Review Highlights
I am fairly neutral on this place; it's not really that important that the restaurant have a great view. Ginza is in downtown Tiburon basically, so you're going to get all the Tiburon people here.
The items on the menu sound amazing, but the ingredients weren't particularly compelling either way.
A turnoff was the eurodance music during dinnertime.... Interesting choice to play Captain Hollywood!
I LOVE Ginza!! We have had such a great experience every time we've been there...the sushi is so fresh and yummy, there's a beautiful view of SF, outside seating, never too crowded and you can literally eat off the floor- it's that clean! Yum, yum, yum!
My friends and I are sushiholics. We are obsessed and do a bi-monthly sushi night at a new restaurant each time. Well, we can't wait to go back to Ginza. We found ourselves at another place in SF last week saying "oh my god we should have just gone to TIburon!"
I have been dreaming of their 49er roll, and I am a sushi purist sashimi and nigiri is what I tend to stick to.
The rice was fantastic, the service was great. Our waiter was attentive, and patient. Great view if you sit by the window, the bathrooma re really nice..and yes they have a TV!
It was quiet for a Friday night, only two other couples aside from our table. Definatley try this place, great for a group of friends, perfect date spot right next to the theater and Sams bar.
Maybe it was staring at my beautiful wife, or the great harbor view, or just some amazingly creative sushi, but this place was magic. Be sure to stay at Inn above the Tide and bring bikes.
Yes, it was that good!
We went here last night after a movie across the street, and I was very impressed. It didn't seem like they were getting much business, so I was worried that there was something wrong with the place, but I was pleasantly surprised.
We ordered three things, Walu nigiri, Albacore Sashimi and Vegetable Udon. Everything was way above average, very clean and fresh, and the Walu was probably the best that I have had anywhere around the bay. The staff was incredibly kind, the space is damn clean and sleek, and the bathrooms are beautiful. It's this kind of place that makes me itch to travel to Japan.
I hope that more people frequent this place so that it can stay, because honestly, besides Sushi-Ran which breaks the bank, there is a dearth of decent sushi in Marin county. And yes, I just said dearth. This is good shit!!
I went here on Valentine's Day with my husband after being unsuccessful at finding a restaurant nearby I remember going to years before.
I was impressed right away by some of the more unique items on the menu, the great service and the quality of the ingredients. We had a wonderful special roll where daikon was used as the wrapper instead of the traditional seaweed which is an innovation I appreciated. The poke was also quite large and greatly spiced. I have to say, I don't make it to Marin to eat often but this place is a treasure I would recommend for a nice evening out or just a delicious quality meal.
What a sweet little Sushi resturant in Tiburon! I think it is probably the best Sushi place in Marin county. The waiters are very friendly. The service is timely so you don't feel like you are waiting.
The quality definitely meets the price...which isn't cheap.
Im writing a review coz the owner asked me as I was exiting - How do we compare to sushi in San Francisco. ?
You do good Id say - The fish could have been a bit fresher but your spicy tuna and hamachi compares with the best of them. You have a wonderful view of the Bay which not very many restaurants in the city can talk about.... and the hungry bikers that tend to visit just want something to eat that tastes good with a relaxing ambience. All that is there... we dont regret the decision to visit - relaxing , not too overstuffing and very relaxing place.
I did not like the desserts at all though. They seemed like commercial desserts from Safeway just frozen and served..... Def not a dessert placve.. you have to visit the Sweden Cafe nearby for that. !!
Sushi Tiburon, Ca
Located Downtown Tiburon , which reminds me of a coastal New England town like Nantucket with Less parking but more Porsche's and Mini Coopers.
GS has a great ambiance of pine wood floors and walls with an open kitchen and Sushi Bar.
I was there for lunch and enjoyed a very delicious Maki and Sushi combo as I looked out over their deck to a very exclusive Yacht Club, San Francisco Bay and The Golden Gate Bridge.
The value was excellent and they carried my favorite Nigiri Sake. The biggest standout in this 4 plus star Sushi bar was the most delicious homemade Miso Soup. Miso Soup is often way too salty at other Japanese restaurants but here it was made to perfection. I would stop in just for that next time I am in town, maybe they could freeze some and send it to me?
Update: Yan M. (http://mfyfy.yelp.com/) informed me that they are no longer doing Omakase course and that Chef Don is gone. Oh well, I knew that their deal was too good to be sustainable. It's still a nice place to go, but I now have to drop a star for them deciding to drop the incredible $30 Omakase.
---My original review---
I still cannot believe how good their $30 eight-course Omakase meal was! Such a great deal that I felt like I was robbing the place. I was ready to ask my dining friend to prepare the get-away-canoe at the back of the restaurant, because there was no way they would let me walk away with $30 + tip & taxes for the amount of food I got.
