Super fun cheese-fest!
I have spent the past two weeks being a tourist in my hometown and tonight we capped it off with a Ghosts and Gravestones tour. We had no idea what to expect and some in our party were... mortified, so be prepared.
This isn't a Spooky World type of tour... this is more like a B horror movie tour. The tour guides (Gravediggers!) are decked out in awesome costumery and have hilariously spooky stories surrounding their untimely demises. Get ready for cheap thrills - lots of getting snuck up on - good laughs, and to act like a fool. Seriously, if you don't want to be a goofball, get a map of Boston's haunted places and walk around yourself.
If you DO want to be a goofball, get ready for a great time. The tour guides will regale you with great stories of famous Boston ghosts, take you walking through the North End and the Common, and have you screaming at passersby off of the trolley. But, like any interactive tour, the group makes it - so bring your craziest friends.
We went on a 9:00 p.m. tour which was great for adults - it was already dark out, only other adults on the tour - but the tour is DEFINITELY kid-friendly. Just scary enough with enough jokes to keep the kiddos from having nightmares.
If you're looking for something out of the ordinary to do in Boston, this is it.
Special thanks to Anthraxicon for "hanging" me in the Boston Common. Definitely the weirdest and most hilarious thing to ever happen to me in the Common, and that's saying something! -

I love our tourguide Mercy and her little friend Dolly! I lived in Boston for 4 years, but never bothered to try a tour until I went for a visit to my beloved Boston with my fiance` Ryan last week, and we had a blast!!! When you go on these tours, make sure that you are willing to participate and get into the scenario and stories. You can't be a Debbie Downer like some of my tourmates who were too self-conscious to do anything, and look like a bunch of asses with sticks up THEIR asses. These tours are supposed to be fun, and you definitely have to believe in the "magic" of ghosts, and hauntings, and the historical facts of Boston in the first place. If you don't, go stare out at Boston Harbor all night with your fried dough and lemonade.
Mercy's story was of her dying in a fire, and she plays with her creepy toys, which I thought was super entertaining before the tour began. We were required 15 minutes early to be there, and now we understood why! She would creep about the trolley scaring us, and keeping us on our toes! She was definitely "insane", especially since she introduced herself with a severed hand for us to shake, and giving us imaginary boogers she picked out of this tiny shrunken head. (Relax, it was all fake!) She also told us of stories that I never heard before, including the Lanier couple, in which she had chosen myself and Ryan to actively participate the reenactment (FUN!) while we rode around historic Boston, stopping at significant areas. We also took pictures of the graveyards, which by the way, these tours have special access to after hours. You may just see something, and you can send your photos in on their website! Not gonna give away too many stories, so you all can get the chance to hear them for yourself. Just rememnber...give in to the Fear, or you will never have the experience you truly want to get out of this. -

Wednesday night 8pm tour. We were taught our lesson by Miss Agatha.
If you like you cheese bloody and haunted, this is the tour for you.
We saw most of the sights they took us to in the day time, but it was cool to hear the haunted history behind them and see them under the light of the moon. The other tour guide was Lily...she and Miss Agatha tell some stories together. They also introduced us to another ghoul in a graveyard, who told us a story of his own.
I was highly disappointed in the audience participation portions, the people they picked had no sense of humor and acted "dead". An old man who was picked was the best of them all. Bravo to him!
Fun time, heard some good ghost stories, enjoyed the trolley ride through the city.
TIPS: Be prepared to walk, keep an open mind (or have a drink before you go), be sure to check in at the booth before your tour, there were 2 different trolleys and your booked for a specific one. Having a good seat on the trolley isn't that important, the right side (next to the side walk) is better, but they only point out a few things from the trolley. -

I had such a fabulous time on this tour. I wasn't expecting much being from California and knowing the haunted attraction scene so well. But this IS how it should be done. Hollywood take note! You need one of these, with wonderful actors like these.
They took us into historic Boston cemeteries at night! What a blast! Told us wonderful stories about some of the people buried there and also told us stories while on the trolley of haunted Boston, ghosts and famous Boston serial killers. Constance was our tour guide and not only was she knowledgeable, enthusiastic and passionate about the stories, she was absolutely gorgeous and adorable. I suggest you ask for her on your tour. Seamus waiting to give his part of the tour at the old Granary Cemetery was a RIOT! Love this tour and when I get back to Boston I plan to take it AGAIN! -

My husband and I went on this tour and were pretty disappointed. The tour guide was high energy - which is great - but it was a bit much by the end of the tour. There were really no scary stories which was disappointing and it was more of a theatrical performance than a ghost tour. Perhaps they should market themselves as such. We were looking for a fright and what we got was a silly trolley ride. Not scary, certainly not worth the money.

