Tucked away in a quiet, sleepy upscale part of Redlands is Gerrard's.  Somewhere in the back of my head I knew this place existed for years - but had never been.  It wasn't until my mother suggested we take a trip that I discovered this shining gem of a store - and also rued all the years I never bothered visiting it.

To summarize much of what other Yelpers have said; Gerrard's is an upscale grocery store - but that description doesn't really do it justice.  I will try to do so accurately here.

First, a disclaimer.  Yes... the store is a bit pricey on many of its items. It's pretty much on par with a Ralph's or Vons when it comes to prices.  A little more on some things, and a little less on others.  They also have weekly sales via a circular that brings some items down to reasonable levels.

What makes Gerrard's really stand out is their selection.  They have a fantastic selection of foodstuffs - especially hard to find items that I've only seen in specialty shops.  For instance - there's a shop in Solvang called Vinhus that has this wonderful peppered cheese called "Marco Polo".  I've never been able to find it outside of Solvang.  I was both stunned and delighted when I found it right there in their gourmet cheese section?  At about the same price, if not a little lower, than I found at Vinhus?!

They have all kinds of gourmet items from fine cheeses from around the world that you might not find outside of a cheesemonger's shop, to the finest of Boar's Head meats in their deli section.  You'll find so many little gems and treasures down their aisles.  They also feature produce and merchandise sourced from local farms - with special emphasis on organic foods.

But what has truly, truly entranced me is Gerrard's Liquor section.  Their selection of wines, for a grocery store; is superb!  Almost every appellation and varietal is represented here.  Hell...good luck even finding a Pinot Blanc in the "Other Whites" section of Bev Mo!  Gerrard's has at least three different types in stock.  And their selection of hard liquors is sublime.  They have stuff I didn't even know EXISTED.

But really... those of you who are fans of Beers and Ales MUST visit here if for nothing else than their WALL OF BEERS!  Yes.. i said it.. wall...of...beers.  They have a whole wall (and a half!) of cooler cases with beers, ales, lamibics, porters, stouts, heffe-weizens... you nsme it; from all over the world!  The selection is nothing short of epic and you'll spend a good half hour just trying to decide what to bring home.

In the (currently) 3 times the wife and I have come here - we've also encountered exceptional service from the employees.  They are always helpful and friendly.  During one visit, one of the checkers welcomed us personally - noting that she'd never seen us before and asked if we found everything okay - and made suggestions on things we might like based off a few of the items we were purchasing.  She really seemed to know a lot about the products they sell.  You don't see much of that any more.

I really can't recommend Gerrard's any more highly.  I would give it 7 stars if I could.  Bring some cash, a shopping list, and your imagination and I'm sure you'll come home with some treasured finds and a smile on your race - and a private promise to return!

kinda pricey, but they have the best goods ever!  Cheeses and meats are quality and come from all over the world!  The cheeses I found there are from places that I have travelled too and had problems finding it again, until I came to Gerrards!  They have cheeses from Canada, Pike Place in Seattle, San Francisco!  Their wonderful selection will have me returning multiple times a week? day? :)  Staff is really nice too.  Bakeries and cooked foods were a hot hit list too, Gotta check out the hot dinner menu next time!

It doesn't get much better for a neighborhood store. I hate large impersonal grocery stores. Therefore, this is just perfect. I am a temporary resident of Redlands and I am thankful that I discovered the store. As mentioned by others, the prices of common items such as milk and bananas are competitive with the larger chains. The specialty items obviously are expensive- but they always are, as everywhere. I have no problems with the service- I am prepared to wait, if the service personnel are busy attending to another customer. I expect that when my turn comes- I shall be served with the same attention. I have had no rude behavior from any servers. The personnel at the deli may not be relentlessly cheerful, but they are efficient.
My best buy- The crab cakes at the fish counter. They are really very tasty, besides being quite affordable.

I am still giddy over this place. It's so cool! I stumbled upon this market looking for the Stater Brother's near by. I needed some beer and an appetizer for a get together at my friends house.

I walked in not really knowing if they would have what I needed because they were such a small market. But they had that and so much more! A huge bbq pit out front servin' up fresh bbq, cheeses, wines, crackers, beer, fresh food in the deli..... shall I go on?

I ended up leaving with some beer, a ham and cheese quiche (that everyone loved, btw), and some ribs for me (I'm on a low carb diet). All I can say is, boy do I wish they had one of these in Rancho Cucamonga!

Really surprised by the high ratings for Gerrard's... especially the more recent ones. Let me start off by saying that I have been a Gerrard's customer for over 25 years. I've lived in the neighborhood and have been shopping at this market nearly my whole life. Gerrard's used to be a great neighborhood market. Every since the current owner took over, things really took a downhill in comparison to what Gerrard's used to be.

