You see this place everywhere in Chicago and you've heard about deep dish stuffed crust so one must really try this place out. I had high expectations for this place since I've never had anything like it before. I wasn't too impressed with the place though. Don't get me wrong it's good, but I'm not crazy about it. It's tasty, oozing with tons of cheese and lots of toppings, but one slice is too much to eat and after some time, the cheese gets a little tiring. It's a must try if you're from out of town like me, but not something I can eat everyday.
This is not why people love deep dish.
I am partial to thin but, lets take a deeper look.
The original was a mile or so down the road, they closed that location to create the new concept some years back. I went there as a kid and remember it being a family owned neighborhood joint. This place still survives on the momentum from 30 years ago, and it shouldn't. There is nothing left of those memories. This place is very low on the scale of tolerable food offenses.
Service is lackluster, the menu reads like a washed out list of Chitown faves, unfortunately they have been so watered down by the chain concept, I can find no reason whatsoever to dine here.
If you are from out of town and are staying at a hotel nearby, don't be tempted, you might as well by some frozen pizza and heat it up under your car hood. There are other places and other choices, don't be tempted.
A little on the fence on Giordano compared to Lou's. Giordano is definitely more cheesier than Lou's, which I love, but the crust is a little bit too pastry flaky-like to me, which I don't. One piece was enough to get me full.
On the plus side, you can order a pizza to-go, half baked! Cool. For some reason, it tasted a lot better when I had it at home than at the actual restaurant... hmmm.. I will definitely have to give this Chicago-style pizzeria another go when I'm back. Good, friendly service too.
I am completely in shock.
After ordering dozens of Giordano's Pizzas over many, many years, I think I am never going to order another pizza from them because of their bad customer service. We ordered a pizza. They brought the WRONG one. I called and said that we didn't get our pizza, and they told me that I would just have to ORDER ANOTHER one, and they would do me the favor of taking 5 dollars off!!!!! CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT?
Some people say its hard to love more than one pizza place but Giordanos takes the cake in Chicago Pizza. Good choice for some food and fun.
Good pizza the meat was tender and very juicy and would go back again for more. It was perfectly cooked and made me want more and more of this pie. Server was very nice.
I'm not usually a fan of deep dish pizza but every once in a blue moon when I'm in Chicago I order this. I had it here and it was completely great! I'm still not sold on the crust style, but this chain does it right and it was delish this once in a while. The crust was hot out of the oven and smelled and tasted so much better than I could've imagined it. They pile so much cheese on here and the oil from the cheese soaks into the bread. It is great. The only reason I hacked a point off was because the service was kinda meh and it's kind of a douchey local chain at this point. The food was as good as it's legend.
Great food! This time I had enough time to sit and relax, enjoy the appetizer. Sometimes you go places and are put in such a rush. After a long day this was very nice and the food did not disappoint either.
I recommend this place for those staying in the area for the airport and even those living here. During the week there wasn't any wait and I liked that too. Very good service and attentive. Thank you!
Waaay overpriced, and they include 18% gratuity even on small parties, and thank you with mediocre service.
I ordered the cheese, onion, and pineapple pizza. Maybe meat eaters have it better, but this thing contained a block of cheese per slice. It was the smallest pizza they had, and at $18, was no bargain. The taste was mediocre. Blech. I'd go elsewhere.
Of all the Chicago-style pizza places, Giordano's is my favorite. I like stuffed pizza, not deep dish, and I'm not a fan of cornmeal crusts. Whenever friends and family from out of town come to visit and ask for Chicago-style pizza, this is where we bring them. The thing about Giordano's, though, is that there's not a whole lot on the menu that's anywhere near as good as the pizza. We've tried just about everything in the way of salads and appetizers range from disappointing to bordering on inedible. We just don't order them anymore, strictly pizza.
This location is consistently busy with local families, as well as conventioneers and other business travelers staying at the nearby hotels. Weekdays aren't bad, but be prepared to wait for a table on weekend nights. We've made reservations in the past, and have still had to wait. Even on a night when they're slammed, though, the waitstaff has always hustled and been very polite. This location in particular has many English-Spanish bilingual hosts/hostesses and waitstaff, should that be a concern.
One of the best things about this location in particular is that it is across the street from Midway airport. After dinner, chill a bit in the parking lot, and watch planes make their landings at closer range than you're likely to see anywhere else. You'll hear them coming.
Steve A. took me and Kristin C. here a couple years ago and boy was it good! the crust was amazing! I thought the deep dish pizza lived up to its hype! I will come back here again the next time I am in Chi-Town!
