The ice cream flavor of fever dreams: Funky Donkey. Oreos, peanut butter, fudge swirls....
How is it that in the year 2011, Glacier is the only place I've seen and tasted this incredible delight? Why is it not in five-gallon cartons in scoop shops all across the land?
Not to mention a million other amazingly enticing flavors like Coffee Caramel Crunch (coffee ice cream with Oreos and homemade caramel swirls), Chai (with Madagascar Bourbon vanilla), or any of the delightful gelatos (their Coconut has ruined me for all others). On their website they note that their shops have up to 80 flavors at a time, and I concur with the truth of that statement. Their vast selection of impossibly good ice cream and gelato is simply stunning, both in variety and quality. (Did I mention BOTH the caramel and the hot fudge are made from scratch?)
The next time I hear someone in town tell me they know where good ice cream or gelato is in Seattle, I'll just have to laugh. And then cry, since Glacier's so far away....Comment from mark m. of Glacier Homemade Ice Cream 8/31/2011

What can I say...I'm not even a fan of ice cream, but Glacier has made me reconsider. Their peanut butter chocolate is to die for! And they also have a yummy banana flavor that I can't stop thinking about. One star off for their birthday club malfunctioning and not sending rewards, and for a sometimes crap attitude from their employees. Best ice cream in the area but not cheap.

Glacier has all the flavors. They have gelato as well. I like the coffee flavored gelatos. The bing cherry is great as well. However I don't quite understand the super high rating and the home-made moniker. The ice-cream you find here isn't any different than what you would get out of a tub of Haagen-Daz, Ben and Jerry's from the grocery store. To their credit their prices aren't any higher than other store bought brands just because they are local as is the trend in Boulder with other things. I like that they have pre-packaged pints on discount for ice-cream that is not too old.

I really don't understand what I'm missing.
After seeing the raving reviews here on Yelp, my husband and I made a point of tracking down Glacier Homemade Ice Cream during our day in Boulder. We were both completely underwhelmed! I tried the key lime pie (WAY too tart), moon pie (eh, just so-so) and ended up going with strawberry (which was good...but not any better than a carton of Breyers). Jeremy got one of the peanut butter flavors and while he was happier with his than I was with mine, he still agreed that we would have had better ice cream at DQ, Cold Stone...or the grocery store.
So disappointed. :( -

Super tasty ice cream. I recommend the cookies and cream if that is your thing. It is a small little joint but they had a ton of ice cream choices.
Sitting out front eating the ice cream outside was a nice end to the night. -

While still in Boulder, Co for some training I had 10 minutes left of my lunch time and was like "yeah I have time to pick up some ice cream." I went in and got a choco dipped waffle cone with mint choco chip ice cream on bottom and mint Oreo on top. 2 SCOOP'S liked the Mint Oreo much better for some reason. But the best thing ever is the fact that the waffle cone never and I mean never let the ice cream leak thru while I was driving back LATE of course.
Once I got back 2 minutes late everyone was like where you get the ice cream, "yeah you know it's delicious." It is a little more $$ than say DQ but totally worth it.
Will go again. YEAH!!! -
Review from Tory w.
Holy crap this place has good ice cream. Not only that, they have a huge and interesting flavor selection, AND they have gelato, with an equally huge choice of flavors. Like a kid in a candy store (or an ice cream shop), I stood before the huge case, mesmerized and completely bewildered. I sampled the Funky Donkey, it was great, but I can never pass up coconut chocolate chip -which they had as an ice cream and as a gelato. I may move to Boulder just for this ice cream shop.

Over 80 flavors? I like havin options but damn.
How many samples can you have when there's that many flavors? How bout 40.
Ok I lie, but might as well been. I ended up with a scoop of almond gelato and a scoop of pistachio gelato. Pretty nutty. I was disappointed w/my choices afterwards...especially after tasting what my friends got: Mint Oreo and Banana Caramel Crunch (the crunch = oreos). Yummers.
It was like, 30 degrees outside and this place was packed like a clown car. Now we know why. Awesome Boulder staple. -

I have been saying this since the first time I came here: Best ice cream ever!!!!!!! if you don't like this place you don't like ice cream. they have bar-none the best flavors consistently.

