Oh I just love this theatre! It's full of nostalgia and we make the trek to see independent films, attend festivals, and see the movies that don't come to our little town. It's worth an hour drive!
I love the old look- the sweet little ice cream shop out front, the old fashioned ticketing booth, the vintage carpet- it's just so retro, in a good way. It's not overpriced and the workers (mostly teenagers) are very courteous and helpful.
The seats are red velvet, lush and the screen/stage is modern- with seashell light fixtures above and around.
Definitely a place to go to see those films that you've been dying to see. Support local business! -

I am thankful that there are any venues for fine art movies in Kansas City. Although I now watch most my indie movies via Netflix, once in a while I agree to sit through some pretty annoying audience behavior (crackling bags, talking during the movie, texting....) in favor of the real movie experience.
This place won't win any awards for location or ambience, but it is still doing its thing! Thank god the Fine Art's are appreciated and loved in the Midwest! Cheers! -

What a wonderful theater! It's funny. You'd never imagine that one of the very finest theaters in all of Kansas City would be found in a near-derelict relic favored by mall-walking geriatrics.
May God bless the Fine Arts Group. They've single-handedly established a network of the very best independent theaters in all of Kansas City. These are people who sincerely LOVE film. Setting foot inside one of their theaters, It's positively palpable: these theaters (The Rio, Glenwood, Leawood) are labors of love.
The screens are surprisingly large. The seats surprisingly cozy. The concessions are surprisingly solid, and the place even offers ice cream (each flavor named for a different film. Chocolate Chip Mint - aka Soylent Green - is particularly amusing). The films they screen are, almost without exception, excellent.
Long, long ago, at the tender age of 16, I worked at the old Glenwood Theater in Overland Park, which, as Samantha A. mentioned, was razed to make way for a Bob Evans. I couldn't have been more happy when it was announced that the incredible old googie sign for the Glenwood had been purchased by the Fine Arts Group. A local treasure like that deserved to be salvaged, and these guys understood that. Again, these are passionate people. Passionate about film, passionate about local history. And in the age of impersonal movie giants like AMC, that passion is positively refreshing.
When in Kansas City, this is a must.Listed in: JoCo Isn't Always Lame

They may not have an art deco building going for them. And Overland Park is nowhere near as posh as Leawood. But the Glenwood Arts Theater tries harder! And that's why it's my favorite.
Take their sign. The original Glenwood Theater was demolished to make room for, get this, a Bob Evans restaurant. But somehow the new Glenwood got the sign and preserved a pretty cool piece of community history. Talk about recycling!
The owners have given some thought to the Glenwood's interior too. Where else in town can you grab some honest-to-goodness ice cream before the show? Or a coffee, even!
Glenwood, maybe you're not megaplex, but you have some nice extras to go with your cool movies, and the big guys could learn a thing or two from you. -

New York, NY
It was a rainy day and Metcalf Mall was dead, safe for a few senior citizens lined up to cast their early votes. Glenwood Theater was open but no one was inside and the movies they were rolling that day were between shows. An amiable man met me at the door with a greeting - I think he could tell by my hesitation to enter that I hadn't been there before (and I really hadn't.)
Me: (After walking through the mall and noticing all of the shops were stripped of its merchandise and barricaded) Is the mall closing or something?
Him: Not that I know of - our lease doesn't end for another year and a half.
(I think he was slightly offended that maybe I was implying they weren't 'popular', he continued:) We are really well-known in the city, you know. We just held a huge film festival - it was widely attended.
At this point, he had somehow switched up our brief conversation to make me feel like the freak, even though he was the one standing behind a popcorn machine in a dead theater lobby on a Wednesday afternoon. I was impressed, and humbled and pressed on because I was genuinely intrigued.
Me: Well I wish I had known, I would have come! (Awkward laugh...)
Him: Do you want to see a theater?
Me: Okay, Yeah! (sounding like a little kid who gets to shadow the cop for day)
Even with no one inside, the theater was glowing with (I don't know what else to call them) techni-color theater lights - and it was large and the seats were PLUSH (check out the photos if you have time, I documented all of it).
I want to come back when there's a show and maybe I'll get a soda from their soda shoppe (open 30 for the 30 minute before and after the feature presentation). I liked the feel of it - it was comfortable, intimate and quality. -

Overland Park, KS
I love this theater! It's so funky and cute and has a Ben and Jerry's bar near the concession stand. It's part of the independent film circuit and always has lots of flyers for upcoming festivals and nice summaries of what's showing or about to show. It makes you want to become a member and wear the tee-shirt proudly. You'll feel like part of a community every time you see a movie there.

Overland Park, KS
I loved going to this theater. It seemed so random in the middle of Overland Park, but it was a fun experience.
I wanted to see No Country for Old Men as soon as it came out. It was still in limited release and this was one of the few theaters that was screening it.
The theater was small and cozy and there were several other patrons who had good taste too :) The interior was not as bubbly per se as the Rio, but it was a great theater and I will always support an establishment that is committed to the arts and Indie films. -

This is a nice Theater. What is nice about it is that it is rarely packed. I also like the selection of indie films. The main complaint is that the seating is odd in that no matter where you sit, you feel far from the screen.

This theater has a lot of charm. Sure its set in a mall that seems to only generate patrons of the geriatric age, but there's something to be said about family run movie houses. Event the daughter of the owner was behind the concession stand helping out. She couldn't have been more than 12 years old, but she was handling the cashiering like a pro. Even trying to upsell popcorn and snacks which the seniors got a kick out of. She proudly mentioned how her dad owned the theater, and that feeling of pride seemed to spread throughout the other employees and moviegoers--everyone smiling happily. And I must mention their popcorn! It seems fresher and more authentic than big movie plexes, which can sometimes taste stale and chewy. Their popcorn had that warm, buttery taste of freshly popped and choice kernels, just tasted better
I liked that the theater was small, gives a community feel, and they play mostly independent films. Definitely a place to come to for a good night out.
