Jumbo slice with a free pop for $4.89. What a deal! They were nice enough to cut the slice for me so that I had one at night and the next for lunch the following day.
Delicious, fold up NYC style pizza. I've only ever had the sausage and have always been content with it. Give it a try! -

This place is like a bad relationship. It may treat you like crap but you keep going back. Why? Because it always keeps you guessing. they may be rude on the phone or not, they may be rude in person when you pick it up or not, you maybe be waiting a while in the infernally hot yellowing restaurant or not...the pizza may be good or not...but like an unhealthy relationship you keep going back because when it's good, it's realllllly good.
We (my husband and I) have tried to leave Gigio's soooo many times but there's just not a better alternative for a thin crust, NY style pizza.3 Previous Reviews: Show all »

The pizza was nasty. I didn't like it. I don't know what else to say. I gave it 2 stars instead of 1 because it got to me fast at like 3am. I wouldn't order from them again.
Wait, that's not fair. I should list a valid reason.
The cheese. The problem was the cheese. -

This is one of those times where I wish I could give 3.5 stars. I have to be honest this place is just cheap greasy pizza by the slice. But its REALLY GOOD cheap greasy pizza also. I came here a few times when I was in the mood for that as it reminded me of Giovanni's Pizza from my small home town that I ate when I was in middle school. Anytime that you only have a couple of bucks for lunch drop by for a slice and a soda, and look for a nickel and a penny on your walk here as I think the tax takes it a little over.

i really like this place... Well as much as you possibly can.
I'm always amused by the phone service. it's like talking to an unmedicated bi-polar person. Some times they are sweet and friendly other times they are too busy screaming and swearing to actually take your order.
The pizza it self is probably the best NY style pizza you can find on the Northside and 90% of the time it is spot on. The other 10% it's burnt, cold and plastic. Still when it is good it's great. -

This place is great, my childhood pizzeria wouldnt replace it for any other. Its not your typical luxurious place but its places like these that really give chicago the whole uptown theme. It may be a bit greasy but its definetly worth break your new years resolution. But thats me. Dont take my word for it, try it out.

This is our go-to pizza joint. Its another Uptown gem. The pizza is very good, fast, and the staff is remarkably personable (and willing to chat if you go in).
The only other thing I have to say is .... cheese fries ..... you must get them. Something about soft fried fries with "nacho" cheese sauce always hits the spot. -

For east coast pizza in Chicago, this place is solid. I really dig it, floppy foldable slices with slightly greasy gooey cheese. It is VERY affordable as well. Good chewy dough with a snap in the crust, and the sauce compliments well. Limited on toppings, but east coast pizza really is rather utilitarian; the only toppings any place must offer are pepperoni, sausage, peppers, onions, and mushrooms, and that's exactly what they have . To be sure, this joint looks like the outside of a methadone clinic, so it'll be quite "an adventure" for those who live in the burbs (or yuppie areas like Lincoln Park). But don't worry, it's in a well populated area so there's no danger, even if you happen to stop by after midnight. That being said, if you live close, you'll probably want to take out, though if you live far eat there as fresh pizza really is best. All in all: solid.

Their, uh, "dining room" is nowhere that you would want to have a first date...or even a monthly check-in with your parole officer. However, the pizza is fantastic and that's all that matters.
This seems more dead-on New York style than their Evanston cousin, which I enjoyed regularly throughout the late 90s and early 00s, and more sporadically since. This Gigio's serves you a greasy, cheesy slice with a nice, slight crisp on the outside of the crust from the second trip through the oven. Sprinkle a little oregano, fold, and enjoy your bliss.Listed in: Pizza by the Slice

I love New York style pizza, so when I saw this place on Chicago's Best, I had to go!
I finally got my boyfriend to bring me all the way from Aurora to the northside of Chicago for this treat. Pulling up, the place looks like a dump (but I like dumps!) & not in the best part of the city (but, hey, I'm from Aurora so no need for snobbery..!). We get inside and order when a terrible thunderstorm hits. Just my luck, travel all the way to the northside from sunny Aurora, just to end up in a hailstorm w/ funnel clouds along the Lakefront....hmmm.
After we get our pizza, we decided to skip the tiny, dirty booths and head to a park along Lakeshore Drive to watch the storm roll in. My bf had sausage and pepperoni and I had plain cheese. It was good, but a little too cheesy for NY style.
I would come here again...but maybe to the one in Des Plaines instead. The best part was eating our pizza in our car and watching the lightning rattle the Lakefront. The worst part- the drive.
Oh well, maybe if we lived in the neighborhood...but thanks anyway Gigio's! :) -

