This is my first chicago deep dish experience EVER.
We were told we'd have to wait 45 minutes but my friend flirted w/ the host and we got seated in 15 minutes. yes!!!
Got the deep dish with sausage, peppers, mushrooms....omg SO GOOD!!! wow. flaky crust. i want more.
Now...we made this mistake of ordering their THIN CRUST. what was i thinking?1?! thin crust in chicago?! i know i know. DON'T GET THIN CRUST. it tastes like sh*t. I'd take frozen pizza ANY DAY over that nastiness.
Giordano's, why did you disappoint me so?! Two things I wanted to experience in Chicago. Two things! Liquid Nitrogen Ice cream from Icream, and Deep Dish PIzza.
I'd decided on a personal piece with mushrooms and spinach. The server informs us that they're (already) backed up and that its gonna take 45 mins to cook a new pizza. She then tells us they have some personals pre-made. Since we were on a time crunch, we opted for the ready made guys. The inside did not disappoint - it was warm, ooey gooey, tomatoey, spinachy goodness. The crust on the other hand...was a hot, no, lukewarm mess. This crust was hard as a rock!
Yikes.
Bottom line, I am glad I experienced Chicago-style pizza, but I say Zachary's is superior to this place bar none!
Wow! now that was a deep-dish pizza! So large, and so cheesy. It really was an eye-opening experience for a first-time Chicago visitor. Luckily, there are many locations around town, to spread the wealth of their signature dish.
This place is always crowded around dinner, expect a 30-40 minute wait for small groups. Ingeniously, they allow you to pre-order your pizzas because deep-dish ones take 45 mins to cook.
You know those pizza commercials, where the slice comes out of the box with the cheese sticking to the other slices? that doesn't happen in real life. Well it happens with these guys! It's like your toppings are floating in a sea of melted mozzarella. Once it hits your plate, the whole thing starts oozing about. My buddy and I got a small with 1/2 tropical delight, and the other 1/2 Super Vegi. It had 6 slices and we got through 2 slices each. We were both pretty full at that point, but we couldn't help but fill ourselves with one more slice.
In the end the pizza is about $20, which is a great deal. Giordano's is definitely my favorite stuffed pizza place in Chicago after going to Ginos East and Pizanos. I look forward to coming back in the future.
Came here a bit after eight pm, with a good size of crowds inside still. I ordered the medium sized pizza for two people, which was too much. The pizza was fairly sizable, plus I ordered two pitchers of beer, which I almost finished before the pizza even arrived.
The pizza itself was tasty, but I didn't have much room for pizza with liters of beer swirling around in my stomach. The service was decent, overall if I'm offered to be back here again I would not refuse.
I had their deep dish pizza on a previous trip to Chicago, and I was excited to share it with the rest of my family. The pizzas are quite large, so don't believe their portion suggestions. (Seriously, their small pizza is NOT for 1-2 people!) Still, the pizza was sooo good and satisfying. I have never had better deep-dish pizza anywhere.
One thing: you have to expect a long wait. The pizza takes a while, but you can order early and help yourself to a salad in the meantime.
The verdict: Check it out!
I know this is weird, but we actually only went here for a drink. It was Labor Day, and someone I knew wanted to stare perilously at the street 110 storeys below from a glass box... why, I do not know, but it meant I got to have a glass of wine so go ahead, peril away, as far as I'm concerned... Nothing in downtown other than here appeared to be open. Thankfully, they have a bar and it has wine.
Ways we entertained ourselves:
Reading the signs ('thou shalt eat pizza') and generally appreciating the decor
The till machine which seems to predict impending hordes of people besieging the bar for a drink, which seems unlikely. We figured out how the system worked, and got excited when our two little blobs went blue (we paid) and had martini glasses on (we ignore your commandment, Giordano, with impunity, and shall not eat pizza today).
Sending back a glass which was filthy with lipstick on and pretending to find it hilaaaarious when the server said 'oh sorry, not your shade?' ha. ha. h... no.
