don't let the wave of pine sol that slaps you in the face upon entry dissuade you, gill's is great! i hesitated upon sitting down but there were 5 tables of indian people eating there so i decided to brave it.
wow am i glad i did! it was very clean (hence the pine sol!) and super tasty. our waitress was quick but friendly and the man who brings out the food was super efficient and radiated positivity.
i felt like i was eating indian food at the Chelsea hotel in the 70's. what a great, CHEAP, groovy find!
This place is a trip, I felt like I was walking into some type of porno/psychedelic Indian film from the 70's. First off, it's in the back of this weird hotel, meaning that this hotel seems like home of homeless people of downtown, the hotel seems like something from the 1930's, then you reach the restaurant in the back and you're hit with the neon lights, and you're like WTF!
The food here is pretty alright and it's an all you can eat buffet at about $10 with tax. There's really no selection about 10 different items. Nothing fancy or extraordinary, just so so, but if you like being surrounded by a blast from the 1970's Indian past then this is the place to go.
The only reason why I ate here was my boss took us here for a lunch outing. I don't think I'd really go back anytime soon, unless I was looking for a hooker that lived at the hotel, or to feel like I'm again in some type of Indian porn.
So I literally just discovered this place about an hour ago here on Yelp while doing a search for "delivery downtown Los Angeles." I LOOOVE Indian food, so I had to try. Plus, their rating was decent. Anyway, I went to their website and discovered I could order online by 10:20pm! It was already 10:00pm, so I quickly put in an order.
My order went through at 10:15pm and they came around 10:45pm or so. After the delivery guy left, I opened my package and found that there were a few things missing. I called the restaurant and they were really nice there... the guy ended up coming back (he forgot the other bag in his car). Anyway, I unfortunately over-ordered and I made a mistake of ordering 3 rices... which actually, they only gave me 2... so I guess that just means I gave them a really big tip, which I'm ok with cuz' the food turned out to be good.
Anyway, I'm definitely going to order from them again and try different things! And next time I'll know not to order so much!
So far: the Samosa is great, the Chicken Tikka is not bad either (although I actually wanted the Chicken Tikka Masala (but I made the mistake). The Tandoori Chicken Salad is ok. I didn't care too much for the Garlic Naan... although I'm sure it's better fresh out of the oven at the restaurant. And the Rice (that I over-ordered and overpaid for)... is just rice. It'd def be better if I had ordered curry!
I'm just so glad to know that there's an Indian restaurant I can order delivery from in downtown! I'll try to update as I try more things.
Went for a change-of-pace lunch today (getting tired of the usual suspects at the 7th & Fig food court) and had the buffet. Nothing bad to say about it at all, the veggie offerings were very good, tandoori chicken was juicy, the yellow daal nice and garlic-y. Fresh naan bread on the table, $8.95 plus tax. Nothing not to like. "We" were an ex-pat Brit (me), an Indian from Mumbai and a native SoCalifornian, and we all enjoyed it.
Yep, there's a "B" on the wall, but I've eaten in places in Mumbai that would make your hair curl, so no worries on that score.
There's only so much pizza and Chinese you can get as take out/delivery when you don't want to cook. Gill's has become our go-to for no-cook nights. They either deliver or we walk over and pick it up -- they're often busy enough that we don't want to wait to be served at a table.
Lunch has an all-you-can-eat menu for under $10. Dinner is from a menu, at very reasonable prices. I especially like their biryani rice dishes and the naan with various fillings. Their homemade chutney is yummy also. Portions are large enough for 2 meals.
My son is in that "don't want anything I don't already eat" phase, but he loved the tandoori chicken salad.
Well worth a try, deep in the bowels of the Stillwell, which is looking much better inside than it used to.
I've never been a big fan of Indian cuisine due primarily to the strong herbal taste and spices. The first indian restaurant I ever tried left a bad impression. I've tried several other places after that but never caught on.
So this was a gamble and since I've always been a risk taker, I took the chance.
And I gotta say, it was pretty darn good!
Its inside the Stillwell Hotel on Grand Ave which just got remodeled and looks alot better now inside.
I've gone back a few other times and the restaurant itself has been remodeled as well. At night, it has a nice intimate vibe.
