Full disclosure: Like many Dot Rats, I am a former employee of Gerard's, as is my mom and brother. He gave me my first job and I worked in various capacities in Gerard's convenience store, and in some of his seasonal ventures as well (Carson Beach, Esplanade, etc).
Gerard's restaurant is an Adam's Village insititution. Gerard has owned the place for something like 40 years, and is there every day not just greeting and gladhanding, but actually doing work! He helps load the catering truck, he serves food at catered events, he stocks shelves in the convenience store, etc etc etc.
The caption for a 5-star rating is "As good as it gets." This is true for Gerards because it doesnt try to be "cutting edge" or a "foodie destination". Gerard gives his neighbors what they want: Great prime rib, hearty meatloaf, authentic and traditional Irish breakfasts, etc. Theres no saffron infused foie gras foam, no duck under a brick with black truffle marmalade, but there is good food, homey atmosphere, and hospitable service.
Gerard is super active in the community, and his name has been on the back of little league jerseys for decades and he never says "no" to community groups looking for gift certificates. You just cant imagine a business owner who is more supportive of the neighborhood.
I cant say enough good about Gerard's and the way the place is run. Get in there soon!Listed in: Last Meal Contenders....

We went here for lunch today. We thought everything was great. We like to try so many places, from diners to white table cloth; Ethnic food-trucks to dive bar. For what it is - local comfort food with great value eats, we thought it was a win!
I got the fish n chips, love the fries with the coating (cornstarch I'm guessing because very delicate). Fish seemed to be Haddock. Corn meal coating, instead of batter, which was different than usual, but very good. Cole Slaw came with, a bit on the sweet side like it is store bought, but still good.
Wife got the Irish BLT, made with Irish Bacon (to each their own...) and she was in heaven. Fries and cole slaw there too.
We're looking forward to going back! We hear the Full Irish Breakfast is wonderful -

Like most people from the area, I have been to Gerard's many, many times, mostly for breakfast. They are normally really tasty and always reasonably priced. The service is usually very quick, even on super busy weekend mornings. I usually get the Eggs Benedict, which is always smothered in delicious cheese sauce.
So why the three stars, you ask? My husband and I went here on Saturday morning this past weekend and it was HORRIBLE! We showed up at around 10:30 and it was pretty crowded with folks eating breakfast, but we were seated right away. The girl who sat us took our drink order and brought us our drinks right away. Then we sat there. And sat there. And sat there. Finally some older male waiter who I've never seen there before came over to take our order. I got the Eggs Benedict (as usual) and the hubby got a waffle. Our drinks were both empty and he didn't bother asking us if we wanted a refill or if we wanted something else. He just walked away. So again, my husband and I are left sitting there waiting. And waiting. And waiting. And waiting. After 45 minutes, we decided we were going to just throw down $5 for the drinks and take off since we clearly weren't going to be eating. Just then, the waiter finally comes over with our food (I think he saw us getting ready to leave). It tasted like it was sitting under a heat lamp for ages, which it probably was. The home fries were dried out and the normally great Eggs Benedict had a really weird texture and very little sauce. At first I thought that maybe they were short staffed in the kitchen. But all the other patrons with different waitresses came and went while everyone in our section sat there waiting. Maybe it's not fair that I am letting this one experience drag down my rating, but truthfully, the place is kind of going downhill. I know that I will end up giving them another chance so if it improves, I will update my review accordingly. -

Cool neighborhood spot in Neponset/Dorchester. They have their own main entrance to the restaurant but the local thing to do is walk in through the convenience store to say hello, buy their Mass Millions tickets, and then over to Gerard's.
Went here for lunch and fish and chips were excellent - hot and crispy right out of the fryer and the cod/haddock (can't remember) was fresh and flakey inside.
Service was a bit slow but friendly. If you want a Boston local neighborhood feel and friendly place to see the locals, Gerard's is a great place.
Bottom line: Great fish and chips and lots of local color. -

A Dorchester landmark....nay, an institution. And, apparently...one of its better kept secrets.
I've been going here off and on for over 25 years. It's a great place to run into old neighborhood friends since even those that have moved away seem to come back for a meal now and again.
They have a surprisingly large menu for a small neighborhood restaurant and the food has always been very good. The staff is great...some of the best I've ever run run across. -

I've been here twice now for breakfast and have left both times extremely satisfied. They have high quality food, a huge menu, and really nice waitresses. They have a bacon, egg, and cheese bagel sandwich that is so simple and so good that I was shocked to put it on my all time favorite BECBagel list. The food takes a little bit, but it's totally worth it. Omelettes and home fries are awesome too!
And I love that you feel like you've found a hidden gem right through a convenience store. -

The convenience store section of Gerard's is the best place in town to get coffee. I don't know what the trick is, but this is by far my favorite place to score my morning fix. Not to mention the staff is amazing. It feels great to walk in and have Dottie pouring my coffee just how I like it without my saying a word. You just don't get service like that anymore.
The restaurant is a nice place for a homecooked meal. The staff is always pleasant and the portions are good. -

Looove Gerard's. Love the slightly shady convenience store entrance. Love the plate of fried everything, topped off with a GIANT salad. Wish the other customers weren't over 40 years my senior, but hey, I'll probably still be coming back when I'm 60, so I won't judge.

This is the GREATEST family restaurant. It has a homestyle feel to it and is an amazing place to have breakfast, lunch, or dinner. The portions are huge and filling and the food is delicious and always served up quickly and hot! The menu has so many items on it that you could take a while trying to decide. You just have to go back many times to try everything. I have to say that breakfast at Gerards is one of the best ones I have ever had. The waitstaff is very friendly and helpful and overall it's absolutely worth your time to check out!

I have been meaning to try Gerards again after several years without a visit. Reveiws seem to be good.. I was overall dissapointed. the food was good though. Service was slow, slow between both courses. We were not able to finish out entree's and asked for a doggy bag.. here is the rub, the waitress dropped 2 empty containers and a plastic bag for us to use.. we slide our own entree's off our plates into the "boxes" . Table next to us did not get the same level of service, they got better.. their food was packaged for them .. I asked for the check and had to wait for that as well.. it was "literally" dropped on the table.
I am a server, a bartender.. I tipped well but it would have been an excellant tip if I didn't have to package my own entree.
