Rockville, MD
This is my go-to beer store, but not just for the fabulous and ever-changing selection of microbrews and foreign beers. They also have a large and well thought-out wine selection, fun weekly tastings, special events, delicious sandwiches, always friendly staff, and an eclectic mix of cheeses to buy and take home.
My favorites are the Veggie Dave and Steve's Hummus sandwiches (along with a grilled cheese sandwich the only vegetarian choices on their very inventive sandwich menu), the three cheese platter (just right for one person), and whatever interesting thing they have on tap. Service may sometimes be a bit slow if they are busy but it is always a pleasant place to sit and drink a beer, read a wine magazine, and chat with the owner while I wait for my food.
As an added bonus, I can walk there from my house. Life is indeed good! -

I love good beer and I love to support independent businesses, so I'm very happy to have Gilly's just up the Pike from my apartment. It's a cozy spot, with friendly owners/managers, and a wide and ever-changing variety of craft beers to try in house or to go (or both.)
I have only had one sandwich here -- the meatball sub -- but the chalkboard menu is extensive and I have a feeling it's a decent place to grab a bite to accompany the beer you're really there to try, am I right?
I can always find my standby Sierra Nevada and Dogfish Head varieties here, along with seasonal releases from Brooklyn Brewery and Breckinridge, which I love. (Please bring the Vanilla Stout back soon. :)) Oh, and they tend to have Abita varietals, which makes me happy too. One of the fun things about Gilly's is the mix-and-match shelves, where you can build your own six pack of beers from all over the world that you'd like to try. You may pay a few dollars more here for a six-pack, but it's worth it to me to keep it around.
The store also has a sizeable wine selection that I haven't delved into, but given their focus on quality, I'm sure it doesn't disappoint. There are wine and beer tastings weekly, and even on random nights when I've been there lately, the tables in front and back have been full. It's a fun spot. -

Great place to buy beer in the Rockville region. There are hundreds of varieties and, more interesting, beer is sold either by the pack or by the unit (i.e. you can combine bottles to make your own variety pack). There are hundreds of varieties of beer, going from the most common to the most exotic. The selection includes a good number of beers from American breweries but it also includes Belgian, German, Italian and even some Japanese beers.
Last, you can drink beer at GIlly's (although the place is really small and it has only two tables) but if you decide to drink anything that is not on the tap, you have to pay a 2 dollar cork fee. -

Gilly's is a craft beer mecca with a great selection of wines and seasonal beers on tap while you shop. Not sure the young lady's name but she seems to know everything about the product in the store and has been more than helpful any time I've had a question about a seasonal items, food pairings, tasting notes, etc. Have yet to eat there but the menu seems like to be that of a new-age deli. Only knock on Gilly's is the cost. I know the high quality of their products but there's many things that can be purchased for less a half mile down the road. I'd recommend this gem to anyone, great atmosphere, great staff, great booze!

I hesitate to rave about this place because then you'll show up and frankly there's not enough room for us all to sit. This is a great little wine and beer market that conveniently happens to make awesome sandwiches -- and, even better, can sell you a glass of fancy wine or beer before you go home with a bottle or six-pack. It's got a nice small-town vibe that makes me forget I live off the corridor of hellish stupidity that is Rockville Pike. The only problem is that there's only seating for about 16...so eat fast and get outta my way!

this place has an amazing selection, but they are much more expensive than most restaurants and beer stores in the area. You're definitely paying a premium for the selection. They always have several excellent beers on tap though, and will always share a taste. Awesome sandwiches and gourmet cheeses too.

This place is a freaking gem.
It's located right by Twinbrook Metro Station next to the Urban BBQ.
This is the place to go for those of us that like to drink REAL beer, not that light Bud or Miller crap. They have a great selection of craft beers and wine as well as a few beers on draft. They have a bunch of sandwiches made fresh (Which I gotta admit I've never tried) and also let you bring food from other places to eat if you want (usually grab UBBQ next door and get a cold one)
Gilly's also has an online listserv which emails you about events and tasting they have every week which is pretty awesome. I ended up going to the Heavy Sea's tasting and fell in love with that particular brewery.
Awesome place overall! -

Love Gilly's! They are really helpful and know a lot about their wines and beers. If you need to pair something or give a gift, they are a huge help. My only reason for not giving them 5 stars is the prices are a little steep on the typical stuff. If I just need a few beers for people coming over I would probably go somewhere else to save a few dollars. Otherwise I love them!