Betting whether the man next to us was going to eat an entire deep dish pizza and have a coronary while watching the football. He started off well, sawing the crusts with menace and determination.. then the wheezing started... then something exciting (allegedly) happened in the football... I thought we would need a defribrillator... the cutting slowed and the chewing was laborious... But thankfully, the game ended. Two thirds of a pizza gone - astonishing! It did smell delicious, but I've tackled one before and I managed.... um... one slice. Well done that man.
Guessing why all the liquor bottles were draped in clingfilm (to guard against the impending hordes, presumably).
Marvelling at the Grand Marnier shot machine.
Sounds better than standing in a death-trap 110 storeys up, no? No? Oh, ok. We had fun. Seriously, the atmosphere in here is nice, there are TVs, and the pizza looked and smelled like authentic Giordano's deliciousness, so I can see no reason not to return if I need a pizza or a glass of wine.
Lunch...fast...deep dish...$6...
It was definitely worth the 6 block hike for lunch...the personal deep dish literally came out in two minutes...
My suggestion is to arrive right at 11 because this place fills up fast...otherwise, $6 and a 6 block walk will turn Giordano's into a normal lunch spot for me...
Loved it! Even though I had to wait like 40+ minutes or so before I could savor the greatness of Chicago-style pizza. Best pizza ever! :)
Appetizers and margaritas eased up the wait time for me. Don't go when you are super hungry 'cause you'll just be pissed at the wait time although you probably should have known that this type of pizza does take a while to make.
Ordered a personal deep dish at the counter. I was expecting it to be made to order (it's almost eight bucks), but the cashier just went over to a heater box thingy and got a premade one. Come on - even Wendy's and McDonald's make their food on order nowadays!
Not only was the crust as thick as a normal [medium] sized pizza, this making the personal deep dish about 1/3 crust, it tasted like it had been sitting for awhile. May as well have ordered from Sbarros and saved some money.
Things may be different with a larger pizza or with a sit-down group though.
Adequate deep dish pizza and local beers (Goose Island), though I'm pretty sure the waitress' head nearly exploded when she asked how everything was and I told her I'd had better Chicago-style pizza in Oakland.
I'm glad I waited until I was finished with my Chicago vacation to write this review, because Giordano's gained a star for being the best deep dish I had in the city. That's not saying much, though, because for my taste, I've had better deep dish at that national chain that you guys spawned. You know the "One."
We ordered fried calamari to pass the 40 minute deep dish wait, but we might have been better off starving ourselves. The calamari was way overcooked, and there were almost no tentacles on the plate. It was served with a pool of ketchup. Ketchup?! Don't you have some kind of pizza sauce back there? Come on, don't tell me nobody has thought of that.
When the pizza arrived, we were pleased. I think I was accused of not liking the pizza, but really I did not like parts of the pizza. The pizza as a whole was very satisfying. I think Girodano's sauce is too sweet. I'm more of a fan of salty, acidic tomato sauce. The crust was buttery and delicious, but was powdery and gave the impression of being dry. But again, as a complete package, the pizza was very good. We ordered the Special, with sausage peppers and onions. I liked the cheese a lot, but as I ate more and more, the peppers became too overpowering and I had to pull them out in order to get the pizza down.
Without the calamari, I would have given four stars, easy. In reality that disappointing calamari took up some serious stomach real estate that could have been better utilized finishing my final slice.
Best deep dish overall one can find in the loop. Never fails to be outstanding in every way a deep dish place can be. Crust is flaky and crisp. Sauce, light and tomatoey. Cheese by the bucket load. Beer, about $4.50 a pint, eh. Filling, definitely. Shared a small with my girlfriend and walked away with two pieces for lunch the next day. The small 10" will provide a couple with two pieces, enough to be extremely full. Usual wait for pizza, 30-40, nice historic Italian decor, and friendly-ish staff. Go get stuffed.
My family and our good friends stopped in after spending a torturing 2 hours in the Sears Tower waiting for our 15 minutes on the Sky Deck. We came in just in time for their lunch specials, personal deep-dish pizzas for 6 dollars.
We were seated in an extra LONG booth, which came in handy when our 8 month old son fell asleep on the booth seats (super adorable). We all ordered personal deep dishes all around and had salad while we waited.
