ok, this isn't an oxymoron but i just had a great dental visit.
i think i lived in a dental vacuum my whole life. my previous dentist had the following perks: toothbrush kit.
Dr Wu's office has the following:
comfortable and inviting lounge with movie playing
free bottled water or coffee.
music stations with headphones
great and friendly staff
massage dental chairs
choice of action, comedy or drama movie during dental procedure
and of course, a toothbrush kit.
I'm not a "problem" patient, just go for cleanings. This cleaning was painless, Dr Wu uses an ultrasonic instrument so there is no sharp pick between the teeth.
This is my first visit as I just changed dentists.
As background I only went to three appointments at this dentist office.
1. The reviews about the atmosphere are spot on. They have very luxurious accommodations and the massage chair is cool too.
2. The service is pretty good too. The receptionist is very friendly and greeted me by name when I entered -- impressive.
3. One of the three appointments I had was to get teeth whitening trays. Dr. Wong was very skilled in this process. He asked me if I'd had molds made of my teeth before, and I responded yes (from the days when I had braces). Then he asked me if I remember having a gag reflex when those were done and I said yes. He guided me through the whole teeth mold process and positioned me so that I didn't have that gag reflex... very impressive.
4. Now for the most important part in my mind. The usual 6 month teeth cleaning appointments. My husband and I both went for two cleanings each over the span of a year, and we both felt like they were rushing through the process. The first time around, we both thought it was because our appointments were towards the end of day, but the second time around we felt the same rush. We didn't feel like it was the best teeth cleaning and they didn't even floss at the end, which is something that I've always had at previous dentists. I was disappointed by this.
5. I had Dr. Wu for one appointment, and while I'm sure she is a very friendly and good person, her tone did make me feel uncomfortable when discussing my oral health -- to me her tone sounded condescending. Now perhaps I am more sensitive about discussing my teeth than others, but nonetheless this is the impression I got.
So, all in all, while my points 1-3 are all positive and it's always fun to be in the midst of luxury. The most important things to me when visiting the dentist are the basics the quality of the six month cleaning and my comfort level with the dentist. I was not satisfied with these two things and decided to leave the lap of luxury to find a dentist who met my basic qualifications.
As I used yelp reviews to pick this dentist I feel that it is only fair for me to share my experience to help others in my same situation.
I have disliked the dentist for years. Came into some bad ones, had painful treatments, etc. After waiting much too long I knew that it was time to get a cleaning and an old crown fixed. From the first moment that I called this office to see if they accepted my insurance I was so impressed. The friendly voice on the other end made making an dentist appointment the highlight of my day. I arrived for my appointment to find a beautiful and clean office and welcoming employees. I was offered water and the option of movies or music.
I needed x-rays and these were the quickest and least painful I have ever experienced. Just a few minutes later I was greeted by Dr. Wu who not only explained my x-rays but put them up on the screen for me to follow along. She calmed all my fears and gave me the status of my mouth in kind, professional, honest terms. I then had my teeth cleaned and polished all while relaxing to soft music.
A few days later I returned to have a filling replaced and the whole appointment took 30 minutes from start to finish. I walked away happy and pain free from the whole experience. I can honestly say that I would never think that having a filling would be this relaxing.
They took care of all my insurance needs and are on time for their appointments which are two things that I think are very valuable yet hard to find.
I believe that I have finally found a dentist office that is professional, friendly, honest and kind and I intend to continue to go to them for a long time to come.
I dont usually like dentists but i actually REALLY enjoy my time at this office. I'e already gone four times for various procedures and it is a pleasure all the time.
First off, they have the best staff ever. Hands down. Everyone is always happy and kind (even at 9am in the morning). Also, Im one of those people who want to know what is going on inside my mouths, and both dentists tell you what they are doing as they do it. (I have seen both doctors) And its great that Dr Wong is hilarious! He was making my laugh during my crown! Dr Wu and Dr Wong are incredible dentists!
Second, their office is so clean and modern and you get to watch movies while they are working on you. The atmosphere they have created really shows that they take great pride in their work. Seriously, if you need a dentist, come here!
By far the best Dentists I have been to!
Beautiful, clean office with cutting edge equipment. Both Dr. Wong and Dr. Wu are wonderful caring dentists who spend a ton of time with their patients. Their ultrasonic cleaning are fabulous!
I agree, this IS the best dentist office ever. I was welcomed (by name) from Heidi the friendly office manager. She kept my paperwork simple for me and after my cleaning she even helped provide an estimate for getting my wisdom teeth pulled (yikes). Once I walked through the office doors I could tell that this was going to be a different experience than anything I'd been to before. Once you walk in, you realize all of the extra perks that makes this place so unique. There are personal jukeboxes, this month's magazines on the coffee table and a flat screen TV playing the latest movies - sitting in front of the couches.
