Service is bad but the food is worth waiting for! This is the restaurant that introduced me to sushi. This is what I suggest if waiting is a problem for you: 1) avoid weekends since it's the hardest to find a table 2) once seated, keep reminding any waitress that you have been waiting for your order and 3) be a little pushy with what you want.
If you can do these 3 simple things then you'll do fine and Gin Sushi. if not, why don't you just come back during a weekday lunch time and sit at the bar. :) You have to try this food before you can mock it!
Plus...it's a good price!
Ah, Gin Sushi. First off let me say that the food is not bad, especially considering the price. We go often from the office as it is close and, usually, quick. Miso soup is fresh, cucumber salad is just right.
Anyone notice on the way there while driving on Colorado, more, eh, 'working people' on the street?
Don't let the outside fool you, they do serve food inside. At least they moved the large home speakers out of the corners and upgraded to the professional ones that are in the ceiling. But Britney Spears and 90's RnB like TLC as music for a sushi place? I asked one of the servers what type of music they had and she said that it is stuff everyone brought form home. Well, please bring some more modern music. I feel like am back in high school.
As a note, for those who have been there, Lily Tomlin still works at Gin.
(Go check it out)
While on this visit, the food was quick, but it took forever just to get the check. Dine and dash came to our minds. After asking 4 times for the check, we got it.
Should have asked Lily....
This used to be a buffet style Japanese restaurant called Edokko, it's been remodeled since so the place seems more spacious and brighter, but the dinner ware takes away from the authenticity when they use chinaware instead of stoneware or lacquered dishware.
Nigiri and handrolls were okay (we had mackeral, halibut, salmon, salmon skin). Rolls are humongous and swimming in so much sauce the rice falls apart (spicy tuna with crunch on top, lobster roll, and a deep fried California roll which we didn't order but they wouldn't take back). I would rather skip dinner than have to suffer their sushi again.
I want to take away another star for the communication problem that led to a mistake in our order which they were not willing to correct but I'm being generous with my review.
Sayuri nigori sake $10, best thing on the menu, I highly recommend it

Gin is a good place to go if you have people who don't all eat sushi. They have a pretty good Lobster roll (I think it's scalled BSCR or something like that) that my friends get because they can't eat raw stuff. It's like (from what I heard crawfish meat?) with mayo, some other sauce put on top of a california roll. It was YUMMY. i think you're better off coming here for cooked Sushi. Some of my friends had their combo plates with Chicken Teriyaki and they were pretty good too! They have Korean shortribs bbq which is good too. The prices are very reasonable. It is okay Sushi. I like it.
Amy is an awesome waitress and I'm not just saying that because she's my friend. =P
Over all, it's a good place to eat cooked Sushi that's a little further away from Old Town that you can actually find decent parking.
knowing how crowded this place gets on weekends...i still went to this place thinking "waiting 40 minutes will be worth it"
NOPE!!! i expected too MUCH.....first of all...i waited an hour..(well...i kinda expected that..) and when i got the table..i wanted two simple things...salmon sashimi and dinner combo..
yeah...i never got the dinner combo and i ended up sharing the plate w/ my buddy...and yeah....that means...we ended up sharing 6 pieces salmon......(we DID NOT order anymore..since we weren't willing to wait an hour for another order...)
I told myself that I wasn't going to review this place because it has a shitload of mixed reviews already..
BUT when I went on monday around 1:30pm when it was not crowded like it usually is, service was slow as fck. it pissed me off because people who sat later than me got their food first AND I had to ask the 3-4 different waitresses when my food was coming 3 times... the busboy was more attentive btw (he managed to flag down the waitresses for me and even after, they still didn't stop by my table). the fck is their deal?
Status: Not happy :( but im nice so you still get 4 stars

Gin is the funniest and the Mexican Roll is my favorite. Sit at the bar if you can and chat it up with the sushi chefs. Go on your birthday and they take a picture of you and you can put it up in the restaurant!
The quality of the fish is not that great (but definitely not that bad either), but you wouldn't expect it to be with their prices, decor, and service.
Gin Sushi is a good place for budget sushi and other Japanese treats. It tends to get crowded and if you see Gin himself behind the sushi bar you will be entertained for a few minutes.
My favorite thing is the B.S.C.R but I always request it on a Mexican roll instead of a California roll, just for some added spice. The late, great Bruce Tong invented it and it's delicious. The unagi on the Caterpillar roll is never warm enough and I tell myself I'm never going to order it again, but I still order it every time.
They will keep you hostage and never bring you the bill, so it's best to ask for more beer and the bill when they deliver your final dish.