We had leftovers and they were delicious the next couple days haha!
I give it a 4.5!
Most Yelpers have something against chain restaurants. For me I'm not that much of a snob that I don't enjoy a good chain now and then.
See that? *Good* chain restaurants. Not dog food serving Applebee's. Giordanos is high up there as far as quality chains. They don't have a ridiculous number of restaurants and overall I've had good experiences with them.
The stuffed pizza is damn good. It takes a while to make but well worth it. The quality of the mozzarella definitely makes this place stand out.
What I was most impressed with though was the appetizers. I LOVE fried calamari. Large rings, lightly battered, with a bit of lemon zest. That stuff sure hits the spot. The chopped chicken salad was also quite tasty. Lots of oil and vinegar, generous for even 3-4 people.
Overall a damn good experience. Sorry for all the lactose intolerant asians though. Each slice of stuffed pizza has like 4x the cheese of a normal slice :)
This was my first time having REAL deep dish pizza. I must admit I was a little nervous about trying it but I really did enjoy it. The pizza was very, VERY cheesy which is what I like. It didn't have too much or too little sauce..it was just right. The pizza is HUGE and worth every penny. I went with my boyfriend and we dined in. We had the fried zucchini sticks as an appetizer and they were pretty good as well.
So I haven't eaten here in over a year. I recently connected through Chicago (ORD, but still), and I thought of two pizza places vividly in memory. First was Giaordano's. The stuffed pizzas are great! Make sure you call in and order, since the pizzas do take some time to make. The crust was like a pie crust. Crumbly, buttery, and flaky. the stuffed pizza is definitely an experience to try! All the toppings stay nicely in the crusts (yes, two crusts).
If you were wondering, the second pizza place I thought of was Lou Malnati's, but I go there more for their salads than their pizzas (not that the pizzas aren't great, though!).
every time i come through, i have to order two deep dish pizzas. fly them back to los angeles or the herd will tear me apart & possibly leave me stranded at lax.
hear the same lame jokes at midway from what seems like every possible ata guard.
so worth the consumption of your daily calories in those two slices.
margherita with fresh garlic is pretty epic.
I had to try Chicago Style pizza in Chicago. So, on my recent visit to the city I stopped at the closest and most recommended (by locals) as the best Chicago Style pizza...Giordano's.
Place - Near the Midway airport and my Marriott hotel (which is fairly new and had excellent service) was in a unique location...right near the runway where the jets land. After getting over the fact that planes were skimming my head as I walked to the door I entered to meet a cheerful hostess. She directed me to a table area that had classic 1940ish Italian/ pizza restaurant styling (warm colors and dark wood).
Food - a lot. I ordered the famous deep-dish Chicago style pizza with Pepperoni and Popeye(Spinach). I ordered a small which was said to feed 1-2. It was more like 2-3. This "small" was huge and explained the price $19.15. I also ordered a small side salad for $3.00 which was very reasonable for mixed greens, tomato, carrot and a hot pepper. The pizza had a tasty sauce that fit the style of pizza very well. The crust was thick and a little dry but was not greasy. Due to the size of the slices (and weight) I could only eat 2 of the 5 slices. I took the remainder back to the hotel for later.
Likes:
- Chicago
- Sauce (nice combo of flavors)
- Cheese, lots of cheese
- Friendly staff
Dislikes:
- Too much of a good thing
- Location, thought I might get a buzz cut courtesy of South West
- Calories (had to be 4,000 per slice)
Overall a nice experience. Like going to Philly and getting a cheese steak. You just got to do it.
Still hands down the best deep dish pizza I have EVER had.:) I want some right now just thinking about it!!
Best crust ever - this is more than just pizza; this is like a pizza quiche! I recommend the mushroom. YUMMMM!
I love this Giordano's. I usually eat here after landing at Midway. They're usually playing 80s music which I love. I like their deep dish, but I actually like their thin crust better. It's one of my favorite pizzas anywhere. Their salads aren't too shabby either, actually. And they have root beer and restaurants with root beer get extra brownie points with me.
This is the location I was at the first time I tried authentic Chicago style pizza. I think I died and went to heaven. Nothing compares to it. The stuffed pizza was absolutely to die for. Our table had a vegetarian and a combination pizza. YUMMY. I don't know how they do it, but the slices held together without all sorts of stuff oozing out. Unlike the Lou Malnati's I tried.
I may have to order to have shipped to me in California.