Where else in Chicago can you get a pizza that is actually sliced? This is our favorite go-to pizza place. Our neighbor introduced us to them by sharing they had them on speed dial for many years!
I'm a yankee from way back and this is the closest to NY style I've found. We always order delivery or pick it up. The phone experience is right out of NY so don't expect much, it's part of the total experience! -

I love NY style pizza and so far, this is the only place I can think of in Chicago. The authenticity of the joint is great. Including people on crack outside and the dumpy looking placenear the "L" but I love it! No frill, no thrills just Damm good NY style pizza that you can fold! Last time I was there had to be around 10 years ago and it still looks like the old joint! Slice for under 3 bucks is great!
I recommend you pick up and go! not really a plce to stay and eat unless you want to be watching your car every 5 seconds.

The Pros:
Floppy new york style pizza
Hot and gooey
Not too greasy
Really fast delivery
Inexpensive
The Cons:
On the bland side
Crust has some strange after taste that I did not enjoy.
They put the pepperoni UNDER the cheese. ( If you put the pepperoni on TOP of the cheese, then it has a chance to crisp up and taste divine!)
I think that everyone has their own taste buds and I think that there are a lot of people who would really enjoy their pizza -
Review from Kathy P.
I am very obsessed with this place.
Even before tasting my slice of pizza, I immediately smelled the authenticity that this is indeed, NY style pizza. Coming from NYC, I obviously love NY style but it's hard finding good ones here in Chicago. The pizza took me back to my childhood when I would enjoy simple greasy slices of deliciousness. The slice was instantly gobbled down.
An hour later (after we already went home), we came back and this time, didn't make the mistake of getting pizza by the slice but ordered the 14" pie for $8. And for just only $8, it's indeed cheap eats.
One thing to note, the pizza by the slice was tastier than the pie...The crust on the slice was thinner and just tasted better so that was a bit odd. The pie was still good but just not like the slice so I'm hoping that next time, my pie will be just like the slice. -

Oh Gigio's...
I tried to give you another chance, figured I was way harsh and you didn't deserve the previous review but alas, you're just not that yummy.
Ordered a large, sausage and spinach pizza. It looked soooo delicious, it looked gorgeous with it's dripping cheese, and golden brown crust from the oven but yeah... as bland as a heart healthy diet. No flavor! No seasonings! What gives? I don't like a lot of salt in my meals but damn, you need help developing a new recipe.
You're like a Michael Bay movie w/out the explosions... all pretty and exciting to look at but no substance, bland, and full of disappointment.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Whenever I meet someone in Chicago I inevitably end up asking them their favorite pizza in the city. When I had someone mention Gigio's as their top choice I was suspect. However, being a pizza lover with an everyday pizza craving, I decided to try them.
OH.MY.GOD.
Best pizza of my life. Obviously, making a statement that definitive, and that catastrophic, is much like deciding to have children, or taking your company public, or switching religions....you get the idea.....saying "it's the best" is monumental.
But this pizza IS THE BEST. Characterized by sweet cheese, really thin crust on the bottom and then doughy, thicker crust on the sides, with only a minimal amount of sauce, it's like God created this dough with his own hands.
God, do you live in Uptown?
If you love pizza, if you are looking for a new favorite place, or if you are hoping to prove me wrong, please try Gigio's. Say hi to God for me! -