I was quite disappointed in this ghost tour, especially after reading so many rave reviews. I knew going into the tour that it was run by actors in full costume, complete with fake blood. Although this made me wary, I figured that the tour itself must be fabulous for so many people to overcome this fact and provide great feedback.
Unfortunately, my gut reaction was right. It wasn't really the actors that were the problem. They all played their parts well and kudos to them for staying in character. I think I've just become a ghost tour snob after going on so many. This tour lacked the engaging stories that most ghost tours possess. You spend about half the time on a trolley, where stories may be told as you quickly pass by the building where it occurred. However, many stories lacked an "anchor point" and seem like they could have been a story about Anywhere, USA.
Oh yeah - one slight annoyance is that if you book your tickets online, you still have to call in to make a reservation for the time you would like. -

Just took the Friday 9pm tour and love it!
Our tour guide, the grave digger was hilarious. Very impressed by his action skills and historical knowledge. Those little kids in the same trolley seemed to be having lots of fun in this tour as well. Some other attributes to this fun filled tour include the participation of the audience and the comfortable breezy summer night of late August. -

Totally cheese-fest, but fun.
If you make reservations, definitely go early anyway to get a prime seat on the trolley. The tour guides are clothed in period costume (what period you may ask? Depends on the tour guide) and really goof it up for the kids, but they are knowledgeable.
The trolley portion is interesting - I really was interested in learning more about some items, but we were given a good overview.
The cemetary walk portions were fun and interesting. I wish I would have gone back during the day to see more as it's a bit difficult to walk through a pitch black cemetary at night.
This tour is quite pricey - though some of the money goes to keeping up the cemetary. I think it could have been a bit less expensive - though a good tour. -

Went for my Bday after a family dinner as a fun different thing to do. Initially I was dead set against it as it seemed to be a ridiculous touristy waste of time.. I was right but It was actually a lot of fun, partially because we stocked up on booze at the 7-11 and they were cool with it. The chick tour guide was cheesy and funny. In the second part of the tour, a second guide some bitter out of work actor type dude took over. He rubbed me the wrong way - He choose me to act out a scene of some famous Boston murder - (I was somewhat inebriated by then) and he made fun of me the entire time. I laughed along with him but I could tell his bitterness came from some point of deep contempt- not the lighthearted good humor it should have been. Overall it was worth doing as something fun and different as long as you are with a good group.

Had a blast on out tour last night!! Even though it was the start of the October blizzard it was still fun. Our tour guide was Franklin and he was a trip. He was able to make everyone laugh and was very knoweldgeable You do have to interact to make the tour even better. This is a must do tour for anyone that goes to Boston.

So I came here with a foreigner who basically doesnt speak much English. I had no idea what to expect. Basically we had a really funny guy (Anthrax) who told us a bunch about Boston's ghost history. His is so adept at story telling that some of these tales were quite embelleshed. He even asked my friend at one point to hold the latern and take the group down the hill- my poor friend looked around like "oh damn, whats going on??" At any rate, we both loved the whole experience. Its worth the money and the time.
I'm a local and when I tell other locals that I did this and it was awesome, they laugh in my face! Trust me, it beats another night at the bar. They really a nice job and everyone has a fun time! -

Pre-ordered tickets, very easy transaction over the phone, my name was ready at the check-in when I got there. Very smooth transaction wise. To me the website seemed to make it seem as though it was going to be much more intense than it was. Unless you have a very active imagination and are scared easily it's comparable to Plymouth Plantation in the dark.
The stories overall are interesting, very historical and well told, there is some fun to be had with yelling off the trolley and joking with the actors. Be warned it is alot of walking in the dark, so older people who are unsteady on their feet should be careful. If I was a tourist in Boston this would be a great night out. -

