I visited the museum two years ago with my BF, since he is a Train fanatic. When we arrived it looked like a ghost town. My boyfriend didn't care cause he figured he had the place to himself and we did.
Being the only people we got to admire and take lots of pictures. They have trains from many eras and you get to rummaged through all of them. If you have been their in the past then you were one of the lucky one to be allowed to see the Pullman train the Ferdinand Magellan that was build for the President Roosevelt. It is now closed to the public due to the preservation of history. Ahhh!
The Gold Coast Museum also has a huge collection of model train and a hand on section for the little ones to play and a small link train to ride.
Gold Coast also has an amazing thing called "Train Crew Member For-A-Day" where you can drive the huge train. My BF and his friend did this and they enjoyed themselves. The prices are listed on the website.
If you are ever in this side of town go visit the Gold Coast and learn a little about the trains history.
They also do reservations for parties.
Free train ride Wednesday and Free entrances on first Saturdays of each month.

Another Miami place that few know about. The Museum was formed in 1957 by a group of Miamian's who were trying to save pieces of Florida history that were taken for granted and rapidly disappearing. Some of the earliest pieces in the collection are the "Ferdinand Magellan," the private railroad car built for President Franklin Roosevelt; the Florida East Coast Railway locomotive #153 , the engine that pulled the rescue train out of Marathon, Florida after the 1935 hurricane( I once worked with a man who was on that train after his entire family was swept away in the hurricane when he was a little boy); and the #113, an FEC locomotive built in 1913 and used in regular revenue service over the entire Florida East Coast railroad.
