My friend and I ordered the roast beef dinner. All dinners come served with one side, baked potato and a dinner roll. We both received generous servings of roast beef with Au Jus and opted for two sides instead of the baked potato. They lost a star for their sides. The potato salad and macaroni salad were just okay.
If I'm in the area, I would come back. The service is friendly, good prices and good MEAT.
This is a review for their IRIDESCENT pastrami sandwich.
I don't think it incited the same rage as the pastrami fail at Golden Gate Meat Co, but this one was around the lines of that.
I walked in George's today around 2 PM. "I'm here for the pastrami!" I said enthusiastically. I saw the pastrami sitting there ready to be sliced and I was excited. She asked me how I wanted the pastrami - I said with rye...."Oh we don't have rye - soft roll, dutch crunch, or wheat." Uh oh, Wheat? are you friggin kidding me? Wheat with a pastrami - MURPLES! I ordered it on a soft roll with mustard - which can be good. The chicken coop over on Taraval hand slices the meat and puts it on a soft roll and it's to die for. However this meat was not to die for. It was iridescent - fish scale like. My favorite pastrami places never ever have iridescent pastrami.
I asked them where they got their pastrami and she didn't say a word. It wasn't something she wanted to divulge....hmm makes me think.
George, you are not a BBQ place, so stop calling yourself that. You have a rotisserie cooker and you do good things with it, but the "BBQ" on the sign is just false advertising.
Honestly this place is a good option for a cheap meal that doesn't completely suck. Anyone coming here to be blown away is just not getting it. Not every restaurant or deli needs to be the original or the best; they just need to get you stuffed and happy. And that's exactly what this glorified lunch counter does.
Go with the beef brisket sandwich. It's HUGE and at just $5.99, it's a very good bargain.
Full disclosure: George is Greek and so am I so I might be biased (but not really)
Bummer I had to take away a star because the pastrami wasn't as good as the chicken. It was decent and a good price plus I like the banal interior and service so I'll go back but I think next time I'll try the Turkey seems like he can do the foul but not the beasts.

The restaurant has an all-day $5.99 special. The special is a 1/4 of a chicken (one leg and thigh or breast and a wing), two sides and a roll.
I just found out that they used and posted my photo to illustrate the hungry customers what the meal looks like.
So if you come here to eat and if you see a picture of that special, that picture is mine!
Boy, am I "SPECIAL"!
My picture is a work of art!
You can call me, "Matt van Gogh"!

George's BBQ is perfect for feeding a lot of people, last minute, as we recently experienced this July 4th holiday.
We have eaten here before, and we've always found their chicken to be absolutely excellent. When we needed to get a lot of supplemental food because we were running out this weekend, we called ahead and asked about their chicken. We were told to "come on down" and so we did.
Our guests were blown away with the food, and they couldn't believe it was from take out. Plus, the beet and macaroni salads were also a huge hit.
We definitely recommend George's. Huge party or just food for 1 person, they always make your tummy feel GOOD!!!
George's BBQ on 24th is a carnivore's dream come true serving up massive portions of meat and more meat. This isn't your typical BBQ restaurant though, but it is a splendid hof brau. All the meats and the potatoes are cooked in the big rotisserie oven next to the window. The food is served cafeteria style. I've already eaten here twice, and I can picture myself returning often.
On my first visit I went with the Roast Beef dinner. All dinners include a hot baked potato, split open and fattened up with two big tablespoons of butter. You can request other toppings such as sour cream if you desire. A soft torpedo roll with another tablespoon of butter smeared inside and your choice of side salad also comes with the dinner. My order was carved up by George himself, and take a look at this massive plate he served up (http://www.yelp.com/bi...). I had the roast beef with Au Jus and selected macaroni as my salad of choice.
The roast beef was magnificent. There was easily a pound of it on my plate. The cuts I got were from the center of the roast, perfectly medium, dripping in juices and so tender. I ate it up slowly enjoying each and every bite. Once all the butter melted and seeped onto the plate with the roast beef the potato didn't seem as rich anymore. The macaroni salad (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) was good too. The pasta is cooked soft but not too soft. It's creamy and sweet but not overly sweet with just a few bits of carrot to give it a little texture. I didn't realize the roll was pre-buttered and bit into what can only be described as a butter sandwich. Aside from the surprise inside the roll, I loved the entire meal.