My best friend is from Syracuse and since she went to school out here and well we have done all the touristy stuff we found a coupon for this tour and decided why not. We went on the latest tour they offer at night ( around 10 PM) and it was not really scary at all but it was tons of fun.
We went to burial grounds in the North end, beacon hill as well as drove all around downtown. The stories where interesting and the tour guides where entertaining.
It lasted abut 90 minutes and we both had fun. The only reason I give 3 stars is the price is a little steep for what you get. -

My boyfriend called to reserve spots for us ahead of time for this tour. Later on that day, some lady called him back:
A: [normal lady voice] Is Chad there please?
B: This is he.
A: [lady doing creepy Vincent Price voice] This is Carrrrrrrrrrrrrmen. Calling you from the Ghost and Gravestonesssssssssssss. Just calling to see if you'd be on the tour toniiiiiiiiiiiight. *sinister laugh*
I don't know why, but that strikes me as really ridiculously retardedly funny. Like, if I answered the phone would she be like...
A: Tell him, Carrrrrrrrrrrmen called.
B: Can you spell that?
A: C-A-RRRRRRRRRRRRRRR-M-E-N.
B: I'm sorry, you're breaking up. What?
A: I'll callllllllllllllllll some other tiiiiiiiiime. *sinister laugh fading into a wolf howl and maybe a clock striking midnight or something*
So our tour starts and we have this clown as our tour guide. He's dressed up as some sort of English/pirate/town drunkard/D&D cape-wearing guy and I swear I see an Urban Outfitters tag on his billowy poet blouse. Can't really figure it out.
The right side of the trolley starts yelling about how they're from Jersey, something about drinking whiskey, and some friend of theirs that's also on the tour named Henry. In fact, during the ENTIRE tour, this group loudly only talks about Jersey, whiskey, and some friend of theirs that's also on the tour named Henry. Ugh.
Meanwhile, Urban Outfitters billowy poet shirt guy is asking for my name because he's trying to make me yell "boo!" at people innocently walking down the street. "Nah.. that's okay," I say. I feel like a spoil sport, but I'm like old and stuff and I don't feel like yelling at people I don't know that much.
The tour is sort of interesting, but I felt like our aforementioned passengers detracted from us enjoying this tour to its fullest. I felt like the information given to us was scattered and our tour guide was constantly trying to talk over the Jersey group or have some sort of banter with them, but I can't really knock off points for the bonehead clientele. Everyone's a freaking comedian. Our tour guide was funny and personable. He gave my BF the nickname of Camus and me the nickname of Darth Sidius. I questioned his authenticity if he knew who Darth Sidius was, but he sort of brushed that off. He seemed to have a lot of knowledge about the events in the area, but we felt he didn't give us enough detail about certain goings on--lots of stuff was merely glossed over.
By the end, I was yelling at some people walking on the street for no other reason than that they are people walking on the street. "Boo, you stupid striped-shirt wearing motherfucker!" Serves 'em right.
I did learn that Boston is a pretty fucked up place. -

2 hours FULL of Murder, Ghosts, Graveyards and Boston's most famous Legends? Bitch, sign me up.
Even if you have lived here all your life or are a transplant wanting to be enriched in a little history of the darker kind.....or maybe you are just obsessed with all things mortal.... the Ghost and Gravestones tour is well worth the $30.
If you are the type of person that is easily embarrassed and may possibly see every person you know while driving through Boston in an open ride....Wear a hat....First, you ride around Boston in the "Trolley of the Doomed"........ an old Englishmen Grave Digger in costume with full on accent, teaches you all about the darker side of Boston.
You are schooled on the Angel of Death, The Boston Strangler and some places that have proved to be haunted and damned forever by the creatures of the night. Boooowahahahahaha haaaaaaaaaa.
A nice surprise for my lazy ass was a walking tour through Cobbs and Granary burial grounds. Not only are they home to famous guys such as John Hancock and Samuel Adams, but a short visit allows the opportunity to be introduced to the significance of Tombstones from that era and the meanings behind their selected designs-I found this fascinating as a matter of fact.
Sure....anyone can hop on their computer and google the ever loving life out of "Haunted Boston" or "Boston Ghosts".... (And maybe even gain more knowledge than by going on this tour).........yet nothing beats seeing things with your own eyes............ or that feeling. That feeling of being "spooked" by the end of the night. A little jumpy. A little on edge....
You know........that feeling you get when you shut off the last light to go to bed and you run quickly to your room because you SWEAR someone is right behind you..... or maybe they could even be under your bed..... ready to grab your ankles as you jump under the covers.
Yeah....THAT kinda feeling. -