I have come here for lunch only. If I worked closer I would be able to choose to frequent this place a lot more than the other Japanese places nearby. I would get the lunch combo and one of the items would always be salmon teriyaki. After having it at this place, I never get salmon teriyaki at anywhere else. The salmon is bigger and it tastes fresher. The sauce doesn't overwhelm the taste of the fish. The tempura has two shrimps as opposed to other places with just one shrimp, yes! I like this addition. Sesame chicken is something I can pass over, but in fairness, the other people in my group seem to enjoy it, even though it tasted like soggy chicken bytes. I still prefer the sesame chicken at Zono Sushi. The calamari tempura tasted like thinly battered calamari, nothing to exclaim over. The deep fried oysters was something else, between 7 people, we still couldn't (wouldn't) finish the one item serving of that. If it is an acquired taste, I don't want to acquire it. The tonkatsu tasted like shake and bake pork chops served with a very strong A-1 concoction. The yakitori was mediocre, cubes of meat on a skewer with green peppers in between. I never sat at the sushi bar so I don't know how the rolls are there, but I never liked the ones that came with the lunch combo, they just don't taste right. If I want a roll here, I might have to settle for California roll, haven't had those yet. The salad here actually tastes better than other places, I can't put my finger on the salad dressing, but it makes the difference. The miso soup is stronger, just the way I like it.
The picture of the menu is outdated, but the items are pretty much the same. One item lunch is $6.30, two items $7.30 and three item $9.30. They prefer not to give individual checks for parties that are 5 or more, so your group better have a designated money handler.
The place is not crowded at lunch time and always managed to get a table right away for our usually big group. For lunch combos, always include the salmon teriyaki and tea. The tea is $1.50, but is good and you get a pot with it. There is a metal strainer inside filled with tea leaves. This is a plus compared to other places that uses teabag (why teabags?)
The place has Polaroid pictures of people on their birthdays on the wall. So it might be a fun place to come back to see what else is on the menu beside the lunch specials. The previous reviews about the service is right, it's a hit or miss. A couple times they got an order wrong, but they were able to correct it in a short amount of time. Someone else mentioned that the busboys were more attentive, well I think that is true, we got one of the busboys to help us get water from the waitresses. It does take a while to get the check, they won't bring it to you unless you ask for it and I actually prefer that except it's not always easy to get the attention of the waitress which can extend your stay. They are very, very good at making sure your water is always filled up, that is always a plus to me. I'm starting to think that might actually be the best way to get the attention of the waitress, drink your water so you can get a refill.
It's a good place to go for lunch with salmon as one of the items to get.
The Good
--------------
Almost all the rolls that are baked are very deliciously made and flavorful.
The Bad
------------
Fish quality for the raw items is definitely mediocre as I usually eat raw.
Service is a hit or miss.
Wait times are way too long so best to go at odd hours.
Sushi presentation is very sloppy and fell apart easily. Well made sushi will not fall off the rice!
Parking is very small so you might end up parking on the side streets or even farther.
Overall
----------
If you're into baked warm rolls then most of the ones in their menu is great. Raw fish is not bad or good either so if you aren't too picky in that department then more power to you. Always expect a long wait here.
3.5 rating. the pricing for the portions are pretty generous, srvers are always pleasent to me. not memorable sushi, but a good place for a filling me and a locals spot
Gin sushi is just ok. Like the previous reviewers said the place is korean-owned so expect prices to be lower than the real deal. I had the albacore sashimi. It was sprinkled with onions and daikon radish. It melts in the mouth. Does that mean fresh? My guest had the chirashi sashimi. Smaller portion served than places we have been too before. The sushi I selected was mediocre. The crab sushi is imitation crab. I can get that at 99 ranch. I was expecting poor service. But actually was surprised it was attentive.
You can get fat on the cheap here. Always a good sign.
They have a 3 item combo for about 8 or 9 bucks, and it's gigantic. Also you get miso soup, though I don't know what it's made of. Whale splooge or something. But I could be wrong.
I've been wrong in the past...
The best part was the cute waitress with the accent who said "yes" very quickly and with a slight glee. So one time I just asked a shit load of questions that the only answer was "yes." Sadly "Will you marry me?" was abscent.
This place does not sell hamburgers. 5 stars.