On my follow-up visit I decided to go all out and ordered the George's Special which includes their signature rotisserie chicken, meaty pork ribs and roast beef along with the baked potato, roll and side salad. This was another massive serving with nearly half of a chicken, three thick meaty ribs and freshly carved roast beef to fill up the plate (http://www.yelp.com/bi...). I had George's BBQ sauce on the ribs and the chicken, and I selected the potato salad as my side.
The chicken was extremely tender and easily fell off the bone. It had very good flavor. I especially liked the parts with the skin attached because in a rotisserie the meats' oils drip off leaving a crispy, non-oily skin intact. George's BBQ sauce was very weak though. It was very thin and very sweet. I would have preferred a bit of smokiness in the flavor but none was to be found. The pork ribs were a huge disappointment. The meat was overcooked and extremely tough. I couldn't even rip the meat off the bone with my teeth. I had to cut into it with a knife. The pork was tough, dry and jerky. It had good flavor though which got lost in the sweet BBQ sauce. Even though I got an end piece of the roast beef this time it was easily what I expected, perfectly cooked and tender without being too tender. I also noticed the garlicky rub on the outside crust of the roast. NIce!
The potato salad (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) was very good with big chunks of potato mixed in with mashed up potato. The mustard to mayo ratio was very good and it was nice and smooth and gritty. I couldn't finish the salad as all the meat left me stuffed.
I plan to return to try the spaghetti and a fresh carved sandwich. I will never order the ribs again, and I'll probably avoid the BBQ sauce too. In the dessert department they have several types of cheesecakes on display. Stick with the rotisserie chicken or the roast beef, and come in with a huge appetite. The staff is very friendly and the dining in options are very clean. Cash only.
Bombers. Whole chicken take-out for 8 bucks? Easy. That's the hard part of a meal, done. Chicken sandwiches on day two. Super value, super tasty.
I wanted to try this place so I can make my own comparison to Pete's. There seems to be a lot of drama so I wanted to know what it's all about.
1. If you go to George's or Pete's don't expect traditional BBQ. Go with the understanding that it is rotisserie chicken, ribs, etc. covered with sauce just before serving. So, enough of that discussion.
2. Don't quite understand all the talk about the decor. It is a little tacky but it is not any different than the decor you might find in some of the local taquerías.
3. It is obvious that George is trying to copy exactly what Pete has been doing. The result: "not even close!"
4. Nothing at George tastes as good as Pete's. Why? I don't know, I just know that it doesn't taste as good. Maybe it's the sauce, maybe it's how the chicken is prepared before cooking, maybe the older rotisserie machine produces better results than the new one, but bottom line is that Pete's is good eating and George isn't. Just my opinion.
Service was fast and decent. Potato salad was good. Brisket was OK. Ribs disappointing.
Yeah, this place was so 'meh' that I can't even muster the energy to write complex sentences.
This place is Pete's BBQ's Twin and everything I wrote in my Pete's BBQ review applies here too.
http://www.yelp.com/bi...
In fact There were a couple people I recognize from Pete's working there. If this is an offshoot of Pete's it's a pretty good idea.
If you are looking for a traditional BBQ joint you probably won't be happy with this place. One of my yelp friends called it "hofbrau style" but I'd call it a cafeteria style restaurant. This is run by some Greek guys with some Hispanic people helping out. The meat is tender, the BBQ sauce is kind of watery, the potatoes are good with BBQ sauce slathered on them. I ordered the Chicken and Ribs combo with a side of Spaghetti. The meat was good but the spaghetti was terrible, also they serve it with an inedible roll with a hard glob of butter in the middle. I didn't try the other sides because they looked exactly the same as the crappy sides they serve at Pete's
My final conclusion is that the place is a little nicer than Pete's, the people are a little friendlier than at Pete's,but the food is not quite as good as Pete's. Pete's is two blocks from my house and George's is six blocks from my house, I'll stick with Pete's or maybe I'll just go to Johnson's instead.
I'm sorry....
I hate to do this but I am so disappoint in the food. George, should have stolen the secret recipe from Pete (Pete's BBQ on 20th and Mission).
Here's the gossip - They "Used to be" related. When George decide to open up his own place, Pete was not happy. They had a fallen out and George should have taken the secret condiment recipe.
The food does not have the same taste as Pete's. It lacks flavor and soul. George, copied everything from his old place of employment and did not put any new ideas into his own venture.
I will go out of my way to eat at Pete's.
The decor was just plain silly. It's a sad beach scene......huh?
I walk down 24th almost everyday. Well OK sometimes I take the bus. And I can smell George's from the bus and I'm glad that that I get off by BART.
