If it ain't broke, don't fix it, eh?  3 years later and still the same, amazing ingredients combined to make a killer sandwich.  Staff is still awesome, and the beers are still cold, what more do you need?

This time I ordered the hot capicola, and a short memory lapse proved a very important point; every sandwich is better with a fried egg on it!  And since I forgot, I convinced my buddy to switch me half of his.  Bottom line, spend the extra $0.50 and get the that egg on there, it makes a world of difference!  Still, the sandwich was piled high with fresh-cut fries and vinegar slaw.  Had we not planned our own version of Bizarre Foods immediately around the corner in Chinatown, I would have had two or three more sandwiches to make up for all the months I'm not here eating delicious all-in-one meals.

And if I may offer a piece of advice: don't ever change!!  It's comforting to know I can return as often as possible and get the same quality as the first time I stepped foot in your shop.

I love this place. It's about two blocks from where I live and the combo sandwich is perfect, especially because of the focaccia bread. I've also had salads here for dinner and sitting at the bar is great.

One star down though because they serve their wine in rocks glasses :/ I've also been given trouble here before for my ID. I know I look young, but I am definitely of drinking age.

Overall though, a staple in my North Beach routine.

The sandwiches are simple: plain white bread, vinegar coleslaw, provolone, hand cut fries, your choice of meat. I usually get the smoked turkey, which is not too dry, and add a fried egg.

Giordano sandwiches are not as decadent as you'd expect a sandwich with fries in it to taste, and I mean that in a good way.

The place is packed with black + yellow whenever a Steelers game is on.

The north beach location fits a lot of seating into a small space. There's also two tables out front for patio seating.

The atmosphere is very FUN, sports (specifically Pittsburgh-oriented) spirit, with beer, and big portions.

Yes, there are fries IN the sandwich. And yes it is DELICIOUS. Supposedly the sandwiches could use more meat (according to my brother), but I thought the balance of meat, slaw, and fries was just perfect. With several drops of hot sauce with each bite, there's not much left to complain about.

Oh also, they have Guinness on tap.

The pastrami sandwich is amazing, onion rings are off the chain.  The beer was stale.  No point in having micro brews if you don't keep them fresh.  Next time, Ill order a bottled beer, same sandwich, and spend some time watching a Penguins game on their many tv's and give them the fifth star back.

Review of their all-in-one sandwiches only: 4.5 stars.

I came on a non-game day to avoid the crowds and had a very tasty coppa sandwich.  The Italian bread was very soft and clearly very fresh.  The coppa was very good, generously peppered on the outside.  The fries were crisp on the outside, moist on the inside.  The slaw was very vinegary, which complemented the other flavors excellently.  Overall, I was very impressed with how well the flavors worked together.  From a birds-eye view, the sandwich was ~6" long and 3 1/2" wide.  Not huge, but not small either.  At $6.75-$7.25, the prices are fair.  I'd definitely return if I am ever in North Beach, and I look forward to trying the newer Mission location as well!

Giordano's does black and yellow proud.

Their signature all-in-one sandwich might just sound like a big 'man' sandwich that's huge and doesn't really taste all that good, but trust me, it's far from that. If I wanted to go all foodie on you, I'd say the crunchy, vinegary slaw perfectly complements the greasy, warm fries and peppery coppa, and that all of this is sandwiched between fresh white Italian bread...but at the end of the day, its just a damn good sandwich. Get it! The coppa is 7.25 but most other sandwiches are around 6.75, and they are very filling.

We didn't come on a game night, but I can definitely see how this would be a great place to watch a Steeler's game - very divey and lots of Pitt paraphernalia everywhere. Love it!

The sandwiches here are delicious. They are pretty hard to describe, but I will try.

Take two slabs of bread. Put awesome meat on it. Put coleslaw on it, but the coleslaw is actually good (I typically hate coleslaw). Then put a few french fries on there. Then (optionally) add a fried egg. Then dump some secret salad dressing on there so that it soaks through the bread so the bottom is soggy.

If that sounds disgusting, then.. well.. you'll just have to trust me. It's freaking awesome.

Add some good beer to the mix, and you've got a good spot for lunch.

I had an art gallery opening to attend in the city...but it was not stopping me from getting my fix. As a native Pittsburgher...I was excited to try their version of the sandwich. Although we were out of places in heels and cocktail dresses we found the last 2 bar stools and proceeded to have great service and amazing food....

I had a beer and a sammy ( hot Coppa) Loved it. My partner in crime was not impressed with the wine selection, but loved her sandwich as well.
probably why I proceeded to the Mission location recently as well.

