Enter: the most pointless review on the planet, yet one of the most meaningful to Aimee K.

I've always wanted to review the giant Amoco sign but never really had a reason because I didn't rely on it, but after many years of wishing and hoping, it's actually the closest gas station to my apartment! How lucky a girl am I?!

It's been there for me a few times already -- let me reference two days ago when I started my car and saw that I was three miles to empty. Guess what WASN'T more than three miles away? The giant Amoco sign. Guess who also has coffee, cappuccinos, and hot chocolate (all of which I'll probably never drink but it's charming nonetheless?) The gas station underneath the giant Amoco sign. Guess who has plenty of pumps and not too many assholes using them? THE GIANT AMOCO SIGN.

If everything else in my life goes wrong for some reason, at least I can say I live by the coolest gas station on the planet. It's a good life.

I nearly destroyed my uninsured rental car when I saw this sign and immediately pulled over to take a photograph.

I had no idea, but I know that ST LOUIS is the place for old signs, advertising, etc... I bet BP hates/loves this.

This is truly a classic piece of kitschy americana.  I love it

I grew up in a small town 45 minutes away from Saint Louis City. I remember passing the sign as a child and thinking "Here we are. We're in the city!" I knew I wanted to move to Saint Louis as soon as I was old enough and as a young child that sign was the landmark telling me I had arrived.

It's silly and overly sentimental but I would hate to see the sign taken down because it was a symbol of my hope of getting out of a crappy small town when I was young. I do think it is funny that a gasoline advertisement is meaningful to a non-driver though...

"Giant Amoco Sign," after Dan Quayle.
"The Giant Amoco sign has always been a very large landmark in St. Louis. It is in St. Louis. It is part of a gas station that is an island that is right here."
Okay, so my review isn't exactly like former Vice-president Dan Quayle's infamous Hawaii sound byte.  But the sign does preside over a little concrete island bounded by Skinker, Clayton Rd., and Clayton Ave. It's easiest to enter that little concrete island if you're driving east. And it's not Amoco gasoline you'll find there. But the price is pretty good.

For as long as I've lived in Dogtown, whenever people from St. Charles, St. Peters, or any other homogeneous cookie-cutter neighboring region ask me where I live, the Giant Amoco Sign has allowed me to convey it to them.

Even after becoming a BP years ago, this great beacon of red, white and blue still stands tall and proud; lit up like a giant metal Christmas tree bordering the city-county skies.  Ironic how even BP was wise enough not to dare deface a local symbol.. Must be a land-lock exception..?

Thank you, great Giant Amoco Sign for ensuring my highway exit is never missed, and for allowing the Spirit of St. Louis (city) to live on through you.  And thank you for always being a total gas, keeping us all pumped and never, ever leaving us fuming.

Boston may have their giant light up Citgo sign in Kenmore Square, but I say we do it one better here with our obnoxiously huge Amoco sign.  Why do I say that, you ask?  Because unlike Boston, ours has survived even a corporate name change.  Oh, and ours is bigger.

How many nights has your massive gleaming facade helped to guide me home (or at least let me know where I was)???  For this, ginormous sign, I give you five stars.

Giant Amoco Sign is quite the neighborhood landmark.  I've heard it's the largest of its kind in the world.  Definitely visisble from a mile down the interstate, it helped out of towners not miss my exit when I lived in U. City.

G.A.S. became 300% more hilarious when the filling station below stopped being an Amoco.  Not only is the name now wrong, but the Amoco red white and blue majorly clash with BP yellow and green.

My roommate and I always said we were going to steal this sign and put it in our apartment. Yes, it's too big for any apartment I've ever had, but still.

Al runs a nice mechanic shop below the sign, by the way.

Not only is the giant sign cool and historic, but Stevenson's auto mechanics is a trustworthy and reliable place to get your car serviced.  Unfortunately, they now know me by name there...

Only pure greatness such as this can overcome corporate mergers.  They should down trees to ensure its visibility.
