Review from Marcus W.
San Francisco, CA
I've been training with Gina for about 18 months now. She's really good at working with you to reach your goals. I'm a trail runner, which for me means improved core strength and flexibility. Gina was able to create a weekly workout that fits into my training schedule.
After 18 months I still don't know exactly what I'll be doing each week. Though we've agreed on my training goals, Gina's great at mixing things up. A combination of the TRX suspension trainer, Swiss balls, a weighted bar, kettle bells, various stability tools and boxing has kept me motivated and challenged.
Two things you'll have to deal with: First is the bathroom facilities (the rest of the building is comprised of artists' studios). The unisex bathroom is downstairs and frequently reeks of paint fumes from a business next door. It doesn't smell upstairs but it can be overpowering when you're in the bathroom. And it may be cleaned regularly, but I still don't want to touch anything.
Second is Gina's availability. When I had to give up one of my two regular weekly time slots, it was quickly snapped up. Gina has several regulars that keeps her schedule fairly full. If you're looking for a standing weekly appointment, you'll have to wait until a regular drops. Until then, she periodically has cancellations that she announces to her email list.
Another option is her weekly Thursday drop-in boxing classes. It isn't really comparable to her one-on-one personal training but it'll give you a chance to meet her. -

This is an update to my review. Gina Lovoi's new training facility is great! The location is good--close to BART now. And, as I noted in a previous review: She's a great trainer and fun person I highly recommend her for boxing and any other aspect of the fitness world. She's really good at reading a person's ability. And from there, she determines how far to push someone. Before you know it, you are achieving WAY more than you thought you could. It's an amazing feeling. Check her out. It's worth it.

Perhaps one of the best classes I've ever taken in my life, no joke. I've now got two friends who now make it a priority to make the boxing classes every week. I've started taking personal classes as well and Gina gets me sweating and smiling at the same time. The only reason not to write a glowing review is that I want to keep this all to myself, but that would be selfish.

I used to be a card carrying member of a local gym. Then I was a "once in a blue moon" member of said gym, though paying a monthly fee for that occasional work-out where I did the same old cardio, same old weights, and aggravated the same old injuries. I was bored, lazy and dragging my ass.
Enter Gina. I love that she has her own little studio.the anti-gym--light, airy, and chock full of interesting looking work-out equipment. I love that she truly listens to my goals, understands my exercise inertia, isn't all about abs of steel (and losing weight), and is amazingly knowledgeable, flexible and inventive when it comes to planning my weekly workout. I never ever get bored and, as much as I am avoidant when it comes to physical exertion, I make it to my session every week because I have it's such a good time, ( and she lets me bring my dog who loves it more than I do!) and she's always got something new up her sleeve.
Don't think she won't kick your ass cause she will, but she also lets you swear at her when your about to collapse into a pile of jello. And though she does lots of boxing classes and training, she's perfect for my needs which is much more "no fun-no gain" .
She also spends way more time with you than you pay for (which is a bargain to begin with). Basically she's cheaper than my therapist, and it's debatable which one is more valuable.
My crowded stinky gym memories are a thing of the past. In the homogenized world of gyms, a session with Gina is a breath of fresh air -

I met Gina Lovoi when she was working at the World Gym in Potrero Hill. I'm so happy to see that she's back in the fitness business and better than ever! Gina is a wonderful personal trainer and group fitness instructor. She has the rare gift of being able to work with and relate to all types of folks.
What really sets Gina above and beyond your average fitness professional is that she truly believes that fitness is achievable by everyone, regardless of age, ability, or body size. She really expresses that belief in her work. She knows her stuff, and tailors each client's workout to make it challenging and fun. Gina treats every one of her clients with the same level of respect, and doesn't dumb down the training or fitness routines, and/or try to put you on a diet. Gina is a breath of fresh air from the attitudes or pushy sales tactics of some of the trainers in the bigger gyms. If you hate going to the gym, I'd suggest giving Gina a try. I'd lay money that you won't regret it! -

I've tried running (boring), biking (got my bike stolen), swing dancing (fussy partners), tennis (now I have a $90 racket that never gets touched), kung fu (expensive), and Billy Blanks (I get distracted easily trying to exercise at home).
I keep trying to find different, fun ways to get in shape, but it's hard to find something that keeps me wanting to go back. I decided to give Gina Lovoi's boxing class a try yesterday, after someone suggested her on Yelp and reading her reviews. I can say I'll be going back next week.
Her boxing class was really fun, and she made it easy to learn (I've never put on boxing gloves until yesterday, so I had no idea what I was doing). I felt great after taking her class. On top of that, there's the convenience of it being on Potrero, and there's a bunch of street parking. Well, I used to drive a big car, and I still get paranoid about finding street parking.
Bottom line is Gina makes you feel great. Give her class a try. Her all-level boxing class is only ten bucks, too. -