About 20 minutes later, our pizzas showed up and I was salivating from the scent alone. I'm surprised my son slept through all the noisy chaos and our sounds of pleasure over the pizza. Just the right amount of sauce and toppings, super crusty crust. At first, you'd think it was too small to really feed you but, oh my god, this little 5-inch pizza filled me up for a good 8 hours that day.
Well worth it! I definitely intend to come back and try a bigger pizza and see just how much I can handle ;-)
Of course I like Giordanos. Good solid Deep Dish pizza experience, just the right amount of sauce on your pie. The crust is nothing extremely special compared to some of the Chicago pizza joints, but still is cripsy and makes for an overall good experience.
Lunch specials in the loop are excellent.
We went here because of rave reviews and because it was two blocks away from Chicago's Union Station. We ordered a a Caesar salad for two and it was very good. Although the waitress said that we would be getting our pizza in 35-45 minutes, I'm fairly sure we got our pizza in about 25 minutes. My husband and I ate a delicious 10-inch deep dish, but unfortunately we couldn't finish it all. The waitress was attentive and refilled our drinks regularly. While my husband prefers Lou Malnati's, I think Giordano's is my favorite.
I actually really loved this place!! Basically as soon as my friends and I got off the airplane, we went to eat here. Chicago deep-dish pizza is always so hyped up but unlike the Chicago Cubs this year, it was not a disappointment (yes that's a shot...). We had no idea what to expect, so we ordered both a thin crust pizza and a deep-dish, and both were fantastic. The deep-dish was kind of like a lasagne pizza and it definitely is amazingly filling so be careful not to go too crazy with your ordering which we were definitely guilty of!! But you will for sure love it!!
These guys seem to be cool with the idea of a small pizza weighing about the same as an XL in California. I'm okay with that, but I can't finish a "small" despite a scotch apertif. Very good overall.
Last Monday was Aaron S's and mine anniversary, we wanted to go to a special dinner, but he got off work too late for us to hit our favorite sushi place, Giordano's was just a few steps from the Sears Tower (He works there) so this is where we would up having our dinner.
We were greeted in a pretty timely manner, and sat down pretty quick as well. It being a Monday evening after six they were not crowded at all. Our waiter came by and handed us menus and water and gave us some time to make our decisions. Neither of us was up to pizza so we went with pasta dishes, and an appetizer of chicken tenders. He ordered Alfredo, and I got lasagna. We were informed that our dishes came with soup or salad were given the soup choices.
There was no long wait for food and our tenders were brought out quick and still very hot. They were juicy with a good amount of breading, not my favorite tenders, but they did the trick. Soups came out next, the waiter made the mistake of saying the soup was broccoli cheddar when it was really potato cheddar, he apologized and made sure we still wanted it. He handled it well, and it was no big deal to us either way. The soup had a good cheese taste to it without it being too cheesy, so it was more like a cream of potato with cheese added, pretty standard, but not bad.
Aaron S. and I had a little bit of chatting time while we waited, and the room was quiet enough were we could hear each other without shouting.
The pasta's were good. My lasagna had the right amount of meat to cheese to sauce, and wasn't soggy or bland. The sauce was a tad sweet for my usual taste but still hit the spot. Aaron offered me a taste of his Alfredo, and it had a nice little kick of garlic added to it, and his noodles weren't over done either.
All in the food did the trick, nothing really stood out about it though, it was just good comfort Italian food.
What gives this place the fourth star, would have to been the service. Our waiter was friendly but did not hover, and kept up with our soda refills, and was generally quick and pleasant. He also corrected his one minor mistake very well, which takes a little bit of skill.
On my very first visit to Chicago, my boyfriend and I heard rave reviews about this place and of course had to give it a try since we were trying out all the Chicago-y foods.
The pizza was a beast! I've always heard Chicago style pizzas were thick but didn't fully understand it's cheesy capacity until I saw it. We ordered pepperoni and sausage for delivery (it was late and they were closing in 20 minutes). They delivered the pizza in 30 minutes (understandable since it takes time to cook the monster) and were so friendly. Between my boyfriend and I, we barely finished a small deep dish pizza and boy was it delicious! We ordered in the next night as well (=
Next time I'm in Chicago, I'll be here again to go for round three.
