one of the few places on campus that serves vegan food and even labels it as vegan! i'm referring to their daily soup specials. i think they usually have 4 soups and 3 of them are usually vegan. some of them taste suspiciously like imagine brand, which is fine with me because that's good stuff. also when ordering soup you don't have to wait in line, just go right up to the register! awesome!

I only consider eating at Gold Coast Grill for breakfast, simply because the wait during lunch is absolutely terrible.
The breakfast variety is priced well, and there's always some kind of breakfast special that gives you the food you need to not sleep in class for the day. My favorite breakfast special is the 3 pancakes with a choice of meat, 2 eggs, potatoes, and a choice of coffee or OJ for $6.25. For that same price you'd have to lose the pancakes and only get toast, um... no.
Certain items can be served to you much faster if they don't have to cook it on the grill, for example, their muffin sandwiches, or just a side order of meat or corned beef hash.
Lunch is a different story. Their burgers are big and juicy, but the wait for any grilled fare takes FOREVER. The campus paper says that anything they deep fry still uses shortening, and that contains trans fat, which is not good for anyone, especially with cholesterol issues. The salad bar is also a popular option they added, and you can load-up on a ton of greens, with hot soups, stews, fried shrimp, and chicken strips and a drink for about $5.
This is getting three stars because the lunch service bites. If they can find a faster way to get the lines moving, then I'd eat there more often for lunch. The student center after 10AM is very crowded, and it's very tough to find a seat. That's why I go for breakfast only.
I remember visiting this place for breakfast with my parents during my new student orientation several years back... my mom said this place served her the best pancakes she has ever had. I only had the croissant breakfast sandwich which was pretty big and damned tasty... (eat your heart out, McDonalds and BurgerKing!).
Their beef burger patties, while not as thick as the Six Dollar Burger from Carl's Junior, are bigger AND tastier than McDonalds, or Burger King. They make your sandwich the way you want it. But be aware that cooking burgers takes time especially if you don't want to get salmonella or E.Coli. So don't be surprised if you won't get your order for 5-6 minutes after placing your order (and if you want fries with it).
Their cheese steak sandwiches varies from time to time. At one point, they used a sort of vinegar-type of fluid to tenderize the meat, which was pretty unorthodox at first... but it tasted alright. Later on during the year, they change the kind of bread they used.... on time it was on a kind of french roll which was really meant to be used for the kinds of sandwiches at the New York Minute Deli (two floors down, also at the student center). And a few months past that, the finally choose to use the GENUINE SOFT cheese steak roll! There were also times when they would put provolone cheese by default... but recently, they use CheeseWiz.... which is the AUTHENTIC way to make a cheese steak (according to a documentary on PBS about sandwiches).
Salads: Believe it or not but the salad bar across from the line where you order your hot sandwiches/burgers is still part of the Gold Coast Grill. While this is no Fresh Choice, the selection is pretty decent, clean, and freshly prepared. This is THE healthiest (and cheapest) alternative to everything else they have on campus.
A tough place to review because it's such a mixed bag here.
Every Friday morning I head down to the Gold Coast & order up some bacon, egg & cheese on a croissant. HOWEVER, I have never once NOT had to remind them at the register that I wanted bacon on that. Lunchtime is a different story -- they're pretty mediocre (halfway decent burgers & edible chicken fingers), but their chicken veggie soup can be pretty boss.
The spot for breakfast (when you're not in the mood for a muffin or scone), but there are better places to lunch on campus.

What is there really to say about Gold Coast. The food isn't great; but, the food isn't bad, and it's affordable. If anything, I'd call Gold Coast the fully loaded cadillac of college cafeteria food.
The average cafeteria might have a couple of breakfast items, some sandwiches, hamburgers, and a baked potato for those "healthy" people on a budget.
Gold coast boasts 15 different breakfast items, from denver omelettes, to french toast or buttermilk pancakes, and even their own version of a Egg McMuffin. That's just the breakfast menu. Lunch has three times as much variety. Falafels, Philly cheese steak, hamburgers, chicken, salads, rubens, and so much more. No options were left out of this college eatery!