Review for Casual Japanese food fans:
I would highly recommend a visit to Ginza Sushi. Often times, newcomers to sushi eat at cheap sushi bars, then complain that sushi is fishy, and never eat it again. Fish at Ginza is fresh and not fishy at all. They also offer plenty of modern sushi creations, which is great for people who are not great with fishy fish.
Review for Authentic Japanese food fans:
Most of the fusion twists that the chefs at Ginza Sushi incorporated were things that Japanese people could accept and enjoy. In some restaurants, the slight twist destroys the food, but this place has one Japanese lady, who probably police the food to ensure that the train doesn't leave the tracks. If you are a sushi expert, you might want to stick with non-nigiri stuff, since I know you will complain to me about their rice. Hey, give them a break!
Sushi Ran (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) vs. Ginza Sushi:
While both of these sushi establishments are in Marin County, comparing the two would be senseless. Sushi Ran is almost 'fine dining', offering true Tokyo Style sushi with a variety of fish that most Americans have never tried. With that come some drawbacks, like high price-point and the difficulty of getting seats, especially on weekends. Ginza Sushi is more of a modern style sushi restaurant with reasonable prices where I could stop in for a casual dinner.
TIP:
Take a shot at asking for their $30 Omakase course (not on the menu). I say try, because the Omakase I got was too good of a deal for it to be sustainable. To order Omakase, you NEED to talk directly with the sushi chef Don, because the waiter may know about it. Tell the sushi chef that a Japanese guy who takes lots of pictures told you that there was a $30 Omakase course.
Omakase course 1: White tuna w/special sauce
Omakase course 2: Agedashi tofu
Omakase course 3: Asari clam soup
Omakase course 4: Sashimi
Omakase course 5: Crispy roll
Omakase course 6: Tenpura
Omakase course 7: Nigiri (Unagi and ika)
Omakase course 8: Mochi ice cream
PRICES: Even if you don't do Omakase, prices are reasonable.
IF you were able to do Omakase:
$30 Omakase course
$8 Small house sake (Ozeki)
$10 Tip and taxes
-----------------------------
$48 per person for dinner
IF you order from their menu, a sample dinner would be:
$7 Agetofu
$12 Froggy Platoon Roll
$7 Two pieces of Amaebi nigiri (raw shrimp with fried shrimp head)
$6 Two pieces of Hotategai nigiri
$8 Small house sake (Ozeki)
$10 Tip and taxes
-----------------------------
$50 per person for dinner
Bookmarked this location after reading Toro E's stellar review on the $30 Omakase!
We were surprised to find this location set in the middle of Main St in Tiburon. We often went to the neighboring Sweden House for brunch but never noticed this restaurant. Sure enough, they only opened 4 mths ago and we haven't gone to Tiburon lately.
When we got there, we quietly requested for the omakase meal but unfortunately, they don't offer that anymore and even sushi Chef Don was also no longer working there! :((( What happened? My heart sank since I was raving to my bf abt the omakase described by Toro!!
Are you kidding me? Then I realize that the kitchen staff and the wait staff all spoke Cantonese. Hmm....I was skeptical but since we got seated, we stayed and ordered the items from the menu.
We shared the agedofu which was definitely with a twist. The tofu was not submerged in the broth, instead it came in 8 pieces on a separate plate with the 3 sauces on the side and you kinda dip your tofu into each sauce for flavoring. Odd but ok, maybe it's fusion Japanese.
We also shared the sake/salmon sashimi which was a good cut, 3 different rolls:
Froggy Platoon - Fresh Salmon, Avocado, Snow Crab Meat, topped with sliced Cucumber and Salmon Roe
Salmon Skin Roll - Crispy Salmon Skin, Burdock and Lettuce (not so desirable, the roll was a lil on the dry side)
Caterpillar Roll - Broiled Freshwater Eel and Cucumber, topped with Avocado and Flying Fish Roe
And we added the Volcano Roll - Snow Crab Meat, Avocado, Flying Fish Egg, Scallion, Baked Salmon with Spicy Creamy Sauce which was my favorite! The roll was warm and the baked salmon on the outside of the roll was excellent!
We skipped dessert since we were stuffed from dinner. Great view, nice ambience, not overly crowded although the service was rather spotty towards the end. Lots of patrons came in asking for table but were turned away due to the restaurant being full house. We were lucky since we just walked in and was seated immediately.
Btw, check out the restroom, there is a flat screen TV with audio running different ads and a automatic trash can (well, u click the open and close button) to dump your trash!
I am still super bummed for not having tried the Omakase here! Sob sob!
Warning: Experienced Sushi Snob
BLECH!!! is all I can say about this place. We had the fatty tuna guts and that was about the only good thing we had. The cooks are NOT Japanese and it shows in the quality. Me thinks them are Chinese or Korean.
Fresh?? Really? Ok..if you say so.
This place was overpriced and the food was EH..so so and considering the costs...very BLECH!!
If you want to gauge how superior the sushi is you must try the basics: Tamago, Sake, Ika, Maguro. If anyone of these is bad then chances are everything else stinks. This goes especially for the Tamago (how can you expect to write a novel if you can't write you name?)
