Gilbert's central trail system offers 135 miles of trails for walking, running, biking, and horseback riding. There are 40 mi. of equestrian trails, 54 miles of marked bike trails, and the rest are unmarked multi-use trails. Trails generally follow along the canals, but there are also several miles of non-canal trails fllowing utility corridors and washes. The "master plan" is that the trail system will encourage pedestrians, that children would be able to safely bicycle to and from parks and adults could buy groceries or visit friends without driving. But that vision is still a ways into the future. Meanwhile, use the trails to get out and enjoy the famous Arizona sunshine.
