Good food, generous portions, lots of character. The layout of the place can be a bit problematic - it is very easy to get confused.
The attitude here is VERY informal. I like to come when I want no frills, just some good food and quick service.

I agree with fatman on the food. It is really good. But the seating is ridiculous. They should hand you a map as you first come in, showing where the escapes/restrooms are. I had to go to the bathroom after having a very yummy chirizo omelet, but got lost trying to find the stupid thing. The waitress was cool, but I can't say I liked looking at her butt crack. Maybe next time I will just get food to go...

Talked some friends into visiting the Uptown Cafe one weekend.
It is a hidden little gem.
Wasn't quite sure on where to sit, but as a friend hates to eat outside (there is a nice looking patio), we sat in the small indoor dinning area- it's pretty darn small, so if you are claustrophobic in the least . . . I would head for the patio.
I am an eggs benedict, and hollandaise fiend. So, I was pleasantly (or "spangly" - thanks, Yelpers for approving of that new word to my vocabulary) surprised by the very large selection of eggs benedict - salmon, steak, corn beef hash, the kitchen sink - you name it.
I ordered the salmon variety- it was tasty, and the hollandaise was good, but I've really been spoiled by the hollandaise at another little gem; this came in as a close second.
And, as my fork has no boundaries . . . I sampled off my friend's plate of the corn beef hash variety - YOWZA! I never knew that I would like corn beef hash. I am definitely ordering that one next time.
I can't wait to go back and sample more food from my friends' plates . . and, I might share some of mine.
P.S. Something Greg B. said about hash browns reminded me . . . they also have excellent home potatoes -which includes lovely, lovely CHEESE melted through out the spuds.

Wow, my first visit to Uptown Cafe was outstanding! Just as others have said, this place really is the best breakfast in all of Sacramento. I have been in town four months, visiting at least one local restaurant daily and no other place compares to the quality, hospitality and overall, good taste and satisfaction. I loved the neighborhood hangout, bohemian/dive atmosphere!
Hollandaise is only served on the weekends, so I chose to order one of the Egg Benedict's with homemade fresh corn beef hash with home-fries! Boy, was I happy when it arrived. The Hollandaise sauce appeared to be lightly broiled after plating, giving it a very unique appearance, as fine as a well prepared creme brulee. The sauce was outstanding, flavorful but not too rich. The poached eggs were perfect and tasted ever so fresh! The corn beef was mild with a great flavor. Mimosa's were on special for $3.25 and served in chilled glasses, very fresh and tasty!
The service was outstanding and George visited the table personally. All of the employees were joyful, working as a team and having a great time. My coffee was refilled fast and with a smile every time.
I only wish I would have discovered Uptown Cafe four months ago! Every plate served nearby was appealing and I can't wait to go back and have the Cajun Catfish. One local person mentioned that is what he orders every time he visits!
Breakfast is served all day but they close at 2PM on the weekends and 3PM during the week. They are not open right now until further notice in the evenings. They had signs posted stating the Pizzeria was closed for now in the evenings but the pizza was still available after 11 AM daily till closing.
I can't wait to go back!

I came in for breakfast, twice now. I didn't stray from traditional breakfast fare, so maybe my low review is due to that. Eggs were prepared to my liking, with nice crispy home-fries. But... ONE piece of toast? seems kinda chintzy.
They get a big raspberry from me for allowing smoking on the patio. Non-smokers must sit inside on a beautiful sunny morning so that the smokers can have all the "fresh" air. PPhhhhhhhhtttttt! The interior is dark, and not very roomy.
Servers are friendly and efficient.

Good ass food. Everything else is shitty. I'd go back for the food though. It's that good.

One of those magical hole-in-the-walls that you leave feeling stuffed!
Heavenly cheesy breakfast potatoes... divine eggs bene on the weekend... lunch time, try their pizza! we love doing a pizza with feta and pepperoni. Their pizza "half" of the restaurant is too cute. Pitchers of beer are reasonable too!
Del Paso is a hidden retro gem in my opinion because everyone thinks of "the heights" when they hear Del Paso. There is an amazing strip with new art galleries, ice skating, boxing gym, restaurants and shops on the 160 side of Del Paso.
Uptown Cafe has been there forever and is a favorite spot for the Woodlake neighborhood locals. Yeah, they allow smoking on the patio so sit inside if you don't like smoke. The owner George is very sweet and he is usually there to greet ya. Service can be iffy only because the place gets slammed and they don't have a huge staff so you have to be a lil patient. The servers they do have are very nice and work very hard to please everyone.

Memorial day was my husband's birthday, so with my Mom and two kids in tow, we headed out to try Uptown and take the light rail to the capitol. I was pleased to see the restaurant had tables available, being a holiday and all, I had braced myself for a wait. They sat us in a back room that was deserted up until we were about to leave, which was actually perfect for my 3 year old to get up and explore. There was an old school juke box which we utilized to its fullest. The service was only one star, sorry to say, that we never got water or or other drinks until we tracked down someone and asked several times. My food came without the toast, which was my son's breakfast, and we had to ask twice and it arrived as we were paying our bill. I should have tipped 10% but I am in the industry so such things are prohibited by common karma.
The food was heavy, typical hole in the wall stick-to-your-ribs breakfast. I wouldn't hurry back for the food, but the ambience is fun for this Bay area transplant that misses Momma's in Oakland.
my absolute favorite breakfast joint in town. the food is always delicious and the staff are very friendly. they have hands down the best hollandaise sauce i've ever had.

If you like down to earth people, lovely American comfort foods and a yuppie free environment, oh boy, then you are going to love the Uptown Cafe! Come by for breakfast and lunch for the best greasy spoon food I've ever tasted, or come by for dinner and enjoy a hand-made pizza and some beer. If you're lucky you will meet George, the ever smiling, cigar smoking boss of the place. He is a true gentleman, greeting everyone by their name. George went to Culinary school in France and taught culinary arts at USC. Now he spends his days chatting away with the regulars, who cannot get enough of the great food and sometimes even stop by just to say hi and read the paper. Skip the over-crowded and stuffy atmosphere of the brunch places downtown and come see what a real American food experience is all about!

The Uptown Cafe was my dinner stop last night during the Light Rail Pub Crawl that visited Del Paso Heights.
I was pleasantly surprised by the Uptown Cafe - I was so hungry that I would have eaten anything really - but their food and prices were great.
There were 4 of us in need of food before imbibing anymore - we ordered a large pizza that was half vegetarian & half sausage - that cost us a whopping $13.99 - and it was really good! Another member of my party ordered a dinner salad - it was $4.99 but huge and very fresh. We also had an order of wings that were tasty.
The restaurant was closing at 8 pm and we arrived there about 7:30 or so - along with two other groups from the pub crawl - the waitress was very accommodating and our food did not take long to arrive.
I'll definitely head back out to Del Paso to eat here again.
