Just recently went to see a performance of one my favorite farces here, Noises Off!. I was pleasantly surprised at how well the cast pulled off this farce, as it is no easy task when performing a play within a play within a play.
The Georgia Shakespeare Company did an excellent job at performing, set design, and general running of the house. We ordered our tickets online and they were waiting for us at will call which had our tickets at hand upon arrival. We walked into the waiting lobby and were greeted by some of the student workers. Upon opening of the theatre we were shown our seats by a delightful usher. After waiting a few minutes Tim Conley, the director, approached the stage to welcome the crowd and to set the stage for the performance that was to begin shortly.
Finally the moment of truth had arrived. The play was about to begin. The lights went dim, then the stage lights brightened the stage where out comes the cast to delight the audience. The play itself was very delightful and the audience really enjoyed the action.
I can't believe that this is my first play I've attended in Atlanta after living here 9+ years, and I can't believe this is my first time at Georgia Shakespeare. It was a great time had by all. -

We went here to see Love's Labour's Lost on Friday night. We packed a picnic and enjoy the company of other picnickers outside of the building. It was quite cool to bring your own food and drinks and enjoy it with others of the same liking. It was kind of crowded, but there were still a bunch of empty tables in the back.
Anyway, after we put the picnic stuff away, we got to our seats in the balcony. The prices vary from day to day, seat to seat, so make sure you check out the site to get the best combo. We chose the balcony as the view is quite good and you don't have to look over someone's shoulder.
Love's Labour's Lost was wonderful. The actors delivered their lines flawlessly and worked through the lights going in and out due to the thunderstorm. The staff was also very friendly and went out of their way to help.
I would definitely come here again sometime in the future. -

Some of the best Shakespeare I've seen (and I've even seen it at the Globe Theater in London). The actors clearly love their art and make every performance a memorable one for the audience. The sets and props are very well done right down to the last detail. I'm such a fan and have been coming here for entertainment ever since I was a small child. You know that if Shakespeare is keeping a 6 year old interested, it's got to be wildly entertaining and fun.
If you still aren't convinced by Shakespeare, the summer program often includes other works in-between the Bard's. These plays are just as good, but don't dismiss Shakespeare too quickly - you never know when the original play is being turned into a hilarious modern comedy. Give it a chance; you might be in for a real treat behind the normal awesome this place delivers.
The acoustics and seating in the building are excellent. No real bad seat in the house and you're never struggling to hear or understand a word the actors speak. Even from the balcony you'll get a great view! If you come early - as you should! - bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the sights of the Oglethorpe campus. It's a gorgeous place, and if the weather's nice, a great spot to sip on wine and eat a bite before settling in your seats for an incredible performance. The beautiful campus is the one thing that makes me sad - these performances used to be all outdoors! Still, now that performances can go on rain or shine (and it's funny when the actors incorporate the pounding rain into the show!), you'll never miss a beat. -

I can't believe it has taken me this long to write a review about Georgia Shakespeare. It is always such an enjoyable experience. For people who love & know Shakespeare, this place is great, but it is also great for people like me, who are just now getting to know the works of Shakespeare. If you think you aren't going to be able to understand Shakespeare, Georgia Shakes will prove you wrong. I HIGHLY recommend this place! P.S. There truly isn't a bad seat in the house! I've sat everywhere from the front to the back to the balcony & never been disappointed. Bravo! 5 Stars!!!!
History
Established in 1986
Georgia Shakespeare was co-founded in 1985 by Lane Anderson, Richard Garner and Robert Watson. After a year of planning, Georgia Shakespeare (then called Georgia Shakespeare Festival) opened its first season on July 10, 1986, featuring "The Taming of the Shrew" and "King Lear" in rotating repertory. 6,000 people attended the 25 performances that season, held in a 60' X 90' white tent located on the Oglethorpe University front athletic field.
Different field locations on the Oglethorpe campus hosted different versions of the tent theatre in the first eleven years. In 1997, the John A. and Miriam H.Conant Performing Center opened with Georgia Shakespeare's production of "The Tempest." The 509-seat thrust stage is Georgia Shakespeare's official home.
In 2001, Georgia Shakespeare became the second theater in Georgia to be a member of the League of Resident Theaters (LORT).
