My first Ethiopian restaurant.Had a long wait line that cleared up in about 20 mnts.We saw groups of people sitting around one plate and eating off it. Maybe ethnic but not my style. The place has a nice feel to it and the food kind of reminds me of Indian chutneys and crepes.Fun place for an evening out.

Solid Ethiopian food.

This place doesn't bring out raves from me but is the best I have experienced in NYC so far.

We had the veggie combo thing. Very tasty with a few options that were new to me. The bread is a tad thinner than I have ever experienced. Maybe that is a good thing so you don't end up feeling quite so stuffed.

Pleasant interior and in a decent spot location train-wise. The wait-staff was decent.

If you are ever in Chicago try the Ethiopian Diamond Restaurant. I think it is the gold standard.

3 stars for solid food in a pleasant atmosphere.

I don't understand the higher ratings on this site for Ghenet. Has no one tried other Ethiopian restaurants in NY? I give it an extra star just for decent ambiance.

Sad to say, my husband and me have been to this place 3 times, only and ONLY because the ambiance is a lot better than the other Ethiopian places and they have a wine list (some of the other places we tried had no alcohol). Twice we took guests, again only because of the wine.

The food is so mediocre. So mediocre that each time I found myself wishing we had picked Meskerem instead (the one closer to times square is our favorite for chicken dibs)
And for all the blazing mediocrity of the food, the service was pathetic.  Each time we went there, we had to re-ask for water twice on an average before we got any. And atleast twice, we had to make sure they didn't forget our food because it took so fricking long.

The waiter- aah the waiter. I have waited to write about him since the first time I went to Ghenet. Yes, very very sadly for us, we have had the same dufus serving us all 3 times. If you ever go there and find that after he finally makes it to your table, your waiter is a tall, not so thin guy with short hair and an I-don't-give-a-f**k attitude, thats the guy I'm talking about. He makes us feel like serving us is the worst  inconvenience in his world. He does not write your order down on a note pad, and thats great if he's actually paying attention. And not so great if he forgets that your ordered an appetizer, or brings you a beef dish when you clearly ordered chicken.  Unfortunately I'm married to a gracious man who tips for even the worst service. I know because we have had the worst service ever at Ghenet and it still gets tipped.

We'll be avoiding the place. 3 chances is all that we can afford for a crappy restaurant in NYC.

My favorite Ethiopian place in Manhattan. Reliably good Ethiopian food, hearty serving sizes when you order combinations, combined plates (what's with the places that gives you each your own injera plate?), and a better wine selection than most Ethiopian places I've seen.

I typically show up with a large suitcase (can't wait to get here from the airport!) and they've always offered to store it behind the counter for me, even though I'm not there enough to be "remembered." I always appreciate it.

A great place to introduce a newbie to Ethiopian food, and good for groups as well as duos.

I'm writing this review 90% as a reply to Sejal D's review:

You know...not all cultures choose to serve their chicken as boneless breast patties.  There are other parts of the chicken that are quite edible and [unfortunately] they tend to come with bones.  And guess what?  Fish come with bones too!

Ghenet is ghreat, at least with the vegetarian combination platter.  Mmmm berbere!

Though I've never ordered a meat dish, I am still confident that the food at Ghenet surpasses that of the other Ethiopian restaurants in the city.  Bonus for the clean look of the place (both in aesthetics and sanitation), decent prices, and non-trendiness despite being in way hip Nolita.

I'm still a novice when it comes to drinking wine, so I'm not the most reliable source for wine information.  With that disclaimer, this novice says she didn't like the shiraz so much because she found it unsmooth and sour.

NOTE: if you get the vegetarian combination platter for 2, you get to try all of the vegetarian dishes, instead of just 4!

I thought Ghenet was ok.  Not good, not bad...just ok.  I went with a few friends and we ordered quite a number of vegetarian items.  Sadly, they delivered food twice that had meat in it (you couldn't tell unless you took a bite and then it's too late), so I didn't feel like they really had their vegetarian patrons' backs.  Once we did get the correct food, I thought it was pretty average.  The service was fair, but pretty slow.  I always find it fascinating that restaurants give the least attentive service when there is no one else to serve.  Oh well.

If you want amazing food and fantastic service go to Queen of Sheba.  I think it's a bit more expensive (I could be wrong), but it's definitely worth the hike to Hell's Kitchen.

C. and I had trouble making a reservation for Valentine's Day, so our solution was this: Go to a restaurant that doesn't take reservations before the dinner rush -- and get seated immediately!