I was so excited to finally try Chicago-style deep dish pizza. Finding this place downtown was very easy. It was also convenient to know that it takes about half an hour for them to make the pizza so calling it in beforehand really sped things up. We were promptly seated and got our pizza within a few minutes. I have always been a big fan of thin crust pizza, but now I have a new found appreciation for deep dish. It is loaded with a ton of cheese, which I love along with plenty of meat. The crust is flaky and not like any thin crust texture that I have had in the past. A medium sized one could easily feed four people. Since we only had three, it was a struggle to finish the eight slices. I ended up eating two and a half before I had to throw in the towel. It's a good thing we didn't order any appetizers because it would have been over after one slice. Giodarno's is a solid restaurant for good deep dish pizza. Ah, hot Chicago pizza washed down with an ice cold Coke for lunch on a chilly afternoon downtown with good company. Life is good.
Fried appetizer combination was just what I needed to cheer me up (and make me sleepy). I love fried mushrooms. Pizza was spectacular as well, and I always order a whole pie - don't settle for those little quick personal pan pizzas at lunch time, for it's just not the same thing.
Goose Island harvest ale was on tap and hit the spot.
I had about an hour before I had to be at the Civic Opera House for the Andrew Bird show on 4/10/09.
It's a testament to either my amazing eating skills or the greatness of their pies that I housed 2 slices of Deep Dish here and made it to the show on time.
I say it was a combination of both. The pizza is nothing short of amazing. I had given myself carte blanche to eat with abandon in the city. After running around Chicago all day, I was starving and exhausted so I gave myself carte blanche to pig the fcku out.
I'm sure locals have their strong opinions on which Deep Dish place is the best, but as an East Coast transplant to California, I'm a thin crust-er at heart and not a Chicagoean DD expert.
Dear Deep Dish Pizza lovers and aspiring Chicago Pizza Tourists:
Giordano's is the McDonald's of Chicago deep dish pizza. Their thin crust is doughy and bland. The dough in their deep dish has way too much sugar in it. If you like safe, conservative and tasteless pizza, you might like G's (see Pizza Hut). But if you want flavor and quality, look to Gino's, Uno's and Lou Malnati's.
For some torturous godforsaken reason, the company I used to work for would order this shit over and over when there's Pat's, Aurellio's and Gino's nearby.
Btw, if you want some thin crust recommendations, PM me, and my answers will be mom & pop shops, not corporate crap. Hmmm...let's exit this review with "peace out!" (say it in Kip, Napoleon Dynamite's brother's voice)
This place gets jam-packed, but that's okay, since the food items come out more fresh. It was about a 30-minute wait, so not that bad. The service was efficient, and the stuffed pizza we ordered (half spinach, and half 'the Special') came out piping hot and stuffed our bellies. The 'Special' reminded me of the nice supreme over at the Costco's eats, but in a stuffed form - it's very delicious, with mushrooms, green peppers, sausage, and onions. With a dash of Parm cheese and hot chili flakes, you have yourself a very filling meal. Parking is a pain, so take the public transportation.
I love Giordano's pizza. Let me just start if off by saying this is not a review on the product as the pizza is good - I recommend stuffed spinach and mushroom. Absolutely delicious. You should also try the Spinach salad with blue cheese dressing. Yum again.
Now what this review about however is the customer service at this particular downtown location. I just had the unfortunate experience of having to order pizza for 25 people at work. Having never worked in the pizza industry I did not know how many pizza's I'd need. The woman who answered the phone from the beginning was rude. Like indescribably rude. Every common question I asked her like "how many pizzas do I need to order and what size for 25 people" she'd sigh like crazy and then spit a short response. I asked her if they could bring utensils and plates, again she's like "for how many people?" I'm like uh...25....she's like "fine."
I felt like I was on a 900 number paying for every minute of her precious time -- Hey lady, give me a break, it's 9:30 AM. I'm about as happy to order these pizzas as you are to take my order, but you don't hear me giving you attitude...why not suck it up like I am and be at least cordial?
I'm sure the pizza will be fine as she will probably not be making it. And cheers to them delivering it because I really do not feel like stepping in this place.