Let's get this out of the way. The pizza is good.
OK. NEVER ORDER FROM GIGIO'S. THEY ARE UNRELIABLE AND REGARDLESS OF WHETHER A PIZZA IS TASTY, IF IT NEVER SHOWS UP THAT DOESN'T MATTER.
Ordered a pizza at 6:30. Told it would take :45.
Called at 7:30 and they apologized and said it was on the way.
Called at 7:50 and after some phone shuffling and pointed questions was told that it despite what they had said, it had not in fact left when I originally called (an hour after ordering).
I'm happy they were unexpectedly busy on a Tuesday night. It doesn't excuse leaving me or my family (including 6- and 7-year olds) waiting twice as long as promised or asking me what would make it right and then saying no. Suck it up. Give us the pizza gratis (after an hour and a half and two phone calls) and keep a customer happy.
THEY ARE LIARS WHO DON't PARTICULARLY CARE ABOUT THEIR CUSTOMERS. MY ADVICE, WHICH I WILL LOUDLY COMMUNICATE FROM NOW ON. DO NOT ORDER FROM GIGIO'S. -

This place is like straight out a NYC's skid row. Located off the Wilson Stop in a pretty grimmy part of uptown, you can not get as classic to the real city experience then this place. The place is a whole in the wall, very grundgy, but super cool. And the best thing about it is are the characters that work there, or are eating there. The dialouge coming out the place is ripe for a torentino movie or something.
So we went there to pick up a pizza, and had to wait, and in 5 minutes there, we basically had a plot to a movie!
The people working there were hilarious. You have the main manager who is this mildy retarded 500 pound Chicagoan dude, who is just bithching out his little old Italian delivery guy when we got in the door, he was starting to get bothered by his constant peskering, "when is the pizza goanna be ready." In his Italian style, he starting yelling at this guy, he was like "GO take a walk, a jog, get out of my face., go take a walk around the counter.!" totally making a scene, for no reason, just to show that he was the boss.
They also had this quasi-homeless guy working there, helping take out garbage and stuff. This guy was wearing battle fatigues and looked like he climbed out of the trash bin few hours prior. He had a flashlight tucked into the back of his pants. and was going around to the garbages, taking them out putting his whole leg in the garbage to compress it for more space. He did this about 3-4 times to the two garbages inside the place (it was so damn weird and pointless), while we were there, and we were scratching our heads. These two friends sitting accross from us were like "Look at this motha-fu*ka , hey, you need to come over here and put your foot in this mothafuc*kas ass, pointing to his friend, the both of them were laughing. as were we. What was funny, was the guy had a flashlight tucked in by his belt. Like he was somekid of superhero or something.
So in this short 5 minutes we were there, there was so much happening, they were pretty busy.
We got the pizza, and it was delcious! and the experience of going there was so much fun. Oh yeah i forgot about the pizza! It was great! no complaints, best NYC pizza in Chi -

I ordered a medium sausage and cheese pizza at the rave recommendation of friends.
The good: the pizza was REALLY good and the portions were big (seemed more like a large).
The bad: ordering/delivery. The girl who answered the phone was rude and seemed really annoyed that we were interrupting her day. We were told it would take an hour (which seems like a long time to wait for pizza, but we weren't in a hurry). It arrived after 75 minutes. The delivery man was not apologetic, but was, like the order taker, rude. As would be expected from exceedingly slow delivery, the pizza was cold.
I definitely want to try this again, as I've heard only good things. Next time I will try the pick up special ($8 for medium two topping!) and avoid the terrible service. -

The slice I recieved dripped into a pile of slop. The sweat dripping off the overweight slob working the register alone will prevent me from ever walking into that dump again.! Great place for a slice if you just got out of the penitentiary..!

Not bad for thin crust east coast style pizza. Especially for the price. I'll walk over here or have them deliver and when it's hot, it's pretty good. Can't beat a large pizza for 8 bucks!
Great for hangovers, or when you're drunk, but never good reheated.
I recommend going in and eating there just to experience the melting pot of crackwhores, yuppies, homeless and crazies. What a show! -

Great thin crust slice- not as thin as NY caaaan be, but very good non the less! Less than desirable area so I would recommend going during daytime hours! We'll be back- great end of bike ride stop.