Definately a slice of home when YINZ need it!!!

As a native Pittsburgh gal, I couldn't be happier to have this place in the neighborhood. It is the absolute best place to be during any Steelers/Penguins/superior sports team game and has a great hometown feel. The staff is extremely fun and light hearted, and not unusual to see in full Steelers uniform on game day.

Giordano Bro's pays tribute to Primanti Brothers, a classic Pittsburgh bar (now many locations, but the original is in the Strip District) that is known for their signature sandwich, made up off: meat, cole slaw, fries, and a fried egg. The story is that they originally did this because busy truck blue collar workers needed to eat quickly and asked for everything to be stacked together.

I HAVE to be loyal and admit that Giordano Brothers can NEVER compete with Primantis (Note: if any management is reading this, the difference is in the BREAD,) BUT... it is a great West Coast substitute and a damn admirable effort.

My only advice would be that if you are coming to watch a game, COME EARLY, because the bar fills up quickly and overflows out the door. Seriously, if it is 5pm game be prepared to come as early as 1 or 2 to get a prime table.

This is definitely a Steelers bar! We came to watch Sunday Night football, and the place was PACKED!!!! So packed that we were spilling into the streets with our beers (SHHH... don't tell the cops!)

Aside from Sundays, if you're here for food, you're coming to the right place. Their sandwiches are made on really thick slices of bread- which is surprisingly soft without getting soggy. They stack the meat up really high, and stuff the french fries and the coleslaw in there too. Do yourself a favor and order and extra side of fries--- and their onion rings are pretty tasty too! You can't go wrong with any of the meats. All of sandwiches are made with high quality meat. The beer selection is small, but straight and to the point. They serve good beer here- none of that piss water here!

Great place to catch a game, grab a beer, and get full from great food. And the service is always great- even if you're not here to watch sports.

    oh. ADD AN EGG.

I've been wanting to try this place for the longest time and it was worth the wait!! I didn't have much of an expectation coming into it knowing that a lot of places I hear about are a tad overrated.

BUT! Giordano Bros... oh em gee! I'm usually in North Beach when I'm in the city so I don't know how I DON'T know about this place!!

The pastrami is good. What makes this sandwich awesome is probably due to the SOFT, chewy bread and the salt and pepper/lime coleslaw AND the french fries they put IN the sandwich. It gives the entire sandwich that extra OOMPH with all the different textures and flavors. It works. "Don't try and change it" as it says on the blackboard. And I would never!

The best one was probably the Cappiocola, a spicy Italian ham. Oh my.... I want one right now!

Giordano Bros also has tv at this location and beer on tap from $4-$7 per pint. Not too shabby. The service was hit or miss, but for a crowded place on a Saturday at 1PM and 2 servers and 1 cook, it's A-ok. I'm here for the food anyways.

I was meeting with my buddy for dinner and wanted to try something new.  He mentioned a great place in North Beach called Giordano Bros with some popular sandwiches so we made the long walk up from the BART station to give it a try.

I ordered the Italian sausage sandwich ($6.95) and Amstel ($3) for dinner.  The sandwich was stuffed with fries and coleslaw which really brought it all together.  It was really delicious but I couldn't help but want more fries and sides to round out the meal.  If you took those things out of the sandwich, I think it might just be bread and meat.  Regardless, the combination is undeniably tasty and I'd come back for another one.

The service was really friendly and welcoming.  Giordano Bros is essentially a dive bar with food and there's a homely feel to the place.  The happy hour specials get as low as $2 per beer, which is pretty much unbeatable in the city.  Stop by when there's a big game and throw back a beer as you cheer your team on!

Take an Italian sandwich and add in french fries and cole slaw and it makes an awesome $7 sandwich. Yum.

We tried the pastrami and the cappiocola (spicy Italian ham).

The pastrami wasn't bad, but the spicy ham was amazing. It comes with ample meat, provolone, fries and tons of vinegar dipped cole slaw.

Try them yourself. Throw on an egg for $0.50 more too.

The service was 50/50, by that I mean one guy, the bigger one wearing the hat, was great and real friendly and another guy, the emo looking one, was EXTREMELY RUDE and ignored me TWICE when I asked if I could order. He needs a lesson in how to world in a restaurant.

At least the food was worth it.

I had the vegetarian chili and a side order of fries when I came here with a large group of coworkers. I know, I know, I didn't get a sandwich, but if their whole selling point is that they put fries in the sandwich, the fries ought to be good, right? They were so bland.