Overcrowded and I don't remember it taking reservations. Price and quality is OK, there is cheaper sushi in the area. Service is sparing. The lot gets full so it is hard to find parking there too.
I would give it five because the food was great, it's just the atmosphere was a bit hectic that night! Then again I was there on a Friday night. I wish they had a better waiting area because the line started flood into the dining area! We finally got a nice little table for two, and for how extremely busy the place was, I was shocked at how fast we got our food! Really good. Maybe establishment could be a liiiiittle bit cleaner, but it wasn't even that big of a deal.
Great spot for inexpensive Japanese food. You get your money's worth here. My favorite were the rolls with lobster in them.
Service was friendly - if you can get any service at all. The staff isn't very attentive so good luck with that.

Gin Sushi is a cool spot to hang out and drink beer and sake with friends. Most of the customers are 20 to 30-somethings who often dine there in large groups, especially on weekends... and having a younger crowd makes it an interesting place for people watching.
Since the sushi and sashimi at Gin's is average to me, I admit I wouldn't be going there as often as I have (for over 5 years) if it weren't for a close friend of mine who works there as one of the waitresses. And fortunately she is one of the best, most experienced waitresses at Gin Sushi (and I'm not saying this only because she's a friend)! I'm proud to say that she's one of the better waitresses who's always hardworking and busy, yet attentive to her other customers... and I say this even though she once jokingly wrote something embarrassing on one of the pictures she took of me while dining there (yeah, it's posted on the wall)! Because I have my favorite places for sashimi at other sushi bars and Japanese restaurants, I usually prefer to order the cooked stuff at Gin's like the salmon teriyaki or chicken teriyaki. I'll also split a lobster roll with one of several friends who join me there since most of us enjoy this dish alot... I like it for the crawfish and scallops. On occasion I'll order the spicy hamachi sashimi because it's different.
Since it does get so crowded during the weekends (and sometimes during the weeknights too), I try to get there early... at least by 7pm. After 7pm, there will usually be several groups of people ahead of my party already on the waiting list.

I went alone on a Sunday nite and this place was packed. It is a decent place. The price was acceptable. I pay $23 including tips and a beer for 3 sushi, 1 roll and 1 uni sushi. The Uni sushi is quite good. From what I see, this is a good place for rolls more than sashimi and sushi. There is a good variety of different types of rolls.
Service is questionable. If you can wait for your check and not in a hurry at all, I think you can deal with this. Its not top notch but it's reasonable. Perhaps not a place to impress with a date but it is good for those regular evenings for better than average food.
Big portions, acceptable price, very commercialized.
I used to hit up Gin Sushi on a weekly basis with the ex. We would order so many rolls the staff would sit us at a bigger table expecting more people to come. Nope, we were just fat asses.
They have some pretty creative options & the sushi/sashimi is fresh enough for the cost.
I'm still a little bitter we never made it on the polaroid wall with all the times we ate there in a row.