This place is something else. The characters eating and such at this place are something else too. Worth checking out just for that. It may not be the cleanest or most attractive or appealing place, but really I don't care about all that at a pizza joint.
The pizza is not shabby at all. Greasy as all hell and it'll drip down your forearms like burger juice if you let it. I still think there's gotta be better NY style slices in Chicago and I'll keep looking. For Chicago, this place isn't bad if you want a thin style pizza, but in NY I fear Gigio's would succumb to the competition. -

Great New York style pizza. Sausage only in my opinion , cheese is ok it just loses some flavor. The meatball sandwiches are a great deal as well .
Only problem I have with the place is that in summer its like sauna inside. Better to order your food ahead of time then wait inside during the summer months .
Not your sit-down and eat kinda of pizza place . Carryout or delivery only . Delivery is pretty fast if you live close by . Must give it a try , you are missing out on some good food; especially the pizza . -

Damnit. All those years wasting away in Uptown and somehow I never stumbled into this spot. Maybe the constant stream of vagrants and bums kept me out, but man, I should have know. Probably my new favorit 'Za spot in Chicago right now.
The hand tossed and homemade crust is really what made it for me. Don't let the greasy pizzeria facade fool you. This is legit pie. They say it's NY style, but I still thought it had more of a Neapolitan crust with American ingredients. The sausage was really good and obviously homemade. Oh and the price was right....medium pizza's are $8. A damn good deal. I'll be back very soon. -

I love Gigio's. Great NY style pizza, great prices, I like the folks that work there. But the place is a hole in the wall and you probably don't want to eat in during the summer.

Yes Yes Yes! I am a Jersey girl, and ever since I moved to Chicago in 2005, I had yet to find a pizza place that truly tasted authentic to the NY/NJ style. I just ordered delivery from them, and from the second that I looked at the pizza and smelled the aroma, I knew it was going to be good. I have to say that this place hits the nail on the head, and it will be my go-to for delivery from now on. It was a double-bonus that the medium pizzas happened to be on special, so the pizza + tax + delivery was only $11.99!! Way to go, Gigio's!

Solid NY style thin crust pizza. This is one of my go-to joints when I need delivery, and I have tried many. As noted by others, this isn't really a dine-in destination, but what it does, it does well.

Sleazy pizza at it's best. I don't order for delivery, other wise I'd be waiting for a long a$$ time, I just order for pick up.
I wouldn't even call it "THIN CRUST". Just the best sleazy pizza you'll ever have.
P.S. if you go at the right time, when closing, you can walk away with two pizza's for the price of slice. Unless, I was just lucky enough and drunk enough for them to make me leave.
Nonetheless, the big man is awesome and once you get to know him and he tends to be a playboy. The ladies, in the hairnets, are actually sweet hearts. I do frequent there that much and about three coupons away from getting a free large pizza (gotta collect 20). -

This place is my guilty pleasure.... The pizza is excellent but the place is kinda crappy, especially in the summer, they never have air conditioning.
The pizza is super thin, huge slices and cheap. The place it self looks kinda dingy and unkept ...... Pizza still overrules every time ...... -

I will agree with several others here and say that you should definitely opt for delivery here. The pizza is good and the prices are undeniably excellent, but the area is undeniably awful.
My boyfriend and I decided to take a walk up and grap a pizza around 5:30 one evening, by no means late in the day--it was still plenty sunny out.
As we walk out of the place, pizza in hand, I see a woman in her car parked right outside Gigio's pull her belt off and proceed to beat her child in the backseat of the car with it. I literally thought I was going to throw up. Does this have anything to do with the quality of Gigio's pizza? No. But it definitely had everything to do with my Gigio's experience (and from what I can tell, I am far from the first person that has encountered sketchy people here).
So save yourself the potential of a completely awful encounter with some of the sketchballs in this neighborhood and just order delivery! -