Pros: They do have a lot of specialty items that you won't find most other places in town. Some of the older female checkers that work there have been there my whole life and I'm always greeted with a smile and a familiar face.

Cons: Expensive. Rude customer service in the deli area. Questionable items on the floor in regards to expiration dates on more than one occasion. Produce that rots quickly.

I will continue to go to Gerrard's just because it is convenient when I am close to home... and just for nostalgia sake. But it's really sad to see the deterioration of such a Redlands gem!

I believe in supporting local businesses, and Gerrard's is as local as it gets.  They have USDA Prime beef, which other mas-merchant groceries in Redlands claim to have some sort of version of this, but I don't buy it.  I am practically a veggie, but if I do eat red meat it has to be of the highest quality.

The also source veggies, some of them, from local farms.  Their staff is super nice and helpful, and the store is clean and easy to navigate.  They also have so many specialty items, like vintage sodas, hard to find beers, and a HUGE wine selection for a little grocer.  Also, you can't beat their buy one, get one bottle for 1 cent wine sale!

So I'm a fan of supporting local businesses, i really want to be able to shop here for my weekly groceries but Faaak, it's expensive. They do have plenty of stuff you can't find anywhere else. For a long time this was the only place that I knew of that sold Cider and Frambiouse(i probably spelled that wrong) But i discovered BevMo has it now too...for at least $1 cheaper. Buuut Gerard's is so close to home and it's really convenient so i always find myself coming back

Went there for the first time today. Great place for higher end food, local products, meat...and the cheese section has some real good stuff! Good beer and wine. Overall a very nice market in Redlands. Most of the staff was attentive....except one.

My only problem with this place was the lady in the service deli. I'm standing there with my wife for a few minutes and the lady looks over and asks "Did you want to get something" with a scowl and body language indicating that I disrupted her day.  I remained very polite and asked for some bakery items. Without saying anything, she got my stuff together. I said "thank you" and she grunted. I turned to my wife laughing in disbelief! So...beware of the older lady with lots of makeup...seriously...she had eyelashes painted on.

I will go back...but will avoid the deli if she is back there! Lol!

Oh how I love this place. I seriously wish that I could work at a place like this...instead of behind a computer for 15 hours a day. Every time I go here I am in awe of the cool artisan products that I simply HAVE to try. Their produce is of excellent quality.

A few years ago I stopped in there on a cool morning and they had hot soup. The soup was Philly Cheesesteak. OMG! We got a bowl and sat in the car and ate it and then my friend went back inside to get more. He still asks for the soup, to this day. I have never come across them making soup there again, but I am certainly hoping to.

I went by a few weeks ago and they were having their 80 year anniversary celebration. They were giving away Boars Head Hotdogs out front with yummy toppings. So good. They even make their buns fresh inside. It was the best hot dog bun...and Boars Head makes some quality meats.

I love their deli, the meat and cheese selection is great.

We really need more specialty places like this in the area.

    TOP NOTCH!

Looking for FRESH, awesome strawberries IN MY AREA, I was led to Gerrard's. I had forgotten about this place and hadn't been back since high school and that was years ago.

This place is way better then going to any of the major grocery stores, of course as everyone knows, one must travel to specialty stores.

The strawberries here are hand picked and locally grown. They come in the old school small green baskets and you can smell them. Something that all major stores lack. While I think French strawberries are the best, for being stateside and in my area, they are the best. Taste the difference!

They also have really good couverture chocolate, powder and blocks. Think of this place just as a tad bit better than Trader Joe's. Except TJ's don't have couveture chocolate (not that I've seen anyways).

The prices are pretty cheap too compared to TJ's and major stores. The organic stuff is about .50 cheaper sometimes a $1, the utensils are cheaper too.

They have a full bakery and deli and everything is made at the store fresh.

If you live in the Redlands, Loma Linda, S.B. area you should come here and check out their strawberries. LoL.

Gerard's deserves a healthy 4.5 stars for the huge variety of beers, cheeses, deli items, and other goodies variegated throughout the store. Need truffle oil? They got it. Need Dalmatian Sage? They got it. Want some yummy olives or fixins for a pulled pork sandwich? They got. Sweet tooth? The bakery has you covered. Just by virtue of the fact that they carry such a wide range of products, this market is a go-to. Not to be discounted is the friendly and helpful staff. Check it out.