Not sure why everyone is bitching and complaining on here..But, I went with 11 people! I have a horror group that I run in Boston and the entire group every SINGLE one of them absolutely loved it!
It was fun, informative and we laughed from beginning to end! We went on the 7:00 trolley. It was a crisp and clear night so it made being in the graveyards just the perfect bit of "spookyness"!!
Our guide was really energetic and really funny! He jumped right at you and really got the trolley going. If you came to be scared to death..this isn't going to scare you to death! It was interesting to hear about the Boston Strangler and all sorts of little details of Boston along the way. These people really get into their job and do it well!
Last night I decided to take the train to this tour, only to find out the train was down! It delayed my train ride by an hour and I was late for my ghost tour! These amazing people here at Ghosts and Gravestones made sure I could meet up with the rest of my group by PERSONALLY taking me to meetup with my group. They drove me by a smaller suburban to the first stop that the trolley was at.
I was only late by 13(ahh..an unlucky number) minutes. Not only did this wonderful sweet woman drive me, but she told me all the informative little things about the North End I missed that they spoke about on the trolley tour!! Now how cool can you get come on?
They really went above and beyond their customer service! They were amazing all around! I definitely would go back. We loved every minute of it. People complaining about yelling at people in the streets..oh come on...it's all in fun...Learn to laugh a little..LIFE'S too short..GEEZ!
Thank You Ghosts And Gravestones..for an amazing night last night!! AND..for going way out of your way to get me to my group!!!!! YOU GUYS ROCK! -

This is hoakie and touristy but fun nonetheless. I dragged my Bostonian friend with me since I am from California and we don't have near the history that Boston and the East Coast has.
Around $30 each, around 1.5 hour bus and walking tour. Walking part is a half an hour, max and not that hard, but up a hill.
Your docent is a costumed gravedigger, with his oil lamp and bad teeth, and English accent, too funny. The bus was open aired and it was too fun to harass the walking and driving passerbyer with our shrieks and wails.
Warn you, walking through the two graveyards at dusk, mosquitos and spiders are out, so wear long sleeves or insect repellant, they loved me! -

Laughed the entire time.
Absolutely drop-dead hilarious. It was like going to a comedy club on wheels.
Yeah, there were some cool ghost stories. Never scary. Great for kids. Great for adults. I've been on a lot of tours in my time and there's never been a better one for me.
My recommendation: Call ahead of time and request "Father Seamus Rattigan" to be your guide.
This guy is super-talented. He'll have you laughing for the entire 90 minutes. -

The best Boston tour I've ever been on! The black hearse-like trolley complete with Halloween music is radical and the tour guides are all actors dressed in colonial gear and have ridiculous English accents. You actually learn a lot of dark history behind Boston while having a good time. The walking parts of the tour were short and sweet so don't worry, but don't wear high heal as you'll be wondering through graveyards.
I suggest going on the tour that happens close to dusk. It makes it creepier. And once the tour is over, you're right next to Faneuil Hall so you can grab a drink afterwards! -

Silly, touristy, and totally worth doing at least once. The stories were interesting, but honestly, it was a little too hokey to be scary. The tour guides were really funny. I went a few years ago and I'd likely do it again with some friends who hadn't done it before.
Afterwards we went out for pastries in the North End, which was the perfect way to complete a blustery October evening. -
Review from Ben G.
I've lived in Boston for almost my entire life and I've never been on this touristy endeavor. I wouldn't say its a must do for every Bostonian but if you enjoy the occasional cheese-fest then this is right up your alley. For the most part I agree with the other reviews, it is moving theater (something different), it is extremely cheesy (hmmm queso) and uber touristy (What do you mean, i can't parrk my carr in harrvard yarrd?).
So you board a bus over by the Marriott on Atlantic Ave and you're greeted by some people dressed up as the deceased. These ghoulish tour guides lead you on a tour of two graveyards and narrate a few amusing stories about the morbid history of Boston. It was more educational and funny than it was scary, which was fine by me. I would say this tour would be great for everyone from about 8 to a senior citizen.
I would highly advise if you're of age to grab a cocktail first or maybe three. I went to the Intrigue cafe at the Boston Harbor Hotel and had a few cocktails and some savory appetizers first, you know... to get in the mood for a ghost tour.
All in all it was a good way to start off an evening. After wards I would suggesting stopping by Sel De Terre for a few more drinks and some killer desert. -