I ordered. I waited. It arrived hot. I ate almost the entire thing. My life was complete.
Ok, so it was Sunday night and of course I hate to grocery shop (or cook, but that is another story), and again I was perplexed on what to order. I searched Yelp (of course, duh) and found Gigio's. Rave reviews. Pizza. Perfect.
I put in my little order, and it arrived about 45 minutes later. (under the quoted time, apparently lots of peeps crave pizza on boring Sunday nights).
And I opened the box to a beautiful pie. A Gigio's special topped with mushrooms, sliced tomatoes, sausage and green peppers. Lovely. Just lovely...just what I needed to cap off the weekend and serve as my final bout of calorie-laden, carb-infested food. Definitely could've used a bit more cheese (of course, this is true even when a pizza is PILED with cheese, so hey), and a little more sauce (not much on there), but overall a grade A pizza pie that made me smile.
The icing on this already stellar cake. A huge, cold bottle of Diet Rite Zero. The evening: a complete and utter success.
Highly recommended.Listed in: Obligatory Pizza List

Review from Megan G.
I have a shocking, shameful confession. Though I've lived Chicagoland my entire life, the best pizza I've ever had has been in Boston and Staten Island. Oh, I tried to deny it, but I knew the truth in my heart: I love East Coast style pizza. So after reading the reviews of Gigio's saying that this was the best thin crust pizza people had had outside of New York I gleefully placed an order. People, this isn't even the best thin crust pizza I've had in Chicago.
On this plus side, it's pretty reasonably priced and arrived well under the stated 45 minute delivery time. And it's not bad, it's just by no means great. There's something off in the spices that I can't put my finger on, but I don't like it. It's also super cheesy and greasy, yet somehow still fairly bland and flavorless.
Not impressed. My quest for New York style pizza in Chicago continues. But my order did come with a free liter of RC. I didn't even realize they still made RC. -

Disclaimer: I have never been inside!
My date bought pizza from here (takeout). And it was goooooooooood.
For a minute (and just a minute) I was at a storefront pizzaria in Manhattan, sunny early summer... sigh... Then he told me where he got it.
I choked, coughed, and maybe there was an unladylike gag or two...
I mean, I am adventurous, I like to eat, but Uptown can be scary. Wha? That's why you got takeout? Because you were afraid of getting shot? Oh, You were afraid I was going to get shot. Makes logical, perfect sense. I too want mozzarella with no bullet casings. My shoes only give me so many super-powers- Matrix-ing away from a bullet? Nope. Not even for pizza.
So Yelpsters, Don't go: Call in, have it delivered and watch a movie with your date- good pizza- especially if you want a break from the sodden mess they call Chicago deep-dish, right?Listed in: C'mon... Take me out!, Purgatory... I mean, DATING...

If i were possible to give some place infinity stars Gigio's would get them from me.
Gigio's is as close to crack (and possibly crack heads) as this nice girl from the UP can get. I've been going here for about 6 years and have never had a bad experience....I think that's saying a lot considering the looks of the place- Its dirty, dingy, in a shitty neighborhood, and usually full of "undesirables" but i'm telling you- ITS TOTALLY WORTH IT
everything there is good- from a slice, to the mozzarella sticks (with the weirdest dipping sauce ever...but it works)
My old roomie amy and I used to get spinach, garlic, and pineapple and we did it with out any judgments for our admittedly odd taste. (she also loves gigio's- in fact when I texted her last tuesday to tell her I was there with my friend jason she called me a dirty whore...the nerve!)
to sum up- just go there - especially if you are a new yorker who misses real pizza. It might not be certified organic or have a crappy brewery attached (you know who you are!!) - its just good pizza...the way it should be. -

I have not been here for about 25 years. My parents use to bring me here a lot when I was a kid. I when back the place looks and smells the same. I LOVE IT. The pizza looks good taste good too. I must say's it was greasy but the fact that was so thin that made so good. They gave me a good size pizza for about $3.50 but the bad part you need to at least have 5 bucks to charge before you can put it credit card. I'm more than willing to go back.

Being from St. Louis, I'm fond of a thin slice of pizza. That doesn't mean I don't enjoy a good deep dish, but thin is what I grew up eating and frankly, it's hard to find a good thin slice in this wonderful town.
Thank GOD I work near this place, because I'm certain they wouldn't deliver to the Ukrainian Village. My co-workers and boss get Gigio's every once in awhile and I damn near jump up and down when I see it. It's big, sloppy pizza and it's delicious. I can't figure out WHY it's so great, though. Finally! I don't have to go to Santullo's and deal with less-than-enthused stoned hipster bike-riding employees!