Second date: lunch. "Want to meet at this great sandwich place by Twinbrook Metro?" Naturally, I was intrigued, knowing not of any place called "great" near Twinbrook.
And I walked in and found not only a tiny sandwich cafe, but BEER MECCA. Mindblowing. I spent twenty minutes gaping at the beers I love and the beers I've never heard of.
Sandwiches were lovely. Company was fantastic (and regulars, a plus). Enjoyed the beer on tap, and I walked out with a 22oz of Ozzy from Brewer's Art. Scoooore for Sunday lunch.Listed in: Amber Waves of Hops

This place is really a wonderful small spot. I work down the road and am a constant frequenter of UBQ, and saw a sign one day of a wine tasting they were doing which immediately caught my attention.
Firstly, they host many many different tastings. Beer, Wine, I've even been to a Sake tasting. I would say they do on average about 2 a week. Sometimes more, sometimes less. I guess it all depends. But they do have a mailing list that you can sign up for and they'll send out e-mails to let you know of all the specials and events. (speaking of which, I just received my e-mail as I'm typing this review)
Selection. The selection is amazing. I used to not be a beer drinker, so I slowed myself in with Miller Lite (a true disservice to myself) but am now really getting interested in the Craft Beers, and the vast variety of what they have, could keep me busy testing for quite some time. Same goes for the wines. They carried this one wine, a chocolate wine, absolutely amazing. I can't remember the name but it's about $30 dollars a bottle, a little pricey but it's a nice splurge for yourself or a special occasion. They also have a great variety of what they put on tap, it's always changing though never stays the same for too long which is great.
Food- I love the sandwiches here. They're creative, but most of all good. I will admit that $10 for a 9inch sandwich is a little pricey, but take into consideration that these aren't skimpy sandwiches. I had one, that I struggled to be able to bite because it was packed full of deliciousness. The ingredients are fresh, and they take their time making the sandwiches. You can either eat them there, or get them to go. They also sell platters and meats and cheeses that you can just purchase. They'll let you sample the yummy deli-ness.
If you eat there, you can purchase some wine or beer to be able to drink, but they will charge you an uncorking fee/opening fee, because they have to be the ones to serve you there. I think it might be 2 dollars for beer, maybe 3 for wine.
This is overall a great place. The people are nice and friendly, I had been here a few times before that HomeRun deal came out, and so I immediately knew to take advantage of that one. So this may not be a place that you frequent because of it being a little more expensive, but it is good quality. -

One of the best and most friendly establishments I have ever been too. The atmosphere is mellow. The service goes above and beyond and the sandwiches are delicious. Nothing beats a cold drink from Gilly's.

I came in here with a HomeRun deal for $10 worth of food/beer/wine. I went to the counter and bought a sandwich and a drink which came shy of the $10 so I let them keep the change as opposed to find something else to consume or purchase.
They had a nice selection of non-alcoholic drinks so I got a tea which was perfect for today. I ordered the Caitlin sandwich and sat at the table until they delivered it.
The food was tasty and the drink hit the spot. I'm only giving 4/5 stars because if I didn't have the coupon, the pricing would be a bit too expensive for what I bought. Otherwise I enjoyed my lunch and the atmosphere. -

I love this place. Let me count the reasons.
1. Best craft beer selection in the area.
2. Selected craft beers on tap.
3. Delicious and inventive deli sandwiches.
4. Friendly and knowledgeable staff.
Grab some UBQ next door and pair it with a draft beer at Gilly's. Life does not get much better than this.
It get crowded after 6PM, especially on Fridya and Saturday nights. This is definitely where are the beer hipsters come to hang out. -
Review from Trevor M.
If a craft beer could wrap it's sudsy arms around you and a fine wine can kiss you and a sandwich with Cheetos can make you feel like you're in a Roman orgy. You've arrived...you're at Gilly's.
This is the place. This is my home away from home. This is where the beer box becomes my confessional and the Holy water flows out of fresh taps (which changes just about on a weekly basis) full of hoppy goodness. Yes, Holy water can have hoppy goodness.
Beer tastings, wine tastings, cheese tastings, special tastings (wine & cheese pairings), people tastings....just making sure you're still paying attention. They don't really taste people...not that i'm aware of. But, do you pair that with a white or red wine?
Craft Beer: Incredible selections ranging from local to state to international. German, italian, Belgian, English, Japanese....Bethesda. Yes, they have it. And you can make your own six pack from the singles case. It's not a single? They are willing to break up a six pack just for you.
Fine Wine: French, Chilean, Italian, South Africa, Canada, Oregon, California...Maryland. Yes, they have it.
Heck, they even have a good selection of sake.
So, they also support local beer and wine.
Food: How can I write a review and not include their menu or cheese case with great bleus, manchego, and great meats. Sandwiches. Get the sandwiches. Timmy G's Cruncher, possibly the best Italian sub on the planet (that's another review...wait for it. coming to a Yelp near you), Nancy's country Pate and you've got to try TK's Tuna. Mmmm, tuna.
And they care...they have fund raisers, they have Teacher Tuesdays where teacher's with ID get 15% off and they have celebrations like the 4-20 day (you know what that means...yes, you're going to have the munchies). No, it means that you're going to have fun. And for goodness sakes...get on their email list...get coupons, get info...get going and drink.
Go in....have a beer, have some wine...have a sandwich...have fun. Make some friends...This is Gilly's. You won't be disappointed. Heck, i'm going there now...and yes, i'm checking in. -

