Pardon my french, but let me speak Italian...
I had to go to Milwaukee for work a few times (before I became funemployed).
I didn't explore much of the city, but after a few days of taking food suggestions from the dummies I was working with... I decided to jump on the internets.
Found Glorioso's. I was jazzed.
Perfect deli... Everything looked in order.
All the nice Italian imports for Nonnies of the city to cook with, except no dust covered dry goods, nice and clean... And their produce looked clean and fresh, not fucked up second rate shit like some Italian grocers (true story). Nice selection of artisan cured meats, nice selection of cheeses.
I bought a Nero d'Avola for under $10 (brand?), a small prosciutto sandwich (small because I ordered it small not because they don't understand portions), and a dry cacciatore salume...
I went back everyday. Everyone is nice, family or not.
Better than eating cheese curds and cheese wizzz beef sandwiches (sickos) or that shit you people call pizza...
Its hard to believe anyone in Milwaukee would eat anywhere else... Ever.
I'll be back.
Thanks/Grazie
Notes:
Not sure if they have lotto, No white tees... But they do have the all sorts of nice "I'm italian blah blah blah" shirts. I can dig it.
One thing I like about this city is the ethnic diversity, given the place is really expensive. The only thing I found cheap there is the breadcrumbs ,gelato and chocolate covered pretzels. They had some good deals on produce, they have a really nice deli case. The staff are really friendly.
Milwaukee's only stanging traditional Italian Delicatessen and grocer.
Delicatessen sandwiches are quite possibly my favorite sandwiches of all time and this is the only place to get a real one here in Milwaukee. Sandwich, pasta salad maybe some olives, a san pelligrino, and a bacca chocolate to top off = a lunch to die for. Good meats for italian fods and some fun italian items to try out if you havent already.
Great local, ethnic, mom and pop shop. Love the bulk food items. some of the lowest prices on live oil in the city. The deli counter always has delicious items waiting for me. I love the hot ham and rolls on Sundays. The quick sandwiches and pizza breads for $3 or less are always a treat. Check it out!
Mama Mia! This place is amazing!
Glorioso's is one of the reasons why I love Milwaukee. It is these small, ethnic mom and pop stores that make this place great.
Glorioso's is one of the best. Everything about this place screams Italian. The prepared food, the products, the employees, the customers... everything. As a person of Italian descent, I feel right at home here.
I stop by on a regular basis to pick ingredients for pizzas. Most people don't realize, but they have some great homemade dough frozen in the first set of freezers when you walk in. For only ~$4... it's worth it!
This was part 2 of my search for a good italian beef in Milwaukee where I now work.
Most of the food here is pretty damn good. The Italina beef sandwich was small and not true Chicago style...served on a sesame seed roll. But the beef and hot peppers were good quality. The deli itself was well stocked, but the marinated olives were very bitter compared to others I've had elsewhere. Service was good, neighborhood was cool.
Great stop for groceries or even lunch.
$2.50 Italian Sausage sandwich or $2.99 meatball sandwich are straight from heaven. Sometimes you will even find super cheap produce specials. The employees are a real treat too.
Make a stop. You won't be let down.
Aw, the nice old guy in the deli called me "sister." Get the pepper shooters, and if you still have a few suckers left in the morning, take the man's advice and fry them up with some eggs already.
Great sausages, butter olives, baked ricotta? Yes. Crispy sesame breadsticks, quarts of family-secret marinara, lupini beans? Uh-huh. Also, lots of wine deals, and a truly awesome selection of canned, smoked & tinned seafood. In warmer months, the displays of produce outside by the entrance are the owner's picks for best of the day.
love love love this place.
I LOVE this place. I always stock up when I'm in town: marinated pepperoncinis, spicy Italian sausage, yummy cheese, cookies, cannoli, chianti, bulk nuts, coffee soda, And the staff are super nice and they make me feel all warm and happy. YEAH. Awesome. I am hungry now
Perfect picnic lunch: bread, olives, cheese, chocolate, and some pears.
Ciao ragazza!!
Case in point...find anything you need and saw when you went to Italy...right here.
You even get the snarky old man who can't be bothered to wait on you and think that it's a crime that you walked into his establishment and can't say bongiorno.
Good selection of everything Italian, In Chicago it would be average, Parking is tuff. Old school store. Been there forever, Great neighborhood (Milwaukees Lincoln Park) FYI, Make sure you try any of the Sendik's too.
Another of my husband's favorite old-time haunts, which he would remember fondly as he bemoaned the lack of fresh olive salad, real caponata, authentic mortadella, or fresh cheese of any Italian kind in whatever city we lived in at the time. Now that we've returned to his childhood stomping grounds to live, this is another small grocery we go out of our way to buy those certain items from...
Glorioso's is the kind of place I wish there were more of in this world. Look up "mom & pop grocery store" in the dictionary and should just say "Glorioso's." The place is so authentic, right down to the delicious homemade Italian specialities served at the deli, the hard to find Italian sauces, cheeses and vegetables, the quirky handmade signs hanging throughout the place, and the litle old Italian mimma who runs the place, walking around barking orders to her crew in Italian with big hand gestures. This is the kind of place that will make you wish you were Italian. Actually, this is the kind of place where you feel Italian, if you are the furthest thing from it. Great place.
My sister and I stocked up on Italian cookies and a canoli, only to take a bite and realize they were moldy. All of them. YUCK!
One of the reasons I would find it hard to move from Milwaukee. The weather is bad (in the winter anyway) but this place makes it worth while. I get at least two Italian Beef sandwiches with hot gardenia peppers (they sell their own line) and two of the meatball sandwiches. Then gets some more meatballs to go with some sauce to throw over some pasta later. They also carry lemoncello (line lemon vodka shots - keep it in your freezer), Prosecco, and lots and lots of great Italian specialty food items. A special place with special people that make you feel good.
The blest place for Italian goodies, and check out the sandwiches.
Mmm... cannoli - and lots of other fun stuff too.