I grew up in this store, and even though it's under new management (as of a few years ago) I'd have to say that it has only improved. In addition to the staples, they also have shifted focus to quality, near-gourmet foods. Fresh-squeezed Redlands orange juice, delicious house-made guacamole (you HAVE to try this), an impressive wine selection and a *huge* array of cheeses are just a few of the reasons I love this store.

I've been going here my entire life.  Great local market that has just gotten better throughout the years.  Great beer and cheese selection.  During the summer they have amazing heirloom tomatoes and vegetables that are locally grown.  Much more than a traditional grocery store.  Love this place.  And they deliver their food to your house.

Best grocery stop in the area!

If you can't cook and you eat out of packages you won't get this place so don't bitch if you can't get hamburger helper for 49 cents.

This is the only place around that always has USDA PRIME steaks.  Also a very worthy selection of beer, wine, and booze - their buyer clearly knows his stuff!  Excellent produce including local and organic stuff.  Better selection of cheeses than other places in the area too.

This small independent market has been around Redlands forever.  Originally downtown on Orange street they have long been in their current location in a nice residential area.  MIght be a little out of the way if you're not familiar with the area but easy enough to find.

Gerrard's has a great butcher.  Won't find PRIME beef anywhere else.
Love the addition of cheese tasting.
For a single guy like me, the meal deals - one entree and two sides... can't be beat.
The best thing about Gerrard's is the wine selection and Bob Kirkland the Gerrard's wine guy.  Bob puts on a monthly wine tasting at Napoli's resturant which I highly recommend.  Great wines, great company.  Plus Bob tells you all about the wine he is pouring for you.  Typically, 12 to 18 wines at these tastings.   Don't go on an empty stomach or stay afterwards for dinner.

A good smaller-size grocery store.  I wouldn't do a whole lot of shopping here for the basics because the prices seem a higher than average.  But lots of local stuff all over the place.  Lots of specialty items.

Checkout service is usually on the slower side, but that gives you more time to look out the window and try to figure out what's going on outside.  Is it a barbecue?  Sometimes.  Is it a group of older people passing the time under the eaves?  Always.  Is it bags of groceries you can buy and have donated to family services?  Around the holidays, yes.  Is it ever the same? No (except for the old people).  Is it that enjoyable to sit in plastic chairs with your toes practically in the parking lot?  I'm going to have to try it some time.

I'm pretty partial to this place cause im right down cypress from them, and my fiance's family owned the gerrards prior to selling it to the gerrards family (or brothers, or whatever), so its kinda a cool story.

So call me disgusting, but we love going just to eat the cheese in the little sample buckets. Yeah, at first I was like "oh my god kevin, you're rank for eating cheese that people could be, like, sneezing and snotting on or something. But i got past that.

It was also the only place that carried Pepper Plant hot sauce from Monterey---its like a thicker tabasco with chunks of garlic. Oh god. Its just so good. But I havent seen it in awhile. If its ever back, do pick up a bottle.

Carne asada tacos on saturdays are DIVINE!! otherwise, yeah, id have to sell my firstborn if i had to shop here on a regular basis, and yeah, there are alot of senior citizens in the parking lot that CLEARLY cannot drive (ive been almost hit 4 or 5 times cause people just back up and dont look) But this is a cute place. Good beer selection. Trader Joes is my place for everyday stuff, but I like to come here sometimes cause im a nerd. I actually like grocery shopping!!

*Tip---check their ads that come in the mail, cause every few weeks or so their prime beef goes on sale for choice price. Its worth it.

This is a great local grocery, it has a wonderful alcohol selection, one of the best cheese counters in the area, and carries some hard to find items - it even has a small British imports section - handy if you need to pick up some Heinz beans or Salad Creme...

So why the low 2-star rating? The meat counter... it's pretty terrible, too many times been sold or offered meat that was way past it's prime... and too many times for it to be a one-off or freak occurrence.

I only come here a few times a year when I am visiting grandma but I think it is a fantastic market. Old school good service, knowledgeable staff and a really good selection.
I get so sick of the pretentious snobbery that is prevalent in the boutique markets in SF so it is refreshing to be treated like a welcomed customer here.
You can get all your basics no problem. They really shine with the excellent beer/wine choices, loads of artisan cheeses and killer take home stuff (mmmm tri-tip).
I love walking down to the market by all the big homes on huge lots dotted with palms and citrus trees. I can't wait to go see grandma again.

Gerrard's is a great place! We love the wine selection. Never again will you ever have to wait for BevMo's 5 cent wine sale to come around, when Gerrard's has the 1 cent sale all year! I love the little cheese samples they have too. We've found so many good cheese there because of those. Also a great selection of bottled sodas that you can get by the bottle.