Gilly's is amazing. They have an amazing selection of beer, great sandwiches, and awesome customer service.
The sandwiches here are GINORMOUS. They don't skimp on fillings and everything is very fresh. They have a sandwich with cheetos in it which I'm dying to try but I am a devout fan of their roast beef sandwich! Horseradish spread on roast beef...om nom nom nom!
They have really good beers on tap as well. As for the beer, they have the rogue mocha porter which is one of my favs. They also have exotic belgian beers, a good selection of sake and wines...but I'm here for the beer! They also sell individual beer bottles so you can mix and match.
As I found out today. they also host many events and have daily specials. Definitely will check them out and perhaps additional updates to this review! -

Just wanted to mention I returned months later and the manager remembered the wine I selected! He invited me to enjoy the wine and beer tasting with the other patrons. In addition you can enjoy your purchase with no corkage fee however since I came alone something didn't seem right about um DRINKING A BOTTLE WINE BY MYSELF. AT THE LIQUOR STORE. Let's wait at least two more birthdays before I start down that path.

A little on the pricey side, but you can't ask for a better mix of good alcohol and community service. They often hold events and fundraisers for local schools, children's sports teams, etc... I can tolerate the $1.50 markup on my case of beer to support my community.
Definitely sign up for the email newsletter - they often send coupons and promotional stuff (including free draft beers!). -

I am so happy that i live nearby Gilly's. They have a nice, small craft beer selection, a few beers on tap, and great sandwiches. The staff are very knowledgeable about beer and wine.
Only gripe is the "corking fee" on their bottled beer. I purchased a single beer and they wanted to charge me a couple of dollars to open it. I took my beer, wedged it against the table in the back, and popped the top off myself.
I guess I need to buy a bottle opener key chain.
@ Johnna:
Thanks for the reply Johnna. Online smack down received!
I appreciate you taking the time to explain why you charge the corking fees. Normally I would not write a response to this type of correspondence; however you comment is excessive and ill-informed. In this particular case, the fault is mine. In my initial, brief comment I failed to explain the entire situation because I did not feel like I had to. Now I think I need to defend myself.
On the particular day in question, I had enjoyed a draft and came back for another, however it was tapped. The person making sandwiches recommended a bottle from the cooler that was similar to the one I had just enjoyed. (It was a great recommendation, thanks!) When I was told about the extra fee, I simply asked, "Well, could I simply open the bottle on my own?" I did not get a response nearly as thorough as yours, just as simple, "We have to charge the fee." Enter the sandwich maker who knows his beer, "Sure you can. People do it all the time." "Great!" thinks me the customer. So I opened my beer ON THE FOOTREST of one of your high-top tables or chairs in the back. I am sorry for that, but it was a part of the furniture that was already significantly worn. I would not mar your tabletop in the same way that I would not mar my own tabletop at home.
I have been to your store many times and will return. I knew before your post that I am UNCOOL. I do not appreciate you accusing me of stealing when in fact I have purchased over $150.00 worth of tasty goods at your store in the past two weeks. The mark on the tabletop was not me. I am sorry for this absurd online banter. AND next time I will pay an extra two dollars to make up for the unpaid corking fee.
Cheers!