It worked like a charm. Ghenet is a wonderful, basic Ethiopian restaurant. We got the vegetarian sampler for two, which is what I'd recommend. It comes with every single vegetarian option they have but one -- #7, whatever that is -- and enough injera (the spongy bread!) for two. A ton of delicious, healthy, interesting food.

We both got the iced tea, which I'd also recommend. A great place, which warm red walls and a friendly wait staff. I'd go back in a minute.

Who doesn't like communal dining out and eating with your hands? Seriously.  The best way to experience Ghenet is to get the combination platter and try the differing flavors and textures.  Hooray for not taking reservation so you can actually get a table pre and post dinner rush. The service was a little surly and the "Ethiopian wine" was actually American but made from an Ethiopian recipe... not worth the experience unless you like honey grape juice.  For what you're paying for it's definitely worth the trip. I've tried all the Ethiopian places in Manhattan and this is far and away the best.  Great food, nice low-key vibe.  Don't go if you're in a rush.  :)

I crave Ghenet and can't go too long without it!  I always order the vegetarian and have never had meat in my food (sorry Ryan that IS terrible!!!).

If you need a full bar, stop by Tom & Jerry's around the corner before or after your dinner.

I had lunch there a couple of times and it is was always flavorsome. The atmosphere is relaxed, comfortable and very convivial.
The decor is nice and makes you feel at ease.
There is something for everyone, whether you are vegetarian or not with their large selection of dishes.
Whether you want to try Ethiopian food for the first time or already love it Ghenet is the place to go! I've tried others in L.A and none was as good... sadly.

I had no idea that Ethiopian food was such a good date idea. Not only is it communal (shared activity) its sensual (good primer) and fun. Ghenet is a great place, with a surprisingly good wine selection. I didn't try the honey beer but wish I had. The only drawback in Ghenet is the ambiance. There is none.

The place looks like the dining hall of a Marriott hotel. You the one: its the place where you visit with your granma for the Sunday brunch buffet. And that, kids, is not romantic when so much of the experience at Ghenet is. The artwork was remarkable, the waitstaff friendly, the food was flavorful, surprising and filling without feeling as if you're going to burst. Damn I enjoyed myself there.

Take a date to Ghenet. You won't regret it. (That rhyme was unintentional BTW)

After having been to Ethiopian places in Boston, NJ, and DC, this was my first Ethiopian experience in NYC.  I have to say this place was quite disappointing and the service was incredibly slow.  This seemed like a neighborhood spot which had recurring patrons - not a destination spot. Needless to say, I will not be going again.  There was lack of ambiance and the service was incredibly slow. It took 20 minutes to get the sambusa (2 piece) appetizer and over 35 minutes to get our entrees.  All chicken options included bone (no boneless chicken options) and half the vegetarian options were not available on a Saturday night.  Additionally, the wine which was ordered tasted nothing short of crappy.

The decor is nice, but the food is so-so in my humble Ethiopian food opinion. I didn't find it as clean as other nice places I have been. I find this is a common issue with a lot of Ethiopian food. It's oily and not as clean as some others I have tried and swimming in sauce, which I don't mind so much - as long as it delivers a clean flavor. No worries. On to the next!

I love Ethiopian food. No, really. Seriously. I LOVE it. I have loved it as one of my favorite foods for a long time, prior to my recent dietary restrictions including vegetarianism and developing a wonderfully restrictive and annoying wheat allergy. Luckily, this food I can still eat.

Ghenet has recently become my all-time favorite Ethiopian in the city. Came here last week after frequenting it over the past couple of years. They were so accommodating that they made the injera with only the teff flour, eliminating the wheat flour they usually add. The honey wine is great, the food is excellent, the service is fantastic. Add that to the lovely atmosphere and the proximity to my work and subway...I LOVE Ethiopian and this place.

This place is over-hyped.  It's packed with guys trying to impress their dates by showing them how sophisticated they are by showing them how to eat bland food before utensils were invented.  I don't know what Ghenet means in the Ethiopian language but I would wager it might mean sour because every dish I had made me want to pucker up.  The combination plate I got was lukewarm at best and everything besides the spicy beans were just bland and sour.

And don't have their coffee to finish up your meal unless you are looking to get a heart attack because they put BUTTER in it (no, that is not a typo and yes, it sounds really disgusting).

Yes, the food is good. But perhaps you should write your order down for the staff, because chances are, they won't remember it without that. The combination plates are the way to go - but didn't I say spicy beans and not the cabbage and potatoes? And wait a minute, I did order the collard greens, (which were average) didn't I? Oh yes, sorry. Minutes later (oh, now the service is fine?), a generous helping of average collards. Perhaps i should have stuck with the potatoes and cabbage.

