has to wait long to get a table on Sunday mornings.  Yum.

I took my Grandma to this restaurant before she passed.  I still can hear her talking about how dirty the bathroom was.
They wanted Authentic Chinese and well they got it.  I have even seen former Mayor Willie Brown here a few times--of course his town car double parked blocking traffic outside.

I guess the food is pretty good but I always think of my Grandma.  Service is that of any Chinatown restaurant.

Super busy when I got there but we got seated right away! The items were pretty tasty! I tried chicken feet for the first time. that was interesting. we also ordered half a duck ($22). It was tasty, but i seriously DO NOT think that duck skull is a necessary decoration! My friends and I were there for about 2 hours, probably the longest lunch I've ever had in my life. After an hour, the servers ignored us. RUDE. We're obviously going to keep eating if we're there.

Definitely take a chinese speaking friend with you. You will definitely need them to ask what the dish is and also ask for certain dishes.

Good food, but not very clean, and don't come for afternoon tea

This place have delicious dim sum, as long as you don't mind the average cleanliest of this place. The table they sat us on had soy sauce spilled on the floor, which they had no intention of mopping. Upon arriving of our first dish of dim sum, I caught small fly hanging around and knocked it down, but it ended up on my empty plate, so I had to go get one for myself (sparse service).

We got here at 2:30 and literally they were locking their doors at 3 PM sharp and proofing their register (just like a bank). They didn't kick us out, but they did ask for us to pay before we finished. They have a daily 2 hr siesta between lunch and dinner at 3 - 5 PM. I don't see the purpose of it and Chinese restaurants in NYC don't have that. They also screwed up on the bill and shorted themselves $2.10, which they had to asked for from us before we left. Very odd restaurant overall.

Dim sum for Father's day with my friend's family. It wasn't crowded when we went at around 11am on Sunday, but later as we left, there was a wait. Service was a bit slow, but whatever, you're at a Chinese restaurant. Good service means they are fast & efficient, which was lacking. We had to ask them to refill our tea a few times and it took a while to clear our empty dishes. Food overall was good.

This is probably one of the better dim-sum restaurants in all of Chinatown. The dim-sum dishes are good and authentic, while the price is very good. This place is usually packed with Chinese folks, despite the large size of the place.

I haven't been here in a while, but for the times that I've wanted to "yum cha" in Chinatown, Gold Mountain was the place to go. I recommend it!

I have been here many times throughout the years for various family, political and community dinners.  Dim sum and banquet dinners were generally pretty good.

I hate to say this this without sounding like some snotty elitest, but I just do not enjoy coming here because it is always so stinking dirty...........

From the dining room to the bathrooms (of course), this place just reeks.
The ugliness of this place just turns my stomach.....

If you don't mind the dirt and uncleanliness, Gold Mountain has decent food..

I was first recommended to Gold Mountain by my dad who says that many Chinese locals go there. I brought my usual dim sum crowd (see my review for Joy Luck Restaurant in Oakland) there and we had a blast.

They have the standards: har gow, siew mai, char siu bao, char siu sou (great!!), dan taht, chee cheong fun... they also seem to specialize in wu kok (lotus root crunchy thing) as they kept bringing full trays of it out during our meal.

We brought 14 people and the tab per person came out to $10 after tip. Great!!!

P.S. for those who say it's dirty... Grow a pair.

The dimsum here is pretty good.  I've brought all my out-of-town visitors here for dimsum, and they all said they could taste a difference in NorCal vs SoCal dimsum... they said it tastes a lot better.  The dishes are a little more expensive than some places, but it comes with the quality of their food too.  Instead of waiting for the carts to come around, you can always ask the waiters to bring it out for you.  They are pretty good at doing that.

For you non - chinese people, get these and you're set:
* shrimp dumplings
* pork siu mai
* shrimp roll
* spare ribs
* chinese broccoli with oyster sauce
* sticky rice with pork or chicken

If you're being adventurous:
* chicken feet
* fried turnip

You can always ask what is in each of the dishes as they walk around, but the ladies might not speak english all that well.  That's when you can ask the waiters or look at the menu.

The restaurant is always packed with chinese locals, so you know it's gotta be gooooooood.  Long wait sometimes though.  Remember to take a number when you walk in!

I went here with a party of 5 for dim sum at 11:30 on a Sunday. Despite there being a crowd of people around the entrance, we were seated within 2 minutes, after being given a number and being told that the wait was 15 minutes. Great start.

I had heard about the retro decor, but it really didn't bother me and it wasn't nearly as dirty as I had expected. In fact, it wasn't "dirty" at all. I did think twice before putting my purse on the ground, but I did anyways.

We ordered a wide variety of what they had to offer and I was relatively pleased with everything. Nothing blew me away, but then again, I'm not the biggest dim sum fan to begin with. Plus, I was secretly comparing it with Yank Sing which I can't afford to go to without my parents.. haha.

It ended up costing $9 per person ($44 total), and everyone in my party was very very happy about that, mentioning that dim sum usually costs them close to $20 per person.

I would go back! You get what you pay for here. They don't have too much variety, but they have the usual suspects (pork shumai, shirmp fried stuff, spring rolls, steamed buns, fish cakes, duck, mango pudding, etc).

