2 reviews for Georgia Pig Barbeque & Restaurant Inc
I love true barbecue, over wood fire, simply adorned. So the Georgia Pig is nearly perfect. Okay, so the place is a bit rundown -- that's part of the charm. The pulled pork sandwich is about as close to perfection as one can come: pork butt slow smoked over a wood fire then hand chopped with burnt ends into a smoky, juicy filling for soft buns.
And the "sauce" is a vinegary marinade with a heavy mustard overtone which is exactly what a smoky butt needs. If all you know is the sweet, tomato-based sauces of Kansas City or even Texas, the Southern style sauce at Georgia Pig is an epiphany. Okay so I'm gushing, but it's that good.
The sides are basic fries and coleslaw, nothing to write home about but serviceable. They do offer Brunswick Stew as a special, a Southern staple of meat, carrots, peas, and rich gravy. They also do a pretty good job with fried chicken. I highly recommend the pork plate which is a sandwich with fries and coleslaw, chased by a pork sandwich.
If you're in Fort Lauderdale, Miami, or just flying through Fort Lauderdale, take a 20 minute detour from Fort Lauderdale airport to US 441 (about 3 miles west) and stop in to the "Pig. Oh, and they don't open on Sunday.
Being a native of Broward County, I'm sad to say that I have never been here before. This restaurant is old Florida at it's best. A one room with a counter, terrazzo floor joint that hasn't be remodeled in decades. The old southern charm comes out when you meet the wait staff. Just very pleasent and friendly. I had the sliced pork platter with fries and slaw. It was good BBQ. I am more of a red sauce guy and they serve their Q with a mustard base sauce. Not really used to that but again this was my first time there. The meat was nice and smokey and the sides were good too. My favorite was the banana pudding. This was homemade goodness. Noting fancy here, but man do I love these favors. Fresh bananas in a pudding with vanilla wafer cookies topped with whipped cream. Good stuff here.Remember to tell them Dan sent you for the fat free (yeah right lol) banana pudding and Stay Hungry!