That said, the injera is perfectly spongy and very healthy. A vegan could be well fed here. A meat eater could be well fed here. Anyone could be well fed here, so long as they can deal with not getting what they ordered, and possibly enjoying that more than what they did order.

Also, the dolls for sale here are creepy.

I had my first experience with Ethiopian food here and totally fell in love.  I mean, spongy bread that you use to eat with!  So fun!  It's fun for a group, as long as everyone learned to share when they were in kindergarten.

We ordered mead to have with dinner, which was very tasty and complimented the food.  Ordering was fun, because we pretty much left it up to the server.  I think there were six of us, we told them we were hungry and wanted veggie food all around.  They brought out a huge platter that was the perfect amount of food.

All in all it was a fun night and I would definitely bring someone here to pop their Ethiopian cherry!

In case you don't already know, Tali A. and I abso-fuckin-lutely LOVE Ethiopian cuisine. Ghenet was one of the few well-known Ethiopian restaurants in NYC that I hadn't been to, but all that changed on Friday when Tali and I decided that it was time for one of our Ethiopian trysts again. Our phones died but we stuck to plans and met at Ghenet for a late dinner at 9 PM. There was no wait to be seated and the waiters brought us some baked injera with a funky but delish sauce while we ordered. The honey wine was sweeter than what I'm used to but good nonetheless. We ordered the vegetarian combo platter and lamb tibs, boy oh boy, it was a lot of food but we chowed all the mouth-watering food like scavenging hyenas. Sexy. I even managed spill a hunk of sauce on my polo and jacket... Classy, I know. Fun times nonetheless. In true Ethiopian fashion, service was slow, but the excellent dining made up for it. Oh, and they had seafood options on their menu, something I've not seen before... Interesant.

I came here with Lily T. for our Date Auction dinner, and I must say that even though Ethiopian food is a palate treat, there are a couple of counterweights that make my scales tilt conceitedly to the left (the right is reserved for the bias switch), leaving me with no choice but to grant Ghenet a sordid 3. But before we start naming names, shall we survey Ghenet's strong points?

Appetizers: We had Injera in a misir spread; of course it was delicious, proportions were BIG, so big in fact, that we were almost full by the time our main courses arrived. And for those of you who have never eaten Ethiopian before, I must warn you that Ethiopian is a cuisine you eat with your bare hands; no utensils, no chopsticks. Nada. Wash your hands or bring sanitizer. You'll see why a few paragraphs below.

Main Course: I don't remember what Lily had, but I ordered Lamb morsels which constitution of Tej (Honey wine), mustard, basil and saffron was delectable and mouth watering BUT....

....extremely smelly. I went to the bathroom after the meal, washed my hands as if I had just touched a medieval miser with the plague (and mind you, I would NEVER lick my hands/fingers while eating; I ate with the utmost care that my personal decorum code commanded), and still retained the odious food smell well into the time I arrived home. I had to shower for the concoction of spices to die down, and that was just the hands.... my stomach? Let's just say that my entrails felt like Wagner when he composed Goetterdammerung, only that there was no melody, but agony.

My friend from Addis says they run on African Standard Time. I guess that means several hours behind since I managed to celebrate 3 birthdays and grow 14 gray hairs in the time that it took to get our food. That being said, it doesn't stop me from coming here (I've been coming since the days when the walls were painted green). The food is delicious, the berbere and kitfo are take-a-bath-in-it good. A touch nicer than Meskerem, way nicer than Abyssinia (old-school) was; I highly recommend Ghenet... if you have a few spare days.

Well this wasn't the first time I  came here but it was the first time I ate here. I had a great time it was almost closing and the staff was nice enough to seat us and did not rush us after the food had gone. The vegetarian platter was  great and just the right amount of food. The Honey wine is nice too but that is what I had the first time I was here without food. Maybe together wine and food would be just right.

I don't know what people are talking about.  This place is sooo expensive, like 25 bucks for a combination platter that isn't enough AND their service is slow.  The food is a little bit above average.  For that, it gets at least two stars.  Save your money and go to Meskel in the east side or Zoma in Harlem.

This place is really fun.  I went with a group from work and really enjoyed it so I took some friends back recently and had just as much fun, although the food didn't hit it with me as much.  The bread is soft and yummy, the dishes flavorful and diverse and overall yummy, but I think the specificness of the flavor needs more time in between for visits.  It is great for groups though and a must do, at least once.

Sooooooooo good! Ghenet is absolutely the most amazing place to eat with your hands. Don't overdo it on the bread!!

The atmosphere is very calming, sophisticated but casual, and friendly. Everyone who works here is wonderful, and the food is so delicious.