The veggie chili was actually bad (it felt like they had added sugar to it, and it was too sweet) So I personally can't give more than 2 stars. My coworkers all seemed to enjoy their sandwiches but a few of them were still hungry about an hour after... so maybe not as filling as you'd think.

My boyfriend and I were in the mood for sandwiches. Initially, we were trying to look for Molinari's and ended up passing the store from walking too far. We decided to try Giordano's since we have walked past the establishment many times. Also, it is a sports themed restaurant, of course my boyfriend wanted to come here instead.

It took us awhile to decide on what to get. You go up to the counter to order and seat yourself. I was recommended the La coppa with an egg. Of course, it came with the coleslaw and french fries inside of the sandwich The meat is similar to proscuitto, so it has that salami/ salty taste. Surprisingly, its not as heavy as it sounds. From my first visit, I like to use that spicy sauce they have on each table, splash it onto my sandwich before each bite I take. YUMMs!  My boyfriend ordered the steak sandwich and it just reminded me of a hamburger. He liked it, but I liked mines better!

The price is average. Our order came up to be about 16 dollars for 2 sandwiches and a small soda.

Actually, we are planning to go again tonight because I have been craving for it since Ive first tried it!

What happens when you put top-quality meats, the best fries ever (hand cut in house), and crisp, delicious slaw between two thick slices of Italian bread?  Sandwich perfection, that's what.   The all-in-one is the best thing to happen to the sandwich since bread.

As if this isn't amazing enough, they have fantastic beers on tap (fave pairing of mine is the coppa and a Stella) and the price can't be beat.  Don't bother getting a sandwich anywhere else (it may be more expensive, and it definitely won't be this good).  Service is friendly, fast, and a casual, fun atmo.   Great place to meet friends, watch a game, and have a few pints.

How can you beat that?  I was told that the Hot Copicola is the best - legit reason to come back for further research. Strictly Beer, no other liquor offered!

Let it be said that this really could be an amazing restaurant / bar with great food. Unfortunately, my first experience with the establishment was with an unruly waiter who was so upset with the Denver Broncos victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers that he actually threatened to physically assault my girlfriend and I for celebrating for the other team.  I wasn't able to speak with the manager who may or may not have been on that evening but a much more professional employee did try and smooth things over. That being said I obviously intend on filing a report and would have a difficult time giving these guys the benefit of the doubt to go back or recommend anyone else to but you never know.

Man vs Food showed us Primanti Bros. SF offers us Giordano Bros. Negative reviews of this place generally stem off of two types of people, people who don't want fries in their sandwich, and vegetarians. If you are either one of those, why would you come here to begin with?

Upon your first steps in, you enter a different city, different time, different way of life. The working class blue collar people of Pittsburgh would feel at home here. Live music often, small, grub and get the **** out tables and chairs tell you that in here, you're in the Steel City. What's not to like about a place that wants to feed you an all in one sandwich and get you going on your day?

As for the grub, wings were killer. Crispy, meaty, and dripping with what might be the most unique, mouthwatering, taste bud tantalizing sauce you'll ever try. I was torn between the Cappiocola and the Pastrami, and ended up choosing my personal Old Faithful, pastrami. Throw and egg on it, I'm told. The white bread was chewy, fluffy, and ultimately finished the job of keeping the innards of this jumbo sandwich together, until my final bite. Coleslaw was a fantastic change in texture, adding crunch, and a touch of sourness from the vinegar. And of course the fries, again who wouldn't want these in a sandwich?! The only way it could have been better  is if these were fried JUST a little longer, and salted more, I mean come on, if you're eating fries, salt those bad boys up.

Would I return? Of course, might ask for that one change on the fries, but yes. Besides, still gotta try that Cappiocola.

I'm clearly biased because I'm a Steelers fan from PA.

I went for the first time this past weekend to watch the Steelers/Patriots game, and the place had (a) an electric atmosphere, (b) tasty, Primanti-esque sandwiches, and (c) pretty much the best waiter I've ever seen at a bar.

The downsides are that it's all the way in SF (why are there no Steelers bars in the East Bay?) and that I lost my voice from shouting so much during the game.

I'm excited to go back for other big games.

Alright... so it's been a few years since the garlic fry incident and I was lured back through the doors at Giordano Brothers...

It was a Wednesday night and it wasn't super busy, so we snagged a table against the wall. A beer and a coppa sat in front of me as I re-evaluated my previous thoughts on the joint. No owner in sight, just cool, laid back Giordano folk and the smell of freshly baked cookies. So, I pick up my coppa sandwich and as I'm about to take a bite, I'm told "No! Hot sauce is a must!" A quick douse of the red stuff handles that problem and away we go!