Their Curries are my recommendations. Any of the Tandoori dishes are great (Chicken, Fish, Seafood, etc)
Their Tandoori Breads are great. Light yet crispy.
I liked their Indian beers as well.
I had a great experience so I went back for their lunch buffet. Great deal at $7.95 which comes with about 10 or so selections including fruit and dessert which was not bad.
The food was good here during a lunch buffet, but I can't say I'm rushing to get back. I was alone and clearly overlooked by the staffers who were rushing around to wait on all the business lunchers. They were packed, but instead of asking me to wait or turning me away, they stuck me at a rickety table 12 inches from the kitchen door. I didn't even get a table cloth. And no air-conditioning, even though it was really warm. They had fans blowing, which was weird. I know I'm a wuss, but I'm American. I need air conditioning when I eat in a windowless hole in the wall restaurant in a motel. Humor me.
Like I said, the food was good -- but the variety on the buffet was nil.
This is a great little hole in the wall of a place. I think most people that frequent it, walk to it, but some (like me) will drive to downtown just to eat here. ok maybe that's a stretch since i work in downtown.
anyways, this isa cozy family feeling of a place. super smiles and polite is how they operate. it's buffet so YUM, but i just wish they had more variety becaseu going back for my 4th plate of the same thing is a little boring, but trust me. it tases good so i end up making that 4th trip without much reservation.
if you have the chance, you gotta try this place. don't be turned off by walking thru an old hotel lobby to what looks like it might be a smoky back room in the prohibition days. it's worth it!
I've eaten here and ordered delivery many times. Most of the comments here are spot on: hole in the wall, small family-owned business, and reasonably tasty Indian food for downtown LA.
Well, part of their small business issues is running a well-oiled restaurant (no pun intended). And today I received the full brunt of their lack of common sense. I waited almost 2 hours for my food to arrive. When I ordered, they told me 40 minutes. An hour later, I called, and a little child picked up. I waited patiently as the child passed the phone to an adult, who didn't speak any English. I waited again and finally talked to the person I think took my order. He asked me what my order was, ran into the kitchen, came back a minute later and told me 15 more minutes.
I thought that was it. But then he called me two more times to get my credit card number. I'm not sure if the phone line was unclear, despite my calling from my land line to the restaurant, or a language issue, but he just couldn't comprehend the digits I read off. They finally sorted it out and the food arrived luke-warmish and very late.
I would say if you're craving Indian food in downtown, give this place a try. The food isn't bad at all. Just avoid the delivery service if possible, nothing worse than being hungry and dealing with the vagaries of their operational challenges.
I was so very happy to find an Indian food place with vegetarian items that will deliver downtown! The delivery time was pretty decent, about 45 minutes as they predicted. The food was OK... not great, not terrible, just OK. It seemed freshly prepared, which was good, but maybe a little too fresh in the case of the Aloo Gobhi, which had chunks of mostly raw potatoes in with the cauliflower. The garlic Naan was wonderful, the Raita (yogurt with cucumber) was OK. The samosa were kind of bland, (but they often are, so no big deal,) but the sweet sauce that came with them was just... weird, like some kind of tamarind jelly-paste. My carnivore BF enjoyed the Chicken Tikka Masala, but we were both shocked to find that we payed 3 dollars for a teeny tiny sandwich/snack sized box of plain basmati rice! I mean, it was good rice and everything, but not 3-dollars-for-4-ounces good. In fact, the Aloo Gobhi was also crammed into the same kind of tiny styrofoam box to the breaking point, then wrapped with plastic wrap, and was leaking everywhere. Maybe they just ran out of boxes on this particular occasion? Or maybe it's just $7.95 for 4 ounces of raw potatoes in sauce. Anyway, the truth is, I'll give Gill's another shot simply because it was freshly made, they have vegetarian dishes and they deliver downtown. I'm hoping that I have better luck next time, because I'm really getting sick of pizza being the best delivery option downtown!
I ordered from here tonight after reading the reviews to give it a shot.
Pricing was reasonable, tandori chicken was not bad although small portion, good extras, didn't forget the mint sauce, hot sauce, extra nan, delivery was fast, driver very courteous - all for 20 bucks including soup, side dish of potatoes, rice, etc. Yah, worth it. Man on the phone was very polite as well.