Just explored this place with a friend and would definitely recommend as a local sushi place around town. I would frequent this place if I ever crave for good sushi at a reasonably low price. Interior decor is casual and they have like polaroid pix of customer's bday meal slapped all over their walls. Place is old but you can tell they repainted to keep it fresh looking. Restroom was small n shabby. Good amount of parking space and is free.
They have tendency to mess up orders as they did for us tonight. We ordered the Lobster special (baked lobster n scallop on california roll) for $9.95, salmon, lobster and spicy tuna handrolls but they gave us yellowtail handroll instead of the salmon. However they kindly apologized for their mistake and we had the yellowtail handrolls for free. The handrolls comes in 6 piece to an order.
Overall, I like the lobster roll the most among all the handrolls I ordered because they were generous in the amount of lobsters and the sauce they drizzled over it made it taste really good. Secondly the Lobster special was really good as we saw almost every table had ordered it so we decided to give it a shot. Once again they topped the california roll with a generous heap of lobsters and baby scallops. The plate of sushi was submerge in their special dark n white sauce which made it taste really bold n flavorful. The handrolls were reasonably cheap for around $3-$4.5 (6 piece).
Overall, it's really good tasting sushi for a low cost. Orders gets messy during peak hours but they give you free miso soup as a starter just to keep you from feeling panicky as you wait. You should expect great tasting sushi that has been modified to suit our American taste. Don't expect traditional Japanese sushi that is very light in taste. It's equivalent to eating chinese at panda express (americanized with bolder taste) except it's japanese n not a chain store.

Sure, the service might be inconsistent; the restaurant could be cleaner; the fish could be a little fresher... But then again, my car could be faster, my wallet could be fatter, and my abs could be more defined...
Just like how I go to Kiyosuzu (http://www.yelp.com/bi...
) for sushi/sashimi in the San Gabriel Valley area, I also go here pretty often with friends and family. This is the only Korean-owned Japanese restaurant I've been to that actually has me as a repeat customer. I'm not trying to throw any racial punches at anyone who runs a restaurant that serves food different from that person's own ethnic background but the majority of the Korean and Chinese owned Japanese sushi joints I've been to resembles Kabuki-like quality. If that kind of taste floats your boat, keep on going down that river. However, Gin Sushi is different.
As I mentioned earlier, the fish quality could be better (especially the tuna) but the salmon and yellowtail sashimi is above average. What I highly recommend and always get is the ALBACORE SASHIMI. They dress that naked white tuna with onions and shredded radish and then they allow the albacore the chance to bathe in an interesting sauce (rice wine vinegar, sesame oil, shaved sesame seeds, soysauce, and sugar... if someone else can taste any other ingredient in that sauce or detects something different, let me know). I also usually get the seaweed salad appetizer.
I'm not one of those people who love creative rolls so if that's what you're looking for, you eat at your own risk. They do happen to be fairly large in size though from what I've seen. The spicy tuna hand roll is also average.
Specials: The sashimi runs about $9.95 per fish type. The sashimi combo is arond $13-$17 but I always order the... yup, albacore. If you're into the cheap lunches (the regular beef teriyaki, tempura, chicken teriyaki, buck buck buck), they have some bargains here for around $6.50 which applies on weekends too I believe. On Sunday afternoons, you see a lot of people ordering these specials... Most likely after church.
Hours of Operation: No lunch break for this place. In other words, you can go here from 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm when most other Japanese restaurants close. Also, this place opens until at least 10:00 everyday so it's pretty convenient.
Service - The lack of or shall I say a very inconsistent level of service... This place is busy and even if they aren't, they still might not serve you the way you'd want to be served. I usually have to wave someone down to get my check and then wave someone again to have them collect my payment but I don't really mind that. I'm not paying top dollar to have them come everytime they see my water go below the half mark. I'm here for the food. If you're fine with doing your deed and not expecting any attention / cuddling / deep philosophical discussions after the fact, this is your place. Remember to try the Albacore sashimi!

Yummy sushi!! Price is good, sushi quality is pretty good too. Convenient parking in the back lot. I always come here with my friends for a decently-priced, delicious meal.
Great place for good sized, decently priced maki. Though I have to try their sushi proper, the fish they use seems to be fresh, and they don't add many fillers as many places do nowadays. I ate here with my bottomless pit of a sister and me absolutely starving, and we went away eating 4 rolls for less that $25 (I think) and absolutely full.
This is a bare-bones sushi joint with ample seating and good service, and has been a staple in the the east Pasadena area since it replaced the last sushi place years ago. It has a very comfortable, familial feel to it, with Polaroids adorning the wall of people who have dined here for one special occasion or another, and the sushi bar had one or two TV monitors so one an just loiter there for a bit, mulling over some ocha or sake and sushi for some time.
Another great thing about this place is that it does not close in the afternoon in preparation for dinner. I'm not sure if that's a bad thing, but being able to get your sushi fix when you're used to working odd hours as I do and not have to go to Kabuki is very, VERY good in my book. I really don't know what took me so long to go here sooner than last month!