It has been named one of the best places to dump someone...I don't know why, except that the food and calm atmosphere might assuage your soon to be ex??

Favorite Dish: I love to get the vegetarian combo platter with other people. The platters are great to get (there are plenty of meat platters too!) because then you can sample many different flavors. Potato, spices, lentils, vegetables...all scooped up with the spongey bread. I try not to eat too much of the bread because it EXPANDS....ah well. Worth the effort!

Ok, I admit I haven't eaten here in a few years, but once was enough. Ghenet served 'Ethiopian' food doctored for the western palate. While the atmosphere and decor are more sophisticated then say Queen of Sheba, Queen of Sheba wins hands down for taste. By taste I mean the FOOD, not tastefully decorative wall sconces.   Eat here if you are looking for ambiance and mood lighting for your date not for savoury dishes at reasonable prices.

I never tried Ethiopian food until I came here.  I didn't even know what to expect either so we just ordered this big plate of whatevers for 4 people.

When it came out, there were no plates, no forks, no knives, no nuthin'!

Just this pancake type bread.  I ripped a piece of it and grabbed some food on the plate and scooped it into my mouth.  YUM.  How delicious is this!

I love interactive food.  You have to really dig into it with your fingers.  No messin' around with metal implements.  Just go and grab it and take a big bite.  Who cares if it spills all over you.  We're on our second bottle of wine anyways...!

I've never had Ethiopian food before. Never. I got a full blast of greatness last night; it was so great we had one of those moments where the music had a lull while we were talking about the real "lettin' it go" shitters at work or co-workers who don't wash their hands.
It's not the cheapest meal, but it rewards amply once you find out how much food via paper thin bread from which you scoop delicious and really succulent vegetarian madness that you get.
We started with the Sambusa and well....it was six bucks for two teeny weeny pastries.
We also ordered a round of their house beer, a really, really sweet, like honey that complemented our spicy and savory meal. I don't even know what we had. Cooked potatoes with a sauerkraut like shredded lettuce and carrots (Atkett Welt) and a similar dish but with beets (Atkett Salad) which was delicious. Fasolia Wett, Shiro Wett, and Gomen Wett rounded out our Vegetarian combo. That's some string beans, spicy beans, and collard greens (OH SNAP THAT RHYMES WHAT YEAH THAT'S RIGHT), all just really onion-y and probably sodium filled. We were like farkin' chipmunks just grabbing bread and rolling and scooping and munching and whatnot. It was insane.

I agree with many of the other reviews here; their service is kind of at a laid back pace, and with the popularity of the restaurant they could afford a little more pep.

Five stars specifically because we (a party of 6) never had to beg for more injera -- and I've had to do that at other restaurants. Their tej, the honey wine, is really excellent. It's bottled and comes from upstate NY, so not homemade, but it has this lovely honey note, not just wine that tastes like someone stirred honey into it. The first of the two lamb dishes is also excellent. Baaaa. Sorry, little lambies, I'm sorry I ate you.

No, wait. No, I'm not. You tasted good.

Ghenet also gets the distinction of being the first place where I tried kitfo or even noticed it on the menu. Kitfo is basically the Ethiopian version of steak tartare. It's ground raw beef seasoned with the red berbere spice, served with pureed mint on the side. At the time - I found it tasty, and was glad I tried it. After reading Omnivore's Dilemma, it sounds shudderworthy...but I'm still glad I tried it.

Lastly. Watch out for the lock on the bathroom door. Or, sweetheart, KNOCK FIRST. Love you.

Tonight I had my first-ever Ethiopian food, and I hope it will not be my last!!

The thing to do is to order the combination dishes in the back of your menu. Don't even think about doing anything else. For your convenience there are meat-eaters' and vegetarian combination platters. The menu suggests you have to choose from the menu which things you want, but in actuality, you just get a selection pre-determined by Ghenet Restaurant. (Check with your server.)

And, oh what a selection it is!! What arrives to you is a huge plate covered in little piles of foods. Some things look like hummus, others are shredded veggies, others are cubes of meat. There are no utensils. Instead, you get a pile of thin, spongy bread pieces. Tearing off pieces of bread, you can use it to pick up the food with your hands. This makes this an exceedingly fun dining experience for a large or a small group. (Don't worry -- you get a hot towel to wash your hands with first!)

My party was a group of seven; we came early when the place was empty (5:30 on a very cold Tuesday). We ordered the meat combo for three people and the veggie combo for two. Normally you'd think that would feed only five people, but we were all satisfied and not overstuffed! There was something for everyone on the platter, and there was nothing we did not like! The prices are reasonable! But the portions are generous so you may want to order less than you need, as we did.