Alright. So I had a small 10" cheese deep dish with italian sausage as my "topping"/filling. Good stuff. BUT because I paying more for experience then real taste. I suppose regular customers pay $15+ for personal pizzas but really? I would only pay that much for top shelf pizza in NY, which equates to me saying that NY pizza for me is personally better. Deep-dish is great but I would not be able to eat that much cheese. So much food that I brought half my pie back with me on my flight to NY. haha.
there's is one of these in almost every neighborhood in Chicago! i love the deep dish here! the thin crust is pretty good too and so are the mozzarella sticks. yummy!
Considering the two other reviews of this location, and all of the reviews of the other locations are four stars and above, I'm guessing my experience was a fluke. But jesus christ....my experience with this place was horrible.
On my second visit to Chicago, I still had yet to try real Chicago deep dish pizza, so the BF and I ordered delivery the night before we flew out to our Midway hotel. Not only did they charge a delivery fee (and, seriously, who does this with pizza?), but our order took nearly two hours to arrive (they quoted one hour)--to a very unhappy couple who had to fly out at 6:00am the next day and were thus kept up past their bed time. The pizza was disgusting....so bad, that I couldn't even finish one piece...and that's something for a girl who hates to go to bed hungry. It was greasy and the ingredients weren't fresh and the crust was dry and tasteless.
That was in July and I'm still jilted enough to write this review. But I also wanted to note--and I'm happy to report--that I just got back from another trip to Chicago, where I was lucky enough to have some of Edwardo's stuffed spinach pizza. Fucking yum. My faith in Chicago pizza has been restored.
I went to Chicago and ate at 3 different pizza restaurants within 4 days. Pizzeria Uno and Giordano's were excellent! Gino's East was good.
Of the 3, Giordano's had the best cheese. The amount and taste were both excellent! The crust was really thick and very tasty. The toppings were good and the sauce was pretty good. All 3 restaurants did not offer salami as a topping choice. I live in California and that is weird to me. In California, almost all pizza restaurants (Chicago-style, NY-style, and others) offer salami as a choice. Anyways, I think salami is better than pepperoni and should be offered.
I really liked their pizza (Grade: A-), but Pizzeria Uno is better. I think Giordano's is way better than Gino's East and Zachary's in California. Next time I visit Chicago, I'll try Lou Malnalti's Pizzeria.
This Chicago-style pizza was so good we wanted to share it with our family. So we ordered frozen stuffed combination pizzas that you can bake at home from Giordanos and brought them home with us to hand out as our Chi-town souvenirs. Everyone loved it!
2nd only to Lou Malnati's for stuffed crust in my opinion. The crust is buttery deliciousness! If you want to try Chicago pizza, is definitely a good intro.
Gus and I wanted some authentic Chicago-style pie. We went to a few of the places others recommended. We ended up here because the other two places had lines a half-mile long. The pizza was really good and worth the cab ride! It was cold and blustery (a blizzard in April- swear) and some hot pizza was perfect. Each slice must have weighed 2 lbs. I prefer thin crust, but can now say I've had my slice of Chicago-style deep dish. Mmm.
Best stuffed pizza in Chicago. Would've given them 5 stars, but there's a few times (mainly when there's a packed house) where my pizza has been sloppily prepared.
One of the most "touristy" pizza places in Chicago. Not to downplay the fact that they do have some outstanding stuffed pizza (and their thin crust is pretty decent as well.). This particular location is always busy, probably because it is so close to the airport. The service was friendly, even to the rowdy bunch I had gone with. There is only one thing holding it back from a five star rating- The outrageously overpriced alcohol. It cost me near five dollars for a bottle of Budweiser.
The pizza at this place is consistently disappointing. The mozzarella is like a brick, and the tomato sauce tastes straight from a can. If this is what Chicago pizza is, then no thanks.
Great pizza if you like lots of cheese and like to use a fork and knife to eat a pizza. Service can be slow, but well worth the wait.
5 stars for service!!! I've eaten here and had atke out and both times they have the best service here. Oh and of course the pizza here is delicious both their stuffed and thin crust. Great place for eating in or taking out!
I love Giordano's pizza. When I was living in LA, I told everyone about how Giordano's is the best pizza ever, and of course, many people asked me to bring them some. Since I usually flew out of Midway when I came back to Chicago to visit, I ordered from Giordano's at Midway frequently. They were always very nice about half baking and freezing a pizza for me to take on the plane. When I moved back to Chicago and had some friends come visit, I took them to this Giordano's location before they flew home, and they loved it. The wait staff was very nice and the pizza was perfect.