Once inside, I was once again awed at the ease of the x-ray machine - which pulls right out of the wall, in the same room that you get your cleaning. They put me in a reclining chair that massaged my back! Better yet, they flipped on the flat screen and asked me which movie I wanted to watch. HUH? Dentist offices have flat screen TVs perched above your dental chair? YES, this one does! I watched The Guardian with Kevin Costner and Ashton K. It was great, my cleaning was so gentle I wanted to stay in the massaging chair and finish the end of the movie... seriously I could have fallen asleep it was so relaxing.
But onto the important part, which is the technique and professionalism of the staff. Dr. Wong was gentle, and took the time to explain everything he was going to be doing. He went over the equipment before he went to work. He communicated throughout the process and really it was the best and easiest cleaning I've ever had. I highly recommend this place... especially to families. Seriously, bring the kids, they will not be turned off by dentist trips at this place.
George Wong and Grace Wu have a highly professional approach and a truly lovely office. The equipment is state of the art, plush, and comfortable. You can even get a massage in the dental chair. However those are lovely extras, but the real value is in the high quality of dental care they offer.
I went to George for my first visit in January 07. He was definitely the best dentist I have ever been to. Extraordinarily knowledgeable and able to help solve a problem regarding a crown that has been plaguing me for six years and through two other dentists.
I also happen to know that George is highly overqualified. His training includes a fellowship in Maxillofacial Surgery at Sloan-Kettering Hospital in New York City, a nationally recognized hospital for leading-edge cancer treatments. George gave all that up to practice general dentistry, which he has been doing for many years prior in Redwood City. And aren't we lucky to have such a qualified dentist.
I drove from San Francisco for my appointment and I will continue to do so.
Drs. Wong and Wu have an excellent practice based on strong expertise in dentistry and wonderful patient care. I have seen Dr. Wong for a number of dental issues and have a great deal of confidence in his abilities. For example, he diagnosed a tooth abscess from a root canal performed by my previous dentist 2 years ago which had been causing me persistent discomfort. After this was taken care of, the discomfort went away entirely.
Just as importantly, their facilities are top-notch, with modern equipment and excellent hygienic technologies. Plus, the patient-oriented amenities such as movies and massage chairs indicate that they value the comfort of their patients.
I would recommend this practice to anyone seeking high-level care from expert dentists.
There is a reason these guys are at the top of the list, both doctors wong and wu are so extremely gentle. i've always had sensitivity issues and dentists always seem to poke and prod and bring tears to my eyes, but these doctors are so, so gentle.
i even brought my 2 year old in for a visit... he actually let them clean his teeth! i can barely brush them!
I became a patient of GW2 Dental because of all the great Yelp reviews so after a few visits I thought I should add my review too.
I agree with all the reviewers, this is a great dental office. It only got 4 stars instead of 5 cause I think one of the perks of going to the dentist should be getting high off the laughing gas and they don't offer that here. :-)
Even so, the lounge/ waiting room and overall service level is really great. I love that they always know who you are because they keep a digital picture stored in your profile. They are also completely paperless which is nice.
The dentists are very skilled and seem to be really compassionate people who make you feel very comfortable calling them on their cell phones if you have any discomfort after treatment. The massage chairs and movies during treatment is one of the other big reasons I keep coming back.
I got turned on to the whole 'Spa Dentistry' thing a few years ago when I had a horrible tooth ache while on a business trip in Dallas. I was so pleasantly surprised when I walked into their waiting room and saw velvet lounge chairs and candles and I found myself laughing at Sleepless in Seattle while the dentist was drilling my teeth (see the benefit of laughing gas!). For a number of years after, I actually scheduled my yearly cleanings around trips to the Dallas area just to visit this particular dentist. After I quit that job though I had to find a new local dentist and I'm very happy with GW2!
I know this sounds weird, but make sure to use the bathroom while you're there. They have a custom sink that is really cool.
the 411...
* excellent dentists
* friendly staff, relaxed environment
* beautiful office and high-tech setting
the 822...
* dr. george wong and his wife dr. grace wu are 2 (late 30's) dentists, who met as colleagues at NYU dental school. they're both charming and do excellent work...i can't recommend them high enough.
* you're first ushered by a very friendly staff person who doesn't have to hunt for you... why, because they keep your picture on file and know who you are, as opposed to being another patient number.
* then, waiting is a minimum... but, if you have to wait, they have a fully stocked cafe and juice bar... you even get your own personal music station, plasma tv... want to catch up on email, yup, you guessed it, internet stations or wi-fi for your laptop... or just relax in a comfortable zen-like atmosphere... then... it gets better...