Yum! Walked in and was immediately salivating from the aroma of freshly made waffle cones. Glacier doesn't mess around. Their homemade ice cream is made daily and it tastes that way! I sampled (they let you do this, so be sure to ask) the S'mores ice cream, which was delicious, but ended up going with my usual cookie dough ice cream. It was quite tasty! Will definitely go back next time I'm in Denver.

YUMM!!! Lots of flavors and fresh cones, what I loved was that they had white chocolate flavored frozen yogurt. I love frozen yogurt and white chocolate is my favorite anything. I never thought I'd see that combination anywhere but it was awesome! I got feasted on mosquitos in the parking lot while a crazy person walked by shouting insults and profanity at us!! COOL!!!

Given the choice between ice cream and the current trend for frozen yogurt, I'm going to pick ice cream every time. Given the choice between Glacier and any other ice cream joint in Boulder, I'm going to pick Glacier every time. Their ice cream is rich and creamy, and between their ice cream and gelato flavors, they have plenty of options. I'm a simplistic lady when it comes to the traditionals, so I love the Death By Chocolate. Their salted caramel is also killer, as well as the hazelnut. And the shakes! The shakes are to die for. Go now, while the summer's still hot!

It really is the best ice cream evar. The first time I encountered their ice cream was when they participated in a taste fest at CU. As a random choice, I picked their coffee caramel crunch. The flavors melting in my mouth were extraordinary. I typically go the vanilla or chocolate route, so this was something special for me. Since then, that has become my absolute favorite ice cream. Whenever I'm in Boulder, I have to stop by and get some.
A friend spent a summer in Boulder, and fell in love with their cookies and creme. He wants it dry-iced and shipped out to California, that's how good it is. -

Glacier is hands-down the best ice cream shop in Boulder. They have amazing handmade ice cream, as well as handmade gelati and sorbets in all sorts of interesting flavors (the chocolate sorbet is incredibly weird, and incredibly good). Tons of variety, premium ingredients, and huge serving sizes...what more could you want? Highly recommended!
Best bets: Chocolate Hazelnut ice cream, mint cookie ice cream, Ghirardelli milk chocolate ice cream, any of the gelati & sorbet flavors. -

Glacier is ridiculously good. They've got this raspberry chocolate melt that came from a passing comet or something - it's that yummy.
My kids, my parents, my friends - we all love it.

A 5 star average Yelped location!!! Those are rare so the wife and I had to give it a try. The verdict? 4 star. We tried this place 3 times and I tasted the following flavors:
Strawberry - The best strawberry ice cream on the planet!!!
Key Lime Pie- Very good, very strong but taste like the real deal.
Dark Cherry- Wow again this was great!!!
Colorado Peach- Tasted like they used unripe peached... very disapointing.
Overall this place rocks, if you are in Boulder swing on by and give this place a shot. Also remember to try samples of everything!!! -

Funky donkey.. must have funky donkey. Such a huge selection of ice creams, yogurts, and gelettos. The staff are happy to help you with a selection or tasting of three.
While I was in uniform they gave me my dessert for free and a coupon for a free coffee during my next visit. Y'all rock. -

This is a great locally-owned business, started in Boulder! I see they now have a Manhattan Beach, CA location in addition to other CO franchises! And now they are going to China!?
Not that I NEEDED an excuse to go, but when we had our cousins kids in town, I had to take them there even though it was January...they weren't the biggest ice cream fans (huh?) but they did find ALL the gnomes in the painting, even the ones someone had scratched off - DOH! I could hardly be bothered to find one!
I really digg their:
1. Key lime ice cream
2. Bing Cherry
3. Tiramisu Gelato
4. Cookies & cream
5. Green tea & chai tasty too
and many others too hard to name. The decision-making process after you step into the store is always PAINFUL b.c. of all the options!
I've also had a tasty shakes with blend-ins & also a banana split there, if u can believe it (who gets those anymore???)!
I likes buying fresh and pre-packed pints to get punches on me frequent buyer's card! I think open 'til 10 PM most nights!Listed in: Sweet Treats - Me Likes 'em!

