My wife and I had a near-perfect experience with "Girls Who Surf" during our recent trip to Waikiki. The only reason why I can't call it a perfect experience has absolutely nothing to do with the company itself. It was originally my wife's idea to take the lesson (I was happy to oblige, as it's something I've always wanted to try as well), but because she had suffered an ill-timed injury to her ribs during a lacrosse tournament over the weekend, she wasn't able to fully enjoy the experience.
Interestingly enough, we had a male instructor for our lesson (Aukai). Guess we were expecting a female, but it certainly made no difference whatsoever in the quality of the instruction. After picking us up at our hotel, Aukai got us set up with our necessary gear (surf tops and shoes) and taught us how to get to our feet on the board while on the beach. He was incredibly helpful, patient and encouraging, even under the somewhat difficult circumstances of my wife's unfortunate injury. He was very much concerned with her well-being and throughout the lesson, he consistently made sure that she was okay to continue. She was able to get up on her feet to ride a couple of nice waves, but the paddling and the "push-up" motion required to get onto her feet was just too much to bear.
Next time we go, we'll be sure to take a lesson with "Girls Who Surf" BEFORE the lacrosse tournament! I would highly recommend this company to anyone looking to learn how to surf while visiting Honolulu. Can't wait to return to take another lesson...
I took a private lesson from Cecilia on Saturday morning and had a blast! I actually caught some waves! I have definately caught the surfing bug and will be taking another lesson with Girls Who Surf soon!
*Oh on a side note, make sure you apply enough and the right kind of sunscreen. Mine apparently washed off after an hour and part of my backside and thighs totally burned. My own fault! Ouch!
I want to send out an obrigado to Cecilia and mahalo to Sean for a GREAT surf lesson. Ruthie (first-timer) rode so many waves the surfboard began to take on the impression of her feet. Girls Who Surf offers first-rate instruction from pickup to dropoff. It is all inclusive...reef shoes, surfboards, leashes, shirts (to prevent friction rashes). Make sure to get a T-shirt. Highly recommended! [Ruthie here]: Girls Who Surf is excellent!!! Cecilia and Sean made it an absolutely wonderful experience. They were attentive to all of us making sure we stayed safe at all times and caught that perfect wave and actually got up. They made all the difference in giving us a fun, successful experience. They also were helpful with tips of places to go to explore on the island. It couldn't have been better. Awesome job!
I took surf lessons with these ladies last month when I was in Hawaii. They are great! I have taken lessons once before and these ladies blew that experience out of the water. I can't even tell you how many waves I caught. They pick you up at your hotel, take you somewhere away from the packed beaches and you get a ton of water time after some on shore instruction. Also, they are great with quesitons over the phone before you sign up. I will only ever take lessons from them when I am in the islands!!!!

I've taken several surfing lesson while visiting Hawaii. All of them were just ok. I took 4 straight days with these guys! It was, by far, the best experience I've had. They were all very patient and encouraging. I'm also afraid of the open water (hey you don't know what's under there). We went to a nice secluded area not far from Waikiki which was great. You weren't worried about killing someone while you were out there. They were very accomodating and just wonderful people. And yes, you will stand several times! I highly recommend this group!
I took my first surf lesson every with Girls Who Surf last year, and when I returned to Hawai'i this year, I took 3 more lessons. That shows what a great company this is! The instructors are super friendly and totally make you feel safe and confident. What I love most, is that they push you on your first couple of waves, so you can immediately feel what it's like to ride a wave, in order to stay motivated and excited! I have lots of love for Girls Who Surf!!!!