I would say 6.5/10 for LA. For Toronto, you would be back to 2-3/10 but we have a huge Indian population and there is a lot of competition out there.
I will try the chicken tikka and see if that is good on the next go.
Yummy! This place is a real gem in downtown. It is a family run business, i.e. the whole family is there helping to make and serve the food. As such the customer service is a little spotty, but the food makes up for that ten-fold. The booths look very comfortable, but they are really worn out - so if you take grandma and grandpa there you may want to ask for a table. The chicken tikka masala is amazing, make sure to try the different sauces and relishes they have (most of these you have to specifically order).
Reasonably priced and delicious!
As far as Indian food downtown goes your options are kind of limited. Gil's isn't bad at all. Everything I've had has been good, if not a little on the spicy side. My usual dishes are Chicken Tikka, Chicken Masala, Saag Aloo, Bharta and garlic Naan.
Also, I've only ordered delivery, I've never eaten there so I can't comment on the service. Delivery usually takes about 45 minutes though.
Yes, it's in the back of a seedy hotel. Yes, it's a little bit creepy.
But they've got a pretty good, reasonably priced Indian buffet, with personal service and, contrary to some reports, free naan.
Really, we were quite satisfied, and plan to go back, or to order delivery.
What a weird joint.
I've been to Gill's a couple of times, and I'm always struck by how messy the area outside their door is. It's like the hotel is permanently renovating that room or using it for storage.
Anyway, I enjoy Gill's for what it is: affordable, decent Indian food. I've only done the buffet thing here because the attitude invariably becomes, as my friend said today, "I have to wait to eat?" I'm a boring diner at Gill's, only really digging into the naan, rice, chicken korma and tandoori.
I'm not sure what happened with Jeannie, but our buffet meals have always included unlimited naan. It's not the crazy flavored stuff (they have garlic naan, which I love for obvious reasons), but it does the job. The tandoori can get a bit dry, but it's usually pretty flavorful. My favorite thing to do is roll a bit of the korma around in the rice, and roll it up in the naan with a bit of tandoori. The chicken in the korma is tender and soaks up the flavors of the curry well, providing a nice contrast to the naan or rice I pair it with. There isn't a ton of spice in this somewhat creamy curry, so it's safe for all.
I have yet to delve into the various lentil dishes or ANY of the regular menu because that chicken is good enough for me. It was a nice way to come out of hangover, that's for sure.
Attentive service, friendly folks working here, but the size of the place is kind of restrictive. It sits maybe 30 or so in the room, and the buffet is but 6 or 7 chafing dishes lined up against a wall. When it gets busy, the scene is a bit crazy, but the food comes out regularly and naan/drink refills are available at the drop of a hat. Fun music too :)
The 5 stars is for the food only! Called on a week night the person taking orders could hardly speak any english he said it would be 40 minutes and it took like and hour and a half for the food to show up but the food was sooo good I will def order here again, just far in advance next time.
Great all you can eat Indian buffet at lunch. They bring warm fresh Indian flat bread to your table. I would like it if they had signs on the dishes. That way I would actually know the names of the dishes I like. Great change of pace.
This place isn't worth the trip, the money, or a lengthy review.
Strangest place I've ever been...it's in the back of a sketchy looking hotel that has a vending machine with condoms and really dirty carpet.
I had the chana masala but it was rather watery and not too flavorful.
I don't have anything else to say...except that I'd probably only go back to this place if every other Indian joint closed for good and I happened to be starving in front of the sketchy hotel...and that's still a maybe.
Delicious, friendly, I love this place. The best part is that it's hidden in a residence hotel. Next to Hank's...I'm not much of a naan eater but I had plenty when I went, it's delicious and fresh. All the items on the buffet are replaced regularly and the flavors are fantastic. I still haven't tried the menu items but I am dying to taste their saag paneer. I thank Ganesh that I now know about an Indian place downtown, delicious besides.
Living downtown for a few years now, Gill's was one of the only restaurants that would stay open past the business crowd 6pm exodus. When first moving to LA, we'd get lost everytime we left our building, so delivery was a great option!
This is as good as any Indian I've had (which granted is Electric Lotus, Surya and Nawab in Santa Monica). I love, love, love the Chicken Tikka, Garlic Naan and Samosas. We always get delivery in fear that the actual restaurant may spoil our high acclaim for the food.