My fav stuffed pizza of all time. I've had Bacino's and Lou Malnati's, Gino's East but when it comes to my fav deep dish/stuffed, it's Giordano's. They are consistently delicious. My favs are the stuffed sausage, stuffed special, or the stuffed veggie special. I've had the stuffed spinach and was not impressed. Also I'm not a fan of their thin crust. Their fried appetizers are pretty good, but the salads are bleh...
Save room in you stomach and just get the stuffed pizza, the rest is just mediocre filler.
I wish I could review their pizza, but unfortunately for my taste buds, my stomach can't handle pizza.
This location is right near my bf's work, so we go there fairly often when I come hang out with him on nights when he's working late.
We pretty much order the same thing: I get the chicken caesar salad (or just the caesar salad) and my bf gets the small portion of ravioli with marinara sauce. I ordered plain spaghetti with no butter from there twice (because my stomach can't handle butter and often can't handle sauce), and as per the norm when I order it this way, got such a funny look that I quit ordering it. Quick note to servers everywhere: If a customer has an order such as this, don't pull faces at them! You never know why they're ordering it that way.
Anyway, my bf always enjoys his ravioli. He has, on occasion, ordered the chicken alfredo, which he also enjoys. My salads are usually only ok, which is disappointing, but I've recently figured out how to make them good. The chicken they serve is cooked in some strange spices and just doesn't taste very good to me. Once I started ordering it without the chicken and with the sauce on the side, the salads were good. Before I did that, they overloaded on dressing, cheese, and croutons. They still overload on cheese and croutons, but the cheese is no biggie and I just remove the croutons. I've also had the minestrone soup here, and it was a disappointment. I don't hold it against them too much because I'm half Italian (and thus picky about any Italian food), but it doesn't have as much flavor as I'd like. It is a little tricky though because minestrone is a peasant soup with no actual recipe, so you can put pretty much whatever you want in it-just like Italian peasants did.
Also, their bread is delicious. Freshly cut and warm, we always make sure we get a basket of it when we get there. I'm also a fan of root beer, which many places don't have, so it's nice that they do and I can order it with my meal.
Service is generally good here unless it's a really busy touristy night, and then it's pretty slow. Mostly we don't go on super busy nights, so the service is pretty fast. Usually there's no wait, but we have on occasion had to wait a good 15 minutes. No biggie though, we use the time to chat.
This was my first jaunt into TRUE Chicago Deep Dish Pizza. It was good. The pizza crust was nice a crispy, like a thin crust. The toppings were plentiful and the cheesy was oozing. We got a small special, which was ridiculously large for two people. If you go here, come hungry and be prepared to wait. Pizzas take 35 minutes to cook.
I like my pizza the same way Lincoln park women like their bras. Stuffed.
A find Giordano's pizza to be the most efficient calorie transfusion system in the united states. I used to have a problem with being skinny, Giordanos solved this problem in mere months.
Deep Dish Take TWO!
Well folks, this pizza was definitely better than the stuff they served me at Gino's East, but I just have to accept that as much as I wanted to like deep dish i don't. I need someone to throw in a think slice of pizza and have it come out nice and toasty a few minutes later. Not an hour...like the deep dish we ordered here.
Okay, maybe it wasn't an hour, but it took about 45 minutes. We put in the order before we were even seated. Let's just put it that way. Aside from all that, I'm more of a sauce person, and really, sauce is the afterthought to a deepdish. It's too loaded with all the cheese and stuffings. I can't deal with it. Everything is backwards and I don't like it.
Service was really slow at this place. Everything took the poor guy an eternity to get, orders, drinks, soup, etc.
Don't know what else to say about it. I definitely will not be eating deep dish on my next trip to Chicago though!
My first deep dish pizza in Chicago.
I sampled the cheese, supreme, and vegetarian varieties. (Altogether consuming approximately 1.5 pieces)
The flavors were good across the board with a very nice tomato sauce. The ingredients seemed decent, yet I wish the sausage was a little more robust in flavor.
In the end, I am not a big fan. I prefer a thin-crusted and crispy pizza to a deep dish creation.
I see the appeal, but shall be sticking to NY style pizza.
This is tough; probably 3.5 stars instead of 4.
The location is odd to me as I feel like it could be easily passed up sitting next to the OTB, away from other "sit down" restaurants. You get the hustle and bustle of business men and women, but when you walk in, it's a much slower, family environment. Kinda threw me for a loop.