The special dinner price is very reasonable - I like the chicken and I like the sauce - I sopped up all my sauce - not so spicy, and a little more vinegary - but I'm filipino and can drink vinegar ;).
I haven't tried all of the food but the staff is nice. Its not really just barbeque - there's like an all-beet salad ( I love beets).
Its a good place for me to have dinner. I don't know if they have wi-fi, but I noticed some wall sockets next to a couple tables.
George is cool. The food is great for cafeteria style dining. I think this spot has potential to be a neighborhood favorite and a good alternative from the Mission burrito.
FIRST!
I walked by here today in search of dinner... I was about to walk in until I saw what I hated about this place. The decor is just plain WEIRD, the food looks like its high school cafeteria caliber and the dude serving it just looks uninterested.
I agree with other Yelpers... This isn't BBQ its ROTISSERIE. Which means its weak sauce.

I really wanted to like you George... But you failed. The line outside made me think you were… Read more »
After a year of living within a few yards from each other, my boyfriend recently moved from 16th to 24th Street. You would think that staying within the Mission and moving just one BART ride away wouldn't make a difference, but let me tell you it DOES. If it's after 7pm, our dining options are limited to Mexican food and McDonald's. We were headed to the latter for some McNuggets when we saw that George's BBQ had finally opened.
I ordered the spaghetti with sausage, which can be described with three words: school cafeteria lunch. It was too watery and lacked flavor. The sausage also didn't sit well with me afterward (I'm still burping it up). The bf said he liked the ribs, but he didn't care much for the potato salad (also flavorless).
I know they've only been open one week, but they seemed disorganized. Our bread rolls came from a paper bag that was sitting on the floor, and it's not clear whether all the entrees come with a salad combo or if the salad has to be purchased separately. There was also some confusion on their end when I asked for a Snapple lemon iced tea. Long story short, it took three people behind the counter to figure out which bottle I wanted.
Sorry guys, I won't be coming back.
If I had a car, I would definitely rock the I Love Georgie's bumper sticker. Judging from some of the other yelps, he needs it.
Is this fine dining? No.
Is this an inviting ambiance in which to eat? No.
Looking for that? Look elsewhere.
At Georgie's, they are serving up some dirt cheap lip smacking good eats with a smile. For $6 I got a generous serving of chicken, some mixed beans and bread. I turned down the baked potato, and someone, perhaps George himself, knocked a bit off my price. That was cool. As was the extra side of BBQ sauce. In my world, you can never have too much.
I hope this place makes it - good vibes emitting from a corner of the world that needs it. Yelpers, show this place some love!
Damn, I'm impressed to see 16 reviews already! Everyone must have walked to BART every morning like me and watched the slow birth of George's BBQ on 24th.
I believe all you Yelpers that George is a great guy. My roommate met him this week and said the same thing, but I noticed the same shortcomings as everyone else. Lame BBQ sauce, bizarre decor, mediocre sides. George got on my good side fast by offering a $5 special dinner meal on opening night but as soon as I got home and started chowing down, I had to get critical. I had a quarter chicken, coleslaw, and spaghetti. The chicken was tender but lacked the knock-your-socks-off flavor. Coleslaw was probably the best part of the meal. Spaghetti noodles were too soft and sauce was boring.
I'll go back to try the other meats but my expectations aren't high. This might end up being an convenience-only eatery.
Yesterday at work, I bragged on how I had finally stumbled on a place that I could get the coveted 'first to review' yelp tab (yeah first suckas!)...and pleaded with a friend to come check it out with me last night - even though she had already eaten dinner. I had worked up an appetite and was primed and ready to check out George's BBQ - got there and they were closed! damn!
not closed as in done for the day (it was only 7pm) but closed as in not yet open for business! I got the Thrillist email on Monday, and it seemed to already have the inside scoop making me think it was open...
in any case, I was shaking the bars on the window and begging the BBQ gods to please open already...and George actually came and opened the window and chatted for a while....very nice guy! Gave me a menu and was slightly nervous but very confident and looking forward to a soft opening....which happens to be today!!! guess what I'm doing for lunch? trekking all the way from work just to get my BBQ on.
Menu says cash only....stay tuned for updated report....
So, one of my biggest complaints about BBQ is the price. I mean, if your cooking a cheap piece of meat like Brisket, why is it so expensive?