If you live in the downtown area, this is a great option for when you don't feel like venturing out. Delivery usually takes 45 minutes to an hour.
came here by myself on a mon lunch before 1 pm
this place was bumpin! there were people waiting outside for a table; there are 4 comfy booths that seat 5 i believe, & 4 tables in the middle of the joint that seat 4...
ive been to hanks before so i totally understand the murkiness feel to the stillwell.. if youve never been here, this isnt the biltmore, nor is it trader vics.. but thats besides the point...
the food here was delcious, hot ( i hate hot food!!! i had to stare at the steam oozing off my chicken tikki for like an hour..)
the salad was fresh; mixed greens, not brown romaine..
everything was fresh!!!!!! im not an indian food expert, but i have eaten the cuisine a million times ( i used to be vegan for years) and at various locations, so i def., know nasty indian food from the good shit..
my wonderful lunch ( im not hungry right now, and i ate 5 and a half hrs ago) plus tip set me back less than ten bucks..
considering the stillwell is pretty dive-ish & hostel-ish, the bathrooms smelled good! clean, fresh, not stinky...
i'll be back next week, or in 2 wks..
this is on the east side of grand; 3 buildings south of 8th st... there is a lot next to the still well that validates for $2
The four stars are for the lunch buffet, not the decor or service. If you can get past the creepy dankness of it all, $8.95 gets you a great all-you-can-eat lunch. I want to keep eating until I explode, but at some point self-preservation kicks in and yells "stop!" Highlights include Tandoori chicken, daal of the day, mataar paneer, brinjal bhaji, naan bread, salad, fresh oranges and some kind of desert.
**addendum**
Never, ever order delivery from Gils, unless you really, really like waiting. It's always been slow, but it had been well over 2 hours when I finally canceled my delivery last time. They didn't seem too sad about it either. I'll stand by my low-budget 4 stars because I still like the food.
Very back of the stilwell hotel. Was suprised that health inspection certificate grade was a "B" and also posted very visibly! And since their website points to yelp, they need to watch out, can't be "B" forever. That's just a tad scary for a 'decent' restaurant. Walked in and there was only one couple in the place, and they looked like they wanted to get out. Decided to try it anyways, but we avoided things that we thought might be a touch sketchy if things weren't ok (such as mango lassi). The samosas were a bit greasy, and the consistency of the filling was a bit mushy - usually I like something whole pieces of peas or something. The Lamb Vindaloo we had was not bad, and was the saving grace of the experience. The nan wasn't bad either, I like a nan bread that isn't too doughy, and this was passable but a small portion. All in all the meal wasn't the best I have had, but when I am craving indian in downtown, it'll do. The wait staff brought everything out promptly, however they seem to be confused when a few more people showed up, and stepping on each others service. When we were done I had to ask twice for the bill, and I had the distinct feeling that the staff had been instructed to delay diners exit as long as possible (I saw the same thing happening to the previous couple trying to leave). I'd eat here again, but only when I was craving Indian and not going to drive out of downtown. There is much better indian food out there.
OK, Let me just say, it is not a "seedy hotel." You people who think the Stillwell is seedy need to go a few blocks East, to Olive, Main Street, Broadway-Those are seedy hotels. The ones with filled with sex offenders and drug addicts. The Stillwell is full of European tourists, some FIDM students, a number of elderly and working class people (chefs, construciton workers, hotel clerks at the BIltmore--People you could trust with your grandmother). Just because the rest of the block is $$$$ doesn't mean this is a nasty place. As for Gill's, it is a family business run by good people and I always love the food, they always do their best, and the wine is a good value.
I noticed that there weren't any reviews from the downtown regulars, so I thought I'd share some thoughts.
For people who work downtown, this is a great location to head to. They have an all you can eat buffet for about $10. It's not the greatest food in the world, but I can easily fill up on their chicken vindaloo and naan.
For large parties, they will usually be willing to set up folding tables in the hotel lobby so we can seat 10-15 fairly quickly. For downtown, being able to host groups like this for lunch is rare.
Finally, for you starving students, http://restaurants.com has coupons for Gill's where you can buy a $25 meal voucher for $10-15. With a coupon code, you can even buy it for as little as $5.

I can't tell you anything about this place other than to beware the afternoon lunch coma, after visiting for lunch time goodness.