This was one of the best tours I've taken. I only got tickets for this tour because we were running out of things to do vacationing in Boston, but I HIGHLY RECOMMEND taking this tour as FIRST on your list of 'things to do' if you're a tourist. When I took the tour, it was the perfect night because it was very misty outside...well it wasn't that perfect because it was kinda drizzling and we were getting wet inside the trolley so we had to zip up the plastic windows and it was hard to see some of the sights we passed by.
I guess it may depend on who you get as a tour guide too. We were lucky to get a charming young lady ghoul by the name of Maggie Poppins. She was very funny and was a great story teller. It wasn't as scary as I thought it would be, but very entertaining and worth every penny. At least you get to walk the graveyards at night which was really something to experience.
I seriously recommend this tour. I personally don't really care for tours since they can get boring and you're stuck for however long, but with Ghost & Gravestones tour, I didn't want it to end...or at least I wish it was a bit longer. We did this tour the last night we were in Boston and it was the perfect way to end a vacation. -

I took this tour in October of last year. Had an absolute blast! All of the characters were awesome, especially our guide Dr. Bartholomew. He was awesome. Great storyteller and his syringe gave me the creeps!
You should definitely check this tour out! it's worth doing even if you're from Boston. -

Awesome tour! It was hilarious and we heard some pretty interesting ghost stories and went to some graveyards at night, which was really interesting.
My only thing was that there were kids on our tour and they were ANNOYING! seriously, if you have kids, leave them at home so they don't ruin the experience for everyone else.
other than that, it was great! if you have the opportunity to take this tour, do it! -

They gave a very enjoyable tour filled with spooky stories and cute theatrics. One way to get to know a city is to get to know its ghosts & its dead; for those who are new to the city, getting to know these stories & sites are indispensable.

Why do the hosts talk so close and so loudly into their microphones? It was seriously distracting. Like screaming into this little boom mic. Everything was muffled. Anyway, this tour is pretty funny and they take you to some cool locations along the way. Not a bad way to spend the front part of a night out.
Loses one star for the price. $35.00 is sort of ridiculous. -

our guides were hysterical, the price was a lot betten than other tours and we learned some interesting stuff too.

i think the kids would have lots of fun on this!! i did and i was 25!
def reccommend the night tour! -

I took this pricy tour with my husband and my 18 year old son. 9pm tour Monday night in June. This was ridiculous, obnoxious and cheesy to say the least. The female tour guide was over the top obnoxious, loud and obviously a male hater. My son and husband were offended by her politically incorrect humor. Nothing scary and very little factual or historical information was shared in the presentation. We could not wait for it to be over. We thought about skipping out mid tour but for some reason I was concerned about offending the tour operator. What was I thinking, and why didn't we leave?? No one shareed that they have a money back guarantee. I found that out by reading these reviews. Wish that I had know. I would not recommend this for any age group. There was a group of girl scouts on the tour that were amused by the cheesy humor. The girl scout leader was appalled by the off color jokes and mildly profanity of the grating tour guide.

Rip off! $37/person for 1.5hour drive around the city. They'll take you to a couple of cemeteries, all but one of which you can visit during the day anyways, for free. They'll tell you some interesting stories. It's a tourist trap with a very childish slant involving screaming at pedestrians as you drive by. If you are older than ... 7, avoid. Trust me!