Enter George's. First, it may be a misnomer to call this BBQ. George's is another in the great line of Northern California Hoff Braus. The meat is cooked in a rotisserie, not on the grill or in a smoker. That said, the meat is tender and somewhat smokey.
The sauce is Texas style with lots of vinegar and sweet. The meat not flavorful enough, but with sauce and decent sides, it works. The chicken was the best thing followed up by the excellent pastrami. Ribs were disappointing, but with an $11 chicken and ribs combo with two sides, I would go here again.
The dinners are big enough to share, but I saw several petite women polish off whole plates of ribs, roast beef, and chicken.
The only disturbing thing about George's is the mural on the wall. What is it, Greek islands, a metaphor for slices of roast beef floating in Au jus? I may never know. Just make me a plate of chicken......and don't hold the sauce.
I'm really surprised at all the 1 star reviews on here for this place!
George is really nice, and so is his staff. They really care about their customers, you can tell.
The chicken was tender and juicy and amazing. The ribs were good, but nothing to write home about... "Dear Mom..." The pastrami was good too, but again, no letter to my mom (or your mom, for that matter.) The salads were tasty too. The soda was $1.00 and I appreciate them not raping me on price for a can of soda.
The decor is nothing exciting, but that's not why you go there.
Solid addition to the Mission. Keep it up George!
I see there's another listing called "George's BBQ on 24th", but is that what it's really called? I'm putting mine in this already existing one instead. Maybe yelp will move it, who knows...
Anyway, to give the executive summary, I love good bbq, and this isn't it. The meat is tender and otherwise well cooked, but not particularly flavorful, and this doesn't seem to be actual bbq either, i.e. seems not from a smokehouse. Sides are passable -- baked potato was good, but cole slaw a bit salty. To its credit though, you can get a lot of meat for the money, so it's got that going for it.
The space is a bit spartan, but clean and efficient, and the staff are all friendly. So bottom line: decent value for money for a carnivore.
First of all, haters get laters. I went in trying to figure out what some of these prisses were talking about, but it was good. Listen, George's isn't the best barbecue.. I'd go to Everett and Jones' for that, but on 24th st., it's the best for the money. Nowhere in this part of the Mission is going to feed you better for cheaper. Example: 1/2 chicken slathered with sauce for $4.34 out the door. delicious and filling. P.S. people, don't go into a joint wanting it to be something else that already exists, just see what it is for itself
absolutely wonderful!!!! the food that i had was the freshest, it was the tasty morsel that everyone looks for! the best that I've had since being here....& I've eat allot of places already
man, i went here when they were open maybe the first week and the chicken was fantastic! so juicy, falling off the bone, and it was truly mindblowing how a chicken can taste like that. very fresh, i thought.
i've been here maybe three other times since and oh boy, what a change! all times, the bread was rock hard, and the chicken was dry.
i think they're a relatively new restaurant, so it's disappointing to see it go south so quickly.
Great, meaty treats. Generous portions. Nice, family-run kind of feeling. Clean. I'll go back.
I have to say I was excited to see a new type of cuisine open in the Mission after losing CLG.
This excitement was soon crushed after eating there. As I walked into the door the first thing I noticed was who I think may be George using a meat fork and kitchen shears to cut meat and then wiping the utensils on his shirt. You're in an open kitchen dude and no one wants to eat food from someone who looks like a slob. At least try to look professional.
There were definitely some communication problems with ordering and how tickets should work, seems there could be a better system.
My ribs were barely warm, over salty, and over cooked. I don't know if they had the heat table on or what, but it was disappointing biting into a tepid piece of meat barley covered with a sauce that was pretty weak. My side dish of macaroni salad was maybe 4-5 spoonfuls that tasted like institutional food. The only thing that was good was the baked potato but really it's a baked potato how hard is that. The dinner roll wasn't even that good. Its like they got all that stuff at Costco and decided to open a restaurant. B-B-Q? Where's the smoker? The pit? and anything else one would associate with B-B-Q.
All in all its not worth it for B-B-Q. Save your money for real Que and go to Big Nates' (or better yet have Big Nates' come to you they deliver) or Memphis Minnies.
Sorry George clean up or close up.
Decent meal at a decent price. Chicken is a bit dry, but not bad with the sauce.
I went here with three friends - we'd heard good things so we were looking forward to our meal. Unfortunately, none of us were impressed. Two of us had the ribs dinner and we both agreed that the ribs weren't strong; didn't seem like the best cuts of meat and the sauce was underwhelming. Our friend who had the brisket dinner was satisfied, but not wow'd, same with our friend who ordered the chicken dinner. With our meals we were all given a baked potato with a slab of very yellow butter, a very plain and tasteless/textureless bread roll, and a choice between a variety of sides, including macaroni salad.