Pluses: Best beer and wine selection I've found since moving here, which makes my little Northwestern heart palpitate with glee! I love that they regularly rotate ontap beers with interesting and seasonal selections. The beer selection features breweries from around the country, instead of the same imported European beers and two or three regional microbreweries. The staff is knowledgeable, and have always been extremely friendly and accommodating - which is a nice respite from the brusqueness of DC. AND they have regular free beer and wine tastings! Yay, free alcohol!
I only have two complaints - the food, and the price. I've had a few sandwiches and, though far from being bad, aren't worth the cost. I think next time I decide to eat here I'll probably try one of their cheese plates, because it looks like they have nice, varied selection of cheeses. The beers aren't exorbitantly priced, but the wine can be. A bottle of Charles Smith wine that I'd purchased at Rodman's was $10 cheaper than listed at Gilly's. -
Review from Libby F.
Gilly's has a wonderful selection of craft beers. I like that you can buy one to try before buying a six pack of something new.
I purchased an organic hard cider from England (Samuel Smith's). It was $5.99 for a 550ml bottle which is about what you'd pay for a Strongbow pint at a bar.
They also do beer and wine tastings on a regular basis. For example, Friday is a Belgian Beer tasting and there is a Kosher wine for Passover tasting on an upcoming Sunday. I hope to make it to one of their events soon.
The staff member I spoke with was helpful. While they don't carry Bell's Two Hearted ale (blame MoCo licencing), they have many other fine choices to choose from. It is a craft beer lover's paradise in here. -

Best selection of craft beers in vicinity. One of the few stores that consistently carries seasonal selections.
Deli is decent. Next door to Urban BBQ and will let you bring food from there to eat with your beer(s) at one of their tables. Not sure if you can bring beers to BBQ, though. Usually three craft beers on tap. -

My favorite craft beer store in Montgomery County. I love their selection and how friendly everyone is there.
They keep a few beers on tap which you can taste or purchase a glass. They keep a stock of refrigerated singles and packs. There are also several shelves worth of unrefrigerated singles and packs of all sizes.
There are regular events at Gilly's so it is worth signing up for their email newsletter. -
Review from Angel W.
Gilly's sandwich choices sounded so good online, but the actual sandwich fell flat. I tried the Steve's Hummus sub with Roasted Red Pepper Hummus, Mixed Greek Olives, Brocco Sprouts and Cucumbers on toasted Wheat Baguette. I am a huge fan of olives. The olives were decent but the combination was not so good. The Timmy G's Ham Cruncher sounds interesting; Shaved Smoked Ham, Cheddar, Yellow or Spice Mustard and Cheetos (Yes, the Cheetos are on the sandwich!). I don't eat meat but the cheetos sound interesting.
However, I don't think I will be back for several reasons. 1) The parking lot is in a difficult location across from the Guitar Store and next to Kitt's piano. It resides at a very tough intersection; tough to get in and tough to get out. 2) They take a long time to make the sandwiches. I was the only one in line and it took quite a while. Plus they had to unroll plastic wrap from the cucumber, open the olive tub, pull the sprouts out of a plastic bag.(all sorta the way you would make a sandwich at home). The problem is this is time consuming, especially if there is a line. 3) the sandwich I had was nothing special.
They have lots of beer and wine choices and two little bistros you can sit at but I would rather be at a real wine bar. Had I gone here to pick up some interesting beer choices, I would rate this higher but I just wanted a decent sandwich. -

Brilliant little shop where you can make your own 6 packs form their very extensive choice of craft beers. They also have a tap with a very decent IPA where you can sit and drink. Did not get to try the food but will be back next time I'm in the area. Wish it was open a little bit later though.

So they lost 1 star from me for price, but I am learning that to be the case in this area (newbie to the area....), so it probably isn't their fault.
It's not the biggest selection ever, but it gets the job done. I was getting sick of the same crap at the other beer/wine stores. Gilly's had a nice selection of different beers for me to grab, which made me very happy indeed. You can also (I think, cos I didn't do it) mix and match yourself up a 6 pack of random beers. If that is the case, I love that :) They also had sake, which I hadn't found anywhere else yet and which I sometimes like to buy when I get the urge to do some Japanese cooking at home.
What really was a kicker for me was that when I pulled into the lot I was just planning on finding some beer and then moving on to find some lunch. I was starving. I remember walking in, saying hello to the lady behind the counter, then doing a double take as I slowly processed the fact that they had sandwiches scribbled all over a giant menu board! It was a pleasent surprise, so I grabbed a soda and a sandwich, watched some golf on their TV, then went ahead and grabbed my beer.
So next time I am out for some good beer and have the desire to enjoy a nice sandwich, Gilly's it is! Friendly folks, good sandwiches, and a nice selection of beers for me to pick from. -