UPDATE: Although we all had tea, it appears that Ghenet's liquor license has returned, because they had an extensive beverage menu!

The food wasn't bad, but neither was it delicious. The spices and flavors were barely there. Lamb in wine was tough, rubbery and barely covered in sauce. Raw beef was ok, had a nice texture but very little taste. Everything in the place is more or less muted down, for a much better African-food experience I'd recommend Queen of Sheeba.

Best Ethiopian food I've had in New York!  Pricier than other Ethiopian places, but it's still far cheaper than most other restaurants, especially in that neighborhood.  The food is wonderful.  Sometimes, Ethiopian can be bland, and sometimes it can be overspiced, but Ghenet manages to make every dish just right.  Personally, I think the veggie combo is better than most of the meat dishes (with a couple of exceptions, of course).

When the place gets busy (which is inevitable on most weekend-ish nights, meaning from thursday through sunday), the wait staff have a hard time handling everyone, which means service can be slow and you may have to wait for injera or water refills.  I also wasn't a huge fan of their plates, but if that's the only thing I'm complaining about, it must be one damn fine restaurant.

*EDIT*
Sadly, I must remove a star from Ghenet because they no longer serve beer or wine.  What is an Ethiopian meal without Ethiopian honey wine?  I suppose you could always buy a bottle at Warehouse or something and bring it in since they do have BYOB, but it's just not the same.

I like Ethiopian food and this place is a great choice, reasonably priced choice in a neighborhood that has some costly alternatives.  I usually go with my vegetarian friends and we choose the Veggie combo plate. Plenty of the Injera bread is served on the side and at the end of the meal, I usually have to roll myself out of there.  I like the collard greens, the various lentils, and green bean/carrot combo choices.  I also enjoy the honey wine, which balances out the spiciness of the food nicely.

The service is a little slow and could be more attentive.  The prices run about $15-$20 per person.

Great food good service had a great time on a tuesday night no waiting for a table. The only issue was they had no wine or beer but they did allow BYOB.

I came here on Saturday with a large party. Having never had Ethiopian food before, I didn't really know what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised. Eating at Ghenet is definitely and interactive food experience, so I would suggest washing your hands when you arrive since that's the only thing you are going to be eating with!

Since none of us had ever had Ethiopian before, we ordered 2 combo plates for the table so we could try everything. Our food came out on two enormous platters, which were speckled with a little bit of everything from the menu. On the side were plates of this bland foamy/pancakey bread that you use to eat with. The food was really good and really filling. Even though we ordered a combo for 7 people and certainly brought our appetites, we couldn't finish our platters. Price ended up being about $25 a person, even with all of us having a drink and coffee.

An early dinner here yielded a relaxing, quiet meal with an accommodating waitress.  Chris and I shared a combination platter for two, which consisted of an enormous amount of food for $31.95.  They have quite a few bottled beers, and the Ethiopian beer (Harrar) that I had was great.  As others have said, the injera is plentiful.  The meats and veggie side dishes are flavorful, some quite spicy.  When I asked what the best way to eat the food is, the waitress very nicely explained how to neatly scoop food into the bread and made me show her to make sure I had the right idea.  Really fun eating experience and very much worth a visit!

I was surprised how packed this little hole-in-the-wall, Ethiopian/African place gets on a Saturday night!  They had no liquor license the day we went, so we were encouraged to bring in beer or wine and they opened it for us with no corking fee. Not sure if they are getting it back, but I don't see that as a negative. The food is very satiating.  Because it is spicy, with lots of flavor, you feel like you ate so much. But, it is a lot of veggies and so healthy.  If you have never tried Ethiopian, it is a lot like Indian food.  It is especially good if you are dining with vegeterians.  I would recommend going no later than 8PM.  By 9, it is packed and you have to wait a while to be seated.  Also, this place is very casual.  No need to dress up.  Go "as is"....

once again faced with the lack of half-star options, i'm forced to round up or down from my desired 3.5 star rating, and in this case i choose down.  the food was decent, our appetizers were much better than our entrees i would say, but none of it was memorable.  i used to eat ethiopian quite often when i was in high school (about 7-8 years ago) and i remember it being a lot more satisfying than what i had at ghenet the other night.  but, maybe that's just what i ordered, or maybe the 8 years that've passed have dulled my memory.  i'll probably try a different restaurant the next time i want ethiopian food so i can make a fairer comparison.

oh, and ghenet gets rounded down because the service was neither friendly nor attentive.  it's nice they don't pressure you to eat quickly, but it wouldn't hurt for you to actually notice us, or to smile when you do grace us with your presence.