You know I hate to be a conformist, but I suppose this place really does what it does well enough to get it 5 stars: I have no complaints.
I don't really feel like ice cream often, since usually when I eat it I feel like I need to run 15 miles or so to get that sort of sugar-high feeling to go away, but that aside, the ice cream they do have here is homemade, tastes great, and for a price that won't burst your piggy bank.
I've known a few people who have worked here and they all were quite nice, even letting me sample for free several times. Hey, the store makes so much money as it is, they are free to hand out a little love every now and then.
This place is so good you might want to regulate yourself though, unless you want that early stroke/heart attack -

Last night, after a few drinks and other libations, about halfway through Super Troopers, my friend busted out a fresh pint of Glacier's "Birthday Cake" Ice Cream.
This sh!t is no joke. As I said upon filling my third bowl, it is like having a birthday party in your mouth. Clowns, Unicorns, Bouncy Castle, and all. I think some people might not be able to handle Birthday Cake Ice Cream...it is that good.

I received a nice message from the owner of Glacier. I just wanted to share. What nice people!!! Not only is the ice cream to die for...but the staff and owner make it an even better experience. Here's what he said...

Sooo after my 5th or 6th visit I got smart, cup? cone? naw give me a pint! For $10 you can secure yourself 3 prepacked pints. Ridiculous I know. These guys are pushing a seriously major product so get that tongue ready 'cuz it's gonna be out knocked out for days. Overloaded by raspberry and chocolate, or chocolate and hazelnut.
And like any good pusher they always seem to be open, always temping me late at night as I drive past. I expect to drive past only to see the dark exterior, but instead I see that bright shining glow that gets my taste buds excited, all it takes is those 4 neon letters - O P E N -

This review is dedicated to one of the workers at Glacier named Daisy.
This worker was so adorable! When we walked in to the store tonight to grab some dessert, Daisy greeted us with a smile and was super cheerful. I love it when I encounter people who are like that. While I went to their bathroom (which btw, was pretty clean), the fiance asked Daisy if he could try a few flavors and she was more than happy to help. She knew that we were a little hesitant about asking her to try out more flavors but she told us, "Don't worry about asking to try out flavors, you can try as many as you want!"
Her personality totally made us smile while we were in the store. She congratulated us for our engagement when she saw my ring and was very professional at doing her job.
The ice cream and gelato were wonderful, by the way. This place is just great.
Daisy, keep up the good work!Listed in: When you're on PMS...

Lemon gelato is hands down the most spectacular flavor of all the yum flavors.
The regular-old vanilla ice cream is so good it's our second favorite - no bland sugary yellow milk ice here.
Everything coffee and chocolate here has crisp, bright flavor.
The pistachio ice cream - yum! The raspberry gelato - double-yum!
It's really hard to go wrong. (Nutella gelato, not my favorite...)
Don't waste your money buying cones/cups - It's nearly the same price to get a pint, and if an outing is what you seek, just sit on down in the store and eat the pint right there. You won't be alone. -
Review from John B.
Man this place is awesome. Glacier's has a cool hippy-ish vibe inside kind of like Ben & Jerry's, except B&J's is like a G-rated hippy influence and this is more PG-13, if that makes any sense. It probably doesn't. But who cares? Anyhow, about the ice cream...
I tried the banana caramel crunch which was really good, but in the end I couldn't say no to the "death by chocolate" flavor. It was really dark, kind of like the Guinness of ice creams, and had all these tasty chocolate chunks in it. There was a chocolate raspberry truffle flavor that looked really interesting as well.
They also have gelato and smoothies. The ceiling is covered in tapestries, the walls are done up with lots of paintings of Bob Marley, and then there's a giant "find the 7 enchanted gnomes" painting. I could only find 1. I have no idea where the other 6 are hiding. Those gnomes are tricky little bastards. Maybe to find the other gnomes I needed some of what the other people in this place were having, if you know what I mean... -

After 4 years in Boulder I moved away about 9 months ago and I still crave Glacier and Half-Fast. My favorite combination. MMMMMMM..... this icecream is TO DIE FOR.
Most of the people who work there are awesome: one time i got free ice cream for doing an interpretive dance of what chocolate banana looks like, and the coupons in the school books are great.
Some of my favs:
Raspberry Chocolate Truffle. (omg i love this)
Chai (amazing yet light)
Green Tea (even lighter, fresh)
Ginger (now im really starting to sound like a boulder-ite)
Peanut Butter Chocolate (so creamy)
Chocolate banana crunch something
Raspberry chocolate chunk
okay, i've never tasted a bad flavor...... -