This is not sushi people. There are a lot of great sushi restaurants around this area, I dont know what people are talking about. This is first off, Korean own, it is not authentic Japanese. The sushi is not fresh, quality is below average. Scallop tastes like water jello, the plate is ten times larger than the portion given, the service is average, and again, this is not a japanese restaurant.
Me and my friend came here for dinner and it was soo packed.
Their green tea was awesome, you get your own pot with actual green tea, not those powder ones you normally get.
We had a feast that night.
The lobster roll was fantastic. But I think its more of a "Crawfish" roll if you know what I mean. their unagi was good too. Their sushi is just sushi you can get anywhere else, not in a bad way but nothing too special about them but its good. We also tried their Calamari which is good. Nigiri was good as well too.
I'm not racist but I was angry with these group of Mexicans that were making fun of the waiter that was helping them because he had a asian accent which i didn't find funny.
but anyways, go give it a try

The pasadena roll rocks. bake salmon to almost perfection. Most of the sushi rolls are really good. if you look sushi you should try this place out.

How do 2 people run up a bill of $80 at Gin Sushi? Well, it takes practice, it's especially promising when you're asked "gosh, are you guys hungry?" by the waitress... 3 out of the last 10 times we've been there. Let me enlighten you on our checklist:
6-piece raw oysters
2 orders of each sushi: Salmon, Yellow Tail, and Albacore
1 order of each sushi: Scallop, Halibut, and Sweet Shrimp
1 salmon skin roll and 1 lobster special roll
2 large sake, 2 large Sapporo
Last but not least - 2 large stomachs
It's not the "OMG, this is the freshest fish I've ever tasted" kinda good, but it is the Best value for your buck kinda good. A true All-day Happy Hour place where the menu actually states $2.80 per order of sushi, non of that make belief where they puts a slash through the $6.00 and print $3.00 to the side of it to make you think you're getting a bargain... places like Kabuki, erh hem.

The two stars you see here are BARELY TWO STARS.
My sister and her boyfriend ate here a few weeks ago and said it was decent food and a co-worker had mentioned it once. He said the sushi was really fresh and it was cheap.
Cheap sushi is cheap for a reason.
1. The interior could use a LOT of work. Polaroids stuck on the wall do not count as decor, nor do they cover up the holes and stains.
2. Unmatching dishes can be shabby chic, but theirs were not. My sister said it was "those one-of-a-kind buys at Ross".
3. Service was lacking. Almost non-existent. The waiter who brought our plates had that attitude "I'm actually too good to be a waiter this is why I won't put the plate on the table and wait until you take it from me and set it down your damned self."
4. Sushi rolls were of average quality. Couldn't taste too much of the freshness of fish. Nigiri was whatevs. Belly fillers.
5. The tea... roasted rice something tea? I don't know but when I lifted the top of the teapot, what I saw looked like brown maggots and old popcorn. It was not a good way to end a forgettable meal.
Though patrons steadily came through the door, I left feeling unsatisfied. I can't say I won't eat at GS again, but I wouldn't be the one suggesting it.
This place is a great bargain sushi place. It doesn't suck, but its not the best quality fish by any stretch. For the price, you can't beat it. Okay place to get your sushi on, when you're on a budget.
Nice chefs. Service is average, but not so good when busy. Decor is not so good.

Of the many times i've been there, Yoko (aka the worlds first geisha), was the only one who did her job properly, every other time i've been there the service was crap. They either forgot my order, came way later than it should have, or someone else on the other side of the room took it.
As for the taste of the food it's great and the price isn't too bad, specially for the sushi. Portions are good as well that's the reasons why i go back besides wanting to visit the worlds first geisha.