[ADDED EDITORIAL: I have been here many times, and I have noticed that if you go on an "off" time, the food tends to get a little stale.  Get there at noon when it is crazy and the food is good]
I went on the recommendation of my very snobbish chinese friend, who seems to know the best places for certain things.

It was awesome.  The first time I went with 2 other friends and we kept ordering and ordering and ordering.  I am usually wary of ordering with indiscrimination, considering I have been to $$Yank Sing$$, but even after special ordering a half duck (you have to order it from the waiter) which is $11, the bill came to $35.

Now besides the cheapness, the freshness and tastiness of the food is top notch.  AND, the carts come by with awesome stuff constantly and the waiters are totally nice.  You guys better leave at least 20% tip, stop being such stingy jerks, these people are working hard and the bill is way too cheap to leave anything else.

Who are these reviewers who comment on decor and whether they can put their purses on the ground?! Get a life.  This place rules.  Definitely the best dim sum in the city.

Nothing like a Chinese-Vietnamese wedding 10 course meal within spitting distance of all the strip clubs you could possibly want in North Beach.

This place is HUGE and we were just on the 3rd floor where the wedding reception held 600 so it can accomodate all your wedding needs and possibly a Monster Truck Rally as well.

I can't fault the food choices because I understand that most of them are traditional choices for a Chinese wedding. First Course...cold meat and shrimp plate 2nd: Delectable something covered shrimp with almonds or was it walnuts? Shark fin soup was in there. Fish. Awesome chicken but I could have done without seeing the cooked chicken heads. Pigeon....complete with Pigeon heads.

I lost track because I was recovering from way too much food the day before...no one told me Chinese weddings were 10 courses.

Food was very good. I'd go back. Even the cupcakes and chocolates for dessert were a nice touch.

So if you can cajole that stripper to join you after her shift ends, this is a great place to go. You can even have your wedding reception there if you marry her.

Got here relatively early on a Saturday morning (a little after 10AM) and the place was pretty empty.  When we first walked up, something looked oddly familiar to me, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it.  Got seated immediately and started ordering from the stream of carts passing by.  Standard fare for dim sum - nothing out of the ordinary.  Pretty cheap too - paid about $30 for a party of two and we were stuffed.

As we walked back to the car we passed by New Sun Hong Kong and it finally dawned on me - Broadway/Columbus sure looks different 1) during the day and 2) when you're sober.

One final note - anybody complaining about the service, filth, noise, decor, or ambiance in a real Chinese restaurant should stick to Panda Express and P.F. Changs.  For those of you who are "adventurous" enough to step foot in one, here's a tip - take a few napkins, douse them with tea, and wipe down your plate/teacup/chopsticks before your meal.

This Sunday morning I was in need for a hangover cure.  Gold Mountain came through for me via the greasy dim sum foods, and provided enough yummy leftovers for my afternoon treatment as well!  They even tasted great cold.  Gold Mountain is more than just a hangover cure.  It is also a delicious dim sum restaurant.  The tea here is solid too.

My friends suggested dim sum and came to pick me up.  We got there at 11:15am, and it was crowded already!  We waited ~10 minutes for a party of 3.  Generally speaking, they had all the dim sum selection that we wanted.  The quality was pretty good, and the service was average.  Parking in this area is kind of a pain, but we managed to circle around and find a spot about 3 blocks away - not bad.

I will have to come back here again... especially when I'm not hungover!

I'm visiting from Vancouver which has awesome dim sum, so I have pretty high standards :)

This place is average so here are the highlights:

Pros:  Cheap, lots of tables, fast service, basic selection of common cantonese style dim sum, generally okay quality, service isn't bad for a chinese resto, authentic taste

Cons:  Very basic decor, limited menu if you like more exotic dim sum items, there's definitely much better quality out there - the shrimp in particular in their har gow could be improved both with taste and texture, and the skin could be finer, most served lukewarm.

That being said, it's a solid 3* in my dim sum snob book!

A few friends and I found Gold Mountain this past summer while walking down Broadway looking for a dim sum joint. How did we picked this place?! Well... it had a long line so we figured it must be good enough for people to wait.  I liked it a lot, so I've made 2-3 more trips.

The wait has always been 15-20mins. Not too long compared to some other popular dim sum places in the south bay. The carts flow is pretty fast. You will find carts coming to you left and right with lots items, especially the popular ones. This is the only place where I haven't had to wait more than a few minutes for something I want to come by.

Yes, it can be pretty loud, carts aren't new and tables can be sticky. But for freaking sakes... it's Chinatown! Don't come here expecting what probably doesn't exist...

This is the Dim Sum pilgrimage we make from Pleasanton at least a few times a month.

The dim sum is just a little above average, but the delivery on the traditional carts makes sure it arrives hot.  (Too many Chinatown dim sum places just have you fill in an order slip, then they bring the steam baskets to the table.)  Carts also mean you see things and maybe try something new.

On weekends, and in summer, there is usually a wait, they hand out numbers.  Sit in the back (this is very large place) so you will be near the door the carts come from.

There are many restaurants on Grant Street aimed at Caucasians (gweilo), but we prefer the ones with a mainly Chinese clientele, Gold Chopsticks wins here, usually 90% Chinese.

Some large tables for 10-15 people.  Caution, many of the non-tourist restaurants in Chinatown have wait staff that doesn't speak English.  Enjoy it!  Or, why did you come?

Cheers,

Jay