I can't believe Gilly's has been around for almost a year and I just discovered it about a month ago. Since it is located right next to my office, most of my visits have been to grab some lunch from the "deli". Having tried the Katie Brie, Hummus Plate, Country Pate Sandwich, and Hummus Pita, I am sorry to say that I find their food offerings very average. I keep waiting to be blown away like some of the other reviewers, but it just hasn't happened.
Last night I finally stopped by after work to have a pint of Dogfish Head 120 Minute on draft. I had been thinking about it all week after receiving an e-mail that they had gotten it in. The 120 is as intense as you might imagine. I am glad I was able to try it, though I think I may stick with the 90 Minute in the future. A few sips into the 120, I was already starting to feel buzzed.
The after-work feel of Gilly's is completely different than the workday feel (as one would expect). Lots of people were just hanging out, drinking beer, chilling, browsing. Someone was playing Jimmy Buffett's "Stories We Could Tell" on the guitar, which was almost enough to make me add another star.
Gilly's has a pretty solid selection of beer (I haven't really looked too much at the wine), and they take requests for special orders. I think I have to give them the most credit for so zealously loving, stocking, and promoting Dogfish Head beer; they carry more DFH variety than any local grocery store.
If you live or work in the area and like beer and wine, I would highly recommend getting on their mailing list, as they appear to have events and specials at least weekly. I wish them continued success in the future. Rockville needs more places like this. -
Review from Nicole L.
I was pleasantly surprised to walk into Gilly's and saw all the specialty beer and wine they carried. They even had artisan cheeses and meats, and people actually ordered sandwiches from this craft beer store. They carried a good selection of Belgian beer, Starhill IPAs and Dogfish 90 minutes. I was thrilled to see the Yuengling pint cans I bought four of them for a party how awesome! They also had this organic orange peel in dark chocolate - super tasty chocolate!! The blackboard listed themed wine tasting events at the store on various dates, can't wait to try it. Love this store.

This is a great little beer/wine shop with a very friendly staff. Last time I went, I also noticed that they have sandwiches and a little dining area available. I've stopped here just a few times when in the area but each time has been great. The staff is friendly and always asks if we need help. When I asked about a local wine that they didn't carry, the saleswoman said that she'd look into it and see what she could do.
I also noticed that they seem to be doing a lot more events like wine tasting, beer tasting and dinner events. Our last visit was during a wine tasting and it had a nice little turnout.
It has a great mom and pop kind of feel with beer/wine choices that not every beer store has. The staff also seems knowledgeable is has always been willing to help.
Two thumbs up! -

You can swing in to pick up a sixer or stay for the evening playing games with your friends and talking shop with the proprietors. The couple running the shop know their wines and brews. I stop in to pick up my beer and usually end up taking something new home because they were holding a taste test and got me hooked. If you order the cheese platter, don't be fooled if it looks small! Three of us stuff ourselves on it and a couple bottles of wine.
Hopefully their sign on the outside comes soon! -

The Maryland side of DC sure has a dearth of good beer stores. It sure isn't like on the VA side where Total Wine rules (even though their offices are in MD...go figure) and most liquor stores only stock the basics. There's basically only two stores in the area with a decent beer selection and Gilly's is one of them. Place has a decent selection of singles but for the most part, it's six packs and cases you'll be purchasing. Prices are very high and I'm not sure if it's because we're in Maryland or because the store itself is just pricing it a bit high. Place has a small deli and even a few taps which is really nice. Overall, I'd buy a single of an interesting local brew and take it over to Urban BBQ for some Ribs and Pulled Pork.

Great selection of beer. My friend Chris K swears by this place. I think only because it's right next to Urban BBQ. Their subs are decent, but I think I'm still partial to Twinbrook Deli. Deli selection is decent and they do put in a lot of meat in there. I think the bread can be a little better though.
They have a nice selection of beer and, living in Rockville, it's not too far of a drive when I want a decent six pack. They have a uncorking/uncapping fee if you want to drink in the store, but I think they waive it on Tuesdays (or Thursdays?). Since you can sample individual beers, you end up paying $3-$4 for an individual bottle. But for the quality of the beer, it actually ends up being better than going to a bar. -

Definitely a great place with friendly staff. They've got a considerable selection of beer, both in singles and in 6-packs, thought it's slightly more expensive than other places of the same ilk. If you are looking for your regular ol' mass-produced stuff, I would go to the Montgomery County Liquor Store. But for everything else, come here.
The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful, it's a big part of what keeps me coming back. Love the selection of beer, and they frequently have both beer and wine tastings for free, so you can try plenty of new stuff. I have a hard time walking out of this place without buying beer, it seems like I always find something new to try. And I haven't even tried the food yet, though I keep meaning to. Definitely one of the best beer/wine places around. -

Great sandwiches and great selections of wine and beer. The owners and staff always seem genuinely happy to have you in the store, although you can often get a "clicky" vibe from them. If I am nitpicking I think the more common beers and wine are over priced. There are certainly high end and hard to find options here that deserve the higher price, but why tack the same pricing to the same old common stuff?