The sandwich is not as bad as I remember it (amazing how a single personality can change your perception of a sandwich). In fact, it's actually really really good... I have to say, a little of my pride went down along with this sandwich.

Giordano Bros take#2 was a success! I'll be back. Just not for any football games ;)

Pittsburgh style sandwich. french bread, coleslaw, and french fries in every sandwich. Don't even think about trying to get it any other way. you might as well go to another sandwich place if you're going to do that.

i get the pastrami sandwich when i'm here. my sister likes the hot coppicola. what can you say, good sandwich.

it can get crowded, but that's the fun of the place. I don't go on game days though, that would just be chaos.

if you're ever in North beach/chinatown area, and don't want your typical italian cuisine/chinese food, then head over here for a good sandwich and a good time.

the wait staff are all very personable, helpful, and attentive. (the asian guy isn't bad looking either) but we'll just leave that between you and me.

In my estimation I am not a DUDE nor do I believe that
    GIORDANO'S  "A L L   I N   O N E"  Sandwich is a Gastronomic Dream.
It is a BELLY IRRITANT...............  Fried  C H E A P O   Pastrami is a Crime against PASTRAMI...  Girodano's Meat Buyer should be quartered and hung and aged like a whole side of beef.  The pastrami it too dry and lean to fry into nothingness, the flavor was non-existent.

Piling all the stuff on cheap, imitation sweet "French" bread is a travesty against your belly, whether or not you are trying to get un~hungover.

They slather your bread naught, it has a schmear of something and then comes the pastrami followed by a slice of "Provolone" that you can see through, it is soooooooooo thin.  Next, I got the palest, limpest colorless fries imaginable.  I was noticed pulling the fries off as they were GAWD AWFUL.  The waitress noticed it and said they'd make another.  The "Another" was jammed full of vinegar soaked cabbage, it was the thickest layer of all, making it    A CABBAGE SANDWICH
    as it sure wasn't coleslaw.

I thought the place was new as I read about online, "Tasting Table, or something.  What a let down to waste my money in this place.  The draught beer was quite good.

    Just because something is C H E A P doesn't make it GOOD.

The place is filled with TESTOSTERONE and wanabee Male Hookups.
    HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Plus it is divey meaning it is NOT CLEAN and stools are ripped.

Obviously, I am not a Dive Bar Type.

    The Female Bartender was
    VERY NICE, PRETTY & ACCOMMODATING

i tried this sandwich once just to see what it was about. the veggie one was basically just slaw and french fries.
the french fries got soggy fast because the slaw was so wet.

i remember laughing when it was served to me because it looked so outrageous. pretty difficult to eat too.

overall, it was pretty tasty in a junk food sort of way.

comfortable cushioned seating, so i can see how it would be good for watching the game. i don't care at all for sports though.

This place is the bomb. They're sandwhiches are delicious and distinct, with french fries and cole slaw stuffed in with delicious meats and cheese. The beer selection is good for a sandwhich shop....
ALSO, went here this Sunday night and saw the Midnight Farmers, a local bluegrass/rock band that spun heads and rocked the house with a number of Grateful Dead covers. I think they have live music many nights throughout the week.

Seems like a fun place to watch a game as well if you like Pittsburgh teams (which I don't) or if you like heckling Pittsburgh fans (which I do).

    Definitely recommend this spot

Yum! This place is sooooo delish! Sandwich with all the works of french fries and yummy coleslaw??!! THEY ARE AMAZING! So when we first got there, the tables were all full since everyone there was watching college football. But the server was so attentive and nice and brought my group drinks while we waited a couple of minutes for a table to clear.
We ordered 3 sandwiches- coppa, pastrami, and steak and eggs. The coppa is amazing; it's like a mix of salami and prosciutto. I didn't try the pastrami, but the steak and eggs was really good because it tasted so beefy. We also ordered a side of large onion rings which came with ranch dressing and were really fresh.
Overall, it was an amazing dinner. One sandwich can really fill you up since the addition of fries and coleslaw in the soft French loaf really hits the spot. I'm definitely planning on ordering my own steak and eggs sandwich next time :)!

-Very good sandwiches, but didn't really care for the bread (white bread only?) I'd go again, because the Onion Rings kicked A$$!!!
    -Beer selection was serviceable
BUT....sit at the bar, watch a game, and just ENJOY the conversation with the dudes behind the bar. Seemed like genuinely friendly folks, and the fact this chain is originally from Pittsburgh, PA? Well, the guy I talked to was a Right-Coast transplant, and he really lacked that "too cool for school affectation" many bar keeps-servers suffer from who grew up in the city:-p
       I'll go back, thank you.