Best...Ice cream......ever.
Seriously, if this ice cream was a man, I would have long ago stolen it away to be mine forever. It's rich and creamy and super flavorful. A few of us went to get some ice cream and every single one of us walked away completely satisfied. We went at kind of a weird hour so we were the only ones that were in there, but it ended up being awesome because they let us sample TONS of flavors. I ended up getting the 'Funky Donkey' and 'Raspberry chocolate chip' ice creams mixed together. 'Funky Donkey' is a creamy peanut butter ice cream with crushed up oreos in it. Heaven on my little tastebuds!!!! And you may think that mixing peanut butter ice cream with a berry ice cream is just crazy, but it seriously tasted just like a pb&j sandwich, minus the bread. It was so crazy delicious.
The ice cream is super rich, so it's okay if you don't get the biggest size. Actually, you'd probably get sick from it. I felt a little sick after eating my medium sized one, but that may be because I'm slightly lactose intolerant. But it's a heck of a lot of ice cream for $4!!!!
You won't be disappointed, promise =) -

Oh nooooo - had to downgrade one star. Finally got the chance to try funky donkey, and it wasn't as magical as what I'd expected. Hmmmm - too much anticipation?
Anyhow, was in town visiting and for a tourney, so I treated myself to Glacier 3 days in a row. (yeah, I know: oink oink!). The f.d. was good, not fabulous. Now the coconut chocolate melt - THAT was excellent. And I got my standby Key Lime pie the second and third days. Still very good, but for some reason a bit meltier than before, and I felt like I had to inhale the scoops before I was wearing them all over my shirt. In the freezer, it (and a few other flavors) even looked melty on the top part. Maybe the heat? Or the freezer wasn't working too well? Who knows.2 Previous Reviews: Show all »

Great ice cream! When you're craving a little sundae action, go for it. Milkshakes are good and the ice cream is always tasty. Great ice cream. It reminds me of Ashley's Ice Cream a local chain from back East in New Haven County.
Note that coupons are specific to locations and a coupon good at the Longmont locale is only good there (as its apparently franchised and separately owned). -

I love ice cream and this place combines creative flavors, a funky personality, and creamy goodness. Every time I'm in Boulder, I try to stop in for some scoops. My favorite is funky donkey, because peanut butter and chocolate rock my world, but am constantly impressed by the decadent options. Coconut chocolate melt, rice krispie treat, and black raspberry chocolate melt are also amazing.

Zee best ice cream in Ze verld! seriously. And I (and my friends) consider me an ice cream monster/afficianado.
Its always a stressing situation going in there because choosing flavors is frightening. I always want to branch out and try something new, but always default to the same combination (2 scoops in a waffle cone, to be exact) of the funky donkey, peanut butter blast, peanut butter chocolate, and /or caramel coffee crunch. -

It is dangerous to live around the corner from Glacier on Baseline and Foothills. Once you experience their amazing gelato, you will never go back to other brands or places. My fave is the chocolate mousse gelato. The very friendly staff will let you taste anything you want, but this often doesn't help make your decision any easier. You will certainly find many flavors that satisfy your tastebuds!
Great gift idea: You can purchase a year's worth of pints for anyone who loves a tasty treat. The staff will give you a gift certificate that your recipient can redeem for a pint every month for a year. You can't go wrong with a gift like that!!! -

Best ice cream in Boulder, and among the best gelatos I've tasted, period. I didn't really want to like it, as I'm still ticked off my favorite gelato place in Old Town Arvada closed- but, sulking be damned, I loved it. I can't get enough of gelato ever since being turned onto it by the little old lady who owned that gelato shoppe in Old Town, which is now a quilting shop. Stupid quilts.
The sorbets looked fantastic, too- I got a tiny scoop of sorbet for my pooch, and he gives it five stars. At least, he will when he gets done shredding the empty cup into confetti. He seems to be frustrated with its emptiness. He didn't let me have a taste, but that's only fair since I wasn't sharing my chocolate gelato with him. Even if dogs could have chocolate, it was just too darn good. -

Cute little ice-cream shop in Boulder, CO. We stopped by here after having our dinner down the street. I had pistachio and it was good but not as good as what I can find at home. If you are ever in Tucson, (who would go there?) I highly recommend Frost Gelato Shoppe. Tthey are taking things to the next level with the gelato master from Italy himself.
