We were doing the Los Angeles to San Francisco drive via the PCH (Pacific Coast Highway) or commonly known as Route 1.  Upon arrival in San Francisco, we decided to stop in what it seems a cute little place in the middle of Sonoma County.  And boy... what a nice place!!!

A little history, the Glennely Inn used to be the old train station depot for the town.  It was then converted into this handsome place.  All the rooms are furnished with antique/era furniture which makes you feel like you are back in time.  We decided to go for the "Valley of the Moon" suite and it was superb!  There was an old stove fireplace, a brass bed, many curtains, couches... I mean, you do feel like you are in the 1800's.  The bed was super comfy with very big fluffy pillows and nice comforter.  And no TV or radio in the room either!  So you do feel like you are back in time with none of the modern distractions...  but if you got your computer with you, wireless is provided.

The facilities are nice.  Great balconies with outside seating, a nice big grass area, and a communal TV room with full cable, DVD and VCR with homemade cookies, fireplace, coffee and tea.  We sat here and watch a movie while sipping tea and eating chocolate chip cookies while the fireplace behind us warmed up the room...  ahhh... this is life!

Breakfast... phew!  What a nice one.  First, you do feel like you are walking into someone's kitchen and eating in their dining room table.  Even though you could make the usual order of eggs, etc... they also have a daily homemade "something" which could be a quiche, bread, etc...  wow, wow, wow... super yummy!  We had 2 or 3 servings of each!

Then, after breakfast, there is a 'living room' area with a nice big balcony, newspapers, information/touristic brochures, a piano, library with board games and books to borrow.  Also there is a computer with a printer and a telephone for free local calls.  We sat there after breakfast, read the newspaper, listen to the nice jazz/classical music in the background and relax...

And while we had breakfast, the staff cleaned our room!  By the time we got back to the room it was perfectly cleaned!  What a nice touch!

Oh... and if you want to know how to make those delicious homemade breakfasts, you can buy a cookbook with all their recipes for only $15.00. And it is worth it!!!!!

They also have free "Glennely Inn" post cards to send right outside of the TV room.  When you fill them out, place them in the mailbox on the table and the manager will stamp them for you (free of charge) and mail them... extra nice touch!  And when you check-in, do nor forget to ask for the complimentary wine tasting card that will allow you to work your way through the wineries around for no wine tasting charge.

The Final Verdict:

Lobby/Reception Area:  (just check in the main office - N/A)

Hotel Amenities/Facilities : 5.0 / 5.0

Staff friendliness/responsiveness: 5.0 / 5.0

Room Decor/Ambiance:  5.0 / 5.0

Room cleanliness: 5.0 / 5.0

Room Amenities: 5.0 / 5.0

Bed Comfort: 5.0 / 5.0

Hotel Bar:  (none - N/A)

Hotel Restaurant:  (Breakfast only) 5.0 / 5.0

Check-in/out Speed: 5.0 / 5.0

Total Score:  40 / 40  ( 100 out of 100% or  A+ Grade)

Final Comment:  This place is centrally located for a quick drive to many wineries in Sonoma.  Not the place for backpackers, or if you want to be in 'the middle of town'...  This is a great place for couples and those who are looking for a place to relax - with none of the usual 'hotel feel' - more like a family or someone's home feel.  Great staff and great amenities make this place a good one to stay to relax, enjoy, reconnect and be away from it all....

Found this lovely little home near Sonoma wine country for a birthday weekend celebration. The price was about $175 a night, which is a lot, but sadly for Sonoma, it would be considered a deal..... (sigh for property value and supply/demand driving the price up in this area).

The property was converted into this cozy b&b from a train station.

It's very comfy and inviting and the rooms are all decorated with antique country-inspired furniture. There's a community room equipped with a refrigerator and late night snacks like cookies, coffee and tea :) There's also a tv and dvd player in case you want to stay in and watch a flick.

The grounds are beautifully maintained with lots of flowers and a sauna inside the garden area. It's very comfortable and relaxing.

We stayed in the St. Francis room, which was on the small side, but you don't come to Sonoma to stay in the room. The only down side was we could hear people inside the community room next to us because our room shared a wall.

There's a family cat named, Lars whose really chill and friendly.

My friends and I were running a race near Calistoga and decided to stay in the Sonoma area.  Tbear and I stayed in a cottage (Rocky Terrace) for $254 a night.  After we checked in the guy showed us the grounds.  Some of our friends joined us and we sat at the picnic tables, drank a bottle of wine until sunset and then moved into the common living room.  We browsed through the music collection, books, munched on some crackers and cheese we found in the kitchen and our friend played the piano.  I wished it was my house!  The bed in our room was so comfortable and there it had a fireplace.  The breakfast included a pumpkin bread pudding with eggs and sausage.  Ohhh delicious!

History

Established in 1916

The Glenelly was built as an inn in 1916, during Jack London's time, serving visitors who came by rail from the Bay Area to enjoy the natural beauty and almost year-round sunshine.  Through the years it evolved from Larigne's to Cambou House to the Glenelly Inn in the 1980's when the restoration of the inn began.  Kristi has owned the inn since 1990 when she purchased it with her mother, Ingrid, who has since passed away.   The same traditions of leisurely graciousness and country hospitality in a charming setting have been maintained through the years.