I've been taking Gina's Thursday night boxing class now for over 9 months, but my schedule will now make it difficult for me to make it back to class for the foreseeable future. The class is awesome, so I'm pretty bummed.
I've been involved in boxing training for nearly 6 years, and I've trained with people in the city, in southern California, and on the east coast. I can tell you that Gina's class is quite the steal for $10. Unlike many fitness instructors who simply improvise a workout, Gina takes the time to create a workout that will challenge you both physically and mentally. By the time I'm done, I'm physically taxed and loving it.
No worries if you don't have experience boxing. Gina will break down all the technique needed to make you a better fighter and to prevent injury.
As an added bonus, Gina and the other students are all incredibly friendly. Boxing gyms are designed to appear intimidating--Gina's class provides all the benefits of a traditional boxing gym, without scaring you into submission.
I'm just hoping I can make it back to class soon!1 Previous Review: Show all »

I directed a number of episodes of Funky Fitness TV show.
Gina's stamina and energy levels were always incredible.
If you want someone that will help you to be motivated and get active, I've no doubt Gina would be an incredible person to have on your team.

I went back to Gina's today after a month of absence. I was immediately greeted by Gina and all the new folks (all of them are friendly of course) as soon as i entered the door.
I work at another boxing gym but I still go to Gina's because she's my favorite trainer. I've had four boxing trainers so far but no other trainer knows how to push me to my limit like Gina does. Her methods of training are unique, effective and different for every individual. Gina's very passionate about boxing and training clients to help them reach their goals and it shows in her excellent work ethic.
Her boxing class is only $10 and believe me, its WORTH IT. I learn new techniques and moves in Gina's hour and 15 minute long class than I've learn in three hours at any other boxing gym.2 Previous Reviews: Show all »

Review from Susan Y.
San Francisco, CA
I've had many personal trainers over the years. It's true that each trainer is different and offers different perspectives, but I've never met anyone like Gina. She is hands-down the best personal trainer I have ever had.
Last year I was unexpectedly diagnosed with a rare heart/lung disease and ended up having a double lung and heart transplant. Before then I was a healthy and active person. A part of my recovery process was to exercise my lungs, so after my in home physical therapy ended I looked online for a trainer who could work with my condition .
After scrolling through multiple trainers on Yelp, I found Gina. After reading her website and philosophy I thought I'd give her a try. Even though she'd never worked with a transplant patient, I couldn't have chosen better.
After our initial meeting she called my transplant unit at the hospital and spoke with the nurse and physical therapist that I worked with. She also did a ton of research on her own time about recovery after transplant and working with people who are immunosuppressed.
Gina made my simple goal to walk a 5k fun and engaging. She had a specific workout plan for each session and made sure I was comfortable. She has a way of knowing when to push on and encourage and when to take a break.
Besides being a great trainer she is truly a compassionate and caring person. When I had a relapse and ended up back in the hospital, she came to visit and even took me to the hospital a couple of times when I didn't have a ride. As long as I'm living in the bay area, I will always turn to Gina for personal training. -

Last Fall I realized I was starting to get moody, as usual the cold and dark put me in a funk. My classic coping mechanism of skipping town wasn't going to happen this year, so I decided it was time to start working out again (among other things) to keep myself reasonable. I started out with a trainer at my gym. That was fine, I didn't know what I was missing!
Gina was recommended to me by a friend, and initially paid for by a "special friend" so I gave her a try. Goodbye awkward moments of passing as a normal girl, hello being comfortable letting it all hang out, laughing and breaking a sweat painlessly. She never gives me a reason to cringe or roll my eyes the way gym bunnies so often do. The hour flies by and I float out of her studio happy and relaxed.
I appreciate her emphasis on health and fitness rather than the creepy weight loss obsession so prevalent at the gym.
She manages to push me to work hard while making me feel like I'm running the show somehow. Love it. -

Gina is the BEST trainer EVER!
I started going to Gina a year ago. I was training for the AIDS Life Cycle 8 and was having problems with my neck and shoulder. Every training ride that I went on was agony! A good friend of mine recommended that I start training with Gina. Seeing as how you really need your upper body to be in good heath for a 600 mile bicycle ride across the state, I decided to see if she could help!!
I have to you that she saved my life! If it wasn't for Gina I never would have been able to complete the ride. She strengthened my upper body and core to the point that doing a 600 mile bike ride felt like nothin'!
AND, my arms have NEVER looked so good! I mean, man oh man do they look good!
I have continued to work with Gina even though the ride ended in June. Her workouts are a major part of what keeps me sane these days!
Thanks Gina!
I love ya! -

I started working out with Gina about four weeks ago and it's been an amazing experience. I never thought I'd try boxing and now I'm addicted because she makes it so fun. My muscles are sore for, on average, three days after our sessions which makes me feel like I'm getting my money worth. Note I said "my muscles are sore"... not that my neck or back is sore which is what usually happens when I work out solo or with someone who isn't watching my form and correcting it. Also, I concur with what previous reviewer Aishe B said about the "anti-gym"... I hate gyms and the inherant lack of privacy therein so I really appreciate that Gina's workout space is in an artists studio building and is totally private when the session is going on.