Buffet lunch, good Indian food. We get them to deliver for lunch at my office and they love us because one of our staff speaks Hindi and orders from them in Hindi.
It's Creepy inside the creepy hotel location, but good food.
I really really like the food here. I am also a big fan of having to run the strange gauntlet of the Stillwell Hotel lobby to get there. There's great, run-down old furniture to look at, cool architecture, and always-revised signs about having visitors in your room, phone use, etc (isn't this a hotel??)
Anyway, when you finally get to Gill's, get the vegatable samosas. They are excellent. I also love the sag paneer. Very helpful wait staff. I usually go for the busy lunch buffet, but dinner is fun in a hardly inhabited, spooky kind of way.
You do not need reservations. Gill's also does takeout, by the way.
This is the only Indian restaurant in the downtown area. Plus they deliver, although, it may take 45 minutes to an hour. Whenever we crave Indian food, this is where we order from. Once, during a weekday lunch, I decided to go for the buffet, however, if you want a grade A eatery, this may turn you off. So I suggest that you order a delivery first, judge them by the food and then brave the restaurant.
Do you know where the Stillwell hotel is. It's so rundown and it's the sort of "hotel" that people may rent by the week or month. The restaurant, the seats are in tatters and sort of dinghy, but man, the food. Some of the best chicken tikka masala. And I always order the onion naan, as the garlic naan, sometimes the garlic is burned. Yes, I would definitely order delivery from here, but....maybe not eat there.
If you're looking for quality Indian cuisine AND you're downtown this is the place for you. Though seemingly hard to locate in the back of the always entertaining Stillwell Hotel, once you find it, you'll be happy you did. And don't worry about the bum in the bathroom of the Stillwell, he's harmless. Just walk on through the lobby to the green and yellow Gill's sign at the far end where the decor is well placed and the chairs are the coolest. The lack of windows add to the ambience, keeping the fragrance of the fire just several feet away in.
On to the food. The naan is fantastic and in abundance with just the right amount of soft fluff and crunch. Perfect for a bit of dipping. And I've never had such juicy Chicken Tikka, every bite has zest and juice without even a hint of the dryness that many Chicken Tikka's have. I've also had their Lamb Masala, which is creamy and perfect over their cheerful basmati. Beverage wise, you can't go wrong with the Lassi and they have a several Indian beers to choose from as well. Price wise you're looking to spend about 10 a person for a meal and non alc. beverage and though I've never been able to catch the lunch buffet, its available from 1-4 for only 6 or 7 bucks. So if you're downtown working, ignore the Koo Koo Roo and CPK for once and find Gill's.
Most important of all is how Metro accessible it is. Being in the South Park area and located on Grand between 8th and 9th streets there are many choices on how to get to it:.
Transit Access: Red Line 7th/Metro, Blue Line 7th/Metro, Local 14, 37, 78, 79, 2, 16, 316, 4, Rapid 714, 720 and several others, all within a 1-4 block radius.
The restaurant is located in Stillwell hotel in Downtown. I went there on a Friday night and I was pretty apprehensive about the general area. The hotel is old, cheap, and seedy looking. Went right past the lobby and into the restauarant. The ambiance of the restaurant was okay, kind of dingy, but there was a little bit of charm.
Service was just okay. Wasn't sure if the waiters spoke English, if they did, we could barely hear them when they talked.
The food was pretty good. We had garlic naan (which was heavenly!) and samosas to start off with and it was pretty delicious. Overall, I'd recommend if you're in the area and willing to try this place out as an adventure!
Mediocre food, creepy atmosphere with poor lighting. The buffet does not include naan - you have to pay extra. Surely, there must be a better Indian buffet downtown.
This used to be one of my favorite restaurants downtown---I ate dinner here 2 or 3 nights a week. No more. The business was sold, and I'm sorry, but the quality of food and service deteriorated quickly and dramatically.
I haven't been here for probably 2 years now, so maybe I should give it another try. I just almost shudder to recall the food and service on that last visit.
But maybe it's just me. I guess I ain't got no couth, because I really don't understand the terms "seedy" and "rundown" when talking about the Stillwell, where this restaurant's located; and the neighborhood itself is in the middle of South Park's gentrification area. So the atmosphere really isn't that bad, by my judgement.