I went on this tour with a work group, and had a great time for a Tuesday night. Slightly cheesey in nature, this tour is best suited for someone after a few drinks. This was a fun way to blow an evening. Campy, silly, and overdone to the point of being entertaining. Don't go expecting to get a lot of Boston history. We visited a few cemeteries and walked through the common for a bit, where the "gravedigger" told various stories. Drove through town past a few places of interest where this person or that person were killed.
Mostly it's about being silly. The staff clearly have some fun now and again, like going up to a woman on the trolley and offering to play a game. Put your hands on your knees, then wave them in the air and I STEAL YOUR PURSE! *runs off* She spent the next few minutes rummaging through the poor woman's purse, pockets the checkbook, and tries to trade the purse to random passers by. (She did return everything, of course.)
It's definitely all the more fun with a group of friends. If crazy silliness isn't your game and you prefer your tour guide to act like a grownup, this tour is not for you. If you're more in touch with your inner child, you'll have fun. -

Not scary but a lot of fun. Mercy was our "ghost host" and she had a lot of energy. We stopped at a couple of graveyards and heard a bunch of ghost stories...very entertaining, but like I said, not scary. If you are expecting a scary ghost tour, you will be let down, but if you are looking to hear some bizarre Boston history, you will enjoy yourself.

I loved this! It was an entertaining and slightly educational night. Our tour guide was animated and hilarious. I think her name was Minerva. The trolley that we were supposed to take had broken down before the tour even started so Minerva and another tour guide had to entertain us while we waited for another trolley. I was very impressed by their ability to keep everyone engaged in a situation that could have made people very crabby. It was like going to a comedy show before the tour even began!
The tour wasn't exactly what I expected because I thought it would be scary with people jumping out at you but I loved it anyway. We toured two cemeteries in Boston and learned a little of Boston history. We had a great time! -

I thought this tour was "fine." It was very theatrical with overdone accents and staged attempts to scare people. I did not find it to be very informative on history or on ghost lore. Maybe this is a better tour for younger kids but the prices are ridiculous if you are paying for a family. Think of this tour as if you are going to see a show, you pay theatre prices and see something very dramatic. I prefer something more low key and personal so I enjoyed Haunted Boston, a walking tour, better.

Though the weather was cloudy and misty this didn't dampen my spirits (no pun intended) as I looked forward to my Ghost and Graveyard Tour around the city. When you walked up to the counter don't be surprised because everyone was in character, from the dead gunned down soldier to the mistress of darkness whose intention is make you worked up before the tour even began. It was getting dark when we boarded the trolley. Our guide, Lucious and our driver a bloody doctor took us to our tour. The "luscious" guide gives us the history and some of the back-stories about what we are about to see in very funny and entertaining way. Some of the graves of famous people buried there, also the historical events that took place in that neighborhood (Revere's trip to the church to warm the townspeople about an attack), to the grave tomb robbers to the modern tombstone robbers to make themselves a nice coffee table. Actually, there was nothing scary about the tour - sometimes creepy as you walk into the cemetery in darkness but found it to be both education and entertaining. As we head to our last cemetery my friend who came with me from California swore she something in the darkness. So we encouraged her to take a picture and though nothing of it until we boarded the trolley on our way to our final stop. While reviewing the pictures, to my surprise there an obvious orb formation, believe me or not but it is up to you to decided what we saw that night. Before we reached our final destination, our guide Lucious told a story about the most haunted hotel in the city, "The Omni Parker Hotel" believe to be haunted by the spirit that passed away during a tragic elevator ride. By the conclusion of the story, he wanted to recreate it, in the streets of Boston. Now picture this, when he said go he wants all 25 people on board the trolley to scream on the top of our lungs to unsuspecting pedestrian! Therefore, as we wait for the light to turn green, everyone waited patiently, the BOOM! it happened. A pair of female teenage strolling leisurely on the streets of Boston carrying their shopping bags, then all of a sudden just as the trolley slowly come up to them, 25 people scream out of no where. I think I have never seen anyone so stunned in all of my life. Okay, that was a bit mean but boy was it entertaining to watch.

I took my daughters ages 18 and 13 on this tour on Monday, August 10, 2009, and we absolutely loved it!!! Our tour guide's name was Dick and he was a little annoying at first, but then he really had us cracking up. It was a great way to spend our last night in Boston. Dick told us some really creepy true stories about Boston, and made it fun for us. If you love Halloween and creepy stuff, you will love this!