I got seated right away (at 5:45p on a Monday night), which was nice, but the hostess was very inaudible and not entirely pleasant. She walked me around the entire restaurant to finally seat me at a table (rather than a booth I asked for) that was towards the front of the restaurant in the middle of a crazy big family with small children and an out-of-town couple who kept trying to pawn their leftovers off to us. (They also asked where the nearest White Castle was. Seriously?!?! I told them to go to Indiana.)
Our server was fairly attentive and rattled off the extensive beer list in about 8 seconds flat without taking a breath. I don't drink, but that was really impressive.
Thirty minutes later, we had the stuffed pepperoni pizza we had ordered. This was really quick compared to other Giordano's restaurants. Maybe it was the fact that the place wasn't packed, maybe this location just rocks, or maybe it was luck, but I was pleased and impressed. The pizza was everything I expected and more (more, only b/c I happened to be so starving I probably could have gnawed off my left hand and enjoyed it). Our server was attentive but not overly annoying, which I can completely appreciate.
So, alas I'm torn: 3.5 or 4 stars for this location; 4 for Giordano's in general. Clearly I love Chicago pizza.
It's an adventurous day when I eat deep dish, or pizza from anywhere that's known for deep dish. It's no secret that I'm a devout NY styler, so I'm not unbiased.
That said, I wasn't displeased when I was forced by my company to eat Giordano's when they ordered it for lunch (Okay, not forced, but the aromas the pizzas were emitting were very tempting). So I caved, picked up a slice of the veggie thin crust and ate the whole slice. Yep, that's right. Little miss New Yorker ate Chicago's version of thin crust. And I enjoyed it. Was it the best thin crust ever? Most certainly not. But it's good when you're starving, it's on the company dime and your pathetic lunch of a banana and a granola bar is laughing in your face.
Fresh ingredients, really good cheese, passable crust gets you three stars, Girodano's.
Reliable, decent deep dish. I've definitely had better in this town though. The service was quick and attentive, the decor a little too kitschy, and it was packed to the brim with children.
My family and I ordered the spinach and artichoke dip (good! and came with crackers), a salad (alright), and a "special" stuffed pizza (bell peppers, onions, and sausage). The pizza was good we ordered the 1-2 person pizza which definetly can feed 3 people (if you want to save money... order the 1-2 person pizza). I felt this place was kind of generic, then again it is a chain.
When I came to Chicago I obviously had to try authentic, Chicago style deep-dish pizza. I was staying at HI Chicago and asked one of the staff members for a good pizza joint. She recommended this place and I am glad she did.
The pizza was AMAZING! I ate at the bar while watching the Cubbies play the Pirates on T.V with some die hard Cub fans. It was a great Chicago experience and I got two times the amount of pizza for what I would have received for that price in the Bay Area. I love the Bay, but in terms of Pizza Chicago is the place to be.
Visited Chicago for the first time, and of course I had to try the famous deep dish pizza. The Special was stuffed stuffed stuff and so was I. Thought it was a bit tourist-y to be eating deep dish pizza, but I'm glad that I did.
However, being the Lollapalooza weekend and might of been crazy busy, we waited over an hour for our pizza to come out. Seating wasn't that bad (maybe 15 min wait) but the rotation was so slow, the party next to us gave up and canceled their order.
Yep...this Pizza is everything you read about it-Best Chosen Pizza by Chicago Tribune, NY Times, NBC TV, Chicago Magazine! I got the standard Deep Dish with pepperoni! Yummmmmmm.....I can't wait to go back.
The spinach stuffed pizza really hit the spot after a stroll around the Sear's Tower/Opera House area. But get an appetizer, as the wait is quite long. It took 40 minutes for them to cook ours. We did, however, get a table for two right away.
The pizza was really, really good.
So the Pizza War continues... Chicago style wins my vote hands down, and Giordano's is the place I go to get it. The service is great, prices are fair, and the pie is proof that God loves me. Seriously, whether you're a connoisseur, or just want the ultimate Chicago pizza experience, Giordano's should be on the short list. So the next time you're in Chicago, cast your vote, and keep the battle raging.