The decor - or lack thereof - added to the feeling that we were dining at an airport cafeteria or some equally abstract and non-defined location. Really bright fluorescent lights blared and a nondescript mural of a desert scene was lightly painted on the walls. It was kind of like a decision was made not to make any decorative decisions.
None of us were expecting a formal meal, but the absence of atmosphere made everything taste plainer.
First of all I want to congratulate George on his delicious BBQ restaurant!
Second of all I want to say to the person who wrote that tacky email about the supposed drama with Pete's BBQ "Get a LIFE" or put your own drama for other's to see. Don't speak about what doesn't involve you if you don't even know the facts.
Now that I have said that the food is great, the chicken is so juicy and tender, they have a great meal combo and lot's of beer's and other drinks to select from.
The restaurant it's self is beautiful with a large mural that relaxes you and a large screen TV where you can enjoy sports or your favorite "Novela".
Don't take my word for it or other yelper's take the time to support this family own business and make your own choice. I'm sure you won't regret it.
Any time you have a chicken emergency George's BBQ on 24th St. is the place to go!
This place is a solid barbecue joint. The meals are good and you can get out of there for less than $10. The sandwiches are my favorite because they are so loaded with meat. not that big, but you can seriously take out half the ingredients and still have a sandwich. The bread they use is okay, nothing exciting. The sides are typical of a barbecue spot and I never am really interested in that stuff. Just the animal.
This place is a solid, good-value meal of (not amazing, but pretty good) BBQ on a street where Taquerias abound. (I don't have anything against taquerias, i just don't want to eat a burrito every night). The rotisserie chicken is very good, juicy. The ribs are just okay. The sides are uninspired but passable. It's clean. The price is right.
No, it's not the best BBQ. But, it very much does hit the spot. It is what it is. A lunch combo of 1/4 chicken, spaghetti, and a baked potato for only $6.50 with tax? George's is one of the great bargains in the city.
i must say that i was very impressed with this place. the food was very fresh and delicious and the employees are top notch. the manager even gave me a free soda when he saw i was a dollar short. a very family style place thats great to both eat at and take out from. if you're hungry for bbq and in the mission you cant go wrong.
When I go to BBQ I go for one reason - pulled pork sandwich and ribs. George's is the first BBQ restaurant I've EVER been to which didn't have pulled pork! The ribs were ok but as other yelpers have mentioned they totally skimp on the BBQ sauce and overall things were lacking those bold BBQ flavors I wanted. I'll try them again, but after a while and I probably won't go out of my way.
Definitely above average BBQ (for California anyway) and the prices can't be beat! Atmosphere is VERY clean which is a welcome contrast to 24th Street itself. I highly recommend the sandwiches and they even have Dutch Crunch!
I'm reserving a star because I think there should be more options (or variation) to what is served. Like a SPICY BBQ sauce option or maybe an herb roasted chicken?!? And where is the lamb?!? I don't know much about the industry so maybe drifting from the rotisserie & mop sauce is too difficult?!?
However, what they do offer (chicken, beef, pork & 6 or so sides) is delicious and very filling. Try it!
If you drop in here expecting something along the lines of Memphis Minnie's or Flint's, you will probably be disappointed. Aside from the Ribs and Chicken, this place really is more of a Hofbrau House. The menu also includes roast turkey, ham, pastrami and Polish sausage.
I had the ribs, and although I wasn't thrilled with the barbeque sauce, the ribs were great - tender and juicy. If you are a purist, just tell them to leave the ribs bare and bring your own bottle. I almost never have baked potato, so I love that the dinners come with one. Perfectly cooked inside with a crunchy skin. yum.
Bottom line is that this a great place for comfort food, if you find yourself in need. The place is clean, well run and a great value.
If you're looking for southern-style pit Q, this isn't the place for you. However, I had the ribs which were meaty and tender, if a bit salty for my taste. I would definitely recommend bringing your own sauce. The sides all looked good - I had slaw that was pretty tasty. They include a baked potato with all dinners, as well as a dinner roll. Good value for your money.
I went to Georges BBQ and I had one of the best sandwhichs ever. You can tell that everything is fresha dn they have great customer service. I would definitely go their again. I recommend to try the place once to get your own oppinion on it because the people who reviewed a 1, must have gone on a bad day.