The prepared food counter is where it's at, though. The macaroni and cheese they make there is amazing. I dream about that stuff. Great sandwiches with Boars Head brand meat, REALLY good burritos, and even a good place to pick up a home-style meal to-go...warm and everything.

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the prices for the regular groceries are a little on the high side. I'm sure it's because it's tough for a smaller grocery store like Gerrard's to compete with major chains like Stater Bros, but for us, Gerrard's is more of a place where we get some of our specialty items (and prepared foods), rather than the full on grocery trip.

I do hope Gerrard's will be around for a very long time. It's a staple in Redlands and it's really a great place.

I appreciate this place for a myriad of reasons. I will start with the obvious mommy-based one: The little shopping carts. My daughter loves to help out and will follow me around forever if I give her one of those things. I do not go here for "regular" items, I go here for the gourmet style items this place specializes in: Cheese, wine, meat, fresh seasonal produce that does not taste, well tasteless. My little family is seriously addicted to their Sausilito style Turkey, I could eat it everyday, I should actually, I would be skinnier. They had this wonderful cheese section, seriously you like cheese? Go here. It is crazy cheese land up in that area. They have a great sandwich box for around 6 dollars that includes a largish sized sandwich, a side, and a cookie. Great for park play dates. Their 1 cent wine sale is ALWAYS going on (as previously mentioned). I love that they give back to the community with those cute little 5 cent tokens you get when you use a recycled bag (yet another thing my daughter likes to do). They have fresh squeezed orange juice and BBQ some days. I am so happy we can walk/bike here from our house.

Gerrard's is great! Maybe a decade back, the place wasn't much, but the folks that took over then really improved things.

Overall, Gerrard's is a decent market, with most of what you need (smaller than some of the big markets, so they can't have a dozen different types of toilet paper...) Where it really shines is in specialty items. The wine selection is much better than most supermarkets, and the cheese selection is easily as good as (possibly better than) some of the fancy markets in LA. Gerrard's also has the more unusual and odd items, and fun weird stuff that you don't find in the big markets. Also, the prices are pretty decent, especially on the better stuff, and especially compared to the fancy markets in LA.

I just discovered this place and I will never, ever go back to Stater Bros!  I love that it's so little, but it boggles my mind that they have everything I need and then some!  I guess that's what comes of not having such huge volumes of one product on a shelf.
I needed pizza dough one day (and was too lazy to make it) and I know SB doesn't carry it, so I thought I'd try this place.  Turns out all they have is the stuff in the can, but it felt like a movie where the hero goes to chase a ball that rolled into some hidden cave and discovers a treasure trove hidden for millenia.
Ok, a bit over dramatic, but I love it here.  The grocer helped me pick out eggplant and the cute old butcher recommended a certain kind of sausage.  The checkers are the kind where you get to know them and they ask what you're making for dinner.
They have a superb selection of meat and cheese and lots of specialty items that you couldn't get in the "ethnic" aisle at SB.  Also, they have a little grinder where you can get freshly ground peanut butter (ingredients: peanuts).  The prices aren't WalMart low, but they're competitive, and a lot of the specialty things are cheaper than at a regular grocery store (stock up on red beans and rice!).  I feel ridiculous getting so excited about a grocery store, but it's just that amazing.

Trader Joe's, Clarks and my most favorite of all-Gerrards-this is my grocery trifecta. Gerrards has the best meat counter-they're true butchers who know how to handle prime rib when you ask and don't go blank when you tell them cut away from the bone, but tie it to the bone,) short ribs, and I'm always able to get things like lamb shanks, which is huge in my house. Do check dates though-don't often buy off the counter myself, but have occasionally encountered things that should be taken off.  There's a multitude of other foodie items to collect-artisan cheeses (reminds me of grazing through Zabars in NYC, sniff sniff,) chocolate biscuits from England, and great local produce. They carry Hangar 24, too.The wine guy is knowledgeable and stocks a lovely assortment-most of my favorite central coast wines are here.  All around-they pack a great assortment in not a lot of square footage and the folks that work there couldn't be nicer. It's just such a nicer experience than going to a typical grocery store, and you feel good giving them your business.

The market itself is OK and the bakery is average. They do have a good assortment of cheese. The food in the deli is only fair and the service in the deli is terrible. In the past two weeks I have left the store 3 times in the evening because I could not get service in the deli. One of the times two girls were standing in the back talking while one girl waited on customers. She asked for help and they ignored her. Tonight I purchased a half pound of shredded BBQ beef. When I got home I discovered that I had a half pound of fat. It was the most expensive dog food that I have purchased.