Gina is an amazing instructor. I've taken her group boxing classes as well as private sessions (which are ass kickers) and I learn something new every time.
She knows her stuff and is extremely motivating. She gets genuinely excited when something 'clicks' for you, which, I think, is the mark of a truly natural teacher.
In a word, Gina ROCKS. -

I'm not too terribly into boxing. My boyfriend actually kind of had to force me to come along to Gina's Thursday class a couple of months ago... I was pleasantly surprised.
I'm kind of an awkward person: I'm painfully shy, embarrassed of my body and my lack of hand-eye coordination, uncomfortable around strangers and terribly out of shape. When I first met Gina, I was kind of embarrassed that I had so little knowledge of boxing and I didn't really want to be social about anything... I just wanted to keep my eyes lowered, punch, punch, punch, out the door. I must agree with the other reviews in that Gina can make anybody feel comfortable in their own skin. I know, I know, it's kind of corny, but, taking her class certainly boosted my confidence and made me feel connected to a group of... well, strangers.
I really loved how Gina always had a specific game plan for each lesson.. you could tell that she was really into it and took the time to plan everything out for us so we got a good workout and all. I must say, I learned quite a bit more than I had imagined I would in just one hour with Gina. She took the time to take me and my boyfriend aside and brush us up on some of the basic skills to make sure we were okay to mix in with the other two people there. She pretty much specialized a workout for the two of us on the spot which I thought was amazing to do, especially since she had to balance everything with the other pair of people there for the lesson. Gina is the most enthusiastic, encouraging, most fun person I have ever met (not kidding) and you can see her passion as soon as the round timer goes off. She glows when she hears that crisp "Whack!" against you partner's glove and she has some sort of psychic ability to read your mind. As soon as you start thinking, "My arms, my arms! They're gonna fall off!" something clicks in her mind and all of a sudden, you can hear her encouraging you from the other side of the room. Needless to say, my arms were burning up until the next Thursday's lesson after my first session with Gina.
I don't want to make this review too long as most of you might not even read it in its entirety... let's just say that $10 is definitely worth spending your time with Gina for a quality workout. Plenty of parking, decent price... there's really no excuse NOT to go see Gina one o' these days. -

Gina is tough and fun at the same time. Works perfectly for me because I hope I'm tough and fun too.
Although I'm a trainer myself and in fact work out of Gina's space, I have chosen Gina to train me to build strength for dance and keep me on my game.
Her workouts are intense and innovative. I always feel motivated and inspired when I leave our sessions. She puts a lot of time into each of her clients and personalizes your workouts and accounts for workout time not with her. Her passion for her work shows. And she's loads of fun! I'm always laughing through the most difficult things. Try balancing on the nubbies while pressing weight into the sky. Woah!
Gina is awesome and she inspires me. If you're looking to get away from the politics and drama and cost of the gym, then you're looking in the right place with Gina. -

Gina is a rare find! I have been training with Gina for over 9 months now and have to give her the highest endorsement possible for a trainer! I have done martial arts training since age 6, from Wushu to Tae Kwon Do to Shotokan and Jiu-Jitsu. Getting away from those classic, formalized forms going into boxing has been made easy by Gina's fun, flexible, motivational style. Her passion and dedication are expressed through her actions: she's thoroughly prepared for each class (private or group), amped and attentive and you will never hear a put down from her. Needless to say she knows boxing back and forth and has a training and fighting record to prove it. Her clients completely run the gamut- just stop by her Thursday evening class at 7pm at Live Art Studio and see for yourself!!!

I've been with Gina for almost a year. I can honestly say she is an awesome trainer and wonderful person. I have gone from a size 16 to a 12 now. I'm much happier and more confident than I've ever been. My cardio is definitely alot better and my strength has improved. I enjoy working out with Gina. She is one of a kind. Her Thursday classes are the best, too. We have rigorous workouts of boxing drills, various routines that kick our butts, but we just keep coming back 'cause it's a challenge and I like challenges. I recommend Gina for anyone at any fitness level.

I took Gina's fitness classes when she still worked at World Gym and I really miss them! As a plus-sized woman, it can be hard to find a class that is a good fit. Gina respects all her clients, really respects us. She finds ways to make it work for all of us. Besides that, she made it fun and easy to work out and sweat in front of a whole gym full of people who are fitness crazy! I only wish there were more trainers like her. She really makes it true that fitness is for EVERYBODY because of her professional knowledge and dedication to her clients. She is the real deal.

Gina is an amazing personal trainer! Ever since I discovered her Thursday night boxing class I have been hooked. I look forward to it all week long. It's also an incredible deal at just $10 a class. Not only is it a *great* work out, I always feel deliciously sore the next day, it is also so much fun. Gina is very attentive and really helpful with correcting form and making sure each person in the class gets individual attention. Everyone is super friendly and welcoming. I recently started personal training sessions and have been very impressed and satisfied with my sessions. Gina is great at individualizing the session to my specific training goals and very encouraging and motivating.