The spicy tuna roll and hand rolls are decent. That's all I get. But I've also tried other special rolls and the teriyaki chicken, and they are all pretty good if you're not expecting high-end sushi but sushi on a everyday basis. The tempura fried ice cream is delicious and big, too. I think you get what you pay for, and I don't want to necessarily shell out $30+/person every time I crave sushi. Table or bar is good, and the geisha server is nice.

Boo for the boyfriend for taking so long in showing me this place!
Yay for the boyfriend for taking me to this awesome place!
They offer yummy sushi at rockin' prices! We ate a buffet's worth and the total was under $40! Try the Colorado Roll, you won't be disappointed. I saw the Dynamite dish next to me and really really wanted to try that. But my tummy sent a clear warning that if I did, I would explode like that man from the Monty Python's who couldn't resist a sliver of mint!
The service was a bit slow but the sushi makes that unimportant, especially when food coma sets in. Come for your birthday and you'll get a polaroid snap on the wall!

UPDATE 5/9/2008
I managed to creep out Amy Blair from LA Eater. I probably shouldn't be, but I'm a little proud. I'll leave it at that since I'm still laughing about this article.

========
I've given this place one too many chances. I'm slapping it with a pair of stars. Sure the food is very good, but since when does that excuse a restaurant from providing awful service?
Gin Sushi is like your friend destined to be an American Idol rock star. She rocks out in the garage and keeps it real, but once stardom is achieved you are left in the dust. A few years back, Gin Sushi was this hidden treasure with so-so service. It was easy to overlook its fallacies. Now, this sushi place has taken way too big of a bite.
This one time, my buddy and I get there on a Friday at 8pm. We get some drinks and the waitress takes down our order. 4 large sapporos and 2 large thingees of hot sake later, we notice how easy it is to get tipsy on an empty stomach. An hour and a half later, we finally get our food. And I won't say what I ordered or else J.W. will be infuriated.
On behalf of the drunken sushi chef, the waitress apologized after we showed a little frustration. They even offered to give us a couple more Sapporos, but we had to pay for them. I told the waitress to pack her bags because I'm taking her on a guilt trip.
All in all, eating here is bitter sweet. It's like french kissing Heidi Klum if she had a cat's tongue.

affordable quality sushi. can't beat that!
I think I always come here at least once when I'm in the area...
Always come with an average-sized group of friends... from 6 (the last trip here) to 14+ on other occasions.
Definitely reasonable prices, and the food is good... not "This is unbelievably delicious good" but definitely "When are we going back to Gin Sushi" good.
Okay, every time we've been here there's been plenty of Hot Sake and Asahi, and occasionally combinations of the two... but I still think they serve good solid food.
Warning: definitely gets packed, so they're can be a wait on occasion... but I don't remember ever waiting TOO long...
They could use a couple nice LCDs though... I could barely see the score from where I was sitting =/
Went here Sat for lunch opens at 11:30.Lunch special not bad for the price.Philly roll wasnt too good.Spider Roll was big but too much sauce so made it too sweet. They forgot our lotus roll so we just cancel it because we were done eating.Basic rolls are like $2.80.Speciality $6+.Overall it was ok dont think ill go back here unless i'm craving for sushi and in the area.
Tips:
1. sit at the bar
2. tell them light mayo and/or eel sauce
3. must try anything with spicy tuna, baked scallops, or lobster
follow those simple rules and you won't have any problems.

I ordered the mixed sashimi; expecting nice mini slabs of fresh fish.. BIG MISTAKE on my part. It turned out to be leftover pieces of various fishes tossed in some spicy wasabi/sesame sauce. ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING. The uni was not fresh and had this foul bitter taste to it that made me want to vomit my own organs out. As a matter of fact, my regurgitated organs would have been more appetizing than the scam they're trying to pull off as sashimi, I simply can not comprehend why this place was so crowded. The only way anyone would get me to come back is if they're pulling me inside by my hair while I"m kicking and screaming bloody murder.