Anyhooo....this being said. I had the basics and they were far from phenomenal. barely mediocre.
One good piece of fish does not a great sushi house make.
Sushi snobs stay away.....all others feel free to burn your money at your will.
We love sushi and were thrilled to have a new sushi option in downtown Tiburon. We have eaten at Ginza four times now and, in spite of wanting to like it, have been sadly under-whelmed. I have had trouble putting my finger on what's missing here. The food is maybe somewhere between three and four stars -- not bad, not great. The prices are typical. I think, more than anything else, Ginza is missing any kind of sushi-restaurant ambiance. If it was a pizza restaurant, it would seem upscale. As a sushi restaurant, though, it has the feel of a place opened and run by someone who has little or no sushi restaurant experience. The wait staff feel more like part-timers than what we expect from a sushi restaurant, the chefs are adequate, the ambiance is generic. Blah. If you're in Tiburon and want sushi, it's probably fine. Just fine...
Ginza owners, if you are reading this, please go find a GM or head chef or whatever is appropriate for a sushi restaurant, and turn this into a great place! We really want to love you, but don't just yet.
Can we say "sushi to die for"? You say, why drive up all the way to Tiburon for sushi? Well, for Ginza Sushi of course!!
Sushi Rolls, Sashimi, Tatari and Raw Oysters...this place has it all. The best part is their excellent selection of cold sake with all the wonderful fish!
It's da bomb and a great place to take visitors when making the trip to Tiburon.
Great place for a date ;)
It is too bad this place isn't better. The location is wonderful, with beautiful views, a clean and modern room, and it is close to where we live. This is not a high-end restaurant, so don't go there expecting Sushi-ran, nobu, etc quality. The tataki (sashimi with ponzu sauce) style is a safe bet though the tobiko they use is low grade. The rice can be a big problem here, and we have had an experience where it was so mushy that the sushi and rolls were jsut awful. A previous time though, the rolls were flavorful and fun, and the rice was the right consistency. It really depends on the night, which is unfortunate. They have a number of interesting rolls and combinations. I am hopeful that they will improve over time. This could be such a great place.....
Waiter service is excellent, no complaints on that. The fish wasn't fresh, and rice could have been provided. Portions were small. I requested oudoor seating and was told that they don't have it. There was no miso soup provided either.
Ginza Sushi is a great addition to Southern Marin. The fish is fresh and yummy and the owners are super-nice. The decor is nice, overall it's a very pleasant place to eat. I should note that I went when they first opened and was turned off by the surly wait staff. It's been over a year since then and there's been a complete turn around. The prices are reasonable for sushi, especially for Tiburon, and it's definitely a step up from your run-of-the-mill sushi place. Their sake's good too.
no sushi snob could possibly give this place 5 stars. ginza is truly forgettable. having worked in tiburon we would drop in occasionally as an alternative to the few lunch time dining options we had... but every time this place was brought up someone always said "oh, i forgot that was even there."
good for a change of pace if you're stuck in tiburon. but as far as food quality. could definitely be better. the fish ain't all that and the other dishes vaguely resemble something from tokyo express. ginza, never aGINza!
Ate here last month for the first time and loved it. The fish was so fresh and delicious and the service great. This hs become a regular date spot. Definitely recommend Ginza over the other touristy options in Tibuorn.
I went in for lunch...the food was good and the service was quick and attentive. I had one of the combos...all good. Everything seemed fresh and clean. The view of San Francisco really makes it special. I would encourage going to Ginza for a romantic outing.
The menu is limited but good. The view is great. The bathrooms are very modern including a T.V. monitor. The sushi counter is interesting since half of it looks into the kitchen.
We strolled up a little late, around 9:15 on a Sunday night, but they were willing to have us come on in granted we ordered right away. Not only was the sushi tasty good and super fresh, the service was quick (although I suspect that they were ready to get us out). Great view of the bay and the city from the back deck.
Nice decor, average food, big price.
As nice as it is to have decent sushi right on the water in Tiburon, I'm still underwhelmed by this place. You can definitely get better sushi in Marin. I was quite disappointed by my hamachi sashimi. The service was laughably shoddy when I was there. Prices could be worse considering that you're in Tiburon, but they're not good enough to pull me back in any time soon. But if you're looking for good food on the water in Tiburon, this spot will probably prove sufficient. It's also a nice date spot.
At last - an INCREDIBLE sushi place on the water in Tiburon! Blessed with one of the best views in the city, Ginza Sushi adds in some of the freshest fish I've had in years. Because of the location and the quality of the meal, this is not a cheap meal, but it's absolutely worth it. The fish melts in your mouth, they have a great selection of beverages and sake, and the service is fantastic. Packed early on a Saturday night, this hopefully is going to stick around for awhile. I truly hope so, because it's some of the best sushi in the Bay Area - and I know, that's saying something!