* Imagine, getting your teeth examined and cleaned by a super-qualified and very friendly dentist, while lounging in a comfortable leather massage chair... AND... watching your favorite new movies or TV shows on a LCD TV mounted on the ceiling.... before you know it, the visit is over... but, you still want to stay there in your comfy chair...
seriously, this is the most pleasurable dental experience i've ever had.. it's really more like a spa experience than a dental visit :)
I have not yet found a dentist that I like since moving to the bay area. It is important for me to like my dentist bc going to the dentist is not necessarily a pleasant experience. Well, I wanted to find something close to home and came across the review on yelp. Unfortunately, I did not receive the great customer service everyone else has. First, they screwed up my appt and had to call me to ask me when my appt was. Shouldn't they keep track of that? The day of my appt the receptionist was friendly enough. My appt was with Dr. Wu, she had a passive aggressive personality and was subtly sassy. I was like WTF?, is she having a bad day? I gave my entire experience the benefit of the doubt considering all the rave reviews from the other yelpers.
During my follow up appt, the receptionist couldn't find me in the schedule, even though they had called me earlier in the week for a confirmation. Okay, am I just tripping bc I'm beginning to think this dentist office does not know what they are doing. Dr. Wong seemed friendly but he also was passive aggressive. Is it me? Do they not want my kind in their office because I am not Chinese nor white? I am really not sure. I gave this place 2 stars bc it is very clean, modern, and you can watch a movie while getting your teeth cleaned. If only the staff measured up to their surroundings.
This is by far the BEST dental place ever! I have been to many dentists and had some horrible experiences and good experiences but this was the best by far. The office is gorgeous, modern, and hosts a variety of things such a juice bar, music station, wireless internet, flat screen hdtv, etc... Everyone is super nice and so is Dr. George Wong. He is fabulous. Very thorough, gentle, nice, and explains everything he is doing. The cleaning was pain free as they use a water based treatment for cleaning. They have the best that technology has to offer throughout this office and it shows that he spared no expense on anything. The best part is that his personality is just as great as the atmosphere and everyone makes you feel right at home and comfy. This is the best of the best as far as dentist offices go!
I would highly recommend Dr. Wong and Dr. Wu. I was terrified of going to the dentist based on past experience, but Dr. Wu, made me feel at ease and explained everything she was going to need to do. She even stopped during my cleanings to ask if I was ok, needed a break.etc. My husband also goes here to actually both doctors, Dr. Wong for his dental needs and Dr. Wu for his Invisalign needs. We are both extermely pleased with the service that these two doctors provide. Not to mention the extremely comforting and beautiful office, they designed thieir office as a warm and inviting environment, so that you almost don't feel like you are going to the dentist.
This review is based on my first visit with George Wong.
First, the office environment is just outstanding. This is not your typical dentist office; starting with the relaxing waiting area to the massaging chairs. The waiting area has computers for you to listen to music or to go online. There is water, coffee, tea, etc. for you to have while you wait as well, in addition to playing a movie on the wide-screen TV.
It's nice that they take a picture of you so they know their patients more than just by a name on their files.
Each office has it's own set of LCD monitors; one for you to watch a movie during the exam, and other to display information such as for making appointments. Oh, and I did mention the comfy massaging chairs.
Dr. George is a really nice person who takes his time to thoroughly explain even the simplest of things. He asks you if you have any questions prior to, during, and after the exams. He also made sure I didn't get an unnecessary X-ray because until 1 year has past since my last x-rays incase the insurance wouldn't cover it.
I also got a teeth bleaching tray molding done by his wife and she is a very nice person as well.
These people have artwork on their walls instead of posters or advertisements like I've seen at some other offices.
I would happily recommend them to anyone I know.
Dr. George Wong is a great dentist! I can't recommend him highly enough. I've visited him for several regular checkups, as well as having some small cavities filled. It's always been a pleasure, or at least as much of a pleasure as going to the dentist can be.
This office is the nicest dental office I have ever been to! First, the lobby is very nice: comfortable couches, movies are playing on the cool TV, free bottled water, tea and other items and a music bar - wow! The receptionist is very friendly and is very pleasant. I didn't have to wait too long. You get to sit in a massage chair for your dental procedure! Then they ask you which movie you want to watch (yes, you get to choose!) and it's even in surround sound. Then the tech took my x-rays and she was so friendly and nice (and gentle too)! Then Grace Wu did my cleaning. Finally - a dental office where the dentist does the cleaning (other offices I've gone to, the tech does the cleaning and the dentist just comes by for a quick look at my mouth...never liked that). Dr. Wu is very gentle and did a great job at cleaning my teeth. Oh, and don't forget to check out the cool sink in the bathroom. I highly recommend this office. They are the best!