But, as I said, maybe it's just me...
I'm not really a fan of Indian cuisine, but my boyfriend loves it, so I'm forced to eat it pretty regularly... not that I'm an expert, but I do have other restaurants to compare it to. So I went here for an office lunch, and despite my not wanting to go, the food was actually better than expected! They have a buffet at lunch, and we got there semi-early for the lunch crowd, so they were very accommodating for a party of 8. It definitely got busy as the lunch hour went on though, which I found somewhat surprising. However, one of the girls I was with said it's always packed at lunch. The price was reasonable, especially if you filled your plate a few times. Strange location in the back lobby of the Stillwell Hotel. I always have strange experiences when I eat in the Stillwell's restaurants, but for some reason we keep going back!
Despite all the gentrification, it's still very difficult to find good vegan food in downtown LA. Gill's is one of the few places I can count on always being open, until of course the Stillwell gets converted into lofts.
Gill's might be a bit difficult to find at first because it's located inside the Stillwell Hotel. There's nothing seedy about the hotel and if low-income housing bothers you, well frack off.
Everything I've had at Gill's has always been great. Service is good. And I really like that this is a family-run operation. Their kids hang out and even help out. They do have a television screen, which can often be discrating, but this is mostly my fault because I love Indian music videos! Although there are plenty of tables, I always choose to sit in one of the booths with a tall Himalayan Blue Lager.
The only thing that bothers me about this restaurant is that it's always so empty. I usually only find one or two other couples dining in. Perhaps it's because most of their clientele is still downtown business people and I always come by for dinner.
Gill's by no means serves up exceptional Indian food but if you are looking for something different for lunch I recommend you give their lunch buffet a try. Be forewarned, as with most Indian restaurants the ambiance is negligible and the service is efficient with minimal interaction (a grunt here, a shake of the head there). The vegetarian options are always good, the naan soft and tender, and if they have sweet rice fight the temptation to overindulge (it is damn tasty). Don't let the decor of the Stillwell Hotel scare you away, give Gill's a try - there are far worse options in downtown Los Angeles.
As many losers that have no real life bad mouthed this place, i 100% support family owned businesses, they must work for wal mart. I love their tikki masala and their samosas. great atmosphere and a very professional young man is always at the cash register and waiting tables for the family. Over all. great food, and friendly service
I've come to the conclusion, after multiple meals here, that this is one of the worst Indian restaurants I've ever eaten at. At best it is average, at worst it is putrid.
I went to the lunch buffet with a friend of mine. It's a small restaurant inside the Stillwell Hotel, so first you have to park in the right parking lot. Then you have to walk into the entrance and all the way down. Now, I love meat. Lots of it. Beef, chicken, lamb, etc. However, when we went, 2 out of the 8 or 10 buffet entrees were meat, and one was tandoori chicken. For those who don't know, tandoori chicken is made by marinating the chicken in some crazy sauce and plopping it on the grill. I did it all the time as a kid with my mom. So, if you like a lot of vegetarian items (at least 75%) in your buffet, then you came to the right place. The price is good too, especially for downtown LA. However if you like meat like me, then it's not going to be a great experience for you.
Also, the service was irreparably slow, as to the fact that basically one guy was working the restaurant floor. I had to tell him to get me water twice, and they flubbed on the utensils. Plus, they take a long time to bring out the naan for your table, which I wouldn't mind if I didn't know that you should be continuously making naan if you are going to put it on anyone's table.
So, it gets 2 stars, for the service and the lack of meats. They should make more meat entrees! Where is my lamb vindaloo, my chicken tikka, my chicken curry, etc. etc.? Not here in their lunch buffet, that's for sure.
I love this place, it has some of the BEST Indian Food I have ever eaten. Their buffet is a bit slow and hectic but whatever, it's cheap so I don't care. The atmosphere is kind of strange, but I like it. It's better than douchebag hipsters at the Electric Lotus, that's for sure. Strange mix of people and always something interesting.
I will avoid the urge to be loquacious on my first review, so here goes: go here for the garlic naan bread and stay for the samosas. They are both amazing. Previous notes about the hotel (think Jake's YMCA digs in Blues Brothers) are justified. The walk through the lobby will put hair on your chest if the naan doesn't.