$2 beers at happy hour is a beautiful thing!
We had beers, wines and an order of fries. So I can't comment on the sandwiches... maybe next time.
The dudes running this joint were super friendly and cool, despite the fact that they were in their annoying Steelers garb.
The atmosphere was fun and lively and the Pittsburgh propaganda wasn't over-the-top, in-your-face, so it was completely tolerable.
Fun place to hang out... especially during Happy Hour.

Went here a couple of weeks ago for a friends birthday.

There was a big group of us around 10:30 Friday night and we didn't have any problem getting a table.  It was a bit crowded, but in a cozy way.  The food was fantastic.  I got the copa sandwich and it was very good, especially if you like prosciutto (which I don't but I still ate the whole thing and wished I had more!).

They have live music Friday and Saturday nights.  When we were there the band playing was "The Fish Jugglers" (muppet reference?).  They were great background music and their song "Use your turn signal" was particularly amusing.  I looked for it online but couldn't find them.

The staff was very friendly and understanding of their more inebriated customers.  I would definitely recommend this place if you're in North Beach!

There are several reasons why I rate these guys so highly.
Cus service is great - (you'll see a trend in my reviews about this). I've been to this place many times and am always treated with class. Kevin at the bar is a very cool dude.
Food is great - The Pittsburgh style sandwich is great. Don't listen to the morons who don't like the slaw and fries in the sandwich and rate them poorly because of it. That's what they do. Don't go to a Suschi restaurant and rate them poorly because the fish is not cooked. So many Idiots...I swear.
Music is great - you'll be shocked at how good some of the young musicians who play there are.
Alcohol - they only have beer and wine. This sucks but I am going to forgive them because of their website. Check it out - they actually have a page that recommends other places in town. Again, very cool people

    We went with some friends after our 6pm class and bought some beers.  We had a nice time there and personally speaking, didn't spend as much as I did in some other similar bars before;
Excellent location, good and friendly service.  The environment is also enjoyable: flat screen TV, clean restrooms and nice decoration.  After 10 beers on tap we ordered onion rings and we found them amazing.  We ended up staying there for like 3 hours. Definitely will come back again any time soon.

I've brought countless buddies here for to get down, and everyone has loved it.  I feel like this place is one of the best sports bars in the city (yeah I know, really tough to get that distinction) in terms of food/tv/beers.  John is the man too, never forgets a name or an order and he CRUSHES it.

I get that this place is trying to emulate the "Primanti Bros." sandwich (or as some folks just call it, the Pittsburgh Sandwich).  Personally I've never been to Pittsburgh or had a Primanti Bros. sandwich but I'm going to assume this place was serves a pretty good approximation, which is what I was after having seen the Primanti Bros. featured on several food network shows.

So like others I enjoyed the sandwich but thought the bread was seriously lacking.  I had the hot capicola which was quite good, as were the fries.  The coleslaw is outstanding, it's not the drenched in mayo type, it's vinegar based and you get a huge portion.  Seriously though, the bread was soft, sweet, fluffy, and very much like cheap wonder bread or something.  I don't think it complemented the sandwich at all.

The beer selection is decent for a little bar/sandwich joint, and my buddy and I split the onion rings, which were also good.

This place would have gotten a solid 4 stars if the bread was decent, but as it stands, it's just average.

I'm not a big fan of sandwiches and such but I had a pretty good experience at Giordano Bros.

Why?  Because of the scrumptious food and the excellent service.

Came here with a large group of friends after a wedding and well, it was the perfect afternoon lunch.  The boyfriend and I shared the Coppa and it was just the right amount for the both of us.  The sandwiches are kinda big so it was perfect.  The Coppa consisted of prosciutto, a large amount of coleslaw and fries inside the sandwich.  Not sure if I'm leaving anything out but that's pretty much the gist of it.

    Oh.My.YUM.

You really can't go wrong with ordering any of their sandwiches, ALL are amazing, delicious, tasty, phenomenal. Did I mention scrumptious?!

Where else in Bay area can you get Pittsburgh style sandwiches crammed with delicious meats (they have egg for vegetarians - my friend had it and loved it!), yummy coleslaw, cheese, and french fries!

Appropriate prices, super friendly staff, quick service, amazing happy hour ($2 beers! woah!) and they have a bunch of tv's showing different sports channels. I came here years ago before I lived in the Bay area, and now that I do, I am back to enjoy more of their sandwich goodness. Speaking of which, you should too!
